  1. I am scheduled for a revision to bypass Dec. 16. I had a lap band for about 4 1/2 years and lost all the weight I wanted to--maybe even more than I wanted. But those 4 1/2 years were not much fun as I was vomiting a lot and was quite malnourished at times, I believe. In fact I ended up having emergency lung surgery for a massive lung infection, probably due to aspirating something when I vomited and my body having no strength to fight it. The lap band was removed 13 months ago due to an out-pouching in the esophagus and I have regained all of the weight I lost after surgery and a little more. My only alternative now is bypass. I can't say I'm 100% committed to having this surgery and feel I need a lot more information before making that decision. I actually live in Mexico but will have the surgery in Portland, OR, for insurance purposes. That is also where I had my lap band inserted and removed. But because of the distance I cannot be there for support group or appointments with the surgeon and others to ask more questions. So I hope I can get lots of answers and support on this group. I've already bought my plane ticket to fly to Portland about a week before surgery but I would gladly lose that money or just go visit friends and family rather than make a mistake in going ahead with this surgery. So, here goes my first question: I have heard from the dietician about the liquid diet and then the "mushy" diet following the surgery, but what I don't have a grip on is what will I be able to eat long term. I'd like to hear what you eat, especially things you enjoy. I also want to know what you can't eat, especially things you have tried that resulted in problems for you. I appreciate any input you can give me on these questions. I know I'll have many more in the next several months.

    Second surgery!?!?

I developed Gerd after i was sleeved and my surgeon advised that if my symptoms got worse that there is no other option but to go ahead with a bypass. Luckily medication is working for me so far but i do have to sleep with a tonne of pillows to keep me upright. I have since had only one nasty incident which viciously woke me up at 2am and kept me up for the rest of the night/morning. I really hope you get some relief with the acid as your case sounds to be an extreme case. Wish you all the best with your weight loss journey. Please keep us posted on your status with this, as i for one am very interested as this may be a decision i may have to make one day in the future. Xox

    Flipped port

Has anyone had their port flipped? I had a revision sugery yesterday for this reason. I thought the procedure would be much more smoother than my lapband surgery 16 mths ago.
  4. Hi, I'm post-op gastric bypass 3 weeks. For me I felt good almost immediately, got up and walked as soon as it was allowed. Went home the next day. However, the second day home, because I felt so good I decided to walk. I then took on the task of sorting through boxes of papers. The following day, ugh not good, of course I had overdone it. That was my worse day...

How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?

Thought I would post an update! I decided to go with the bypass. In the long run I think I will find the most benefit from the surgery because of its effects on diabetes. I got a call from my surgeons office and my surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 19!
  6. Same as you I chose bypass as it's the best and more aggressive and was unable to get DS
  7. I had to make the same decision between sleeve and bypass. Most studies show that bypass patients loose faster and have great % of excess weight loss at 1 year post-op, but by year three the weight loss is the same for both procedures. The risk of regain is also pretty close for both procedures (although a lot of it is up to you and the choices you make). However, if you do regain weight down the road (which can happen), the options for a revision from a bypass are limited. If you have the sleeve, you can always convert to a bypass or SIPS/modified DS down the road (I think SIPS is going to be the revision of choice in 5 years). I originally was leaning towards the bypass, but my surgeon pushed hard on the sleeve. I took his advise and I don't regret it.
  8. Got good news today I’m scheduled for Bypass on April 25, 21 Years. Starting a New chapter in life. Looking forward to a New Season and Awesome Journey. I’m truly thankful and grateful.

    SLEEVE regret

No regrets here. I am almost 7 years out, and within 20 lbs of goal. I didn't want the lap band because I thought it would cause problems when I ride horses, and I didn't want the malabsorption/maldigestion of bypass (and the idea of loose parts hanging around in there creeped me out!) so I figured the sleeve was best for me. I did have problems with reflux, especially at first, so I tend to stay away from spicy food, acidic food, or tomato-based food. Even then, still would get reflux at night when in bed. UNTIL I discovered the wedge! Started out on a wedge pillow, then because I roll around a lot, I put my whole mattress on a wedge. Then when my mattress needed replacing, I got a mattress with an adjustable base, so I can elevate my upper body as much as I want. From the FIRST NIGHT with the wedge pillow, I have not had any reflux at night! It seems to have even helped with daytime reflux, although I'm not sure why. Just glad it's gone! If you don't want to deal with wedges, try putting the legs at the head of your bed up on blocks.

    SLEEVE regret

I have never regretted the sleeve for a second. From pumping the pain meds, to changing my diet, to stalls. It’s all good. I would only get a revision if I got GERD, and no sign of it 14 months out.

Are you happy with your decision?

I was banded in 2005 and revised to sleeve in 4/2014....So far I have no regrets and No complications. I am 20 pounds down and have been feeling normal since day 3 of coming home from the one night stay at the hospital...We are all different and we will all have different results and different feelings. I really like my Sleeve and its nothing like the band, no throwing up,no stuck food, no fills and unfills, no being too tight at night. Good luck with your journey and decision.

    May bypass group!

Hi LabCop, All the best for your revision surgery hope all go well Michael. Sent from my SM-G920F using the BariatricPal App
  14. I was just wondering if anyone had had success with the sleeve after weighing 400lbs pre-op. I was originally opting for the gastric bypass but my surgeon said my bmi was too high and i am now having the sleeve done. I dont really want to have to have another surgery after the sleeve, so I just want to know if anyone has had success with just the sleeve with a high bmi. thanks
  15. When I had my band (I'm having revision surgery) the stitches just dissolved. Is this not the case with sleeve? X
  16. I know my best friend has looked into both bypass and banding. The best thing with banding is that you keep your insides the same. And once you do bypass, you are done. It can not be reversed. She and her doctor decided to try lap banding first, and if it is not successful, then she can look into bypass. Also, he stressed...that with banding you have to exercise. It is a TOOL...bypass, the weight will come off no matter if you sit on your duff or if you exercise....just some food for thought!
  17. Everyone ends up with a different experience no matter which surgery you choose. I have a friend that is about four years post op, is struggling with anemia and has gained some ( maybe twenty to twenty five pounds) of the weight back. Has trouble with some Desserts with the dumping syndrome, but cheesecake( and some other desserts) are no problem. Some gastric bypass people gain their weight back and some Lap Band gain their weight back. For me, GBP was not an option. I could not get over the rerouting and bypassing of my stomach issue. As far as what you can eat after. That varies, too. Some banders choose a stronger level of restriction or band fill than others and with a strong fill level, it's possible to have difficulty with a larger variety of food. But having the flexibility with the band is something that bypass don't have. Their pouch is formed and that's it. No adjustment is possible. did your surgeon say why he thought GBP was better for you? Many surgeons prefer one procedure over another simply because they do more of them and a few might prefer it as ins. pays more. Or are they doing more Bypass because they keep recommending it? So far, I do not slime, I have had food stuck a couple times in the beginning stage of being banded. Why is it hard getting fills? It takes about a 10 min. appt for my fills and most of that time is talking to the PA about how I'm doing. Yes, losing weight is slower with bands but many GBP patients look wasted and gray in the first six months from the rapid weight loss and the malabsorbtion of nutrients. Both procedures have pros and cons. Keep reading and learning about both procedures and you'll be able to make your decision. There are forums that have more GBP people then banders, this site has mostly banders on it.
  18. Hi there! I have not had my surgery yet, but have lost 40 pounds since June, with the help of my bariatric doctor. I'm finding that many of my clothes are too big. I'm using thrift stores and clearance sales to pick up some work clothes that fit, and I've had some wonderful co-workers give me some clothes in my new size. What I'm not sure about is what to do about my old clothes. I have lost weight before, but have never gotten rid of my bigger sized clothes. Now that I'm planning on having gastric bypass surgery in January, it really seems silly to keep them. I've considered selling them to a cosignment shop where I live to get some credit to purchase smaller sizes. I'm wondering what others who have gone down several sizes have done. Thanks for the input!
  19. Thanks Oregondaisy! I did call my surgeon and I told him everything I read online and he agreed that it was from the pouch swelling and pressing against the diaphragm. Maybe he knows he can't bullshit me because I'm a nurse. At any rate, he said it will just take time to go away =( It's still painful and this is a week and 1 day post fill. I think I might go back on liquids for a couple of days to see if I can drop some pounds and relieve this shoulder pain. Good luck with your upcoming surgery! I plan on saving for a revision somewhere down the road as well.
  20. Well I had my sleeve done on 9/20/12; now I’m awaiting approval from United Healthcare Choice Plus for revision surgery. Why? Severe acid reflux which I never had prior to my sleeve. I’ve also gained back about 55 lbs. I know I just can’t continue waking up w acid coming from my nose any longer. Every day is the same. I try to stay away from trigger foods but that doesn’t stop the reflux issues as I can drink water and have problems now. My hubby is more worried about the revision than I am at this point. I just want to be done w the reflux. I’m going for the cardio test while I await the 15-30 day approval process. I haven’t been on here in a long time...I’m back 😉. Now I’m just looking up videos and trying to soak up all the knowledge while I wait. Fingers crossed for a fast approval.
  21. I have not been banded yet, but my sis had gastrix bypass and I was wondering if you r not allowed to ever suck through a straw again? That was one of the things they told her prior to surgery. I was curious :cry Caramel

    loosing weight too early

Does your insurance cover the sleeve? The sleeve reduces the size of your stomach; however leaves the pylori, so you don't have malabsorption. When I went to my WLS Seminar, the surgeon presented all 3 options - band, sleeve and RNY. He said that if he were in the position of having to have WLS he would definitely go with the sleeve -- it was the "newest bad boy on the block." I have done a lot of reserach and inasmuch as I am self-pay regardless of my decision, I have chosen to go with the sleeve. My surgery date is 6/12/09. If you read the threads on the forum under Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy you can get alot of information ... there are several very knowledgable peoople who have had the sleeve - either virgin sleevers or band to sleeve revision. If you are not 100% sure about which surgery you want, don't proceed until you are. Good luck.
  24. Anyone had this? It is located right by my belly button. Gotten progressively worse all day. No redness, swelling or fever. Doctors office closed....unsure what to do. Feels like a hot knife stabbing. Sorry if tmi. 5 weeks out bypass.

    Hernia

Has anyone developed a hernia their first year post-op? I had a consultation with a plastic surgeon last weekend and when I pointed out a section on my stomach that I thought would need lipo along with my tummy tuck, the surgeon felt it and said, "you know that's a hernia right?" and I said "well no, or I wouldn't have asked you to lipo it out.....lol". When he said he could repair it at the same time as my tummy tuck/thigh lift I explained that I was not planning to have the procedures done until December, he said as long as it was not bothering me, December was fine. The hernia was obviously not the reason I was there, so it didn't really sink in until on the drive home, then I had a hundred questions. So, if you developed one, was it because the intestine that was relocated during bypass is now weaker? What causes them? Did you know you had it? Did you change your daily activities? Did you change your workout routine? Now that I know what it is, it's obvious, so I can't stop thinking about it. Any other information/advice would be helpful - thanks in advance!
