Third & Fourth Week Post OP
jbflorida replied to @Ashley@'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ashley and all, I spent 2 weeks preop with Optifast. I did just fine. Post op was Clear Liquids for 14 days. Today was Day 10 and I called the doctor because I really feel a difference in the hunger! 100 calories a day, feeling weak, blood pressure getting low-- The PA told me to have one Optifast today. I was so happy, you'd think she told me to go to a buffet. Tomorrow--2 Optifast and then on the full liquids on Saturday, instead of next Tuesday. She said my band would be fine. So this is bandster hell. The swelling has gone down and the hunger has returned. With a vengence! I will be good about the full liquids as I really want this to work! It WILL work--and I will "work it." Down 24.5 lbs as of this AM--banded on May 13. Started at 217, now 192.5. Have to buy new pants. -
How Much Of Regular Food Can U Eat Now After Surgery?
lollyfidy1965 replied to gettinMeBack's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 13 weeks post-op, and am still only able to eat 2-3 ounces of "dense protein" (i.e. meat). I can eat 1/4 cup cottage cheese along with 1/4 cup tuna salad (total 1/2 cup). Sometimes I'm able to eat a couple pieces of veggies (carrots, green beans, asparagus, etc) along with my 2-3 ounces of meat. I don't push myself (I've learned not to...the consequences are very uncomfortable!), and I supplement with protein shakes, gelatein 20, or protein bars, to ensure I get enough protein every day. -
So, the materials I got from my surgery center said that I could choose between two pre op diet options. I could either do a two week diet of two protein shakes and one low calorie meal (like lean cuisine) or I could do nine days of only liquid protein and all the green vegetables I want. My husband seems to be concerned with me getting in less than 1200 calories as that slows my metabolism down especially coupled with three weeks of no real solid food. Does anyone know why we need to do this pre op diet anyway? I can understand fasting before the pre operative testing but why for nine days!? Has anyone not lost weight on the pre op diet and had their surgery delayed?

Thank you Dr. That explanation cleared up a lot for me but I just wish I wouldnt have to do for 7 weeks. I'm weak and very very hungry.

Hi, My name is Gigi. I am considering WLS and have been doing research on the lap band and VSG. I went to a seminar on 8/19 thinking I wanted a lap band and realized it was not really a good option for me. I have a lot of allergies and do not think the idea of putting a foreign object in my body a good one. As a result, I have been thinking about the VSG. I am 5?7?, around 282 lbs with a BMI around 45; I also have asthma, high-blood pressure and moderate to sever sleep apnea? so I am a good candidate. I still have some concerns especially as I have never had to have an operation. I?m scared! My insurance covers the procedure but I have to do a 6 month doctor supervised diet and exercise plan. I am mainly considering this procedure to improve my health before I add more complications to the mix. Looking better is just a plus. I have been reading the entries on here for while so most of my questions about complications and results have been answered. I am still interested in knowing if there are any major restrictions to exercising after the procedure. I have always been a big girl ? size 14 in high school, while all my friends were size 9 -10 ? and extremely active. I have taken dance lessons most of my life and even when I was in a dance troop where I was dancing 6 days a week, I was never smaller than a size 12/14. So what I am interested in knowing is ? after the procedure do you lose your muscle? When you lose all that weight, is your skin extremely lose that you require surgery to correct? Do you know if I will be called for my initial appointment before I start the dr supervised diet and exercise plan or is that something that typical takes place after you have your initial appointment? Has anyone had there VSG done at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York? That is where I would be getting my surgery if it proves viable for me. Thanks for any information! It is greatly appreciated.

GPS Update - Last week's bariatric conference
DrWatkins posted a topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Last week was the MISS Conference (Minimally Invasive Surgery Symposium) in Salt Lake City, UT . The first part of the week is laparoscopic general surgery and the latter part of the week is the bariatric surgery section. There was a lot of enthusiasm and interest surrounding gastric plication. It is now a hot topic on the agenda of these meetings and the interest is growing substantially. There was a GPS course at the meeting and surgeons advertising future courses at their institutions. We have begun GPS training courses as well. There are a lot of surgeons wanting to learn how to do GPS and offer it to their patients. The GPS is still considered experimental/investigational since there is no long-term data in the U.S. There is longer-term data internationally that looks good and a couple of surgeons in the U.S. like us are seeing good weight loss averages with the procedure but it is certainly an early stage technology. There were surgeons at the meeting who felt that this procedure looks promising but is not ready for prime time yet due to the absence of long-term data and there were surgeons like myself at the meeting who have experience with the procedure and have successful patients and we feel it is a good operation with the caveat of long-term data. What I see is that patients are driving the interest in GPS because it doesn't involve implants, staples or intestinal malabsorption. It is wonderfully simple - it's just your stomach, only smaller. I have also been fixing plication cases done by other surgeons so I feel strongly about proper technique. I will keep you updated as we gain information on this new procedure. -
I have been on Prilosec for years now and it does work better than Tums. I can't speak of the unfill ,never had that, but I do want you to know that reflux can do a lot of damage to Esophagus and I want you to talk with your Dr right away. But def take the Prilosec or Prevacid. Prilosec usually takes a week before you feel any different. You take care of yourself!

I have tried everything for my reflux and gerd. I was so frustrated with this ongoing condition, the lack of sleep it causes and taking EVERY medication known to man that three nights ago at 2:00AM, I did some research. I know this sound like snake oil but I swear on the Baby Jesus that this works for me and I hope it works for everyone with this condition. Don't laugh. EAT A HALF OF A PEELED APPLE AN HALF HOUR BEFORE BED. I use a Golden Delicious apple and put it in the blender to make a raw applesauce with a touch of honey. I peel the apple but you dont need to peel it. I have a hard time with apple peels passing through my band. I promise it works. I haven't used Pepicid, Tums, Zantac,Pepto, etc....for the past three days and I am sleeping throughout the night. Check out the article http://www.livestrong.com/article/30092-cure-acid-reflux-apples/ I hope this helps. Leanne

I am officially 8 weeks out, and I still can't finish most of my food, even in small portions. You're right, I think I drink myself full with all of that Water, leaving little room for anything but my allotments of Protein and veggies. I carry a liter bottle around with me everywhere, and I am always amazed at how fast it gets empty. I hate to repeat myself from other posts, but if you're not all that in to water by itself, don't add flavorings, but rather get some good tasting bottle water. I've found that if I add Crystal Lite and so forth, my tongue expects sweetness at all times. But now that I just drink plain old H2O, I don't crave sweets much anymore. One more addiction down!

Am I Getting Enough Calories Post-OP?
FreeToBeMe posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All, I am a little worried about my calorie intake. I am in my third week post-op and I average around 300 calories a day. I drink one high protein shake in the morning and then eat about 2/3 of an egg with a little reduced fat cheese in the evening. Also I supplement with protein water to get that in. I just don't feel hungry and I am losing weight well but I am worried that my body is going to suffer taking in so few calories. My surgeon's office says don't eat if you are not hungry but still... I appreciate any advice. TIA, Pennie -
panniculectomy anyone?
makemyownluck replied to DeezJeanz's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I'm only 8 wks post op, but I know i'm gonna have to deal with this, so I've done my research! I've also worked in insurance for 10+ years doing the reviews for these exact surgeries, so here's what i can share: Panniculectomy is different from a tummy tuck because they don't tighten your abdominal muscles. They simply cut away the flap of skin and sew you back up. Now, it's a big incision, obviously, and it's uncomfortable to heal from. You might have difficulty standing straight up and cleaning yourself in the bathroom for a week or more. (longer if you actually get a tummy tuck because of how tight your abs are!) Insurance varies, so check with your carrier - not all insurances require that you've had skin rashes to get this covered. Your surgeon could take pictures and measure how long the flap hangs. If the skin hangs lower than your pubic bone, you can probably get it covered. Also, some carriers will pay for it if they approved your weight loss surgery because this could be considered a residual of the WLS. Long story short, it doesn't sound like a very pleasant experience, but it's something I plan on having to do eventually as well. I'm still focusing on getting anywhere close to goal, so it's a long way off for me. Hopefully, I can afford to pay for the tummy tuck portion myself so I can get the very best result! Good luck to you! -

Quick question!!
happy2lose replied to SweetAndy11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told by my surgeon that 1-2 pounds per week is average. Keep in mind that your body will plateau possibly for weeks at some point. Don't get discouraged, this is normal. Also, I have found that since I exercise a lot, sometimes it takes a while for the scale to catch up. This is why it is a good idea to take measurements of your body so that when this happens you can see the progress without the scale. I went all last month without losing but 4 pounds but I lost 10 inches. -
I am three months post surgery on Thursday and I just had a thyroid test. It shows my TSH is very low. I do take thyroid meds already. I don't know if I am taking too much or what. Anyone else have any thyroid issues after your surgery? I see my Dr. on Friday.

Any Advice on vitamins Post Op?
Diva T replied to Dtru's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my program we take Flinstone Complete chewables 1, 2 times a day. Viactive with vitD 500mg 1, 2 times a day and not within 2 hours of taking the multi vit/min. B12 sublingual 1 stopper full 2 times a week, Biotin 1, 2 times a day. I have a 3 month lab draw coming up on the 17th of this month. Hope my labs are good but if not adjustments to vitamins and supplements can be made. I get 70gms protein in with shakes every day. 4 oz in my coffee in the morning then 2 shakes throughout the day. 1 of the shakes right before bed to get me through the night. So I start and end the day with protein. I was told I'd be drinking shakes for at least 6 months. Yes I'm sick of them and the pill taking( vits & supplmts) but this is just part of having this surgery. It is a life long commitment. I've not missed an appointment yet either and don't intend to. I want to keep the weight off the rest of my life. -
Did I do something to my port???
Marimaru replied to housecatgirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was told to wait 6 weeks before lifting anything. You probably pulled on the muscles your port is settled in, which also strained the stitches. You are probably fine, but you might consider taking it easy for an extra couple weeks. -
I agree with Babs - the aftercare is absolutely critical to success. I'm based in the UK and went with a specialised weight loss company. The consultant put the following argument to me: surgeon's simply do a technical job of putting the band in place - so you really want one that has done the job many, many times to reduce the possibility of surgical complications. Supporting the patient afterwards however, is the job of others who are equally expert in their roles. So, the consultant (not the surgeon) conducts my band fills, I have a personal dietician, a dedicated weight loss mentor and access to an 8 week behavioural programme following surgery. Each member of 'my team' is there to offer different types of support -- something the average surgeon is neither qualified or particularly interested in doing.

I am so eager for these dr appt's/consults/seminars! Who in the world is ever EAGER to see a DR? This is NUTS! Tomorrow I go see my Dr. I hope she feels like I do - that this is a good thing in my case. I know she wants me to lose weight. I'm scared, though, that she's going to say 'do it yourself'. I will be doing it myself - but this tool will HELP give me feedback. I hope I don't come across as using this as a crutch - 'cause I certainly won't be and I certainly am not thinking that way. Seems to me, though, that no matter what I THINK I've said, people hear or read what they want to anyway. So while I say "this isn't a crutch, it's a tool, this isn't a crutch, it's a feedback mechanism", people will hear - "I need a crutch". I don't need a crutch. I need a lasting solution! Suffice it to say, tomorrow scares me. Wednesday, on the other hand, is oddly exciting. It's the consult. I know I'm fat. I know my BMI is too high. I know my insurance covers it and I know they want me to do six months of supervised dieting and exercise. I will be eager to get that started and am eager to meet the folks at the surgeons office and to feel like this is starting to go somewhere. And Thursday night my husband and I will attend a seminar. I figure at this point, with my research and my exploration and the fact that I'll have already been in for the consult, that it might be a lot of repetition. But repetition is good! And my husband and I hearing things together will undoubtedly lead to new questions and even clarification in some cases. I don't know why I'm so scared of tomorrow. Because even if she's not supportive, how hard is it to get a new doctor? One can generally find the answer they want if they look hard enough. And she's generally been supportive or helpful of me and my issues in the past. I just don't want hassle. I don't want demotivators. I don't want frustration. I know there will be some all over the place along this journey - that's what LIFE is and I've certainly encountered it before and come out stronger for it. Everything happens for a reason and all that.... Anyway, as I sit here at my desk trying to look at my data, I just can't stop thinking about tomorrow and the rest of this week!

I'm so glad I logged on after such a long time away from this forum!
janieb posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I read the posts here today and feel so much better about my weightloss journey. I've felt like a failure, after having lost 45 lbs. and now have come to a screeching halt on the scales. I haven't lost anything in 8 weeks and wasn't going to call the doctor to schedule an appointment because I thought he'd be mad that it looks like I haven't been trying hard enough. The thing is, it's actually a miracle that I haven't gained in 8 weeks. That never happened before. So, now I'll be seeing my doctor in mid January and I'll get back on track. -
At three weeks I was transtioning from purees to soft. My volume then was 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons, and I could never finish the last bite. Even at a year now, 6 liquid ounces is enough for about three hours for thick Soups or casseroles. Or I can now eat 2 solid ounces of Protein and 1/3 - 1/2 cup veggies.

Port rediculously close to surface....odd?
xoLisha posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so this is my first question here... I've been lurking for a little while. I drilled my doctors brain about everything pre-op...but I've come across a couple of obstacles lately within the last few days of surgery swelling going down.... that have me slightly concerned. (Yes, I plan on bringing this up to my surgeon/Clinic come Wednesday , first check up) My port.. (assuming so...on my right side.) small hard lump , directly under the skin.... I think because the swelling from surgery from the band went down... That I can now feel this? Q: Is it ALWAYS this close to the surface? does it usually go down? ...Fear of it coming out any closer to the surface. Kind of paranoid. Very tender in that location... Anyone have this concern or issue after surgery? its only been about 2 weeks. ( Again, just looking for any others who may share this experience, not looking to replace doctors...lol) Also I wanted to add.. directly under the staples/incision...its caving in... soggy little dip in my fat tummy. Normal? -
Are you happy with your sleeve plication surgery ?
nikki c replied to chowchows's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
I am band over plication and I love it. It's the best thing I even did! Was operated on on 6/27 and had no complications. I had a huge hernia and that did cause me pain afterwards. I am eating about 1/4 - 1/8 of what I used to. I wake up and weigh myself everyday, and almost every morning i'm down a pound. When I did WW I used to pray to lose one pound a week! Now it's DAILY!! My doctor plans on filling my band in my 4th week. He wants me feeling little to no hunger. I already have excellent restriction, though. I was torn bw band plication, VSG or just the band. I'm so happy I chose band plication!
