Foodies - honestly how bad is it?
Healthy_life2 replied to Ruth9454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Straight talk…Get a copy of your surgeons/directions plan and food progression for clarification. You need to know if this is something you can stick to. You have to want this enough to change. I hope you go into this with realistic expectations. Just because a few people on this site can eat anything and not gain weight does not mean that will be your personal experience. Many don’t keep the weight off long term eating what they want and relying on restriction alone. If you eat off plan and notice it slows/stops your weight loss you many need to stick to your dietician food plan. (read all the posts on regain and revision) I’m five years out. I maintain in the 130’s. I had to work for this. I followed my plan. I was consistent not perfect. I got to goal in six months ( not the norm with the sleeve) How bad is it if you enjoy food? I love food and I don’t feel deprived. I enjoy trying new recipes and ingredients. I make healthy versions of old favorites. I go to restaurants and social events. It easy to find protein and veggies and other items on my plan that keep me in weight loss mode. I also stay within my weight loss/ maintaining calories and macros. Your diet will change when you go into maintenance mode. You will be adding more carbs and can indulge within reason. Stomach issues: Most sleeves can tolerate anything without dumping syndrome (sleeve surgery intestines are not altered) Other surgeries once sugar hits the intestine they dump. Only my opinion. If you can’t control sugar and food choices, the sleeve many not be a good fit for you. -
Ok now I have my surgery date which is June 3 however I paid my doctor the $221.27 for whatever I had to pay I can’t remember. Now today the hospital called and informed me that I have to pay 2,821.00 on the date of my surgery or I can’t have it. I told that lady why in the hell would I just not receive this information some people don’t have that type of money. She said we will only accept half and we will bill you for the rest ok but still I don’t have $1400. This is crazy because I should have known this information way before now. When I had the sleeve my doctor had the hospital to tell me what I would have to pay out of pocket and they put me on a three month payment plan before I had my surgery. I actually thought that I wouldn’t have to pay since it was deem medical reason for the revision to bypass. My insurance company said that I hadn’t met my in network out of pocket deductible which is $5,500 some of these insurance companies are complete riff off.

Did anyone go from the sleeve to Mini bypass??
NYCGAL000 posted a topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
and if so, do you recommend it? -
Overall the bypass rny is the best for many reasons you can find on here but it is up top the individual. Good Luck

Of course there is the risk of side effects with either procedure. From what I've read and what I know though, dumping, which is having to run to the bathroom after you eat, is more common with the bypass. I had the sleeve, and it's happened to me once or twice in 14 months. You will eventually be able to physically eat whatever you want; now, the issue is: will those foods help you reach your weight loss goals? I usually eat really well; for instance, an egg and a couple of bacon for breakfast, fruit for a snack, grilled chicken for lunch, etc.... but every now and then I allow myself to have something I really want...maybe a donut even, but it's not all the time and it's not regularly. You can have the foods you love, but you may not be able to have them everyday if you want to lose weight. -
Gastric Sleeve to Bypass revision
LaLyNnR replied to Chaelove0810's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve 5 years ago. Only lost 100 pounds and have since gained 50 back. I never was satisfied with my restriction and I feel that has a huge play in my failure! I’m doing the bypass this fall and I can’t wait. Reflux is an issue too but at least it’s not a daily thing for me. I still have about 175-200 to lose so wish me luck please!!!! -
how has surgery impacted your hunger?
CaribeRidge replied to Zemi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had my surgery, gastric bypass, on 1/22/19. What I notice the most is head hunger. My mind wants food but my stomach says no. I find myself wanting to put a lot of food on my plate when it is something I really like and being disappointed that I can only eat a bit and not a lot like I used to. So I have to remind myself that I can no longer eat like that, nor do I want to, intellectually. Granted all this happens in a couple of seconds. "Mmm, I want more...no I can't have more... sadness... (pep-talk) this is the way it is now and how it should be" Then I hope my brain will eventually train itself to not be so greedy. For the most part, I eat because it is "time to eat" and not so much because I feel hunger. When I do it is typically a side effect of some of my meds which cause hunger or I missed the "time to eat" cause I was busy and eventually my stomach says "hey, remember me?" I think I am probably one of the luckier ones in this. It would be so much more difficult if I was dealing with stomach hunger as well as mind hunger. -
I have had both. For me, I was determined to do the sleeve despite my surgeon saying that Bypass is the Cadillac of surgeries. I thought that RNY just seemed so... final. I wasn't ready to commit. So I had the sleeve and I can tell you that for ME, I woke up from surgery hungry and I stayed hungry. Then had a complication, but that's neither here nor there when it comes to choosing my surgery. forward to this February and I had RNY. Sooooo much better (for ME). I wasn't hungry. I now feel restriction where I didn't before. I don't feel weird or that different, except that I feel like my tool is working for me now. Good luck with choosing! Maybe just think about your reasons for wanting one over the other and analyse that.

Hi, (sorry for my english)..6 years ago I had the sleeve , I lost 20 kgs. (I wasn't very overweight, but I wanted to be thin). I kept my weight for 3-4 years, until I had to stop making excersice ( I ran marathons, ironmans, play tennis, etc), because an injury on my neck. So the last year I regain half of the weight I lost at the begining of my sleeve. To make it short I went to the doctor, he said I didn't need to lose weight but if I really wanted he would make my stomach as small as the first time (it is called "la remanga"). "the sleeve again".. It was a total disaster, whatever I eat I vomit it, even the water I drank I couldn't keep it in my stomach. So the doctor had to make me an emergency bypass in January (6 days after "la remanga"). So I had 2 operations. I lost 10 kgs. I am very thin again, but it was really scary and its been difficult in many ways. Between the sleeve and the bypass, I would choose the sleeve by far (for many reasons). Hopefully my experience can help you in some way.

So, I'm 9 weeks out from Gastric Bypass, and I've lost nearly 50 lbs. I can already tell I'm in better shape as I'm able to walk around longer without losing my breath, able to fit in things that were tight on me before, and well, my shirts and work pants are loose. But I've noticed something else. Sitting in my chair at work starts hurting after a while as it feels like the hard surface is digging into my butt. Also, my back will randomly start aching even though it's carrying less around. My mother, who has also had bypass, said that it's likely the body adjusting to the lower weight and the pain shall pass, but still, it's... odd. You'd think the pain would get less as I started weighing less, not more.

Foodies - honestly how bad is it?
catwoman7 replied to Ruth9454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
first, diarrhea is really uncommon (unless you're talking about the DS, which is not a common surgery. The vast majority of us are sleeve or gastric bypass patients). Most of us struggle with the opposite problem - constipation. It's due mostly to the diet (high protein, low carb) and the supplements (iron and calcium), not the surgery per se. So I personally wouldn't worry about that. I'm also a bit of a foodie. You're pretty restricted the first few months after surgery, but I can eat anything now (albeit in smaller portions) except for really high-fat meals. Going into it, though, I wasn't sure how it would turn out for me. I, too, like an above poster, had to make the decision of losing my excess weight vs. eating what I wanted. The older I got and the more my weight started affecting my health, the clearer the decision became. -
I need some straight talk. I'm considering getting the sleeve, but I'm worried about whether or not I will be able to live with it. while I do want t lose weight, I can't even imagine it so it is hard to have an attitude that I will sacrifice anything for it. One concern is the food. If you are a foodie like me (I love food but I'm good with small amounts of it), how hard is it to live with this surgery? There is a lot of confusing information around. My potential surgeon says after 2 months, you can eat "normally" just smaller amounts. That sounds fantastic, but it doesn't jive with a lot of what I've read/heard. Some people indicate that they can't have carbs like bread. Others talk about having the kind of meat they eat severely restricted. What is the truth? I'm fine with restricting calories, etc., but I still want to be able to enjoy food. Another concern is "accidents". One lady I know talks a lot about all of the diarrhea accidents she had after surgery, particularly in the first year. She did have the full bypass, so maybe that is part of it, but I also know a woman who had the sleeve and talks about how she can never be far from a bathroom. I already have some irritable bowel issues (which is part of why I am considering the sleeve rather than bypass), and I really won't be pleased if that is going to get even worse. I want to have a realistic view of what life would be like post surgery. I really appreciate anything anyone is willing to share.

Went to my initial consult with the Bariatric surgeon/ program I chose. Came home with a folder full of information & helpful organization of all the testing that needs to be completed while I complete the required nutritional counseling. She also let me know my insurance typically takes 6 weeks to reply with authorization when submitted, so that puts my potential surgery date near the new year if all stays on track
I felt comfortable with her, in our discussions she agrees that I am a good candidate for the Gastric Bypass. I appreciated the 'introduction' class that was given after the consult with the surgeon where I was given this binder of every referral (from her, not my pcp referrals), & contact information for all the testing needed to make my contacts/calls tomorrow morning even easier
I start my nutrition classes on June 5th, so that's when the clock will start toward insurance approval & getting the tool to help me reach my goals

I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?
Lolo 2020 replied to Pam Peltz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey I hat a hiatal hernia repair and did a gastric sleeve at the same time . Thought it would cure my acid reflux but although I’ve lost 62 lbs and am a normal BMI my acid reflux is worse ! What’s up with that ? Does it mean I will have to eventually do a revision ? I don’t eat a lot of dense foods , mostly shakes , cottage cheese , fish and yogurt but sometimes it’s really bad , particularly at night. Anyone have any advice ? -
Hi all!! I was revised from VSG to RNY for severe GERD on 3/18. My pre-op diet weight was 251 and today it is 216.6. Weight loss has slowed and I’ve had a few stalls. Shark week sucks because I gain despite changing nothing. Slow and steady is better for my body but my mind doesn’t agree and that is a daily struggle. How are all the other VSG to RNY revisions doing?

June 2019 Surgery Siblings!
BulletWithButterflyWings replied to BulletWithButterflyWings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome to our family love!!! We're excited to have you. I'm also having the bypass done. Congrats on your first granddaughter! Hopefully you have your date soon! -
Hi all, I am new to the forum so apologies if I breach any etiquette with my post but I would appreciate y'alls help and input. I would also like to say I completely appreciate you probably aren't medically qualified, I am generally looking for peoples experiences and any solutions they had to the following problem, Essentially I had lap band (or gastric band as known in the UK) surgery around 3 weeks ago. I am also taking 6 types of medication to help with my mental health issues (bipolar, depression and anxiety disorder). Between themselves they approved me for the surgery under the proviso that I ground my medications up or break open the capsules - I was told there shouldn't be an issue by both Dr's. However my symptoms are now such that I am in a dark place, probably worse than I have been for several years. I have gotten in touch with both institutions, the Dr that performed the surgery told me this is not his domain and to contact my psychiatrist, which I did however they cannot speak to me, even over the phone, until Friday minimum. I was wondering if anyone here had similar issues and if so what was the solution. I am really worried they may have to reverse the surgery or change my medications which had previously gotten rid of pretty much all of my symptoms. I appreciate I may sound pretty ignorant but based on the advice from both Dr's I moved ahead with the surgery. I have managed to find studies that demonstrate the bio-availability of certain antidepressants can be reduced after gastic bypass / sleeve surgery but nothing relating to the band. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks, G

almost everyone, sleeve or bypass, has their first stall within the first month after surgery. We call it "the three week stall" because it usually happens during week 3, but not always. Mine was weeks 2 and 3. Lost nothing. Then during week 4, I dropped like 6-8 lbs practically overnight. Do a search on the three week stall and you'll find HUNDREDS of posts on it. Just stick to your program and the stall will break. I promise.

I was going to suggest the same thing - just do as much research as you can. They're both good surgeries, and I've known people who've been very successful with both. I chose bypass because I had GERD pre-surgery, and I didn't want to risk it getting worse (sleeve can cause - or increase - GERD in some people, but not all. But I didn't want to take the risk). If it hadn't been for the GERD, I'm not sure which one I would have picked. I'm sure I would have been happy with either.

I am almost a full 7 years post op. Since we aren't supposed to have carbonated beverages with bypass I haven't...but I have had mixed drinks...it hits me super quick....I get really really buzzed....and move to water and sober up pretty quickly. I don't really care for Alcohol regardless but I tried it and it hits me quick personally Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
