    Surgery Postponed...

Hey All - Well, some of you know that I've been sick since I started the pre-op diet (think that's probably coincidental). Anyway, ended up with bronchitis and a double ear infection this week. Called my surgeon today and they said I need to finish my antibiotics before they can do surgery, so surgery moved from Monday August 3rd to Friday August 7th. Funny thing is that my surgeon is doing a workshop for other doctors that day, so my surgery will be recorded and shown via satellite to other bariatric surgeons. I was fine with that for two reasons 1) they don't show my face and 2) I figure he's gotta be on his "a" game right?? So, bummed that I have to live on liquids for yet another week, but feel better that at least I'll be healthy for surgery. Jen
  4. You all are all so great!! Thanks for all the well wishes. I still have to tell you, it hasn't been easy. I sat at a 10 pound loss after surgery for about 6 weeks!!! I say most of it was just trying to get through the holidays. I do much better in a controlled environment, like my own house. I'm learning to control my eating habits outside the home much better, thanks to the band. I am so impressed the people on this board and how well you all have done. You have been the inspiration.

    preop liquid question

Hi Everyone - I got my surgery date, March 19th. Woo Hoo! I agree with previous posts, the time you are on liquid is determined by your surgeon. I'm on strict liquids for 2 weeks. No sugar, no fat, no fruit. 3 protein shakes a day. Like they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I'm already down 8 pounds pre-op. Good luck all.

    preop liquid question

Well....I've been on the pre-op now for about a week and a half...3 more to go, yup a wholllle month! My Dr. was very specific about how many gms. of carbs and how many gms. of Protein I was to take in with each shake. I've discovered when I'm following things to the T I am COLD....and I never get cold. They say that's a sign of the ketosis thing.... So....I would say it depends. I add powdered strawberry or raspberry which only add about 1 carb to the mix...and being a cooking gal, I measure my stuff to come out to the correct amount of protein/carb #'s the Dr. wants. I count my gms. of each to be within guidelines given by the Dr. I have found that just can't abide mixing with Water...so I count my carbs in the fat free milk, and mix my powder accordingly. Also, by mixing with unsweetened soy milk, it's actually pretty good. So, there ya go....it's not a simple answer because there's not a national standard for this pre-op thing. Just follow the Dr....and try not to be bored with it....(whoops, advice for me in there....AARRRGGHHH) My surgery is the 28th...so we can be bored together...lol. Best of luck!
  7. Thank you all for your comments - she's on her way home to have band removed late this week... My questions is concerning my mom. She was banded by another Dr 1 yr ago and has been having severe problems for about 4 months w/ servere acid reflux and vomiting. She has contacted her Dr several times but is not getting a response. Also, she is in <ST1:p<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comIraq </st1:country-region></ST1:pand can not get home easily to see the doctor. Also, she has only lost about 15 lbs since the surgery. Any help would be greatly appreciated as she is very worried. Thank you in advance for your advice.

    Feeling So Frustrated!

Once I'd made my decision to pursue bariatric surgery I was discouraged with the series of doctor appointments, lab tests, psych evals and support group meetings that I perceived as obstacles to my goal. I made an excel spread sheet of all my appointments which turned out to be three pages long by my surgery date. However, after a short period of time I realized the benefits all these "hoops" provided. I was 50 years old and had a tip-to-tail physical, all on the dime of my insurance company. I had time to learn about nutrition and to educate the people in my life what I was about to undertake. I talked extensively with friends who had undergone gastric bypass and lap bands over the last 7 years and found that I was given an opportunity to be more involved with my path to health then they ever were. Many tell me that they regret NOT having the "prep" time that was required of me. I took charge of my health and lost 50 lbs on my own prior to surgery which reinforced, for me, that the sleeve is a TOOL . . . it is not a miracle or magic wand to slimness, but simply a tool that will help me maintain my weightloss once I reach my goal. I still have to put in the "work" with or without the sleeve. I have absolutely no regrets having the sleeve surgery (2 months ago) and am truly grateful that I had to journey past all the challenges and obstacles along the way.
  10. Been there too. Just drink liquids to keep hydrated & take vitamins. Make sure you get LOTS of rest. If you can, try to get protein drinks down. Mine lasted over a week. All kinds of germs going around, especially with the crazy weather, never mind people travelling to & from different countries. I think bed rest is best. Good luck.

    Not Enough Calories

I just met with my nutritionist about a week ago, and she told me that I might be too low. I'm getting 900-1000 calories a day, and she said I should be at around 1200. I've been losing okay, so I'm not too worried about it right now, but if I go into a stall, I'll need to bump it up some.

    Whole new experience shopping!

Great job!!! I remember my first shopping trip after I could no longer fit in any of my clothes. It is such a wonderful feeling. At the beginning of the summer I bought a couple nice pairs of capris, size 14 and tops size large. I work part time in retail so I had to have a couple decent outfits and I figured they would get me through the summer. Within a couple weeks, my new clothes were falling off of me. I tried on some clothes at work and was thrilled to fit in a size 10 bottom and medium top. I now fit in a size 9 bottom and medium top in juniors. I even bought a skirt yesterday that was a 7 Keep up the great work and thank you for the motivating post!!!

    Emotional eating after surgery

I'm also a stress eater and am very stressed right now due to my mom being really ill. I am about 10 weeks out and I've done really well sticking to my food plan, except for this last week. It's been pretty easy because my hunger is 80% gone. I ate a whole pint of frozen chocolate yogurt one day, and then couple days later I ate WAY too many miniature candies a co-worker keeps stocked at his desk for whoever needs chocolate. I know I will always have to fight my urge to eat when I'm stressed, but the thing that makes it a lot easier is I'm not also always fighting hunger pains as well, so I feel it's much easier to control. It's also a lot easier to get back on track! :-)

    Fresh Strawberries

I am wondering if it is ok to eat fresh strawberries out of the strawberrie patch on Mothers Day? I am on my 3rd week since getting banded. Just wanted to see if it was something I could enjoy on Mothers day. Thanks for your help. Hassie

    Surgery is Scheduled

I went to Cincinnati this week to meet with Dr. Curry. I had a very good visit and felt that everyone treated me with respect. Since I am self-pay, I am off to the races. I go back in a few weeks to meet with the dietitian and get an EKG, I think that's the next part, lol. I almost fainted when I saw my weight on the scale. It reassured me and my boyfriend AND my sister that this is the right decision for me. It is going to be expensive but I have paid thousands of dollars for Curves, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, etc. My surgery is scheduled for July 7th.....yikes! Has anyone had the "one incision" procedure. It is now available with Dr. Curry but it costs $1,000 more than the 4-5 incision surgery. Worth it?
  16. Hi Melissa, I am in Charlotte and have BCBS of NC. Dr. Gersin will be my surgeon. According to the BCBS of NC policy for gastric surgery, it is one of their requirements although the surgeon would probably want the information even if it was not required. The good news for us is that the insurance person in Dr. Gersin's office said that once all the tests are done and everything is submitted for approval that BCBS of NC is very good about approving within 3 to 5 days, but I have read onhere that for some it only took 1 day!! I think I am a week from submitting my information and I'm getting pretty excited. Good luck with your journey in Raleigh! Suzanne

    Delayed Bandster Hell? Argh!

So literally a WEEK after I see my surgeon for post op appt. #2, and being praised to high heaven for having lost over 30 pounds so far and still having no fill, suddenly this last week I have been eating way more, getting hungry way faster, and have gained like FIVE pounds. WTF? Is it common for the need for a fill to come on so fast? And did any of you gain some weight before you got your first fill? Or your second or whatever fill your on? I have no issue with getting a fill, I want to use this device as it was intended...I'm just disappointed that I sort of felt suddenly out of control this week when I was doing SO good. I've been a faithful 3-4 time a week exerciser, so the fact that I could put on five pounds this week is really disappointing. I know I can lose it again, but I was feeling so "ahead of the game," you know? I will be calling first thing on Monday to make an appointment to get my first fill. Do you think I'm just experiencing a delayed bandster hell since I never experienced one yet? I don't know...just need some support I guess to make me feel better!:cool:

    10 days out and scared

im 2.5 weeks in and let me tell you I was scared too the very day I got the surgery, but it was just jitters and fear of the unknown. Sometimes I have to be talked off of the ledge too. So I understand. I can only speak from my experience. The band is reversable so even if by chance it doesnt work you can have it removed. I have ate too much but I didnt feel sick to my stomach or anything, maybe I didnt overeat too much. I just felt thanksgiving full and my left side starts to ache a bit. Then 10 min later it goes away and I just feel full. I'm a huge Water gulper. I've learned to take sips and not to chug a lug. You can too! But i accidentally chugged hard and not much happened. Just a cold feeling in my gut and I burped a few times. I was not a huge eater before, but now I'm hardly ever hungry. I know others that have been banded and are starving before their fills. My fill is on 09/27. I dont feel deprived at all.
  22. I'm scheduled for the end of next week for the band and I am scared to death. I just have this huge fear that i will wake up with the band and be hugely unhappy - I've ruined my life and I can't go back. Has anyone else had this fear? I'm sure intellectually that this is the right thing to do, and reading people's stories I know that it won't be that bad - but it still doesn't stop me from waking up in the middle of the night in a panic. I've got mixed feelings where my emotion wants to cancel but my mind wants to move forward. Can anyone tell me - I've read that "overeating" is very uncomfortable for those banded - but no one has said what that means - nausea - heart attack like chest pain - vomiting - etc. I don't fear so much overeating as forgetting myself for a moment on a hot day and starting to gulp Water or whatever. I'm today easily able to down a glass or two in one action. Heck I fear being thirsty. What about hunger? Does the band make you feel deprived - or simply satiated on much less? i'm on the fifth day of the liquid diet pre-op. I have to say the first 2-3 days were terrible (caffeine withdrawal?) - but now I feel much better - this almost seems normal. I've actually skipped some of the meals or Snacks because I haven't needed them. (pre bed snack of 6 oz yogurt I haven't needed the last two days.- and morning snack of sugar free pudding) While the Protein Shakes are awful, I found one that isn't so bad. I only wish my doctor gave me a meal plan with a little variety. Its the same thing everyday. Thanks for listening

    T minus 2 weeks

Today is two weeks from my surgery date. This lap band journey started only two weeks ago, but my weight loss struggle (ok, journey) started over 20 years ago. There is a range of emotions and thoughts going through me now as I strive to mentally prepare myself for this major life change. The surgery is just a moment in time, an event like a wedding. You work and work and prepare and plan, but it's over before you know it. What's left is you and your new husband and the road ahead. Although you know others who are married, you never know what its really like, how challenging it really is until you have your first major fight or have to make a major adjustment to your routine or way of doing something you've always done in order to accomate your husbands' needs. I know my life is about to change in a major way. As I sat in the park last night eating a fried pupusa and drinking a chocolate rice drink, I think to myself that this won't be possible again after the surgery. It's bittersweet. Intellecutally I know it's the experience of being in the park with my husband that is the most important and not the food, but something inside also feels sad. I mourn for the loss of this life that has brought misery yet strange comfort so many times and celebrate what is to come.

    Merry Christmas from Aruba

How'd we ever get out of such a wonderful habit? The last 10 years my two sons were living at home we left the day after Christmas and spent a week in the Islands, then along came grandkids and no more Christmas trips. Hmmmm, maybe it was really due to my weight and the grandkids were just a good excuse, time to get back into that old tradition.

    Weight Watchers??

Well, I'm frustrated to say that I've only lost 6 pounds since November. Up until now the band really has done all the work for me and I've been losing steadily getting to -50 with very little effort... But now that I'm at reasonable restriction (yes, I could probably be a little tighter, but I'm pretty tight) I decided to rejoin Weight Watchers and see if that helps. WAKEUP CALL!!! OMG I had no idea I've been eating this badly!!!!! I had a 50 point day over the weekend with absolutely no effort at all. I'm hoping that having a few weeks of conscious eating will get me back in the groove where I don't have to try as hard again, because I badly don't want to be on Weight Watchers. What do you long-termers do? Does the band do enough of the work for you where you don't need WW? Or are other people doing diets of one sort or another? How hard to you have to "try" to lose or keep the weight off? Thanks for any advice.
