Thanks, DiBaby! And good for you getting back to spin class! I was all ready to sign up when I realized the class was only one night a week...is that typical?!?!? I'm taking Fish Oil, yes. They are huge, yes. But nothing compared to the CLA I am taking! Gels go down fine for me, no matter how large, thank goodness. The pills just kill me. I am also using Creatine, Glutamine, RedLine, B6, L-Carnitine, Flaxseed, and ZMA. I will tell you what I believe about Protein if no one kills the messenger! When I discussed it on another thread, I felt I was gonna be lynched. But this IS an excercise thread, so I should be safe, right? LOL First of all, that's bull-puckey about only being able to absorb ANY specified amount of protein and expect that to apply to the masses. The amount of protein you can take in at any given time depends on your body weight, your current level of excercise, if you consume it immediately before or after your workout, what KIND of protein you are consuming, etcetera. Example, my smoothie has already "grown up" in just a week and now contains 70 grams of protein. But I only get it immediately after a workout. That is simply preference, as you could/should load up either an hour before or immediately following a workout. I use whey protein during the day, as it is utilized generally within two hours. I use casein protein immediately before bed because it is slow release and lasts up to seven hours while I sleep. How much protein you should consume in a day depends on your goals, but a general rule-of-thumb is minimum one gram of protein for each pound of body weight. That should increase to minimum one and a half grams if you are trying to add muscle mass. My goal is a blend of first body fat percentage reduction and second adding muscle mass, and I go with the one and a half grams per pound of body weight. This is a brand new revised goal for me, based on research through tons of reading and talking with trainers and the folks at The Vitamin Shoppe and Max Muscle. I didn't revise the amount of protein I shoot for, but revised how much and how often I need to eat...meaning I need to eat tons more frequently, resulting in eating a lot more over the course of a day. I just can't keep at the ultra-low calorie intake I've been on since June and get all this protein in, so calorie counting went out the window for me. I finally realized that I work out WAY too much to be concerned with how many calories I'm taking in. I was constantly trying to hit my protein goal and stay under my calorie goal, and it just wasn't working for me anymore. It took a lot of research to convince me, though! We will see if I made the right decision soon enough. You should go get this months' copy of the magazine that The Vitamin Shoppe puts out, "Muscle & Body"...fantastic info. I don't know a flippin' thing about the glycemic index stuff yet. Keep us posted!

My doctor let me start back weightlifting at 4 weeks. I had bypass. I had started about 12 weeks before surgery -- worked with a personal trainer -- and got right back into it. I KNOW my results would not have been as great as they've been if I wasn't working out with weights. If you can possibly do it, buy at least a few sessions with a trainer, talk about your goals and have them help you set up a program and teach you proper form.

Help Calories, Carb and Fat Intake
James Marusek replied to mstheresa2u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. So essentially, the approach is not counting calories, carbs and fats during the "Weight Loss" phase. Eventually after several months you will slide into the "Maintenance" phase, and the approach in that phase is different and you can go back to counting calories, carbs and fats. -
Revision sleeve to bypass
Old profile replied to salasmarlene02@gmail.com's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am getting a revision done this coming Wednesday. What happen was I had my sleeve done in nov 2013 and I did great! But I had very bad heartburn so I started taking nexium daily. In 2016 my surgeon did a hiatal hernia repair. That did not help so I just dealt with it and ended being put on dexilant medication for Gerd. So I had a upper GI and endoscopy and it showed regurgitation and acid reflux . So my doctor sent everything over to blue shield of California PPO. And it was authorized by them . My surgery was supposed to Take place April 8, 2020 but had to be rescheduled because of the coronavirus. So my new date is this coming Wednesday, June 24 and I got my clearance and I even had the Covid test last Thursday so I’ve been quarantine till Wednesday. I’ve also gained some weight in the last two years so this should help with my Gerd and weight gain. I’m very nervous but I’ll be so happy to be off the medication for the horrible heartburn. -
What a coincidences I was watching a video about that yesterday, those vitamins patch.. but the lady that was using it still was doing the chewable one as well, cuz she ask and was told that your body doesn’t adsorb as much .. so what she does is .. when she misses a day or something she stick the patch . Or does both cuz she know with “bypass”... what she has ...she doesn’t absorb much either way. I’m getting the chewable ones. Also I found centrum liquid .. which is great too. “There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits.” —Michael Phelps

So... what does Dumping Syndrome actually FEEL like?
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to erik_da_viking's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Nope, this isn’t dumping. ‘Liquid fecal urgency’ (or, as we call in in New Zealand, a fart with follow-through 😁 is really common until our tummies work out their new rhythm. A few people have it forever, but overwhelmingly it settles in the first few days, of as eating returns to solids. I am 7 months post op bypass - I get this occasionally (I just don’t let out a quiet gentle fart any more - too risky!) still. Dunping - hot sweats, nausea but for me no vomiting, yawning, liquid fecal urgency, fatigue - feels like nasty food poisoning and suddenly 30-40 minutes later it stops. It has successfully put me off eating sweet stuff! -
Scared and Anxious Pre Op
hartless 71 replied to bookworm88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being scared goes with the territory. I had gastric sleeve in 2016 and I didn't follow all the rules, now tomorrow I'm having rny bypass and wish I had done that in the first place. I have great anxiety about tomorrows surgery but I know I'm in good hands and I'm tired of all the other health issues I get. It's so worth it. Keep watching YouTube videos and know you can do this ♥️😊 -

ama2414 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I'm new to this site. I had Lapband surgery in 2005, with no results. I'm thinking about having it removed and possibly getting a different surgery. I'm not sure what would be best for me to look into! Anyone with a similar scenario? Thanks! -Amanda -

I had rny gastric bypass and am wondering if I can have a revision surgery done. -
I'm still about a month away from my Gastric Bypass Surgery and am looking at options for vitamins, I'm already on a handful of medications a couple times a day and am not all that excited about throwing a handful of vitamins into the mix. Is anyone using vitamin patches? Are they effective? Seems like an easier option but want to get some input before I buy any.

Weight loss stopped after a couple of days!
goodmourning posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my bypass surgery on April 11th, and lost about 18 lbs in one week. However, since then, the weight is the same and frankly it's unbelievably frustrating. Does anyone know why this might be happening? -

Cheated 5 days after my sleeve
fluffy n fit replied to jenniferbook902's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This isn't Weight Watchers. It's major surgery. The post op diet isn't a suggestion. It's mandatory for your health and well being. Do you know what a leak is? I really wish some of these surgeons would read these forums. The would think twice about who they would operate on. I didn't have the sleeve I had the bypass so leaks really Dont happen with bypass Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App -
Anyone go from sleeve to roux en y ?
Jessica9190 replied to Cyn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What made you change your mind? I have bad acid reflux and I was afraid it will get worse with the sleeve. I was also worried about not losing enough or gaining it back. The sleeve is new and the data isn't available like it is for the bypass. Are you nervous? Where are you? What time is your surgery? I will be thinking of you. -

Gastric or LapBand?
MandaMom23 replied to hayleylamas's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I researched all options excessively for a few years before pursuing the band. For me, the other options were just too invasive. I also liked that the band is removable if absolutely necessary, and I can have it adjusted as needed for the rest of my life. With the sleeve/bypass, if you stretch your stomach back out there's no simple adjustment to fix that, and once you're insides are cut out/ and or rerouted, you can't just put that back. As for weightloss, I'm 9 months out, and have lost 120lbs. The weight I'm at now, was where I wanted to be after 2 years. For me, the band has been an incredible TOOL. No matter which surgery you go with, you have to remember that you're responsible for making the right choices food wise, and it's up to you to put in the effort to make the weightloss happen. There's no quick fix, and at the end of the day, you have to decide what will work best for you. Wishing you the best of luck with your decision! -
Gastric or LapBand?
Zingythingy replied to hayleylamas's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi there I'm frances. I considered like you the bypass and the band. I opted for the band in the end. I was concerned about hair loss and problems with Vitamin deficiencies. I have pernicious anaemia (I don't absorb b vitamins) and other Vitamins are slow on the uptake.. I had 170llbs to lose. As of today I've lost 90llbs. My operation was july the 3rd. Its not a miracle cure but its a fabulous tool to help you if you commit yourself to a healthier lifestyle. I can't advice you one way or the other.. My only opinion is that the bypass is permanent I believe so if you have problems there's no options. My band has given me my life back. I could hardly walk, needed help washing and couldn't wipe myself properly after going to the bathroom.. I was a prisoner in my own body.. Now I'm free. It may take longer with the band but I'm a huge fan of my little silicone friend.. Good luck with your decision. Sent from my GT-S5830 using LapBandTalk -

Palatable. Protien shake
Kelly827 replied to mamie60's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do the premier shakes as well. After a month I was starting to struggle to finish them. A friend who is also had gastric bypass suggested making a smoothie with it. Now I add one banana and ice and blend it with the shake and can tolerate it well again. -
That is what happens to me when I eat too much now. Or like you said drink liquid with my food which has only happened once or twice. Your food doesn't have a chance to process and it has no where to go so it backs up in your esophagus. Try eating a smaller portion and obviously follow the 30/30 rule. I suffered from severe reflux prior to bypass surgery. It is a burning sensation and then your stomach acid actually backs up in your esophagus and ultimately your throat. It can keep you walking the floors for hours on end. From my understanding when they do the bypass if that is the surgery you had, there is no stomach acid. The reason they have you take something like Prilosec is to avoid a stomach ulcer which can give you that pain in your gut/chest. I also get that feeling if I have eaten a heavy food. It can be very painful. I try to stick to 1 percent cottage cheese. I tried the heavier stuff and I get that pain in my gut.

I flew 100+ flights a year for 25 years, hauling my 400#plus body all over the world doing my work. I hated the flying and most of all I hated taking more than my share of a limited seating area, and hated asking for seat belt extensions. I finally bought my own so I did not have to ask for them, and then they made using your own extension illegal...I was back to having to ask the flight attendant again, to the stares of all of those around me. When I retired and left the road four years ago, I was thrilled to not have to deal with the constant embarrassment. This week, I flew from Grand Junction CO to Pittsburgh PA and back, four flights total. NO SEAT BELT EXTENSION NEEDED! I had gastric bypass in April, 100# down, BMI slipped under 40 finally, and I comfortably fit in the seat. Even though at 6'4" the person next to me knew they were sitting next to a great big guy, the arm rests were down, I did not "bulge" under the arm rest, and I did not inconvenience anyone. I still hate flying but what a change.... just getting around the airport was so much easier.

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, your weight loss is achieved through meal volume control. At 2 weeks post op, that is an incredibly small amount of food. So although you may be use to counting calories, you might not focus on those at the moment. The most important elements after weight loss surgery is to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Walk around 30 minutes each day or equivalent exercise. Follow the meal volume guidelines. The part of the stomach that processes fats and sugars has been cut away. Therefore if you consume this type of food, it will get dumped into your intestines and can lead to dumping syndrome. After about a year, your intestines realize something has happened and physically adapts and changes to absorb this type of food. Therefore when you are about a year out, it is not so important. But sugar and complex carbs should probably still be limited otherwise the weight that you lost might start to come back.
