High BMI Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone on the list had a High BMI at there time of surgery? Also were you still able to have it done laporscopically? Were there any difference you had to do then someone with a low BMI? Oh, by High BMI I am talking BMI 59+.

Thanks,

Tonya

Mines was pretty high. I am 5'11" and when I had my surgery I weighed 420. They put me on a liquid diet a week before surgery and I lost 10lbs, but because I passed all my tests I didn't have any problems and my surgery went fine.

Hey Tonya, my DH isnt' on this board, he wants me to have my own support place where I cant talk trash about him.

My DH's starting BMI was in the 80s, which of course is meaningless. His starting weight was 600 pounds. They did him labroscopically, and he had to stay in hospital a few extra days because of some minor complications

I am trying to remember (or forget, as the case may be!!) what my starting BMI was....I think it was nearly 60 as I was 350 and only 5 foot, 4 inches. I had my surgery done "lap" and all went well....Praise the Lord.....

Hi ,

Mine was 54 which only puts me within 30 lbs of a 59 or higher BMI. My surgery went without a hitch and the results have been good as well.

Thanks to all who posted! I am looking to be banded around Feb I hope and I am on the high weight end of 574lbs, well I have lost some on my own so it is at least 15lbs less now. I have been trying to eat more like a bandster and I am hoping that will help. I wantto have the surgery Lap and not open so I was worried they couldnt do it lap on people over a certain BMI, you all have helped my fears. Thank You!

Hello there,

I wanted to let you know that my BMI was 58.4, not above 59, but close. I had mine done laporscroply (can't spell). No problems.

Take care,

Suzan

My BMI was 57 when I had surgery on Nov. 29th. I lost 15 pounds before the surgery and have lost another 10 pounds since last Tuesday. I had it done laporscopically with no problems (Keeping my fingers crossed).

At 338 pounds, 5' 1" tall my BMI was 64 before my lap band surgery.

I had no problems what-so-ever with the surgery or recovery. I had surgery in my doctor's surgery center and was able to go home a couple of hours afterward. I've lost 40 pounds since Sept. 6th. I'm 57 years old and have never felt better! I love my band!

Hi, I was at 75 bmi when I had my surgery 9 weeks ago. Yes I have the band and yes it was done laporscopically, it took me 4 surgeons to find one that felt confident to do it, but it is DONE. Don't hesistate for a minute to go to another surgeon and another and another, until you get the answers you need for you.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
