did anyone cheat on the post op diet?

Recommended Posts

I am on a 2 weeks of liquids, then two weeks of mushies diet after my banding on Aug2nd. I have had a couple of bites of other things today, day 13 of liquids. just a bite of cooked very soft apple and a spoonful of soft goats cheese. and now I feel guilty. And yet I read on here that some of you are only on liquids for a few days? I dont get it.....

It totally depends upon your doctors guidelines. I had trouble on full liquids with my blood sugars so they advanced the schedule a week. Talk to your doctor.

Have you had your esophagram yet? That's what my doctor used to see if I was ready to come off liquids. You really have to be careful now because you may feel better but inside you have swelling or other healing going on and you don't want to do something that will mess up your surgery.

I wouldn't worry about it--you had what amounts to a couple of bites of mushies a day early.

Every doctor has different guidelines. I didn't cheat, but my doctor had me on pureed Protein 3 days after surgery; it was a lot easier not to cheat, being able to eat!

Seriously, though--it's a good idea to stick with the guidelines you're given, but it doesn't sound like you deviated significantly. Your band can't keep count of the days, and after 13, you'll be fine.

Yes, I did cheat (yesterday and today) and I sure WISH I'd have a reaction!

It amounted to a binge (albeit on pureed) foods, but a lot eaten at one time and with liquids. Like a normal-sized meal.

I know it was a dopey move and I absolutely know better, at twelve days post-op. I'm the kind of person who has to test the rules sometimes before I believe them.

I ate in response to "head hunger" and am looking forward to a class my hospital will be offering this Fall on how to deal with head hunger.

I am living and learning. The hard way, as usual. :)

CHEAT? what do you mean Cheat? no way, if you cheat on the post op plan you could die! I mean reeaally, Cheat? wouldn't dream of it why I would rather drown in a chocolate mike shake than cheat.... Humm that sounds good, well maybe cheat a little. I mean we are only addicted to food no big deal, cheating never crossed my mind not even 47 times! well maybe 46 times.

:):biggrin::):biggrin::lol::biggrin::huh2::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

After reading the MILLIONS of posts from everyone on the different post op plans I have come to the conclusion that the medical community for the banding procedure care is out to lunch. some docs are ultra conservative all the way to "ya have a T bone when you feel up to it" so I just did my own thing and when I felt like I could handle it I ate it. Now that is not my advice to you. my "advice" is to do what your doc said but Just telling you what I did. I did feel it was important the 1st 3 weeks to go with the liquids and mushies because I think the real deal is you have stitches in your stomach and need to heal them before your tum has to digest chunks of solid foods. it can get to rockin around trying to get solids down the hatch, jumping up a day or two early to the next phase with a mushie or two is not likely to cause any harm but I am not a doc so don't listen to me. I still think the entire banding industry needs to have some standardized guidelines for the pre and post op care.

Cheat? sure but I would NEVER admit to it:)

Sure did. I ate chicken a whole day early. I just made sure it was extra juicy. The canned meats that they said I could start eating on the 9th were not comfortable to eat. It didn't matter how small of a bite I took. They would hurt going down.

Yes, I agree, there needs to be some sort of uniform pre-op/post-op plan.

Thanks for that and you are so right. My doctor is a man of few words, some say...I call it arrogant and I am left stumbling around in the dark half the time, trying to figure it out as I go. Do this, don't do that! I have learned more from this forum than I ever will from him. Hmm.... maybe bone up on all the info and start charging like the doctors do.....!

You know, the thing is, you go to Jenny Craig or Weight watchers or whatever and they give you ALL the information, it takes hours to just read through it all. I went to see my doctor and the dietican, no recipes, hardly any guidlines, just a couple of p*** weak pages of nothing. I think they do it because they know we are going to pay the money, why should they put any extra effort into it?

Just be careful. You do not want to get into a pattern of eating and vomiting, because your band may slip...and then you're back at square one. Been there, done that...not fun!!!

Good luck!

Dreamskin, I sooo agree with your last post!!!! They do not help with what to eat. Shoot most of us got here because we make bad food choices. I don't feel like I'm making the best choices I can, but I don't know what elase to do. Like they tell you to eat cream Soup. Man do you know how much fat and crap is in that stuff? I'm at a loss so now I just have 3-4 protien skakes a day. I know I'll get board with that real fast. What to do?????

Thanks and yeah, hot toddie (what a great name) I am being very very careful, but if someone would write a good book with kits of recipes, they would do really well. I bought a book from Amazon, very good at all the technical stuff but not so good at day to day things that you need to know. There were a few smoothie recipes in there, that all.I will not put spagetti bol. into a blender. It just isn't going to happen. I am just going to have to eat the same old boring stuff for a few weeks and use my brains from then on about what I eat.

I had a Jr. shake from Steak and Shake....would that be considered cheating? I only had half and really want another today. I do not have to count calories. And have been doing really well sticking to my post op diet.

Actually I would not call it cheating. When you do cheat you will pay for it. And you wont be to quick to do it again. I really did not get a post op diet. Just got told to have some Soup a few days after surgery or as I could tolerate. example same as pre surgery diet minus the food. I can eat chicken and fish have not tried any red meat thus far. I got banded 7-14-10 and my first fill is on 8-27-10. cant wait.:(

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
