VSGAnn is asking the right questions. I lost 19 pounds in the first month. Nowhere close to 50. Around weeks 3-4, most people stall out for a week or so. All normal.

I had one sticking out of each end of my largest incision. I dabbed some Neosporin on them and covered them with a little bandaid. They took about a week to fall off. To me it looked like fishing line, lol!

Had my first fill yesterday. Surgery was 5/7. The fill was a breeze. Didn't feel a thing, and no "deadener" applied. I have a 4cc band and he inserted 1.5cc. Am on liquids today, then am to eat til I'm full (and keep an accurate measurement of how much that is) and report back on my next visit. He said that will help him know how much to fill next month. Doing pretty well. Have lost 13 pounds in 5 weeks. Weighing at 210 now. Can't wait to get below 200. Gotta up the exercise!!

I am posting this with the thought that my experience may be helpful to folks....This morning I went in for my first fill (I was banded on May 2nd). I was pretty nervous at first, but everyone (True Results in Richardson) was so nice, I calmed down right away. After weighing in, a blood pressure test, and the nurse listening to my breathing and such, I signed some papers acknowledging that I essentially know what's going on. Then, the nurse injected my tummy with a shot of lidocaine (she said she usually does that for us first-timers). She poked around on me a little, then found the port. The nurse inserted the needle in my port and added .8 cc of saline. Afterwards, I sipped water for 30 minutes to make sure it would go down. During that time, I visited with a "patient educator". She is a really kind lady who has been banded for several years now. For the first time in my life, I had someone with whom I could actually talk and ask questions -- nice. Anyways...I am now on full liquids for 2 days. After that, I move up to soft foods for another 2 days. Then, I start solids...I am pretty antsy about that, to be sure. Well, that is about it. Pretty uneventful. I'm a bit sore from the injection, but that is about all. I go back in 2 weeks to see if I need more/less fill. Good luck to all of you with your first fill - I hope y'all's go as smoothly as mine!

Not losing weight but losing sizes.....confused
BrendaLH replied to debrainwater's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I totally understand where you are coming from. I have was watching my scale move, move, move and then Bam nothing! I work out 4 times a week at the gym and was getting really discouraged, but I was dropping pant, top and bra sizes so I was confused too. My trainer told me I was building up muscle and thats why I was losing the inches. I also was eating alot of soft foods (because they were safe) during that time. I started eating more protein based foods and boy did the scale start dropping. Keep up the good work! Classes/Pre-Surg/Current/Goal 316lbs/292lbs./247lbs./180ish -
Hello Everyone, It is a week pre-op for me and I am trying to get myself prepared. With all this volcanic ash flight disruption I may not be going anywhere! Looking for advise on what steps I need to take to prepare for my post-op homecoming? In particular what do I need to buy in to have ready? All tips and suggestions welcome. Bookleen

Hi Lyn, I am pleased to "meet" you. I will be going to the same surgeon as you, but a week earlier so I can give you an idea of what to expect. I don't know of anyone else who has gone there. Do You? I decided to book an extra night in the hotel, it helps to make me more confident. Probably not needed but I feel better about it. Regards, Bookleen

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to get too nervous. For me, being prepared, and reading up on the surgery and what to expect helped a lot. I had laproscoptic gall bladder surgery awhile ago, and I didn't have any problems with the residual gas, so I was surprised when I kept reading about people having problems with it. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't have any real issues with the gas after my lap band surgery last week either. I was gassy and I felt bloated, but I didn't have shoulder pain or anything like that. I took a few Gas X pills after a day or two, but all in all, it wasn't even remotely painful. Maybe you'll be lucky too.

I am having my gastric bypass surgery on Aug. 24. I have been on my pre op diet for almost 2 weeks. Nothing but clear liquid on the day before surgery. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Hi everyone, how many calories are you eating a day. I am six weeks out from VGS and was eating 500 to 600 a day. Then I re read my instructions and realized I wasn't drinking my protein drinks. Then I added them in and I am now eating 800 to a 1000. I am gaining weight [2 pounds] in the last three days. What should I do? Anyone had experience with this problem. Am I eating too much, I am on mushie foods. Scrambled egg, half a piece of toast, tuna and mayo with 4 soda crackers, and Chili with beans for supper. Then two protein drinks. I measure the tuna and It is 1/2 a cup and the chili is 1/2 cup too. I would appreciate anyone else who was sleeved on July 1st or there about helping me out with this problem. Thanks

Hi all I am Kylie a 39yo from Melbourne. This is my first post here because I am pre-band with my first consult on 1 Feb. I have been researching this topic for some weeks after my GP suggested Lap Band Surgery the second time! Should have listened the first time. I am nearer to 100kg than I would like. Earlier in the year I was 90kg but my dad got very sick in Feb and I eventually lost him to prostate cancer and my brother-in-law to a heart attack both in September. I play netball three nights per week, have three young kids and am sick of being big. My size is not in my tummy area but my thighs and my massive bottom!:biggrin1: I describe myself as a Serena Williams without the boobs! I will do this with trepidation as I guess we all have been through the flutters thinking about this life changing event. But I am interested in the emotional side of things like: What will it be like to walk into a shop and buy anything fashionable off the racks? What will it be like to walk past 'My Size' without walking in to buy something? How did it feel during the journey to your goal? What was it like to make the changes in your lives? Was it a constant battle? I am 'vomitphobic':) so is it likely I will vomit! I have read most of the aussie thread and I just love the pictures. I would love to add mine, when the time is right though. I would love to be an inspiration to others just like you have been for me. I look forward to learning and sharing from and with the list here more. I am tempted to start the Optifast now, but that might sabotage my first appointment, but I am sick of being this size..... Hugs Kylie

Hi Tina, I also never knew what it was like to be thin. I haven't had any major problems regarding my weight but definitely experienced soreness, tiredness and poor balance (resulted in a broken ankle 5 years ago). I also researched it all thoroughly and decided the lap band was the way to go. I have been banded for exactly six weeks, down 27 lbs and am feeling a little better already. I do worry about the problems Donali and DeLarla are having and it does scare me. Like prior people have said, the risks for the band are still far less than the by-pass. Good luck, Teresa

Hi Tina and Welcome! I too have been overweight for as long as I can remember, I looked into the bypass until my neighboor suddenly was looking thinner and thinner everytime I saw her. I finally asked her what she had been doing to lose all her weight and she was the one who told me about the band. From that moment on I was addicted to finding out as much info as I possilby could. Checking the internet and picking her brain I knew this was the surgery for me. I'm so happy with my choice. I have been banded for 11 weeks and have lost 29 pounds of this morning with minimal effort. It has changed my life! This is a great site with loads of information and experienced bandsters. Everyone here is so supportive. I had my surgery doen in Mexico because my insurance would not cover the band and I did not want to waste precious time trying to fight it so I self payed. I sold my most precious possession, my mustang convertible GT which I know once I lose this weight I will want that car back to cruise around town in my new skinny body but oh well, it was so worth it . I would of never been able to do it otherwise. The sacrafices we make for being thin! Good Luck in your decision...

If you have a desk job you could be back to work in a couple of weeks. If you have a job that is more manual labor or requires lifting you will need to take more time. I went back to work 10 days after my surgery, and though I was pretty well healed and feeling really good I wish I had taken the full 2 weeks off in hind sight. Gathering information is the best way to help you learn and make the most informed decision.

Hi.... I had surgery on Weds, 4th September 2013. I had taken Thursday and Friday off thinking that I would go back to work on Saturday 7th September. Wrong. I had to take 7th & 8th September off too. I went into work on Monday 9th September. I am a police officer, I am at management level. This was too soon. Even to sit at a desk..... My advice would be to take 2 weeks off work after surgery. I am fit, active and can cope with pain. You need time to let the wounds heal and adjust to the new feelings inside your body and head.

When are you having your first band fill?
laura71 replied to hokiemama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Banded November 24 and first fill is Dec 17. Have my one week post op today, and should get green light for mushies! Cream of wheat here I come. -
Hi all- I was banded on April 27th of this year. I have lost all total (including pre-op) 58 lbs. I am so thankful and happy for that. However, after my last fill, I have lost maybe 2 lbs...and it has been three weeks! I am now not making great choices as far as food ( but not horrible either). I am so frustrated as I am (and have been) about 4 lbs from a MAJOR milestone on the scale. I got on the scale today and it showed I gained about 1.5lbs....from what, I am not sure. A little weight gain from the choices I made maybe but not 1.5 lbs! I am even exercising 3 times a week for 1.5 hours. I would love someone that I could talk to, who can understand, who can be an accountability partner. I can be that for someone else too. Thanks- Jen

Stomach Tightness/pain
Lissa replied to LauraKitty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I couldn't sleep on my left side for a while, but that's where my drain was and the incision there was a bit sore. Because of the incisions, there are places that hurt some after surgery. For each incision on the outside, there was an instrument placed inside our bodies, and that gives many opportunities for soreness. I'm not sure how far post-op you are, but I'm assuming you are under a month out. If the pain is just soreness, I wouldn't worry about it too hard unless you can feel a lump or bump under there or you see blood, pus, or other evidence of infection. It's definitely something I'd mention at the next doc appt, but it's probably nothing. I have a new ouch spot near where my drain came out. It hurts when I sit hunched over with my elbows on my thighs. I asked about it last week and it turned out to be a fibroid. I knew I had the fibroids, but didn't realize that it would be something I could feel from the outside. Losing the fat deposits that have covered it for so long makes it tender to the touch. Perhaps this is what is happening to you? If you're having sharp pains, or if it affects your ability to stand, walk, or exercise, then it is a good idea to call your doc sooner. And, of course, if you're really concerned about it, it's always a good idea to call the doctor. It's better to have them tell you that it's nothing than to go in and find out it really was a big deal. Good luck! Let us know what happens. -
well fod bless you i've been post-op for 2 weeks and havent been able to hold nothing down no shakes no liquids just plain nothing. Looking foward for tomorrow with my surgeon

New Anti-Depressant Medication Effect Pouch?
HappyHomeCC replied to McSteph100's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not been banded yet but I am concerned about stuff I am taking, I am taking capsules of prilosec and they kill me when they open up inside my stomach... caplets are easier on me. It says on my pharmacy paper I can open them up onto a soft food but not chew, so I am thinking, yogurt may be the best choice. I am also taking zoloft as of 10 days ago. 50mg I didn't like how I was feeling 6 or 7 days in so I have been breaking them in half vs taking a whole one...... Dr thinks my anxiety issues are creating the acid situation. This is all new to me. Only about 5 weeks ago. My preop endoscopy did not show any thing unusual and the h-pylori was neg. -

Week 2 Foods...what Should I Be Eating?
Dooter replied to Pookeyism's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
This is how my diet is going to progress when I get mine done. My surgeon is on the conservative side when progressing to the next level, and he has a very very very low leak rate. He will have me on full liquids, as you can see, up through week 3. Then blenderizedfoods for 2 weeks after that, then so on. Phase One Bariatric Clear liquid Diet (The first few days) Phase Two Bariatric Full liquid diet (Weeks 1-3) Phase Three Bariatric pureed Protein Diet (Weeks 4-5) Phase Four Bariatric Soft Protein Diet (Weeks 6-8) Where you are right now, this plan would have you at 60 oz. of fluids per day, and 40-50 gm of Liquid Protein. His reason for that is that is protects you from early complications, and gives you good nutrition for healing. Heres what he suggests: What to Drink All phase 1 liquids (clear) (also, kellogs k20 is clear and has protein) BariEssential™ protein supplementOptifast® protein supplement (contains lactose) Bariatric Advantage™ protein supplement Milk or Lactaid (lactose free) milk Soy milk Strained fat free cream Soups (American Heart Association green label with heart) Strained cold cereals (oatmeal, farina, cream of wheat) Im just giving you all of this, so you can see another docs perspective on it. I havent had this done yet, so I cant personally comment, but this is an example of a more cautious approach than some Ive seen on here. You hangin in there, sweetie??? --danielle That was weird! When I clicked this in, it splayed out a bunch of code or something! Forgive my lack of punctuation, but it made everything all freaky, so I have to take out the apostrophes. Weird man. Probably because I copied and pasted from an emailed doc. Oh well... -
Thanks everyone for your wonderful inspiring words during my very emotional 2 more weeks to surgery. Things are going better. My Mom was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago and thank God is in remission but it was in her lower stomach now all I can think about is "Oh when they open me up (laproscopic) they'll have to quit and not be able to do my surgery, they'll find something wrong with me. Now, why, would a normal human being set and think of stupid crap like that. Lord, I'll be so glad to be banded, healthy, and home. Love you all, SHerri

On August 15th,2006, Elvira Arrelano was ordered to report for deportation, three years after she was found guilty of entering the country illegally and using a stolen Social Security number to obtain work. (Why it took three years to deport an illegal alien criminal I don't understand) She found sanctuary in a church near Chicago and defied authorities attempts to deport her. Finally, last weekend, ICE grabbed the uppity foreign bitch and deported her ass back to her rightful place, Mexico. Some facts: She entered this country illegally in 1997,was captured, and deported. She re-entered, again illegally, a few days later. Sometime in 1999, she spawned a bastard in Oregon, and eventually moved to Chicago, where she was arrested again, in 2002. Why she wasn't deported at this time makes no sense to me. She's claiming she needs to stay in the USA to be with her American-born fatherless son, who needs care for his ADHD. Of course, this 'care' probably comes from the same pocket of the US taxpayer as his hospital delivery did, along with the subsidized housing she was using, the free school lunch program that fed him, the food stamps she was issued, and likely a welfare check as well. Actually, it was she who separated herself from her child, refusing the final free-ride-for-two she was offered, opting instead to leave her child with friends in Chicago to be used as a political prop. I'm getting tired of the news copy that refer to this criminally unfit mother as an 'Immigrant Rights Activist', casually leaving out reference to the illegal part of those she is activating for (mainly, herself). Now I suppose we have to refer to John Dillinger as an advocate of banking reform? Or NAMBLA as a Child Rights Advocate? She ain't a hero. She's a lawbreaker who has already shown disrespect for our legal system, our taxpayers, our culture (after 10 yrs, she still hasn't a rudimentary grasp of English), and motherhood. Good riddance, Mojada. And may your son be better off without you. I know the rest of America will be.
