Do any of you get "crap" from RNY

Flowers, I am so sorry that you had such a negative experience. I was lucky, I was able to get some real facts from my Band Buddy. Please, follow your heart. Quite a few of us have experienced the prejudice from these groups. Here are a couple facts you all should know - I have seen these in more than one place, take them as you would like: Erosion is RARE , they need to get their stats before they quote them . Slips are Rare and 90% of the time are fixed w/ an unfill ! And at the 5 yr mark weight loss for the band and the RNY are the SAME !!! I was very upset and copied exact quotes from the posts to show her what "they" had said. And I just read, RNY might be faster in the beginning, but Lap Bands have the same loss down the road. I'm not sure about you, but I choose the slower method for a reason. My regular MD liked the slower method for the same reason. I myself personally am looking for a "healthy" or near healthy method. I do not care to have to worry about malabsorbtion issues for years. Something we should all think about, I don't recall seeing any posts bashing RNY or anyother bypass procedure. On my Surgeon's web site, I encoraged someone to make their own decission and was met with a bariage of trash talk. Everyone is different and the choice is theirs.
  2. Hi everyone, I am 45yo, a married mom of 2, and I am currently on the preop diet with only 7lbs left to go. I've been what I called "over weight" for most of my life. My highest was 264 and now I'm at 227. I started thinking of WLS several years ago when I had a few friends go through it, but the time just wasn't right and decided to keep dieting and losing weight on my own. I'd had high hopes that each time I tried was going to be the last, but that didn't happen. I've learned a lot about "dieting" in my lifetime, so it was hard for me to admit that I just can't do it on my own. I figured I had all the tools I needed and that should be good enough. A few years ago I finished my last "diet" and just gave up. I couldn't force myself to do it anymore. I still kept some control, but mostly I was still overeating too-much-for-me portions and not exercising enough. The thought of WLS has never left my mind though, so this year I decided to look into it. I'm tired of being limited because of my size and I want to be healthy and active! It's amazing to me that with a lot of information and a new tool, I've really committed to change the way I eat (no more bad "diet" words) and live. The preop food plan is really working for me and I love it. I get hungry sometimes but I am working on thinking things through instead of just reacting (and eating). I'm learning to cope both mentally and physically and it is great. I know that the surgery will help me to continue losing weight and get to a point where I look and feel better, and am free from medical issues brought on by my obesity. So far I've had my orientation classes and first surgeon visit. Next will be a Psychologist appointment and nutrition class. My Dr. has given me the choice between RnY and Sleeve and I am 90% sure I'll go RnY. My husband is being so supportive of me, and my kids are really interested in my changed way of eating. I love that I can educate them while learning myself. Hopefully I can get all my preop work and appts done and have my surgery by January. Fingers crossed!
  3. Hi I was just revised a week ago and i have the same amount of lapro port sites, and hospital stay was the same length. But obviously the specifics of the two surgeries are very different, even more so because your anatomy is already altered. Recovery, for me, has been much smoother so far because i had realistic expectations about pain management and took care of that immediately. I would say it seems be similar to the intial surgery for recovery, But GERD appears to be gone so far. However IDK about weightloss aspect unfortunately Good Luck 💜
  4. Hi Everyone, I just had revision surgery on Thursday, July 25th for the same symptoms, GERD, hiatal hernia. Stayed in the hospital 2 nights and my biggest discomfort was the soreness in my throat from the throat tube during surgery. OMG i couldn't talk or swallow, so drinking water or soup broth was very painful. It's been 2 days and the pain has subsided significantly, so i'm finally getting my fluids in. I feel blessed and can't wait to see the results of the weight loss. Good luck and God bless you during this part of your journey.

    Tomorrow's the big day

Good luck tomorrow! I will have my revision from the sleeve to modified DS on 9/8. I look forward to seeing your progress!
  6. RNY revision to duodenal switch. I'm a little nervous. I've started this journey in March so I'm ready. I hope to post updates as time goes on. I know God is with me and i feel very positive that this time i will make it to goal weight and keep it off. When i had my original bypass almost 15 yrs. ago, i didn't have as much guidance or knowledge that i do now. Much has changed over the years and I'm so ready. Is anyone else having your revision tomorrow or very soon. I'm here for anyone who wants to chat or vent or contemplating getting a revision done. My best to all of you. God Bless!
  7. i had gastric bypass surgery september 13, 2018 and have lost 134 lbs now. i am no longer on oxygen or a c-pap. i only take blood pressure meds prn. i have gone from a 6xl to a size 20. my life has totally changed
  8. I know right? I thought it only happened to gastric bypass patients. My surgeon has explained that, although I still have a stomach (albeit a tiny one), I can still have rapid stomach motility. And the suspects are high level sugars (explains the muffin), and high protein without carbohydrates added. And not chewing my food thoroughly, so my stomach doesn't dump a whole chunk of protein at once. I try to follow all the directions, but after 4 years, you slip up now and then! I had blood tests done 2 weeks ago and they were perfect. Its just that the dumping, combined with the dry retching is miserable. I wish I had known...

OH NO! I am so sorry, I know that sucks and you are probably so let down. i wish I knew what to say to help you feel better. Just focus on recovery and then before you know it your surgery will be here again. Why couldn't your surgeon do both surgeries? I had hernia repair, esophagus damage repair and bypass all at the same time.

    Anyone on the pre-op diet?

Hi Docs Wife, My name is Kelly. I went to one of my pre op appts today. I didnt realize that you were put on a diet before you had your surgery. It is gonna be tough for me too. I am not certain if I will have my surgery before Xmas or not. I was really surprised that every one in that office told me to have the sleeve done and then the nurse told me I could have the bypass if I wanted it! I weigh 218. I do not want the bypass. I wish you the best and I am about to know what you are dealing with!!!!

    My port is flipped already!!

Both of my port revisions were paid for by insurance....they were "medically necessary"
  12. Hi White06...I most definately think either you have a problem with the band, or you are overfilled. A healthy, properly filled band is a tool that enables us to eat hard Protein, not liquid meals. Trust me, I've been there. Please get an unfill ASAP before you damage your esophagus or band, if it isn't already. What does your doctor say about all this? I'm not trying to be judgemental; I went through hell with my band before finally having it revised to RNY, and I hate to see you suffer like this. Take care,

    Band eroded needhelp!!!!

With erosion there is no choice, you have to remove the band. The issue you want to consider here is if you want to revise to something else and if so, what. The only other "restrictive only" procedure is a sleeve and quite frankly, it's a lot safer than bands long term. It is far easier for a weight loss journey as well, I know... I've had them both. ;o) Something you will want to discuss with your doctor is if you do want to revise to something else (sleeve, bypass, DS) can it be done at the same time. The answer is likely to be no. Please do not get another band, if you erode once you are very likely to do so again. The new bands not eroding or having less chance for erosion is a sales pitch only, not proven. Consider this, unless someone is wayyyy too tight for wayyyy too long, they don't even know what causes erosion. If they do not know what causes erosion how can they prevent it? The claims about the new bands are bogus. Slips are increasing just as they were with the old bands and erosion is the same. They used to think that smoking caused erosion but then they figured out non smokers were eroding at the same rates as smokers. Then they thought it was NSAIDs. That turned out to be untrue. Then they blamed caffeine. Considering erosion happens from the outside of the stomach I'm not clear on why they ever considered NSAIDs and caffeine. One line of thinking is the stuff they use to sterilize surgical instruments. Some believe the residue is caustic and when they use that instrument on the next person it burns the tissue on the stomach a bit and that is the start of erosion.

    Confused

When was your surgery? Are you following the diet plan as your dietitian set for you? I am only 4 days post op for Gastric Sleeve, so I can't answer to gastric bypass questions, but I suppose it all depends on where you are in your recovery.

    Failure

I am 3.5 years out and yes my appetite is back. I think that is normal... The whole idea is that the WLS helps us develop new habits, and even all these years later I really CAN'T eat as much as I used to as long as I stick to dense Protein first... everytime. My advice is to go back to basics. Protein first. Don't drink with meals but hydrate really well between meals. Limit carbs - and don't eat junky slider type foods. dont drink your calories (soda, fruit juice, booze etc) and watch out for "healthy sugars" as they can trigger cravings too - examples are fruit and fruit juices. Watch Protein Bars as they are high calorie/high carb. It is a lifelong struggle but I will say I am alot happier fighting it out in the 150s than I was fighting it out in the 300 plus plus range.... Hang in there! Oh I am sorry, I thought you were a sleever like me... it seems you posted in the bypass forums so I assume you had a different surgery. I suspect my advice/comments are similiar though regardless of the WLS type...
  16. Why did you have a revision done? Just curious I wonder sometimes if I need to have one done. 17 years out. Sent from my LG-G710 using BariatricPal mobile app

Best of luck to you! I had my bypass surgery yesterday. Everything went well. I am drinking clear fluids today with no issues. I was very nervous leading up to this procedure and am relieved it is over and went so well. I have been walking quite a bit today and get to go home tomorrow morning.

    Long term reflux?

Garland Mom... Will you revise to another type of surgery? Everyone Else... Some people are just more sensitive to fills (and the pressure they place on the esophagus) than others, per my (banded) surgeon. Therefore, a tiny fill can be "too tight" in that respect, but still not provide restriction. It's okay to rely on meds to control the reflux, as long as you have had everything checked and your stoma is a reasonable diameter. That's what determines a too-tight band - the size of the stoma. Your stoma should be about the size of a number two pencil.

    First Fill

Had my first fill today! I found out I have a 10 cc band, with 3 cc's already in from surgery. He put 1 cc in. The doc was VERY happy with my weightloss. He says I'm on par so far with his bypass patients! And he didn't want to give me a fill - I said no way, I'm hungry! So he did. It wasn't that bad. He didn't give me any numbing medication or anything, and it hurt a bit, then a bit of pressure, but it wasn't intolerable or anything. Now that I know what it feels like, the next one won't be as bad.

    Feeling Guilty

I also thank you for bring this subject up. I do believe God has a special place for people like us. Sometimes we go throw life careing, parenting and giveing support to others , that we tend to forget or not realize what is going on with our bodys....I sit and ask myself where did all this come from, I mean when I really looked at my body mass.I cried for hours and came to a point where I almost went the other way, as to "oh what the heck, I'm here already so what?"But my heart and mind told me that I am better than that...So one of the nurses in my doc. office had the Gastric Bypass, and she said to me Quote" this is not for you". Than when I looked at myself and ask ms why did I not look at me than, was she tring to tell me something? Anyway, after that day when I meant me, that is when I took control and agreed, its time to do this. You don't know how important these threads means to me "Very Supporting" I thank all and Bless all....we are doing something for us! elite53:biggrin0:
  21. I just want to address the bolded statement. I had a leak 2 days post my revision. I also had horrible anesthesia complications during the repair, landed on life support for 4-5 days and my prognosis was grave at best. I had an extensive 3.5 month long recovery with an additional hospitalization for abscesses, was on TPN with a central pic line for over 2 weeks with nothing by mouth for over 20 days after the leak repair. My husband was deployed, and not allowed to come home during all of this even as I lay in ICU with a 10% chance of survival. I can assure you that my recovery was pure hell, but not once did I think "oh crap what have I done!". To this very day, I have absolutely ZERO regrets nor am I anything short of 100% certain that I made the right choice with VSG. I never once doubted that I made the "right" choice with VSG, and today, I'm even more certain that I made the best decision. I've said it many times here that I would endure every struggle and obstacle in my recovery to live the life I have today. I just thought I would throw out my experience to give a different perspective on complications with any surgery.

    2nd thoughts

I was 260 pounds prior to my RNY gastric bypass surgery. I am 5 foot 7 inches tall. At this point I am 2 years post-op and down to 148 pounds. So I don't think you are too thin for weight loss surgery. But since you have a different medical system in the U.K., it might cause you problems with financial coverage. I don't think it will negatively affect your ability to play soccer. It might actually make you better able to play, by improving your stamina levels.
  23. My band slipped twice and was finally removed in March of 2015. 12 months later I am 130 lbs heavier and pre-op for the bypass. My date was set for June 15th and I am so excited. It took a bit for me to make the decision to move forward because of all the mental and physical torture the band put me in the last two years I had it. Then without the band I felt like a failure and watched my weight come back. the 15th cannot come fast enough. I know it will be different this time!
