My eval was quick. The doctor asked me questions about my diet/eating history, the procedure etc. He wanted to make sure I knew & understood what I wanted to do. The interview lasted about 30 minutes then he gave me written test - had to answer 300+ questions.

Mine took about 3 hours. I talked with the psychiatrist for about an hour and then took a really long test that asked hundreds of questions.

My interview was about 30 minutes with the doctor then off to the tiny room to answer 625 questions that make you think you're crazy by the time you finish. All T/F questions like "I would like the work of a florist", "i'm worthless", "i hate my father/mother", "i love my father/mother" and so on and so on and so on. Then the last part of the test is like 30 questions about you and suicide!!

So all in all it wasn't so bad but it took forever and you come out thinking you're nuts!!

I am paying out of pocket so mine was pretty easy. I had a phone consult today and she just asked me some questions.

Things like:

Are you married

Do you have support from your husband

Who are your support team

Have you gotten any negative comments when telling people you are getting Lap band

What was the last stressful event that happened to you

How did you handle the stress

Have you been diagnosed with any eating disorder

How long have you been over weight

What is the reason for wanting Lap band

Do you have depression or been diagnosed with depression

What do you do at work

How long have you worked there

ETC.....

Nothing to be scared or worried about. Hope this helps a little.

I am back and with I think good results!! They psychologist was a young woman and it was basically her going over all the questions that were already on paper. She told me since I knew what I needed to change after surgery to start practicing now to get used to making meals separate from hubby in the beginning, start walking, measuring food and so on. .

I guess now I just need my two support group meetings, finish my 6 months, and consult by surgeon. :frown:

Good luck with the Psych Consult. The idea of the consult is to make sure you are fully aware of the procedure, the risks, that you have studied your options. They also want to make sure that if there is a history of depression you recognize it and have control. That you are self aware as to how you have gained the weight, if you are Obsessive Compulsive about eating. If you do have an eating disorder they just suggest working with a therapist as you move forward towards banding so you can gain control of the disorder, otherwise banding won't help. I hope this helps and you will do great. Just be honest, they are trained to tell when you are lying.

Exactly! Just relax and answer the questions truthfully and you'll be fine.

Side Note: I cannot believe some of you had to answer so many questions and that it took so long for some of you. I was out of my car at 10:45 and back in my car by 11:05!:frown:

Mine was so easy - we basically chatted about my past....parents, ex's, children, etc..........

He asked me only a couple questions about weight loss and made sure I knew the risks --- and 30 min's later I was out the door.

Gotta love it

My first appt lasted 2 hours. My second appt was about 30 min, and I have one more the end of the month. I think its about money..to be honest. They had me fill out the hundred questions at home before my first appt. He asked about my eating habits, family life, suicide, how long I've been dealing with my weight issues, etc...

I had my appt yesterday at 1:00p, I was literally out of the office by 1:05p. I couldn't believe it! He NEVER asked me anything related to the surgery or even about weight loss or how I felt about it. He asked typical questions about:

What do I do for a living

Ever had suicidal thoughts

Depression

Have children

Have friends

On medication

Feel like killing self or somebody

Feel stressed

Do you have high blood pressure or diabetes

Any medical problems and are you healthy now (I wanted to say, look at me - 261lbs of an unhealthy problem!)

I was very careful in how I answered even the simpliest of questions. I didn't want anything to get in the way of not being recommended for surgery. Example, he asked if I'd ever been depressed, well I didn't lie and stated, yes, about 15-20 years ago. Because I said that, he asked more questions about it, but I was very confident that that was not an issue any longer.

Some questions he repeated in a different form. I could hardly understand what he was saying - seemed like he was mumbling and just going through the motions to approve me. I didn't care, I just wanted to hear that he would approve me for insurance purposes. I would never go to him professionally, he had no personality and was assigned to me through my insurance. What I did understand him say clearly was that he would send over his approved recommendations on Monday pm. That's all that is standing in the way of submitting everything to my insurance for surgery approval. And that's all I cared about!

I wish that was how my psych eval went! I only did the evaluation because it was part of the process not because I felt I had to see a psych...

A few things about my psych visit...

It took about an hour and then I took the Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic Test. It was one of those fill-in-the-ovals-completely-with-a-number-2 pencil tests.

I learned something as well. If you plan to tell no or only a few people (and not sing it from the rooftop to everyone in the world), be prepared to hear that your psych might not feel you are a good candidate for surgery. The "lack of support" thing is critical. I can talk my way around or out of anything, but if you don't think that you can, think carefully about the things that you say about your support system post-surgery. I am not advocating lying at all....just be thoughtful about what you say. This applies to anyone you speak to throughout your pre-op process (PCP, surgeon, office staff, nutritionist, etc.).

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
