Lap band vs VSG for 37 BMI

Hi there! You will be hard pressed to find a reputable surgical team that will suggest lapbands anymore (It was not even an option at my practice only revision surgery from lapband to something else was offered) As for the type of surgery you choose, I would suggest a frank conversation with your team regarding your specific realistic likely outcome & about all the factors that will influence this (that they have seen such as age, genetics, race, medical issues, gender, etc) and ask a ton of questions including revision/recidivism rates for the surgeries they offer (no one really wants 2 surgeries when 1 will do), longest term success rates, most/least complications, most managable post op lifestyle, GERD & hair loss, etc then go with the best option for you. Good luck
  3. I had Roux NY gastric bypass on February 4th and I’m 55 . So far I haven’t had any complications and I’ve lost 60 lbs. I had a hiatal hernia repaired as well and my acid reflux ( With Barrett’s esophagus) ALL GONE.. unfortunately, I feel like I could ( and felt for a while) load up my pouch WAY more and do it comfortably.. I asked my surgeon if she was sure she operated!!! I haven’t cheated ... trying to get all my water and protein and I’m determined to change my life and I have had success, I just thought I’d feel more restricted... my fear of failure kept me up last night.. a weigh in today and visit with my surgeon.. had to leave my therapist and am on the hunt for one who specializes in eating disorders and weight loss. I’m doing everything right but the fear of failure is palpable.

I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

I'm going to be 58 in July and I'm revising to the bypass due to acid reflux and a hiatal hernia from the sleeve it will be 3 years in June. Sent from my SM-J337P using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I have Anthem BCBS and agree with notmyname. I just had gastric bypass 8 weeks ago, and Anthem approved without any input from my PCP. I filled out lots of paperwork for my surgeon which included my own list of how many times I tried to lose weight on my own, and failed. Presumably my surgeon submitted tht info to Anthem. But again, i did Not need anything from PCP. Good luck, and don't give up! I'm rooting for you! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No requirements????

I’m revising from sleeve to SIPS and was told by my doctor that I need 6 months medically supervised diet psych evaluation and all the other fun stuff. I called my insurance today and they told me there’s no requirement except I have to go through a different dept. which basically guides you through and make sure you are ready for surgery. I’ve had WLS twice. From band to sleeve and I’ve never heard this before. I have UHC. Has anyone else ever been told that??

I have a "would you rather' question

I'm on both sides lol I had VSG, almost no restriction felt on most foods and dump more than most bypassers I've encountered, mostly from random things including proteins but not pastry 😳 & still lost very slowly.I've decided to work with the hand I was dealt, not against it. You can find your sweet spot and accomplish great things. And the grass is always greener where you water it Good luck 💜
  9. “Was the bypass harder to get used to? I also am revising from the sleeve because of a hiatal hernia and terrible acid reflux.“ That is the reason I got it done. And also as my sleeve was not stopping food quantities, but mostly because of the hernia/reflux issue. Bit early to say how it is going. I am only just over a week out of surgery and still on liquid/mushies. Since I went on the pre-operation diet, I’ve lost over 6 kgs (about 13.5 lbs). I guess I won’t know until I can start eating normal food. Trying to keep the protein up at the moment of course.

Yah year out as of may 16

That's amazing amt of weight loss in 1 year. You ROCK!!! I am absolutely hoping to see great results from my RNY REVISION SURGERY.. Allie in SC Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Would you rather be able to tolerate EVERYTHING, like almost feel normal. No nausea, no dumping, no food stuck, no intolerance if it meant losing more slowly and having to be more vigilant or would you rather have things make you sick, feel a lot of restriction, no appetite but lose very fast and not have to make an effort to "diet"? I'm asking because I almost feel like I didnt have the bypass. I feel so normal! I really have to constantly try not to overeat or eat the wrong foods because nothing makes me sick. I am so envious of people who say they have to set an alarm to eat or people who lost 100 pounds in the first 4 months. I feel cheated that my bypass has been so underwhelming. OK Yes I have lost weight and for that I am grateful but mind you, I'm still in the honeymoon period and once thats over am I back to square one with weight loss struggles?? I dont know. Anyway I'd love to know if the grass is greener on the other side...

    1) Because a revision to another method might indeed be helpful. 2) Because sometimes people need a second chance to get things right.

  14. An endocrinologist, particularly one familiar with bypass patients, would not be a bad idea to get a handle on things; this far out, he has gotten used to things and there may have been a slow decline in levels, or some other physiological activity may be going on. A minor bleed is possible (presumably no obvious signs like bloody or dark, tar like stool) as that is something of a characteristic of the bypass - the anastomosis between the pouch and intestines is somewhat delicate and can be irritated by its acidic environment. Pain relievers can be a red flag as NSAIDs are a big no-no with the bypass, but sometimes they can sneak into some pain relief products without being aware of it, and that can cause a bleed.
  15. It might be, but probably not. Presumably, the doc has prescribed omeprazole, or similar PPI medication for it. The sleeve is predisposed toward reflux problems as the stomach volume is reduced much more than the acid producing capacity, and it takes a while for the body to adjust (doesn't mean that one will have that problem, just that the odds are higher than the general population, in comparison, the bypass is predisposed toward marginal ulcers, dumping and reactive hypoglycemia, so there are potential problems with whatever procedure one chooses. ) Usually, the problem goes away as the body adjusts, but sometimes it doesn't completely and one needs to stay on some type of medication for it, or in extreme cases, revise the surgery.
  16. My husband had RNY bypass surgery in 2000. Last two blood tests (2x per year) he has low Hemoglobin and Low Hemocrit. Web says that is low anemia. Doctor put him on Ferrous Sulfate 65Mg 1x per day and B12 injections 2x per month. Blood test now she his high on B12 and 1 point over high end of scale on Iron. But, still has no energy. He is even taking Vitamin D3 supplementation. His thyroid is low.. close to hyper they say. I wonder if this may have anything to do with it and should he see an endocrinologist? Or Is it possible he could have a gastric bleed? He takes allot of pain reliever for back pain as he has had 3 back surgeries. Just trying to figure this out.

I guess I should have been more specific. You have reposted the same question about your regain situation. Two threads of the same post with several people giving advice. Here is the link to the first time you posted this question. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425456-gastric-sleeve-revision/?tab=comments#comment-4777993

I'm not being mean here, but my question is this . . . if the tool of surgery didn't work the first time, why would a revision work the second time? It's all in your hands now, isn't it? To eat the right number of calories and to exercise are still going to be your job after WLS. I think you can do it. Do a pouch reset. Eat 600-800 calories/day. Get out and walk. Drink that 64 oz of water each day. Eat your protein first. Go back to the basics and I'll bet you can get there.

    Surgery in May 28

I'm not a revision, but have had 5 abdominal surgeries prior to the sleeve. I also, had a hiatal hernia repair as well. I had a fair amount of pain in my sternum area after surgery. Drinking water hurt for a few weeks until I healed. Today I can gulp quite a bit of water with no pain.

    Gastric Bypass after Lap Band

I had my lap-band done in 2009. Weight loss starting off was great, I got down to 245 lbs. I have had a great deal of issues with gastric reflux, vomiting, other days can eat like a horse with no restrictions, I stopped getting fills in 2015, I have gained all but 10 lbs of my pre-surgery weight back, I also currently sleep under a CPAP machine but cannot use it as I should do to the gastric reflux and waking up as if I am choking on my own saliva and coughing horribly. I recently went to see about having a revision and my doctor informed me that I can have the revision but would have to wait 3 mths after removal of the lap-band to have the Roux en y procedure. Can anyone let me know about healing time with the lap-band removal, how long did it take for insurance approval (BCBS), and finally, the actual recovery time for the lap-band removal and the recovery of the GBS. I am a remote worker and was wondering if I would be able to do my job which I sit for 8hrs intermittently with standing. Thank you in advance for information!
