Hi! My surgery is scheduled for May 10th. I am wondering how many days off I will need from work. I have a desk job. I thought maybe 2 days. I have had 3 c-sections and have a pretty good pain tolerance. Any thoughts?

Hi Kerri,

I had my surgery on a Friday and was back to work on Tuesday. You'll be a bit sore and slow but 2 days should be fine. This is not near as bad as a C-section. C-Sections make you tough  Just don't over do it. You'll need to wear comfortable clothes. You will be sore and tight waistbands do hurt. You'll be alittle swollen. Good Luck.

I would say take as much time off as you can. I had surgery on Monday and i took two weeks off. I had no idea what to expect but i can tell you that i have a pretty good pain tolerance and i still feel sore today. I did have a hernia repaired so maybe thats why i am taking longet to get back to normal. Also i feel better being at home for the liquid pahse of the diet. It has been pretty easy but i am feeling hungry now. Atleast i can exercise when i want and sleep when i want because the first few days will be rough unless your a back sleeper. If not it will be hard getting a good nights rest. Bottom line if you have the time to take off then use it......

Expect the best, but plan for the worst. I have a desk job, too.

I caught a cold around the time I was in the hospital, so that probably slowed my recovery.

I did one week off, and tried to go back the second week. Ended up doing half time the second, and wishing I had taken it off.

That said, many have returned much sooner than I. I have a fantastic boss with paid sick time, so I wasn't worried about it. I probably could have forced myself to go back quicker had it really been needed.

I had my surgery on Tuesday. I am sitting at work now, wishing that I hadn't come in.

It is doable, but not really where I want to be right now.

Definitely wear loose clothing and take off a week if you can.

Hi There,

I had my surgery on Friday, March 26, 2010 and had planned on returning to work on the Monday, March 29, 2010.

I did however, end up calling in sick on the Monday and returned to the office on Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

I think it was more from the anesthetic and the pain in my back and shoulder from the gas used during the surgery.

I was extremly sleepy for the first two days, found it really hard to stay awake for any period longer than 2 hours. Just felt really punky.

I feel great now and am looking forward to my first fill.

Hope this helps and Good Luck with your surgery!

I took 2 days off along with my weekend and that was fine. I was a little slow moving the first day back but you should be fine. Of course it depends on how your surgery will go and your body.

i scheduled my surgery just before spring break (i work for a college) so that i could have that week off, thinking that would be enough, and i ended up doing half days this second week. i'm glad i didn't take this week off though, because working the half days has helped work my stamina up.

I had my surgery on a Friday - I took the next week off just to be safe. I could have probably returned mid-way through that week, but I was just as happy to have the time off while on a different diet and wearing compression stockings.

I had my surgery on a Wednesday and had a hernia repair as well. I went back that following Monday and took it slow all week.

Hi I had surgery on March 16 and was appproved for short term disability for a month. At my follow-up I advised my doc that Im covered for up to 6-8 due to lapband and hernia repair and that I didn't want to go back until after my first fill. I had my follow-up visit submitted and I'm approved until April 30. I also have a desk job for a huge cell phone company, in a call center. If you have the time avail to you take & enjoy it if you have it. If not I would say 2wks if you have staples(very painful).

I also have a 3yr old daughter so its great to be able to spend time with her and I will be fully healed when I return to work.

I had 10 days off. I am an ER nurse so I wanted to make sure things were secure in place before I started lifting people. I felt well enough about day 5 to go back, but even at day 10 I was tired and couldnt move as quickly. If I had a desk job I would have been fine with a few days. Incision pain is not always the worse thing you can have, I ended up with severe left shoulder pain the day I went back to work because I was drinking out of a straw and got very bad gas pains. That was way worse then any surgery pain so be careful

I've had 3 c-sections too  I had surgery on Saturday and went back to work on Tuesday, I was ok. First couple of days I went home right after work and needed a nap. You'll do fine.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I guess I will have to wait to see how my body adjusts to the surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
