Nothing will happen *now*...but when you start getting fills and restriction, a couple possible scenarios.

One, if you take small sips, the Water will go down, but it has a tendency to help slide your food through...defeating the purpose of the band. We don't want to slide our food through because it is the full pouch that will give us the satisfied feeling and keeping us from being hungry for 4-5 hours after a meal.

Another is that if you take too big of sips, it will not only fill up your pouch before you can eat the food that you need to keep you full...meaning you will be hungrier sooner or it will go down, shift things around and come right back up.

I continued to drink with my meals until I started getting fills. Then I got a crash course in why no drinking with meals (since I'm a gulper and not a sipper). It didn't take long to cure me. :cursing:

I'm having a hard time with this rule also. It's second nature to take a drink of Water after almost every bite of food. But I do undersstand the rational of wanting to keep the food in the pouch for a little while before washing it away. I'm still trying! Not at 100% yet, but soon......

You can also fill your pouch too much and cause slippage which is why it is so important NOT to do this. You may not have problems right away but it will cause you problems. It is very hard to get used to but second nature to me now. I don't even think about it anymore. It has become routine.

When I sit down to eat, I make sure no drinks are close. If I go out to eat, I tell them no Water, no drinks. When I am at home, I dont put them on the table while eating. It helps. Too easy to just reach over and take a sip if it is there.

When I forget, my husband very quietly leans over and slides my glass of Water to his place setting so I won't forget and inadvertently sip the water.

I drink up until the minute I eat.

eventually drinking while eating will be painful. You can also dialate your esphogus as well as all the above.

Now thats cute... I'm sure if my BF knew I recently got banded and knew what the "rules" are, he would be very supportive like this... However, I choose not to tell even him....

Hi All,

Getting banded on 3/3 and was wondering how people feel about after meal drinking. If i go out to eat, sometimes I like to have a cup of coffee afterwards. Now, I now that caffeeine will be a no-no so I am switching to Decaf. What will happen if I enjoy a nice cup o' joe post meal? Will my piouch be too full to handle it? Thus leading to other complications etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I absolutely had to eliminate my fluids during meals, at least once I got really tight. Before then it was not an issue. But after my last fill, I was having horrible issues with getting stuck. It got considerably better once I eliminated fluids before meals. The reason for none after is because the fluids will liquify your food and make it go through quicker instead of making you feel full longer. For me that's not an issue because I rarely get hungry. So I do drink a very very small amount after eating. I did have to have some fill removed because I was throwing up too much, so how much the fluids really contributed, I don't know anymore. I had way more fill than I thought or that the surgeon thought. He wasn't counting fill in the tube. So I'm still hesitant on the fluids, but I would sure like to have a glass of wine with dinner when I go out to dinner. So we'll see how it all works now that I've had 1cc removed.

Hi All,

I was told not to eat for an hour after a meal. Again, you don't want to help your food slide through too quickly, but also your pouch at that point should be full and to add liquid in on top may be enough to start you PBing and sliming. Not a nice end to a meal.

I am struggling with getting hungry as soon as I drink after meals. I try to wait as long as I can, but then I don't get enough liquids. I feel full, but when I drink I start gurgling and rumbling and feel hungry right away.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Hello Everyone...

My nutristionist gave me some great advice... ORDER A GLASS OF ICE.... yup, at resturants just order ice. If you get thirsty bite on a piece of ice.

It's been working for me... I am the type that consumes most of my liquids when I am eatting.

Good luck everyone!

I'm struggling with this one too! I was caught with a straw the other day, that's the first time since surgery that I forgot the no straw rule.

I'm not sure how I'm gong to do the no drinking while eating rule. I'm going to try the glass of ice thing...

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
