I'm thinking about bypass surgery but one thing I am concerned with is what to tell people. I am probably a typical male, I don't want to tell anyone. I don't even want to tell my 22-year-old kids. My wife has convinced me to tell them (and the rest of my family) but honestly, I don't want to discuss it with other friends or co-workers. Last year I lost 65 lbs (gained half back) and from that experience, people are really nosey. "Tell me what you are doing", "Are you OK", "Are you sick"? I mean seriously if I was sick like that do you think I would want talk about it? How do others handle that? Some people are right up front which is fine. How do those of you that are a little more reserved handle questions? Ed

Just curious -- Has Anyone Been Denied by Ins. for Losing Too Much Pre-Surgery?
breprih replied to FluffyChix's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was banded in 09 but am having problems with it so I'm looking at the sleeve revision. I was losing before my initial appt but now my BMI is too low. So I have to weigh more at my next appt before insurance submittal. I plan to lift weights and build muscle before surgery and eat good things but as much as I want to try and maintain where I am at. That is of course unless the Dr. says losing after approval is OK. -
pre op appt and jerk of a doctor
betty_s replied to betty_s's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
awesome! Maya is who I met with initially and went over the band with! Glad to hear you like him! I'm looking forward to working with him. Dr. Carmody is my doctor too. I switched to him when I found out my original dr. hadn't sewn my port down completely. Dr. C did my port revision and his NP does my fills. Her name is Maya Paige...she is wonderful! Good luck with your upcoming surgery!! -

Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
allielee replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm disappointed that there is only one response here. I have a band (slipped), and would love to know whether the sleeve or bypass would be better or has worked better and why. Once you leave the land of the Banded, you really only have a few choices. And they're not reversible, anymore input would be awesome ???? I was a successful bander until it eroded .. Last year I revised to bypass . Sleeve wasn't even an option for me. Reason being I wasn't going to have "another wls surgery again" I wanted this to be the last one and my doctor said the sleeve is sometimes the first step to bypass.. I wanted the gold standard.. It's so much easier than the band was and I am wayyy healthier now than I was then. I can eat chicken and veggies no problem!!!!! -
Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
Debbieduck4 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose the sleeve because: *I didn't want my guts rearranged (bypass) or a foreign object inside me forever (band) *I didn't want dumping... I wanted to be able to have a normal life where you have birthday cake once in awhile. *I liked the idea of the Grehlin reduction because I was always ravenous before *I didn't want to worry about Vitamin deficiencies/malabsorption that some people get with other surgeries *My surgeon thought it was the appropriate choice for me And I feel like it was a great decision!! -
Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
VSGAnn2014 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose the sleeve because: * I was put off by what I had read online and heard from my surgeon re lap band complications and unpleasantness. * I didn't want gastric bypass's lifelong effects of nutrient malabsorption, complex Vitamin supplements, and dumping syndrome. I was also put off by the re-routing aspect of bypass. * I had "only" 85 pounds to lose. * I liked the idea of the sleeve's assist with lifelong restriction. (I now understand that I must always eat Protein first, avoid sliders, not drink with meals, and not graze to enable that restriction). * I was terrifically excited by the sleeve's reduction of ghrelin. (I now understand that the no-ghrelin effect may not continue as strongly long-term as it was immediately post-op; we shall see.) -
Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?

I based my decision on revision rate. I decided that if I had to undergo surgery, I only wanted to do it once. Not repeat it with a revision on a revision on another revision. -
Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
Mommabird replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose to have a RNY Gastric Bypass because of my Diabetes. In November 2013, I had a bout of pancreatitis, that is terologistnow believed to have been caused by one of my Diabetes medications. In December2013, at an appointment with my endocrinologist, he told me that my chronic diarrhea was being caused by my other Diabetes medication. That was when gastric bypass surgery was first mentioned to me. A week later, my gastroenterologist also mentioned it to me as a solution to some of my medical problems. I had my RNY on December 10, 2014 and am off both of my Diabetes medications. My fasting blood sugars now run in the low 70s. -

Revision Band to Bypass
Bariover54 replied to Jim1967's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I had my lap band put in 2007 and I’m getting it taken out on February 6th along with bypass surgery. I never really lost weight with the band, always stating around my original 220 range. This past year I put on over 30 pounds, I’m sure because of inactivity ( the heat living in South Florida last summer) and new pain medicine, Gabapentin. I don’t have any advice, but I do wish you well and best of luck. -

Would you get lap band?
Cocoabean replied to annanyc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only question going through my mind is, with all the exercise you do, what is your caloric intake? I am asking this rhetorically. You seem very in tune with your diet. So, if you are looking for help with portion control, this will help. Unless you are bound and determined to "eat around the band." Please don't think of it as easily removeable when you are done. That is not what it was designed to do. Upon removal there is usally scar tissue involved, and the stomach will not return to its original state. This IS a major surgery. It is touted as mimimally invasive, but it has the same number of cuts to your body as gastric bypass, plus one for the port. They don't cut your stomach or reroute your intestines, but poking five holes, pumping air inside you, moving your liver out of the way, and leaving an access port under your skin is pretty darned invasive. Living a banded life is not always easy. food gets stuck. Small portions can cause questions if you choose to keep your band a private matter. My surgeon told me no anti-inflammatories long-term. I am now having big problems with arthritis in my neck causing nerve damage in my arm and hand. I can't take the drugs to bring down the inflammation. I can take pain killers, they help, they don't fix it. I don't say these things to change your mind. I'd have given it serious consideration at a BMI of 30, most likely. Because at 30, I was on my way to 36, and at 36, I was on my way to 40. Only you know your habits and where you are heading in the future. I just want to give a perspective of someone who has been banded for a while. I wish you all the best in your personal journey! -
Tips for getting into the revision mindset
kcuster83 replied to ryan_86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
At my initial appointment with the surgeon I was 100% sleeve ready. We discussed my health, history, medications and personal goals. During which my severe GERD obviously came up. I was on 2 prescriptions and still always had TUMS on had. It was miserable and NOT controlled by the meds. This was a big concern for him (my surgeon) as sleeve patients already have a higher risk of developing GERD or is worsening. There was NO way I could deal with it getting worse. Honestly, I don't even know how it could. I was up a night vomiting fire, so bad my voice would be hoarse for the next few days. With that and the amount of weight I am aiming to loose he highly recommended bypass. I was scared, (to me) this was much more of a surgery. More risks, the whole vitamin thing.. etc. He said it was totally my choice, he would do either surgery but that was his recommendation. He provided some additional information and told me to think about it and next time we talk I could let him know. I read, and read, and read everything. Weighing the pros and cons. I decided that the GERD part alone was enough to make me move forward with bypass. Right away I stopped 1 of my GERD meds, I had to stay on the other one as directed by the surgeon to help heal and reduce the risk of ulcers. No issues with stopping 1 and didn't need TUMS. One the surgeon allowed me to stop the second medication (2 months post-op) I did. And still ALL GOOD! I am off all medications and have had NO sign of any acid reflux related problems! NO REGRETS! I don't know how to get you into the mindset, do research. Looking forward to the relief of GERD alone would get me there. -
Tips for getting into the revision mindset
Tomo replied to ryan_86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
First I asked about getting the MGB before I got my revision to RNY for gerd, I was told that there are recent studies that MGB is linked to bile reflux. Because I was in the minority groups of VSG that got severe reflux (I think it's 15-20% of VSG), there is no way I was going to risk getting bile reflux. Also, my surgeon cautioned me against the MGB and told me to go RNY to help with my gerd. So, I was apprehensive like everyone else. I just suffered so bad and so long from gerd, I was actually looking forward to sleeping and no fake gnawing feelings of hunger that gerd gave me, or burning throat all day long... Etc. So 15 months since my revision, and no severe gerd. I also do not have any side effects like dumping, fluctuance, and am getting great post-op blood tests. I am feeling so normal (pre WLS op normal) but the only difference is I eat very little comparatively speaking. It has been an incredibly smooth ride. -
Hello. Just registered today...
linkoop replied to Ziva's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi! I also just registered for this site today. I went to a support group and all but one person had gastric bypass, so am still investigating on my own. How many pounds do you want to drop? I want to lose 90. -
I was self pay for my revision....so my price was more than the typical VSG.....but Dr. Yu has self pay packages as well, his office is very helpful in telling you up front what you will be responsible for before surgery....

I have quite a bit of medication I take daily. At what point after surgery could you take medication? Did they need to be crushed or chewed? I don't get to talk to the pharmacist until final approval. Cross-posted. I meant to write this in the bypass forum. Oops.

May surgery and surgeon has me second guessing the sleeve
Christina.Rose replied to AntoinetteNY's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maybe he does not like doing sleeves or is more comfortable with doing bypasses?? You really need to make sure you get the best surgeon for what YOU need. Good luck!
