What medical issues have you overcome since WLS?
CarmenP replied to Jemma23's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am now considered “in remission” from Type II diabetes. For me, this has been THE most important, most profoundly significant benefit of my RNY. My last A1c was 4.8. I never had high BP, but given my weight and the diabetes, I know it was only a matter of time before the other co-morbidities caught up with me. Aside from some vitamin deficiencies (which I can live with and address with supplements), I have not regretted my decision to have gastric bypass surgery. -
Hello!!! I am set for 7/2 at730am. I will be having gastric bypass with cholecystectomy. I would love to be your buddy Looking for one myself. My BMI is 41 currently, and I have no other issues. Basically healthy obese person, just can never lose all the weight I have needed to with diet and exercise!

Gastric bypass or sleeve
Panda333 replied to laura071693's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
i'm having to make the same decision right now. Surgeon suggested bypass but I went to him for the sleeve. I've had friends who've had success with both. The most I can figure is below from my own anecdotal research Sleeve Good for the most obese patients because it's an easy surgery for them to get through - They do the sleeve on 600 lb life Bad if you have GERD and you can get GERD after this due to the stricture Bad if you are a chronic overeater People that don't resolve their eating issues end up stretching the sleeve and getting bypass anyway All Calories and vitamins get absorbed Bypass Good if you have diabetes, cures it in one day Complex - intestines are rerouted, more complex surgery Good if you have other co-morbidities Slightly better weight loss sustained over the long term (more stats though) Gold Standard - Who knows what this means it's just been around longer Malabsorption of calories and vitamins means you will have to take vitamins every day but good news ,many calories you eat are also not absorbed. My pcp and my good friend say sleeve is for me and my surgeon and therapist are recommending the bypass. I think you have to be really honest of how you got overweight. I am not a person that overeats. I'm obese and my body likes it there even when I eat 800 calories. That is why I'm leaning towards bypass although I'm dreading having to take a vitamin every day. If I was a severe overeater I would do the sleeve. That's just what I'm thinking now. -
ACID REFLUX MEDICATION DANGER
summerset replied to berry girl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Depends. I was told that there would be an 80% chance that I wouldn't need reflux meds anymore. I wasn't one of the 80%. Only recently though when I quit all dairy I was able to wean myself off the PPI. I'm without them since a few days and I hope that the last remaining symptoms I sometimes have at night will either go away completely (the proton pumps need some adjustment time after all) or that at least I won't have esophagitis in the next EGD. Regarding the MGB vs. RNY - usually an RNY is the surgery to go for. However, I was revised into an MGB Dr. Rutledge performs with the option to revise to RNY later if necessary (there was a specific reason for this decision so no discussions on how much sense that might make or not). I also had a hernia that was closed. Rutledge has some information regarding MGB and reflux on youtube if you're interested. In sum the surgery is no guarantee that you can stop taking reflux medication. There might also be a hernia and some food sensitivities contributing to the reflux problem. -
Looking into getting the rny surgery, how have your experiences been so far ?
elcee replied to jfhh1234's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 4 months out from a revision from lapband to RNY. I have no regrets and would do it again in a flash. I have lost the weight I had regained and am now sitting around my goal. The only time I have issues is when I do something silly like thinking I can eat 🎂 -
Looking into getting the rny surgery, how have your experiences been so far ?
Briswife15 replied to jfhh1234's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 10 weeks out from RNY gastric bypass, and have no regrets even though I developed an uncommon complication. That being said, serious complications are rare. I am happy with my choice, and rate of weight loss. go for it!! Best wishes. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I have read that the risk of reflux with a mini bypass is still relatively high, generally RNY is recommended for reflux a,though sometimes even that doesn’t work

Looking into getting the rny surgery, how have your experiences been so far ?
jfhh1234 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello, I recently started the process to get wls, I have type 2 diabetes, and recently started getting acid reflux, my surgeon recommended for me to get the rny to get rid of my diabetes and the acid reflux altogether, but my question is to those who have had the gastric bypass how has your experience been with this surgery so far ? have you had any complications from this surgery or regrets? -
ACID REFLUX MEDICATION DANGER

I saw a Bariatric doctor last year and he said if I converted to a mini gastric bypass I would no longer have to take them as acid issue would be fixed. Have you heard this? -
Anyone have a Nissen Wrap and Bypass Surgery
CraftyNana posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I'm new here and have many questions, but my biggest one is if anyone here has had bypass surgery who previously had a Nissen wrap for reflux. I could explain the nissen, but those that have had it will know what I am talking about. I have many health issues and all of my doctors are for me getting this bypass surgery. They say that it would be worse for me not to have it. They need to unwrap the Nissen and then do the surgery, which they say will add about 2-3 hours to my surgery. I know I need to get this done, but would love to hear from someone that has had this done with the Nissen. How long did your surgery take? Were there complications? Now I know that everyone is different so don't have to explain that to me, I just need to find out how it went for you...... -
I'm preparing myself for admission to a 45-day rehab for alcohol addiction post RNY gastric bypass. This is not the first round of treatment. I had my gatric bypass 10/1999 in San Diego CA at the facility operated by Drs Clark and Wittgrove. By nine months post op I lost 106 pounds and maintained that loss through 2008. However, during that time I also began experiencing and struggling with a dependence on alcohol. Dr Clark explained that once I physically adapted to my new physiology, I could re-introduce various other foods and drinks, determining whether they would compel the infamous "dumping syndrome". Sugar was a definite "no consume", but when I went to my family's traditional Sunday brunch several months post op and slaked my thirst with a flute of champagne, I did not experience dumping syndrome. All I felt was a "super high" from the sip I took. After that, the game was on. My addiction began in earnest. Dumping Syndrome I was warned about. There were no flags waved before me about the possibilities of alcoholism and alcohol addiction. I am waving those flags now! I first went into treatment April of 2008. I did not complete the relapse segment of treatment because I had scheduled reconstructive surgery for a work related injury. The surgery schedule overlapped that final stage of rehab. I think God walked with me through those years because I remained sober until my mother began dying in late 2016. It was then I began drinking volumes of wine that increased to the equivalent, on average, of 4 bottles of wine a day. Occasionally, I thought drinking vodka a better alternative than drinking wine. Don't ask me why. The mind of an addict. I returned to wine. Drug of choice. Drug of self-destruction. One day I decided to try and find out why and and how my "take it or leave it " attitude toward alcohol became a "can't live without it " condition. On the internet, I discovered that, as gastric bypass patients, we are unique. In the same way that we each do not necessarily experience dumping syndrome, we do not experience the effects of alcohol the same. Post gastric bypass, my physiology became hyper receptive to the effects of alcohol, particularly the initial high produced from its consumption. I believe there is no way on this planet that I am unique in this experience. I want others to know, as I now seek treatment a second time on June 13, 2019, that if this is happening to you, don't wait, don't blame yourself, it's your body reacting to the changes made. Be totally honest with those treating you. Only then, hopefully armed with what I'm writing here, can you get the medical help, psychological treatment and ongoing care that will make you whole. TMI question re. vomiting
Frustr8 replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And if anyone is remotely interested, I still vomit. I eat so slowly things even like soup are ice cold at the end. And after all these blasted scopes my stoma seems to stay strictured, the one I had on April 12th, which was about the time of last posting, Dr N swore my stoma was now patent( doctorese for open) and I should have no more dietary challenges. Ha Ha to the INTH Degree Ha! I will concede she thought she did a good job that day, as she is withdrawing the tubing she undoubtedly is mentally patting herself on the back "Good girl Sabrena, you finally got her fixed and fixed for Good!" And my stoma, if it has a personality is snickering inside me, " Thought she fixed me, I will just snap back shut like a bear trap!" I am an obstructionist!" and of course I tried to branch out that night, and with the usual results. And Dear God I get SO TIRED of this! Now if nothing solider is going tbrough, and I must maintain on broth, soup, some pureed and protein shakes I will make the best of it. I am brewing my own soups, that way I lessen the preservatives, know exactly what went in, even cooked and pureed down I don't add things I have had trouble with in the past. Try to keep things quiet enough my vitamins minerals and ulcer/anti- nausea meds stay down, Of course those who don't know my underlying story, they are certain I am doing wonderous well. And perhaps it does look that way. Meanwhile I am wrapped around a wastebasket or with a plastic vomit bag. Two weeks ago on a Wednesday I was having a especially rotten day, I had barely keep things down for 15 hours, worried I might be getting worse, should I go to local ER which is only marginally fluent with bariatrics, especially RNY bypass and pray they transfer me to Columbus? Well before I commited to such an action, I wanted to speak with my clinic. Oh and I wish I had never picked up the phone! Barely able to talk in between the urping and I got a nurse who accused me of Munchausing, a fancy way of saying I was claiming illness for sympathy and to be the center of the universe. She went on to tell me that I knew doggone well there was NOTHING WRONG with me and that I needed to seek help from my county's Mental health agency, now go away and stop bothering them. This while I was sitting holding a plastic washpan and and you could hear me being sick. Well I do not enjoy this state of affairs, didn't vomit up this much with 3 pregnancies, and it is not something I enjoy, but I am not crazy, and instead of wanting attention I would like to hide in a cave. So I kept moistening my mouth frequently, late evening it started to pass over and before bed I kept down some sugar-free pudding. Better on Thursday but I still went to my PCP, took one lock at me and said Do you realize s i he I last saw you 6 weeks ago you have lost 37 pounds! Yeah no s***, would you be interested in how I did it, since Thing 1 and Thing 2 in Columbus were not? And also am I going Wacky-woo because they tried to convince me I was? Had us a little chat, first he apologized for their actions because that was his Alma Mater, something up to this point he had been proud of. And he said let me help you if they won't, I think you would benefit from seeing our local gastroenterologist, because my gut instinct is there is something else underlying. They called me first the next morning, first gave me an appointment in August, then less than a half- hour later Samantha Doctor' Nurse Practioner called back and told me Dr Upchurch would like to look internally at this, would I object to an endoscopy on the 12th of June? He agreed with my PCP_ (bless his ❤for facilitating this) that this may not be as simplistic as Thing1 and 2 thought, and the extra Cat Scan PCP sent me for at local hospital showed a puffy ileum, at the very least ilietis, and that was still a new facet or brand- New can of worms. Minor chance IBS or Crohns setting in? But don't worry, he was planning to check this all out! Isn't it odd how people drop their BP or Diabetes meds after surgery , it fixes them, meanwhile my saga and testings continue? Definitely not a run of the mill weight loss recovery! Just seems my path in life. And now the urping kid has almost made it down to Onederland, when you started out at 365+, have lost 115 pounds since surgery 9 months ago, that part You Can celebrate, but what a miserable unfunlike way to get there! And 9 months I was hoping to be living the Good Life, cheerfully helping the Newbees and losing my last 25 pounds to goal. Well man may propose but God disposes and not always the way you would expect. So here I am , posting away, I already threw up once today but am trying to stay quiet and minimize the chances of doing it again. And I HOPE Dr Upchurch has good news but I kinda doubt it and I don't have an appointment scheduled with either Dr Needleman or Valerie, his head Nurse-Practioner until Mid-August, is this Benign Neglect or do they just not care anymore? And until, Thing 1 and Thing 2 raised their little heads, I loved and respected every -body in Columbus at the Bariatric Clinic. Those 2 better lay low when I do go back, I could forget Mama raised me to be a lady, eventually I may forgive but Frustr8 NEVER Forgets, especially people who do not have her best interests at ❤! I have lived too long to be so disrespected! -
The reason that incision will hurt more than the others is because its the port site used for a liver retractor - during the surgery more torque is put on it to lift the liver away from the stomach while they work on creating your bypass. The other ports don't stress the surrounding tissue. Hope that helps ease your mind!

I've discussed this at length with my team and when extreme GERD is not well controlled with PPIs they try other paths erring on the side of caution concerning the new info on PPIs. You should check in with your physician Apparently when i was moved up to the highest dose/highest frequency they didnt want that to continue indefinitely. They prefer to opt for revisions to solve the problem completely before other complications start.

Yes, I am on liquid Carafate 4 times a day for the treatment of marginal ulcers in my anastomosis. (I had RNY gastric bypass. ) Ive had no problems with it. I've been on it for 5 weeks, with no end in sight! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

I believe so. When I had the Gastric Sleeve about 10 years ago, I went from 105 kgs to 60 kgs. Weight snuck back on after 7-8 years though, and I was often hungry after this due to the reflux I had. I no longer have reflux and believe I will now get down to about 65-70 kgs weight and be able to retain that due to the bypass. But of course everyone’s story is different and you need to decide for yourself.

Questions about wls
Cher in NYC replied to jennifer47's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon does not operate on smokers. I had to quit at least 30 days before my surgery date. With the gastric bypass, I had to commit to never smoking another cigarette again. They stated I could expect a 100% complication rate if I start smoking again after RNY GB. With the sleeve, smoking is highly discouraged of course but it’s effects on the surgery are not as known. This is what I was told by my surgeon, the advice you get may vary based on your surgeon. -

Revision Lapband to RNY
SlimChickadee replied to Lady B 925's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
No worries, I am still waiting approval, yes. My Surgeon informed me d/t all the scar tissue from the lapband, he does the removal and sleeve is not an option we go straight to the bypass 3mths after the removal to allow healing. Just not happy about going under twice but I want to do what's safe and I trust my doctor to know what's best for me! You look amazing! -

Hope I can make the right choice, sleeve or bypass....It's looking more like bypass due to my GERD. [emoji37] Sent from my XT1565 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision Lapband to RNY
SlimChickadee replied to Lady B 925's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had terrible GERD and like you I would wake up coughing and as if I aspirated some. My doctor's visit, he removed the 4cc out of my band the highest I have ever had was 7ccs (banded in 2009) and now I am able to sleep without any waking up coughing and with one pillow not 2 or 3 for a wedge. Just waiting on approval to have lapband removed and revision to RNY. Many prayers for you! -
Anthem BCBS PPO, How long did approval take?
SlimChickadee replied to LindseeNohan's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have highmark as well and mine was submitted I hope to think June 3rd when I called for my barium swallow report. I was told they would contact my insurance for approval, they already confirmed it would pay 90% of the removal and revision surgeries. So, I am anticipatingly (if such a word) waiting! I would like to make preparations and like others start my liver shrinking diet. I was told to even do the liver shrinking diet for the removal of my lapband!#stillwaitingapprovalinTN
