How long does it take ?

it honestly depends on your insurance requirements and how quick you want the procedure done. Although my insurance didn't require the 6 month diet, I had a list of test and doctors to see.....I took a week off of work and finished my requirements in 2 months. Now awaiting for the doctor office to submit to my inusrance
  2. I am happy with my decision to have the surgery and I am pretty happy with the total amount of lbs/inches I have lost. However, I am very frustrated with my current rate of loss. I had a teeny little mini-stall at 2 weeks postop and broke on through it within about 4 days (so I'm not sure I could really call it a stall). Now I am 5 weeks out and haven't lost (actually have gained) ANYTHING in almost 2 weeks. Maybe this is more my stall than the first one was? I am working really hard to get in my calories and protein and getting in all my fluids. I go to the gym every morning at 530 for 45 minutes to an hour. I know this is probably my body adjusting and getting used to the new lifestyle but it is so disheartening. Can some of you tell me what a typical day's food is like for you as well as exercise? I'm trying so hard and have just gotten started - I didn't think it would get this difficult to take off the lbs. this soon....would love any tips or encouragement!
  3. I have logged my food since I started this journey. It works very well for me. Calorie intake is important but just as important is the make up of the calories. How much Protein, Fats and carbohydrates are you taking in. I am 5 months out and have been doing low carb, < 50 per day. In the last few weeks I have upped my carbs to 60-70 per day and it has made a big difference with energy levels. I am still losing weight steadily, but have the energy to exercise and I feel good about it.

Well I'm grossed out. I was drinking my morning protien shake and it took until about half of it was gone befor I started to think it tasted a little funnier than usual. The milk in my fridge had soured slightly. YUCK! The date on the milk says it's still good for a week but not for me it's not. :car: On a good note I lost 10lbs this first week on my pre-op diet. I know that number won't repeat itself but feel it is a good start. Still can't believe that I have three more weeks of this... I guess I'm a quarter of the way there. I'm trying to be optimistic but that sounds like a looooong time right now. Hope everyone's journey is going well! Until next time:). rode bike 30 min.

[Texgal, how were your appts? What about you Minnie? what's your status.] Thank you for asking. Btw, congrats on having a teen driver in your home. We'll be going through that w/our 15 yr old son very soon. LOL Appt went fine (although I had to commit to giving up Pepsi's & Dr. Peppers --LOL) The psych doc. took my file w/him on vacation .. (how odd) .. so my records didn't get to the surgeon last week. I was assured the records would be faxed to the surgeon on the 9th & then they will submit everything to BCBS. If I'm approved, then we go forward w/Nutritionist, Chest X-ray. Cross your fingers for me. P.S. I've had to log in here a few time to keep from drinking a Dr. Pepper!! I guess I "am addicted". LOL
  6. Hello - my name is Anne and I got the lapband on my 43 birthday - over 2 years ago. Dr. Chand was my doctor at the Cleveland Clinic - and he did a great job - I haven't had any problems - and have lost about 70lb. I need to lose about 100lb total to be at my goal weight - and I have been at a stall for the past 6 months or so - I have only ever had 2 fills, the last being over a year and a half ago. I still have good restriction - somedays too good - so I don't feel my stall is from lack of restriction - I still can only eat small amounts - but my choices haven't been the best and I have been picking on slider food - crackers and chips are my huge down fall - I am determined to get it back on track this summer and want to lose 10lbs by Sept when I go back to school. I am a teacher - and have 3 children - am married 23 years tommorrow to a pretty awsome guy. We are both off all summer - and we enjoy going on our boat, camping and taking our kids to swim meets and softball and baseball games. We have 2 bearded collie dogs - who we love to death - and one cat we wish we didn't she isn't a bad cat - but older with litter box issues so she ends up living in the basement as she has ruined a few carpets. I came here as I know the one way to get back to basics and get back on track is to be accountable and talk and listen with others who are going through this. I have been a slow loser - which is ok with me - I know the 70lbs I lost are never coming back -and and if I take it slow and steady I will reach my goal eventually - I just am taking time to enjoy the journey - it has been a wonderful ride - many small nsv that just creep up on you - one thing I am trying to incorporate this summer is exercise - my dh and I have been walking every morning - for 45 minutes - this is a huge thing as I hate exercise and lost the 70lbs without any exercise at all....so hopefully we will continue! Looking forward to coming on here and sharing and learning! Huggs! Anne
  7. I had to stop my birth control 1 month before surgery and wasn't able to start taking it again til 6 weeks after surgery. It really sucked as I had 2 periods in 5 weeks after surgery which was aweful.
  8. Yes my BMI was much higher than yours and my surgeon didn't require it either. He just said to work on eating much smaller meals and not to worry about wanting a big meal as I wouldn't want it anymore...also said to start getting used to eating very slow but no pre op diet other than the NUT's advice I was following on my diet plan for 6 months...oh and to have your "last meal" or whatever you really wanted to have a few days to a week out, not the night before... good luck to you
  9. I did something similar. I didn't eat massive amounts of food, but I did eat every single thing I thought I would miss after. However, Traci is absolutely right - you are not prohibited from eating anything. You just can't eat the quantities you used to. For me, I do get hungry. I also miss being able to eat a large volume, however, I'm praying that will change. I do find myself tempted, but then I remember that my stomach can hold so little, that I better make it worthwhile. I have had every one of my food weaknesses offered to me over the past 3 weeks, and I looked at them, knew I was allowed to eat them, but just decided not to - why open the door to foods that landed me in this spot in the first place? I'm not a food lover - I'm a junk-food lover. It was a road to obesity and diabetes. I'm now on the road to weight loss and glucose control. I'm not mourning the loss of food at all, and I hope you don't either.

Hi Mariana, congratulations and welcome! It's very exciting turning our lives around like this. I am so happy to have my band. It's been three months and I feel like I'm getting a handle on my new lifestyle. It takes some time to get the fills right, etc., but it has gone very smoothly. Best wishes to you -- it's fun to think of spring and where we will be, then summer, etc. Eventually a year out, two years -- I'm not setting any records for loss but it is working and I'm getting there bit by bit. I know I will succeed, which is completely new thinking for me after so many failed dieting attempts. This is a lifestyle change. Yippee!
  11. Hey everyone, I'm about 4 1/2 months post surgery. I never had trouble with acid reflux/heartburn BEFORE surgery, but since the surgery, it has been REALLY bad. It always happens in the middle of the night when I'm sound asleep, I jolt out of bed with a sour burning taste in my throat and then I usually gag/spit up some yellow acid (like the xenomorph in Alien) and it just feels unbearable for about 15 minutes or so and then goes away. At first it happened about once a week, but now I'd say it's more like 2-3 times a week. They put me on 40 mg of prevacid or one of those pills right after surgery and I took it for the first month, but then I stopped because the reflux didn't seem too bad and I was worried about the side effects. So of course it came back and that's when it's been getting worse. I just got my rx refilled and yesterday was the first day of starting back on medication, but last night I still woke up with the reflux from hell. I have mentioned this to my doctor, and he basically said "drink more, eat less, get back on the prescription". But I'm worried about this acid either causing esophogeal cancer or literally burning a hole through my esophagus. Maybe that sounds silly, but that's what it feels like and I've already had Breast Cancer, so I am worried about being susceptible to other forms of cancer. Anyone have experience with this and advice or anything that stopped it completely? The assistant in the Doctor's office said that the hernial repair they did during the surgery usually helps with GERD/Reflux, but I told her I never had issues with it prior to the surgery and she sounded surprised. Thanks for any suggestions.
  12. 1 week. I have a desk job though. I dunno...haven't gone yet. Not sure why it would though. Nope. Nope. I didn't feel the port at all. You shouldn't feel it. The pain is all at the incisions since that's where the cuts are. Ask your doc. I was cleared for full cardio 1 week after surgery. Then cleared for weight lifting and swimming 6 weeks after surgery. No. Please make sure you understand the band -- asking this question suggests that you don't really know how it works. The band is meant to be lived in. You can do all things. Never feel my band at all. The maker of the band, Inamed, STRONGLY suggests that no one has their band filled at all during surgery. They request 6 weeks of healing before the band starts being filled. Didn't have that issue. I'd go with softer, gentler foods then. Might even go to liquids if you have severe heartburn. Call your doc. jayme
  13. Hi Everyone, I am a newbie & I finally began my journey to my new self this past week & I hope to have my Surgery approved & scheduled before the end of the year. My Insurance, BC PPO, requires that I have the surgery through a COE site, the BMI, & a Psych & Nutritional Evaluation for them to approve the surgery. The first 2 COE'S I contacted advised me that they charged $3,000-$3,500 upfront, out of pocket, non-negotiable, & non-billable for Fees, Classes, etc. :wink2: This is why I decided to go out of my local area & have my surgery in Reno, NV. Although they are a COE, they never heard of the outrageous additional costs being charged by the other two. Has anyone else had charges like these? Just curious. I am not a huge Water drinker & I am terrified that I will not be able to drink the liquid diet that I will be required to drink for the 4 weeks prior to surgery. Has anyone got any suggestions on what I can drink that tastes good? I am a bit picky about tastes. I like sweet (unfortunately) tastes. I'm afraid that if I can't find something drinkable I will sabotage my own beginning. I need some help.

    problem finding port!

It has happened to me and it freaked me out!!! I went last week to have my band deflated before I go out of town and the nurse missed it twice. What bothered me the most was not that she missed...I understood why but it was just the pushing on my port that had me wanting to get sick and pass out!!! The third time was the charm!! She explained to me that as you lose weight, the fat around your port goes away or shifts and it allows the port to move and tilt, so it isn't facing out like it did when I first got it. And then after she took out the saline and needle my adrenaline went out of this world!!! I was moaning and groaning and in cold sweats! They said I sounded like a woman in labor with all my moaning!! I just was freaked out and I didn't want to pass out so I was breathing really hard and I started to cry. But after it was over and I calmed down I was joking around with the nurses and we were all laughing together and laughing at me. So we made light of the situation! I go on 03-09-06 to have my fill done but that is going to be by the doctor himself so I am looking forward to that! The nurses do the deflations at the office and he does the fills at the surgicenter so he can check the restriction with the barium swallow. But I guess this is just part of the whole process and stuff that you sometimes have to deal with. But it is worth it! :biggrin1:
  15. I am two weeks out following Gastric Bypass surgery. I started my journey at 288lbs. and now I am 270lbs. It’s been trying these last two weeks but, the surgery has worked miracles in my life already! For that I am very grateful. I have never been less than 200lbs in my adult life, and I am anxious about that possibility. Yet, my health takes paramount and is the reason why I made the decision to have the surgery done. I have joined BariatricPal for a bit of insight and inspiration. It is my hope that by the end of this, I may inspire someone too.
  16. Hi, I was banded March 18,2009. Almost 4 weeks have passed and I am still having pain at my port site. I only have this pain when I am sitting or when I rise up from sitting. This is when I feel the most pain at the port site. It appear to be getting worse, should I be worried? Is this normal? Is there any one out there who has experienced this discomfort also? Will it go away?
  17. I go to the bariatric solutions where dr. stowers is. I had my lapband surgery by dr. dirk rodriguez his partner at the time on aug 2 2011. dr. stowers is the one there now cause dr. dirk left. i saw dr. stowers for my 1 week follow up after surgery. he seemed nice and my first fill on aug 30 will be done there not sure who does fills yet him or nurses. i'll know more by then.my surgery went wonderful. they are both known for excelence.they use the glue strips on the cuts and i had very little discomfort no bleeding or oozing at all im a little over 3 wks out and i was amazed at my easy recovery at 57 yrs old and over 300 lbs. i was very worried. it was a breeze for me and i hear both doctors are similar in their procedures.dr dirk put my incisions in a area that was least to bother me i came home and hopped up on my bed to get on my mini laptop computer no problems.the lift chair i bought in anticipation i would need to help me up and to sleep in as it reclines i never used it my husbands easy chair now lol. any way i cant tell u enough how happy i am with that place and im sure dr. stowers is no different.i had very minimal gas no shoulder pain.took no meds after second day. i think you will be pleased by the outcome of your surgery.i also stayed overnight because of my insurance and i kept refilling my ice pack they gave me it helps too.also had no nausea ever... good luck hope this helps

    Driving Post Op

I drove after a week, I was of pain meds. It was a little uncomfortable but not to bad. surgery date 08-01-12
  21. I am having this issue too, I want to let my work know when I will need to take time off. When I asked when my surgery would be I was told 2-3 weeks, depending on how fast I can get my pre-tests done. Since I am a cash patient, it will go faster for me, but I want to start this new journey. I do not want to wait. Good luck with things.
  22. Ok, so I know there are lots of posts on stalls. I had my surgery 4.5 weeks ago. Lost 17lbs the first week. Weeks 2-4, it's been slow and I eventually lost 4 more lbs (but it's been up and down). On a side note, it's cruel that we see such a huge weightloss so quickly in the beginning and it slows down dramatically almost overnight and we get upset for "only" losing 1-2 lbs a week. I have to keep reminding myself this is a normal pace. Anyway, I know that even with the sleeve, it's possible to eat more calories than you think you are - darn foods are deceiving! So, I'm wondering if maybe what I'm eating is too many calories, hence the reason for the SLOW loss. I know I'm eating way under 1,000 calories, probably more like 500 calories (I know, I should track my calories better). Is this too many calories this early on? For example, I had about 1/4 cup of chicken salad with grapes (real mayo, can't stand fat free), and half an avocado. Tonight, I will have two turkey slices rolled with about 4 slices of pepperoni inside. This doesn't sound like a lot, but I know how food portions and actual calories can be deceiving. Should I be anything different?
  23. Hi, I have so many questions since I was banded today. I take blood pressure medication and it is a direutic (like a water pill). My doctor told me not to take it? Has anybody else's doctor told them not to take their blood pressure medication after surgery? When I do not take it, I get headaches and retain lots of water. It is a vey uncomfortable feeling. I have my first post-op appt. next week and hopefully he will tell me that I can start taking it again. Thank you everybody.

    Protein Shakes

I think they're important for pre-op and post op to make sure you get enough protein. I have 6 weeks of liquids so I'll be having quite a few of them. I like Unjury, chicken soup is really good and mixes great, as do their shakes, they taste good too. You'll find tons of different kinds on this forum that people talk about, but we all have different tastes. The nice thing is some of the sites have sample packs available, Unjury.com, ohyeah.com and bariatricchoice, com to name a few. good luck! Deb
  25. Finally taking responsibility for my slow loss. I'm eating too slow and making bad choices. Before I go for my next fill I am making the commitment to give the band a fair chance. Was banded sept.30 2012 and only down 30 lbs. this week my goals are not to give into sugar cravings, log all meals and work out 3 times...at least 20 minutes. Anyone else wanna join up, support and encourage weekly concentration on band success!
