Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone!

I decided after reading my pre-op packet that i should start a good pre-op diet. All Of my surgeons lap band pts. have to lose 10 lbs before surgery....im hoping i can do it ! Im gonna try real hard!

I started this morning a new somewhat liquid diet. Isopure Dutch chocolate shakes for moring and lunch , and will do chicken and veggies for dinner. Anyone else try this approach? Did it work for you?

Thanks for your imput,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I was prescribed a pre-op diet. I had to do two weeks' worth. I did not have to lose a set amount of weight. But had I gained I would have been canceled, due to the fact that it proved I had cheated.

My surgeon's reason for the two week pre-op diet is to shrink the liver making the surgery easier.

I did the Medifast program which is 5 of their shakes or Soups daily plus one "lean and green" meal, which is just as it sounds..a lean meat and green veggies. So very similar to what you are doing.

Forgot to add, I lost 8 pounds during the two weeks.

It was no fun, but very worth it. I did not cheat on it at all. Including a Superbowl Sunday Party. The first few days were the worst. I don't much care for the Medifast foods.

As I said, my surgeon's reason for it was for liver shrinkage. When I was out of surgery he told me he could tell I had done very well on the pre-op diet because my liver was nice and small and very easy to maneuver around. He said I made his job much easier!

I'm just starting the process. My doctor says that my insurance requires three months of pre-surgery diet, and if I'm above a certain BMI, then I would have to have a two-week liquid diet just prior to the surgery.

It makes sense to work to get the liver "de-fatted," as well as to lose weight to show good intent and that you really MEAN it that the lap-band is just a tool, not the full answer.

Good luck to all.

What were your doctor's orders? What did you eat that was not on plan? Were you WAY off, or were you eating low carb things? Have you gained weight?

I can't say if you have blown your surgery. I do know that not all surgeons require a pre-op diet. I know the pre-op is no fun, but get yourself back on track!

You should probaby tell you surgeon what you have eaten, especially if it was way off your prescribed pre-op. I was told point blank that if I gained weight during the two week pre-op phase that my surgery would be canceled. With the diet I was prescribed, a gain in two weeks would only be possible if I had cheated. My surgeon wanted me to have the safest surgery possible.

Best wishes!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
