    just getting started

Congratulations!!!!, I too had my first surgeon meeting Yesterday 12th. I already had my EKG and lab work done, I already also did my sleep study, I been going to support groups, I met with the nutritionist, and already got my psyc app scheduled and my nutrition class scheduled as well. All i need is some test done and get a letter of medical necessity.. I am hoping for a November surgery date!! The surgeon says he requires a 2 week liquid diet, before the surgery.... thats not bad. and I need to loose 15 pounds before then.

    So Excited

Tomorrow will be my big day! How exciting, back in June I had an Attempted Gastric bypass n it failed due to not enough room to work inside towards my intestines, so this will bea 2nd attempt to get it doned i had to go on a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to loose a couple lbs n i lost 10lbs so hopefully this time it should be easier to get the surgery doned, also if the dr cAnt do the bypass they will do the lapband as a last resort. I really prayn ask for everyone here to please pray for me so that all goes good n for the dr to be able to do the bypass instead. Thank you all in advance
  5. I'm being banded in 1.5 weeks and just joined this forum. But my dad, who was banded approx 2 years ago started having severe left shoulder pain at the anticipation of eating and after eating. Anybody ever heard of this?
  6. Thanks! It's hard to believe its only 2 weeks away!!!
  7. I have gone to the seminar online. Met with the surgeon On 9/18/12. He told me I needed to lose 15 lbs along with multiple tests. As of today I have lost 5lbs, had stress test and barium swallow this morning. I scheduled for the sleep study next Wednesday and psych eval and nut the last week of Oct. I am hoping for surgery in January.
  8. Fellow Lap Banders, I really need some advice. I got banded on May 10th and everything was going fine till Sat night. I have only lost 20 pounds or so since pre-op and I had a gall bladder attack that took me to the ER. The pain was unbearable. After Ultrasound and CT Scan they found stones in my Gall Bladder and the Doctor recommeded removal of the Gall Bladder. So I just had surgery two weeks ago and now this surgery again? I am really freaking out about it. I never had any issues with my Gall Bladder before the Lap Band. I wanted to ask all of you, how long should one wait before having another surgery? Also is it really necessary to get the Gall Bladder out? Is the Surgery as easy as the Lap Band one? Has anyone had a surgery so soon after Lap Band. I am really discouraged and disappointed. Need serious advise please. Thanks to all of you for your help.
  9. Sorry about the length of this one. The week is coming to an end and I think I may have found a ounce of hope hidden behind my heart. My grandkids have been very concerned with grandma and worried because I was crying alot. So last night my 4 year granddaughter came to me and said to me please don't cry anymore I will happy you find hope it will be okay. To tell you the truth she made me cry even more. Then she gets her brothers and tells them that I am crying because I lost my hope and the 5 year old tell her and the 6 year old that I didn't lose hope because she was in school yesterday. I started to laugh and the 6 year old tells them that they should come to my room and tell me that I could have some of their hope, and again I started to cry. So I step back away from the door and thought about what they were talking about and about an hour later while we sat to eat dinner they asked if they could give me something to make me feel better and I told them yes to my surprise they handed me a little bottle fill with glitter it had three colors. While everyone watch them the 6 year year old said, " Because you show us so much love and caring we want you to stop crying and give you some of our hope. My color is silver, I.O.'s color is gold and nena's color is purple." We love you grandma. There was not a dry eye at the table. My friend says to me I see you rubbed off on them. Because I have a few of those bottles too. With that I went to bed thinking about what to do, so I said in the morning I will stop the crying and take some actions. I email the neuro doctor and told him what happen and stated that we need to do something about my ICS in the brain so I could get the surgery. He called me and we spoke he stated that I was okay to have the surgery and why didn't I have the anesthiologist he requested to assisted the surgeon. He then called the doctor and told him that the ICS is in the brain and they don't do anything for it at this stage and please use the anesthiologist he recommened to assist because he is know the case and how to handle it. So I will be a May sleever. I will continue the high Protein diet because since monday I have not been able to really eat much.

    Pregnant & Protein?

  11. Wow, with a family history like that, I'd say banding is a really good investment in your health and quality of life. It IS hard. You dont get banded and then automatically lose weight for very long as you'll quickly work out a way to get calories in if you really want to. Look, you have to WANT to change. You have to be willing to do what you would always have had to do to lose weight, only the band will help you to be a lot less hungry. But its a tough journey, and losing 100lb in a year doesnt always happen, it took me 2 years to lose that much. Any weight loss at all, even 10% of your body weight can do marvellous things for your health, so I'd suggest to not be so fixated on a goal like that, Exercise helps enormously too. What do I eat in a day and what are my portion sizes?. I dont measure to be honest, early in the day I can eat probably a cup worth of food, late in the day its 1/2 cup as I tend to be tighter at night. I eat all foods, I dont avoid carbs, but I dont eat a lot of white sugary carbs. I try to avoid too many processed foods, preferring fresh, I have the occasional glass of wine, a treat every now and then and I run for up to an hour most days of the week. To lose 100lb in a year if that's what you really want to accomplish, then I'd imagine you need to be stricter with the measuring and weighing than what I am, keep to the portion sizes suggested to your by your doctor, adjust your band so that those portion sizes satisfy you and make sure you do regular exercise in some form or another. If you MUST reach that goal and you really do not think you can live with the restrictions the band places on you and the amount of work you have to do for a band to be effective, then there's other weight loss surgeries to consider, I know nothing really about them so perhaps others can chime in there. I can tell you that it doesnt stop when you've lost the weight, I have not changed my routine or exercise now that I'm maintaining rather than losing. I'll have to do this for the rest of my life. You've only got a little time, I see. Dont go ahead if you're not ready, you need to think about it. However, whilst its VERY scary to contemplate it really feels perfectly normal when you get there. But you must be ready to follow the rules. Good luck!

    Slipped band-Surgery scheduled for Wednesday

I was banded on 10/2/07 but I got sick a couple of weeks ago and as a result my band slipped. My doctor gave me the option of waiting to see if it went back on its own so for the last two weeks I have been waiting with no fluid in the band. Well I got something stuck and ended up in the ER on 3/17 where my doctor said I would need emergency surgery. He said he might be able to fix it but if there was too much damage to my stomache he may have to take it out. He said if the damage was minimal he was going to take the band out and put in another one, the Realize band, that he felt had much less cases of slippage because it was wider. I had surgery, they put another band in, the Realize band and I am still on my full liquid diet with my follow appt. on Wednesday. I feel great and I am so relieved that I did not loose the band completely. I feel like I am recovering much faster this time around.

    3 days post op..

My doc is pretty specific - 70 grams protein and 30 grams carb - all from a liquid protein diet for 2 weeks. I think that comes to around 700 calories max. Good luck

    3 days post op..

According to the GoWearFit armband device, even on a day I would consider sedentary (lazy day), I burn about 1800 in a 24 hour period. On the days I work out, I get about 600 calories knocked out in an hour on the eliptical. But I don't do that EVERY day. For the past couple weeks, since the weather has cooled a little, I've been taking 2 20-minute walks (one mid to late morning and one mid afternoon). That gives me a couple of miles even before I get home. I use the treadmill and/or bike at home. I usually only go to the gym 2X a week. All of this is doable right now because my husband isn't working, so I have him playing Mr. Mom at home and all three of our young ones are in school - our baby just started kindergarten. So the timing is pretty good for me to give fitness more focus. Also, having dropped a big chunk of weight already, things are just EASIER right now. The thought of even a 20 minute walk a year ago would have been overwhelming - I would have worried about coming back to work all sweaty and gross, etc. Now? Easy-peasy. After my surgery, I took it easy and JUST walked the treadmill. I think I was 4-6 weeks out before I even went to the gym and got on the eliptical.
  15. I was always starving before surgery and prayed and prayed that this would be resolved for me post-op. I was so sad when I was still hungry at 7-8 weeks after surgery. I too take a PPI everyday and have for 8 years. I just felt so defeated. Alot of folks on here talk about false hunger from acid and I mentioned it to my surgeon and he said it was bolonga!! I took it upon my self to get some Prilosec OTC and try it insead of my Nexium. It took about 17 days of taking it befor I noticed a difference, but I seriously can tell a HUGE difference in my hunger now and I have been taking it for about a month now. I still get hungry, but I am not STARVING all of the time like before. If I go 5-6 hours without eating, my stomach will tell me, but I don't growl all damn day like before. I got my primary dr. to give me a prescription for the Prilosec because it is cheaper than buying it over the counter and I am now taking it everyday instead of the Nexium. If you can, get some Prilosec and try it. If it works have your surgeon switch you. Good luck! Kelly
  16. I'm at 10cc in a 14cc band, and I'm travelling to Peru for two weeks in October. I'll be taking part in some ceremonies with traditional healing plants, which are known to sometimes induce vomiting. Knowing that vomiting could be an issue with the band, I asked my doctor about this. Much to my surprise, he recommended that I get a partial (as in "most") unfill before my trip, and refill afterward. As he put it, you don't want to be out in the jungles of Peru, having a problem with the band. I have some real misgivngs about this idea. In talking with the guides leading my planned trip, the vomiting reaction is not really common (they've had only one person vomit, and he'd worked himself up ahead of time to the point that he was overanxious and probably brought it on himself). Naturally, I also worry about regaining weight during the trip. Finally, if I do get a "big" unfill before the trip, can it all be replaced afterward, or would I have to work up a little at a time, just as I did to get to my 10cc? Has anyone else here been temporarily unfilled for travel purposes? Has anyone not had an unfill prior to travel, and wish they had? Thoughts? Experiences?

    Stomach spasms

I am 4 days out and have pain around the same place when I drink and eat It is almost like a cross between gas pains and hunger pains. When the pain hits it is followed by some belching. It goes away immediately. I also had a hiatal hernia repair. The Dr. Discovered it during my surgery and went ahead and fixed it. The nurse who called for a follow up assured me it will go away but might take a couple of weeks. I am just wondering if this pain is related more to the hiatal hernia than it is the sleeve?
  19. Hello all, this is really my first real post. I was banded on 06/05/09 and haven't really had too many problems until now. Two weeks ago it felt as if my band had tightened itself, I couldn't eat much at all, but could still handle liquids. Then, over a week ago, I could no longer handle any solids OR liquids. I throw up EVERYTHING. I had the worst reflux/heartburn I've ever had in my life, just from a sip of water. One sip of water would cause that extreme pain for about 4 hours. I didn't think it had anything to do with my band, so I went to a GI specialist, he did an Upper GI and ended up having to stretch my esophagus bc it was swollen shut, and took a biopsy to see if I have berrits disease. I was able to hold down 2 glasses of water and 6 small shell noodles that night. But the next day my problems were back. I have not been hungry at all, and I have not been nauseated either. When I throw up it's just like my body is rejecting it, the water comes back up as a foam. I'm able to drink vitiman water/powerade a little bit easier than water (not much) but it comes flying out the other end shortly after! I cannot lay down without throwing something up, I have to sleep sitting up. Someone please help me! What could be wrong?!?!??
  20. My surgeon ordered a 2 week liquid protein diet for 2 weeks for all of his patients.....nothing else.......at least you get to eat one meal a day..........this is to shrink your liver so that it is easier to get to your stomach for the operation........I have never even fasted for a day or drank liquids for a day in my life...will be doing it 2 weeks....yikes.........liquid protein drink 3 times a day......oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. Well, tomorrow morning is the time for me!!! The nerves are starting to set in! I'm nervous, anxious and excited all rolled into one!!! Funny how our emotions vary in just a 24 hour period! I work the grave shift and on Saturday night, my last night for 4 weeks, I was a crybaby!!! Made a mistake and just started crying!!! Then in the morning after work when we all sit down and have coffee I made a stupid mistake on the envelope of a card and started crying again!!! Wow! I sure hope I make it thru the morning without crying. Have to be to the hospital at 5:30 a.m. Surgery is at 7:30. My poor husband, bless his heart, is being so good. I feel so bad because today is his birthday and I wish we could just go have a burger together but it's all liquids for me today!! He just had to settle for a card. Thanks to everyone who through my getting ready has answered questions in the past. I'll still be on here frequently I'm sure with more post-op questions!!! Have a great day and stay warm!!! It's -14 F here as I type with a windchill of I don't know what!!!

    Fills and Restriction?

no rhyme or reason. i had to have a small unfill after 6 days because couldn't keep anything down. now some days i feel restriction and others i don't and can consume way too much food. mornings are impossible can't eat but a couple of bites and in the evening can eat a lot. can't decide if a need more fill or what. it's been nearly 2 weeks since my unfill. haven't lost a thing since then. ugh. what to do what to do

    Hair Loss

Remembering to take meds takes 1) resolve and 2) a system. I use pill minders... those containers with one or more compartments for each day of the week. There are several different kinds, and the one you select is normally based on the number and size of pills you want to remember to take. The system I use includes one 4-compartment container for each day of the month. The 4 compartments are Breakfast, lunch, dinner and Bedtime. I fill up all the containers at one time, once a month, and I can fit in all my post-sleeve Vitamins and minerals except the Calcium. For that I've purchased 4x4" ziplock baggies, and every Sunday I fill one for each day of the week. Each weekday I carry one 4-compartment container and one little ziplock with me to work, and I take the appropriate meds at the appropriate times. Hope that helps!
  24. Anyone having surgery on the 27th? I am looking to connect with someone to just chat with :)  If not, any helpful words of advice for me?  I am wondering if I should take a stool softener the week leading up to surgery to I’m *cough* clear things out. Hahah
