Starting new journey what was your timeline

My insurance (Highmark Blue-shield, I am in Pennsylvania) has no program specific requirements for education/classes or pre-op weight-loss requirement. My program put me on a 3 month schedule - the shortest duration they offer… because of getting pre-op clearances. I had the intro meeting plus three classes where we went over their program material & requirements. My first intro class was May 16th. Classes were spaced about every two weeks. I had two in June and a final appointment and weigh in on July 7th (my program required I not gain weight after my initial weigh-in). I managed to get all my pre-op testing in fairly quickly, but it was not all reviewed and signed off on by the July 7th class, so I had to wait a few more days to schedule to meet the surgeon. First available appointment to meet the surgeon was July 21st. She scheduled me for her first available surgery for August 16th, 2022. So my whole program from first appointment to surgery will be exactly 3 months … that is not typical from what I understand. Most of the people in my intro class were on 6 month schedules or longer, which was dictated by their insurance.
  2. Just an accountability check in/update. I’m so thankful I didn’t chicken out of this surgery. I’m 3.5 weeks post-op, still in the puréed food phase and down 26 lbs. the puréed stage hasn’t been that difficult as I’ve gotten creative with my options. I’m still drinking a couple of protein shakes as I can’t really eat more than a 3-4 “bites” before I’m stuffed. I am struggling to get all my water in daily. I seem to top out at 32 ounces, not including at least a small bottle of Gatorade zero and the 12 oz of 1% milk for my shakes. I started adding a collagen supplement and that stuff smells horrible. 🤢 All in all, everything is going smoothly thus far. 😁

    Stalls - How many

I lost rapidly during the first two months and then stalled for 3+ weeks during month three, even though I was following the program well. It drove me crazy! When the stall ended, I lost 8 pounds in two weeks. I've resumed losing at a pretty good rate since then.

    Mahi mahi post op?

Hey guys im a little more than three weeks post-op VSG and my 2-4 week post-op diet plan soft foods, including different types of fish (salmon trout, halibut, flounder etc.). But they never specified whether mahi mahi was ok to have so im just curious if anybody has advice as to whether it's flaky enough or too tough to to have at this point. And if so fill me in on some delicious recipes [emoji39] never knew fish tasted so good until now! So mahi mahi is new to me Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I’m in CT. I have BCBS as well. They approved my surgery with no problems. I had to have a drug screen, do three nutritionist visits and pass a psych evaluation. I have sleep apnea and high blood pressure as co morbidities as well. Hopefully you will have a similar result!
  6. I also have BCBS. I contacted them to make sure that the hospital and procedure were covered and they were. I went through the six month process and all the testing and I was approved by the hospital and given a surgery date. Right before the two week pre-op diet started, I was told BCBS would not accept my claim. It turns out the hospital was not a "Blue Distinction Center" and so they could not approve bariatric surgery there. Only Blue Distinction Centers can do bariatric surgeries. I wish they had explained it to me to begin with! I went to a different hospital (only one of two Blue Distinction Centers in the state of NM) and I have just finished their three month program and I am waiting to see if my claim is accepted. Wish me luck!!

    July 2022 peeps!

Keep telling yourself! I know it’s the hardest thing but if you can stay off the scale it might help. I find it so hard not to be jumping on every 5 minutes but when I stay off for a week I am so much more healthy mentally! I lost 4lb on pre-op diet but I was not full liquids - mine was low carb diet, only stopped eating actual food at 6pm day prior to surgery. My surgeon sent me home with a photo of my healthy liver (kinda weird seeing your own insides) so I guess I did something right. I don’t know how much I’ve lost since but I’ll hop on the scale tomorrow as I have a post op appointment. When is your surgery? Three days’ time? Best of luck with it! cay
  8. This is really true. It depends the food, what surgery you had, how it was done, how tight your esophagus is etc. I find that I can eat one serving of most foods at a time too. Usually like 1 egg and I feel full. I can however resume eating within 1-2 hours pretty easily but you have to be careful not to eat too much throughout the whole day if you need to take a break in the middle of your meal. Sometimes I need a break after two bites because it feels so tight in my throat. But yeah then there are foods I can eat more of like salad, cheese, and bread. I can also eat more than the recommended serving size of chips or crackers but that tends to make me very nauseous so I avoid it. Pureed foods like refried beans, light soups, and yogurt I can eat in large amounts but again I don't because it makes me nauseous. For example today, I had a protein shake for breakfast and felt fine for 4 hours. Then made lunch as i started feeling low energy. made a sandwich for lunch with some protein chips. I use low calorie low carb small slices of bread (45 calorie slice) 45 calorie slice of cheese and 40 calories worth of plant based lunch meat. I got through a bit over half of the sandwich and three chips from a 160 calorie serving bag. Won't finish it, feel satisfied and know if I went back for more I'd start feeling nauseous. 9. are you taking iron? That can also cause black stools. like others have said, you're still healing, so that might be all this is. If the stoma remains too tight (known as a stricture), that's an easy fix - they can stretch it out during an upper endoscopy. I had that done twice (strictures, when they occur, are almost always 1-3 months post-op - they're very rare once you're three months out)
  10. Three weeks out, you are still healing. Go to your GP, address your concerns. He should be able to tell you if something is going on above and beyond normal healing. Let him in on your symptoms AND your concerns. If he is good at his job, he will address any problems he sees with you, and/or tell you to wait a little longer. That said, I assume the overseas doc is sharing his files with someone on this side of the "pond."

    Hmmmm

I believe with bypass you tend to lose more quickly at the beginning but then it slows to a similar rate to sleeve. But people tend to lose more slowly after a revision. I guess because you’ve already had one change with your sleeve & the bypass just changes a bit more. While our new set points will determine a lot of our final weight (where our bodies are happiest & equalises at), you still have to be willing to be dedicated & committed to the program which you learnt after your first experience. The stats say the average weight loss at the three year mark is about 65%+/- of the weight you have to lose with either sleeve or bypass. This takes into consideration the bounce back regain some experience, complacency & changes to your diet to best complement your life, etc. Don’t know what the stats are for revision surgery. Do some lose more than the average stats? Yes. At my lowest I had lost 138% of the weight I had to lose with my sleeve. At three years out now, I weigh a couple of kilos more so am at 129%. I am very careful with my food intake, portions, etc. but I think this is also about the weight my body is happiest at. You’ll lose weight all over your body. You can’t spot lose fat or chose where your body burns fat. It may seem you’re losing weight from certain areas more slowly but it’s usually where you held the most concentration of fat. If you carried a lot of weight on your legs or tummy they might be the slowest place for you to notice loss. All the best.

    1 month post op

most of us experience our first major stall within the first month or so after surgery. We call it the "three week stall" since it's often the third week post-op, but not always. Mine was weeks 2 and 3. And no, your body isn't done. I'd lost about 10 lbs by the time I hit my first stall, and I ended up 20 months later down over 200 lbs. if you stick to your plan, the stall will break and you'll be on your way again. If it's getting to your head too much, then stay off the scale for a few days. The stall typically lasts 1-3 weeks.

    Mini-cheat 5 days post op

It's not the end of the world but take it seriously - if you couldn't follow the rules by day 5, what's going to happen by day 50? Or 500? After I was sleeved in 2016 I did extremely well at first, I followed the plan to a T, I never cheated, and I dropped 120 lbs in about 6 months or so. Then I figured I could splurge a little here and there, have a few bites of a snack, because what's the big deal, right? It ended up turning into a vicious cycle where I ate more and more crap and eventually I regained almost all of the weight I had lost and was absolutely miserable and depressed and feeling like a complete and utter failure. I got the revision to bypass in Nov 2021 and am down nearly 100 pounds, following the rules and doing everything I'm supposed to, and always keeping in mind what happened last time. Don't beat yourself up too bad but if you feel guilty - GOOD! Use that and remember it when you have cravings in the future. Remember this isn't a magic bullet, it's a tool, and it's up to you how you use it. You haven't failed because of one mistake, but you might fail if you let it become two mistakes, then three, and so on.

    Surgery postponed

Did you follow the pre op liquid diet properly? Some surgeons only want three or four days, but most want two weeks to ensure the liquid diet. it is designed to shrink the liver for surgery and very important it is followed. If you cheat on it, it is a sign you are not a good candidate for surgery.
  15. I had RNY in 1990 and regained all I lost. I always blamed myself but now know that the surgery failed due to a fistula between pouch and stomach. I didn't know that revision was even possible until 2020, just before the pandemic struck. I started the bariatric program in early 2021. I discovered that I am a food addict with trigger foods: sugar, wheat flour, rice, white potatoes, and processed food. I cut out those foods and the result was fantastic! I lost 70 lbs prior to surgery. Despite this success, I went ahead with laparoscopic revision surgery on 12/21/21 at age 73. I weighed 247 at the time of surgery, down from 317. Unfortunately, I fell in that very tiny group of bariatric surgical patients that develop serious complications. Ten days after my revision surgery, I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis, caused by a rupture of the jejunum below the anastomosis. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks and underwent three endoscopic procedures and two open surgeries before they finally found and corrected a residual abscess. I left the hospital with a 15-cm long open surgical wound, which took 8 more weeks to fully close. I am now fully recovered and am back to exercising daily. The endoscopic procedures stretched the new anastomosis so I have no more restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I still have to be very careful about what I consume. I typically go through month-long stalls and then drop a few pounds. I do lose inches during the stalls. I've dropped from size 32/4X to size 20/XL and now weigh 214 lbs., just past the 100 lb loss mark. After being on a restricted diet for over 16 months I struggle with near-irresistible cravings in the afternoon and evenings. The clinic wants me to limit intake to 800 calories. 😱 It is daunting because I know I will never be able to go on a "maintenance" diet and must continue to avoid my trigger foods forever. Even when I choose protein snacks in response to cravings, each snack adds 100 or more calories to the daily total so my daily calorie count is between 900-1200 calories. (I will gain weight at 1500 calories.) I've done a trial of weight loss drug CONTRAVE but had to discontinue due to side effects. This is a horror story, but don't let it dissuade you from your revision. Complications are extremely rare.

    2nd Day Post Op

You just had pretty major surgery lots of things will be a struggle for the first week or so & then while you are healing. It’s not uncommon for people to struggle to get in their protein & water in to begin. Honestly the first three days I wouldn’t have drunk more than a cup of broth total. But as long as you’re making an effort & there is a steady improvement you’ll be ok. And yes, warm drinks are often more soothing & easier to tolerate than cold. Don’t be afraid to use hot water or microwave your shake. I did it with my chocolate one every day. (Some powdered proteins don’t mix well in hot water so heat those after you mix them.) I swear I still can feel cold drinks as they pass all the way down from my mouth to my tummy which will then clench. I spread my meds out across the day too. Not an issue. Helped with some of the nausea from the vitamins too. It does better & easier just give yourself time to heal.
  17. Three years ago I was revised from VSG to RNY for GERD. I’m very pleased that I am still GERD free and no new problems (let’s hope it stays that way) Everything feels very normal now and I can barely feel any major difference from VSG let alone life prior to WLS. I know it’s different but I’ve settled in. I moved early 2021 so I’m establishing care with a new bariatric practice for continued yearly monitoring/testing. I don’t see a lot of revision postings by anyone as far out as I am, so if anyone is out there please let all know how it’s going and if anyone has questions feel free to ask ❤️

    July 2022 peeps!

PO day 2 for me today. I’ve had a terrible headache since last evening but pretty sure it’s the lack of calories (I am on clear liquids today, to full liquids tomorrow) - yesterday I slept on and off all day on the recliner and the recliner is definitely more comfortable than the bed. My goal for these three days is 30oz of water/clear liquids and I managed about 35oz yesterday. I was having a lot of trouble deep breathing without pain so I’m hugging a pillow and trying to cough several times a day. It’s definitely helping. My JP drain is the most uncomfortable but it isn’t really painful. Looking forward to that being taken out next week for sure. Trying to see if I can manage with only Tylenol today because I think the painkillers might be sending me a bit loopy. hope everyone post op is recovering well. cay

What do YOU order at Starbucks?

For any fellow pre-sleevers, there are two or three teas that Starbucks has, that are zero (0) calories, just add stevia. I personally get the passion tango tea, with stevia. Definitely something to quench my thirst, tastes great, and I can drink it during my pre-op diet phase.

    August Surgery Buddies!

I’m August 1st as well! I start my liver shrinking diet on the 22nd. I only have to do three days of liquids thank goodness. It is soooo exciting!!!

    August Surgery Buddies!

Two days before me! My liquid is only three days - two liquid, one clear liquid (day before surgery). They have me on semi-solids for five days before that and a low-cal/carb diet from the 20-25th. I almost wish it was just liquid - it would make me have to think less. I wish I could fast forward to my date so I wouldn't have to do these next two weeks! But, it will all be worthwhile. Are you in the states? Are you staying in the states or going abroad for surgery? Mine is in Tijuana.

    August Surgery Buddies!

That's fantastic that your brain is already making those switches for you. I know personally, I need time to make adjustments from old habits. I have been using the "Fabulous" App to help me make those changes gradually. My prep diet is seriously helping me focus and take the brain work out of it. I don't even want to think about what I'm going to do/eat after surgery - I just want it all planned out with various choices of what I can have already made. I vape about three puffs of cannabis at night to help me sleep. My surgeon didn't want me on NSAIDS any longer and he was totally and completely supportive of the cannabis. It really helps without any sleepy hangover in the morning.

    Day 28

Hi all, For me these posts help keep me in check on a few things. Everything is going well and my nutritionist has released me to more foods. On Monday I added baked and grilled fish, soft veggies, fruit etc. He still doesn’t want me to set my macros until next month but once me to get 100-120 gr of protein, and up my carbs a bit. So, I’ve added berries and banana. My weight loss has slowed down, but with adding foods and so much water loss I’m not surprised. Plus of course, you hear about the three week stall. With the added food, I certainly have more energy. Now, I need to add cardio. The weights have been going well and I’m getting stronger Pre Surgery Weight: 336 Surgery Weight: 330 4 week Weight: 305.6. Goal weight: 275 Note: I was having some light headed issues, especially when getting up. It was my blood pressure dropping. I’m now down to 1/2 a pill per day. I am hoping with more weight loss I’ll be off completely. Good luck everyone.
  24. On 2/15/22 I underwent revision from VSG to RNY due to hiatal hernia and reflux issues. My surgery weight was around 230 lbs, actually a few less due to three days of liquid diet. In the 5 months since revision surgery I've lost about 40 lbs, but have been at a steady weight for over five weeks. I'm currently around 15 to 20 lbs away from my final goal. I had a post surgery follow up with the surgeons office and they just suggested I try to stay closer to the dietary guidelines. I probably was a little short on protein but in the couple weeks since have worked diligently to increase protein and reduce carbs. Yet the scale hasn't moved. Looking for experiences from others who had revision without a large amount of weight to lose. How did it go for you? Is this just a stall or my new normal? Should I expect to continue to lose, or am I pretty much at my new set point after five months?

    July 2022 peeps!

I was in the hospital one night. Once you do your dye test to make sure there's no leaks in your stomach, they should start giving you water and if you hold it down for three hours, you should be discharged I went in on 7/5 at about 7am, and left the next day at 12:30 pm.
