    Back to the real world

Well, I have been back one week and have pretty much back to life as normal. Unless you count the sleeping almost 13 hours last night, but that was due to nipping some Tylenol PM at about 2 in the morning b/c Er woke me up when he came to bed and I couldn't get back to sleep. I have been kind of debating with myself if I should detail my expierence on her about the whole trip to MTY. I go back and forth on my feelings about it. I know that I am a picky person and have worked in the medical field for years so I may be biased, but at the same time I think people should know what they are getting into if they do go to Mexico (or at least where I did) what they are signing up for. I think I will sleep on it a couple more days and then update. If anyone wants any one on one info please feel free to send me a private message and I will gladly respond. As for living the Banded life, I already ran into one of the hardest issues which is eating to much and to fast and getting stuck. Tonight I ate way to much meat and ended up paying dearly for it. Literally I thought I was going to have a heart attack and wanted to throw up so badly but couldn't. I now know what being stuck or PBing means and I am afraid that I learned it a little to early, hopefully it didn't hurt the band. I'm off to bed.
  2. I do have a dropper and try to squirt it fast but the taste is just pungent. I'll force to get it down, but seriously, the nausea from that is really the worst part.

    New to site

This is my first time on the site , I have been reading it for a year or so . Went for my psych interview today, did the 400+ question test , Went great ! I have my nutritsal counceling sessions already set up sept, oct and nov . I have already been pre qualified by insurance, however has a case assessment interview on Wed morning with the case manager at my insurance . Will be attending the sininar for Del Sol on 9/17 . I went through all of this several years ago with another insurance company , surgeon , and employer . during the process my employer changed insurance , and all bets were off . Finally this year I decided the only thing standing in between me and lap band was me . My case worker has put me on the fast track , what ever that is . Things seem to be going well. My question is has anyone had experience with Presbyterian New Mexico Health ins . They seem nice and are keeping all their promises . They contract baritic surgery from Del Sol in El Paso Tx , so I have to go there three times , but followups can be done here in Albuquerque . I was wondering if anyone from Albuquerque with Presbyterian insurance has gone down this path and can tell me about Del Sol , your experience , and how the insurance works. thanks for the support

    Journey begins tomorrow!

I LOVE questions. Please feel free to ask. So you are lucky that your surgery is so fast. I had to wait 6 months for mine because I had to go through 6 months of monitored diet and nutritional visits before my insurance would cover it. All the tests that you are having are normal. I had 6 nutritional visits, psych eval, Gastric eval, cardio eval, pulmonary eval, and medical clearance from my primary doctor. I am glad that it took 6 months because I really learned alot from the nutritionist. I already had my sleep study because I have sleep apnea so I didn't need that one. I'm hoping that soon I will be done with the CPAP because I am getting so tired of it. I've been using it for 4 years now. My husband said that he doesn't hear me snoring anymore so I will need to have another sleep study to see if I can come off of the machine. Today I went for my 4th fill. I think I have hit the 'sweet spot' but we will see in a couple of days. You really can't tell on liquids. Which is what you have to be on for 24 hours after your fills. Anyway they said that I have lost 49% of my body weight. They want you to lose 50% in the first year and I am only a little over 5 months in so they said I was well above the curve. I have 45 lbs to go before I am out of the obese area. The doctor said my goal weight is anywhere between 185 and lower. So I am very excited at the moment. I have been under 200 since I was pregnant with my son 22 years ago. Please let me know how your journey is going. And as I said, ask questions. I love answering them. And what I can't answer I will do my best to find the answer for you.
  5. Ohhh yeah, this bugs me too. My doctor specifically discussed this with me when I brought up something similar (friend of a friend has had the sleeve, and was already asking about being cleared to eat crap again). He told me that ANYONE will lose weight in the first year or so - even those that eat total crap like fast food, high carb/fat. The sleeve will be controlling the portion sizing for quite some time, and unless you're bedridden, you'll lose due to the small amount of food you actually consume. The goal is to use this time (roughly 12-18 months) to reteach yourself how to eat HEALTHY. Protein first, then healthy veggies, then complex carbs and rarely eating the crap foods. The real purpose of this surgery is to give you the restriction to help you drop weight NOW, along with reducing or even eliminating the overwhelming hunger most of us feel (due to the hunger hormone ghrelin, which is produced in the stomach... that is almost completely removed when they take most of the stomach out). This allows you to make smarter food choices since you should not be driven with uncontrollable cravings and better able to make smart choices. I've also learned healthy versions of dishes I used to love that weren't all that good - so I can still have things I used to love, but they're not nearly as bad for me. It only takes a few months for the new eating style becomes habit. That is the ultimate goal - learn to eat good, healthy foods for the majority of the time, and still be able to have occasional indulgences. If a person has this surgery thinking they'll be able to eat everything they had eaten before - fast food, fried everything, drink and eat total crap - sure, they'll lose for a bit just because they can't physically get that much in their sleeve, but then as they get further out and it gets a bit easier to eat, they'll regain and gripe about how the sleeve "failed" to work for them. They are the ones that failed however. No one can do well on a diet consisting of high fat, carb and sodium for any length of time. Most crap foods have very little nutritional value as it is, so eating those regularly is just asking for failure. You can eat anything after 6-12 months. Cake, doughnuts, Cookies, bread, Pasta, fried foods, deep dish greasy pizza... Should you? NO. You should make those types of foods a very rare event.
  6. Thanks all for your words, I just wanted to point out, as momohime said, just because my stomach allows it doesn't mean I should. But I want to further go into why I said that. It was more of those times that I wasn't paying attention and ate too much.. and in saying that was relating more to my fear of screwing it up because of that fact. I'm not trying to push my stomach further than it should, and I do pay attention, eat slow and chew a lot as my nutritionist and doctors say to do. But you know those mistakes where you're eating and you may accidentally eat too much too fast? I freak out for a sec.. thinking "oh my god, I might get really sick" but then nothing happens... So.. sorry if this isn't making much sense but THAT makes me fear that I could really screw it up without realizing it. There's always the potential to eat out of the sleeve, as I've heard others put it. I don't want to do that. Who would? You go through the whole process just to end up 300 pounds again.. It's no one's goal.. but it happens. And I just freak out over the potential of it. Especially considering my stomach is being more flexible than I honestly thought it would. I was making stupid mistakes for a few days, because I was sick and tired of the liquid diet.. and I tried mashed potatoes.. and mac and cheese, and my stomach and I both liked it. But... I said to myself... Girl, you just went through surgery.. I know you're desperate, but don't screw this up. Thankfully, I was close to the end of my recommended liquid diet, to where I was told I could start on things like canned tuna and chicken, and soft fish, so I started on that. And it's doing great. I'm getting about 60 grams of Protein now, I've given up the high cal carbs, thankful that I could make that decision on my own. I know that I can screw it up. I fear it greatly.. And it's nice to be able to come here, and express my feelings and get feedback, so I really appreciate it from all of you. Words to help me along, advice, and just to have someone to relate to who may be going through the same thing.
  7. Hi! I took the prep diet opportunity to use the things that have been sitting in the pantry and freezer for too long because I was very busy with teaching as a full time job, teaching math tutorials after school and weekends, and driving the kids to their lessons and fast food became my handy friend. Being on summer break and a liquid diet, I cleaned out the food that's been sitting there and turned it into meals that I froze for my kids and visiting friends when post op recovery rolls around. I literally don't have any more room in my freezer because it is so stocked with prepared meals! I didn't have to buy much to add to the recipes so I saved money (money that went to buying my Protein shakes I didn't have any issue cooking with regards to temptation or torture. I actually enjoyed it. It gave me something to focus on instead of my hunger pains.
  8. Ok so curious. It been hot here in the south east for past 2 wks and miserably so. I have not had fill in 2 mos and now lately my band I super tight and I'm nauseous during day. Yes I'm out working in this dreadful heat I'm not drinking any tea, lemonade or coffee cause doc says caffeine can dehydrate you etc. But I vomited 3x yesterday it was 100 degrees and this was after I drank half of mcdonalds wild berry smoothie. I've had these before with no problem. Within minutes of drinking felt like band was squeezing it and I didn't get relief til it came up. Prior to this I had been fine. I normally don't get nauseous, except when I eat too fast. Anyone else notice changes with hot weather?

I just went to the nutrition class this past Tuesday. I couldn't make the class is May...sooooo excited! They are such a great group of caring knowledgeable people! Good luck on the 6th!!!! June 20th can't get here fast enough...but I'm also enjoying some of my favorite carbs now, knowing it will be a while until I can again!

    2nd opinion

I think you need to question your reaction...why do you leap so fast to having it removed? Re-examine all the reasons you wanted it. It sounds like you were not very well-informed about how the band works. It is a just a piece of plastic until proper restriction is reached. It can take many months and many fills to reach restriction. The "best" bandsters will behave as though they are restricted and stick to the band rules and lose weight while waiting for restriction. In a perfect world, we would all be able to do that. In reality lots of us become frustrated (some more quickly than others), feel like we are just on another "diet" (a $17k diet this time), been duped again, test the band to see how much we can eat...yep...can eat a lot just like before and the losing stops. Then we come to our senses - realize we are in "bandster hell" re-commit to the process and work hard every day to get to our goal and PRAY that the next fill will bring us to proper restriction. This is what we all signed up for! I'm sorry if you didn't realize that when you made the decision to get banded. You are very lucky, though! You have a wonderful tool inside you that can make all the difference this time...don't get it removed before you even give it a chance to work Fear of failure is a big thing...so is fear of succeeding. Which are you most afraid of? I don't ask that question from a place of knowledge...I'm trying to figure it out for myself, too. Lots of us are  Hang in there!

    Post-op care question

You got some good advice. I will say that they most likely will NOT release you unless it is in to another's care; they won't let you drive and may or may not let you take a cab. Call to make sure. The afternoon of the surgery my husband was home with me....I enjoyed the attention but would've been fine alone. By the next day he was long gone to work when I got up etc. I slept in my bed the first night and got up fine BUT I took it very slowly, used a pillow to brace my torso (that is a great trick...use it!) and I have a 4-poster bed...that poster by my head got used for me to help position myself. To be honest though had I been alone, i could've rolled out of bed onto my knees (into a kneeling position) then gotten up that way. Hope that doesn't sound dramatic...just letting you know it's do-able. I was determined to sleep in my bed from the start. I agree to make sure you have your prescription on hand from the start, and have easy access to your Water. I wouldn't want to face an upstairs/downstairs thing, but same floor should be fine. Also please realize that the idea that you SHOULD rest is wrong, to a point. You did have major surgery and you aren't ready for a marathon; but you need to walk...getting up every hour and moving around a little is good. You also need to breathe deeply...if you feel bad take your pain meds, of course. I found I was good with tylenol and it didn't knock me out. The sooner you act like you're normal, the sooner it will be true. Walking does miracles for pain, gas, circulation, and healing. And by walking I don't mean to head to the track and do a few miles, I mean getting up and going for your own water, to your bathroom, around your apt., etc. I had an easy fast recovery. I know pain is different...but if you're at all like me (not bad for a 53 year old fat chick!) then being alone won't bother you at all. Enjoy watching some dvds or reading or whatever, enjoy the time to yourself!

    Post-op care question

Working that soon really depends on a lot of things...like what you do and how fast you recover. I think though honestly you should take the week. You'll feel better and do a better job. I had my surgery friday and had tues afternoon classes but I had that next day off and was really greatful for that! You'll be on liquids, recovering from surgery...and you will get tired way more easily than you're used to! You really need to take the week! If your job runs over the weekend you might be ready by Saturday...but take a week and go back early if you recover really fast!
  13. I am 33 days out. I have not had hunger like before surgery. I sometimes feel a sort of hollow feeling in my belly but a boiled egg or a piece of cheese fixes me up. I don't crave sugar or fast food. I have had an easy time of it so far. Sometimes I have to make myself eat. Good luck!

    How long will I wait?

I work for the state so I have pretty good insurance bcbs. I've done my psychological visit, sleep study (found out I have sleep apnea) ultrasound (check my gallbladder) and six months worth of dietician appointments ( at the end of this month)then I see the surgeon to schedule my surgery. It actually went by pretty fast. I was just wondering how long it takes to get to the surgery so I can schedule my vacation Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  15. Tried going to bed but it got worse when I lay down. Threw up one more time, then it eased up enough to go to sleep (but not completely). This morning I'm fine so far. I just want to know what causes it so I can avoid it in the future. Usually when it happens I know why - food too dry, ate too fast, didn't chew enough - but this was totally out of the blue.
  16. I'm on stage 4 as well and I admit I have this problem too I also find that I don't lose weight as fast when on solids vs. liquids/puree. So some days I try to do mostly liquid proteins/greek yogurt etc instead of 3 solid meals a day because it helps me lose weight faster and I get my liquids in easier as well. I am sure I'm going to have to get used to eating solids daily at some point, but it's a struggle and I play with it every day because some days I can tell my body won't tolerate solids but as the others said just keep track of try to get it anyway you can. My go tos are Fairlife milk in my morning smoothie and I try to drink Isopure couple times a day diluted with crystal lite or Syntrax nectar slightly so I'm getting about 60 grams of Protein a day from that as well as getting some fluids Sent from my KFSAWI using the BariatricPal App
  17. I know this is a silly question , but i was thinking about this the other day. Has anyone had anyone ask, or whisper behind there back that your on drugs? I haven't been banded yet, but I would think that with loosing so much weight so fast. Don't people ask you how in the hell your loosing so much weight so fast? Not that I'm really hiding it, my friends know, and i'm friendly with ONE person at work. I just think theres only a few possibilities that weight comes off so quickly. I know that its not like that for everyone, but I just wonder if anyone's had anyone say something to them either way. Really I think I'm asking cause I lost 80lbs once when i was 20 and people i saw from highschool would make comments like that. i'm from a small state someone is somewhere at some point. I just thinks it would kinda be funny.

    having a bit of trouble

Sounds like you're bored. Change up your diet. Slow down your eating. Focus back on how you ate at the beginning. Use a smaller plate. Don't eat standing up or in front of the TV. Move more. You're probably eating the same things too often, and/or eating too fast. Turn things around, and see if it makes a difference. Force yourself to change the same old routine. Sometimes all you need to do is rearrange how you eat in a day, to get back on track. Good luck! Dave

HI :) I am Tonya, 6 days post op...

Hey there! I am 5 days post op and I am not sure if I am getting all my Water, and this Protein is difficult. But it is a process, so we take it day by day. The gas is bad, but we walk! I think I am drinking too fast, but I am working on it. Everyone keep your head up and your liquids down! XXOO!

5 day post-op dry gas heaving...

On another thread, a guy recommended the percussion massager for gas trouble. It works wonderfully. I am so glad I had one! I also got some mileage from the down dog yoga position, and making sure I was utilizing the laxatives. For me, the pain meds slow everything down, and that's when I get into trouble with gas. Having had lap surgery for another issue before, I knew to have the laxatives standing by. I recommend something gentle that you've used before, though. You don't want to make things worse by using a product that is too strong. You are doing very well for weight loss. I don't see what you're worried about there. Before banding, I've never lost weight that fast. It sounds like you are moving around some if you're at a soccer game 5 days out, so that's good, too. Hang in there. It must get better or else all of the folks here wouldn't have done it, right? That's what I tell myself when I feel icky. Hope you feel better soon.
  21. I was banded by Dr. Hung at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Lincoln, NE on 11/24/08. I was planning on an overnight stay, but because of swelling around the band had to stay two nights. To be honest pain has been minimal, and once I left the hospital I only used one dose of the pain medication. I have some stiffness in my abdomen, but I expected that. The biggest problem I have faced was getting liquids to go through. The swelling around the band caused the opening to be very small, and even small sips of Water felt as if they were backing up into my throat. As the swelling has decreased this problem is decreasing, but the first few days had me second guessing my decision. I'm not going to lie and say that this has been an easy process, but given that I have shed 25 lbs in roughly five days, I feel it was well worth it. I have had cravings many times, and if I see one more fast food commercial on TV I may scream, but I have survivied. I even managed to deal with spending my birth day in the hospital, and Thanksgiving on the sideline so to speak. I would urge anyone who is considering this procedure to prepare themselves mentaly for what is ahead. I spent alot of time thinking about the pain, and how I would cope, and I didn't factor in the mental side quite as much. I have been lucky that not doing so has not hampered my progress. Good luck and Happy Holidays to everyone.
  22. I'm having a problem with drinking the amount of Water that my doctor wants me to drink a day. I'm not drinking with meals or for 1 hour after a meal (as he directed). But 1 hr after the meal, as soon as I start sipping on water, I start to feel hungry. I know that it's probably because I'm washing all of my food through the band, but I don't know how else to get my liquids in! Does anyone else have this problem? Right now, I am getting around it by starting a bottle of water 1 hr before a meal, and telling myself that I have to drink the water and then wait about 10 more minutes before eating. I don't know if this is a good way or not, but it seems like the only way I can get in the fluids without being hungry. I am worried, though, about stretching my pouch by drinking the water so fast. BTW, I am 3 weeks post-op, and just starting on solids.
  23. Incidentally, eating gets better with time. It took several months before I felt like I could eat normal. Every once in a while when I eat too fast, I have a problem as well and it causes me not to be able to eat my meal. That being said, it does get better. Promise. For now Water and clear fluids are critical to ensure that you are hydrated. food is secondary. My nut did not even have me start on Protein shakes until week 2.
  24. I got sleeved on November 8th. By my two week post-op visit, I had lost 21 pounds. I started stage 4 of my diet plan and I feel that during my 3rd week I haven't lost as fast. I keep panicing thinking oh my, maybe my sleeve isn't working anymore, maybe I stretched it out, etc...it is a horrible feeling but I am trying not to get discouraged and keep telling myself that everyone is different. Thanks for this post. It is comforting to know that others go thru the same thing. Highest weight = 271 surgery date 11/8= 266 2 weeks = 245 3 weeks = 242
  25. I would have to say your having gas pains. After consuming Protein shakes or what not. Anything that has a tendency to go down alittle fast will cause more air for some odd reason. I am 14 months out, Within an hour of having a Frozen Protein shake I will have gas. When I eat salads I have more gas. What you're probably feeling is still the gas from surgery, it rises inside your body. You notice it more after you are eating Full liquids, it is pushing on it from the inside as your tummy fills with liquids the gas rises. The more you walk the faster it will go away. I had some severe shoulder pain, by late afternoon post -op. I knew I had to walk, it hurt really bad to lie down.. Good luck , hang in there.
