Journey just starting!
SDL31 replied to HoustonTexanFan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do 6 months as well. The first 3 months felt like forever, then after month 3, time flew by. My first appt was 2/24 and my surgery is 8/6. I used the time to help prepare myself mentally and read as much as I could. -
Where do I even start?

Hey there! According to the LapBand website, you qualify for LapBand if you have a BMI of at least 40, OR you have a BMI of 35 with at least one obesity-related health condition, OR you are at least 100 pounds overweight. Also, I've been hearing on the news recently that they're trying to lower the BMI requirement so that people that are less overweight will qualify for surgery. I think the easiest way to figure out if you qualify for the surgery would be to set up an appointment with a physician; he or she will know what the requirements are. The first step that was required by my physician was to attend a LapBand seminar. I don't know if this is a requirement for everyone or if it was just my surgeon, but if there are seminars available to you, I definitely recommend that you attend one. I found the seminar to be very helpful and informative. Next, I set up the initial consultation with my surgeon. I met with his physician assistant first and then with him. Basically it was just to get to know each other a little bit, discuss the surgery, make sure I knew what I was getting into. Then there are the things that are required by the insurance company, which varies from company to company, as I understand it. For my insurance company(Blue Cross Blue Shield New Jersey) there is a 6 month diet you have to do before they will approve you for the surgery. I'm on month 5 right now, but we're going to send in my paperwork early because my surgeon heard they were approving some people earlier than 6 months. I also had to get a letter from my primary doctor saying that it would be good for me to get the surgery, I've been overweight for X amount of time, blah blah blah. Last week I had my psychological evaluation, which I was so freaked out about, but it was a piece of cake. Next week I'm meeting with a nutritionist to discuss the things that I'm eating now, the things I should be eating, the things I can and can't eat after surgery, etc. After I've done that we'll send my paperwork to BCBS and pray that they approve me quickly. Haha. I think that, generally, those are the steps that need to be taken. I hope I haven't left anything out. Good luck on your journey! If you have any other questions or you just want a friend to talk to, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me! :] -
I see my regular doctor this week, but I see Dr Vaughn next week. I'm beyond excited and hope something can be done. I'm only 28, standing 5'3", and weighing in at 300+lbs! My doctor and I have done everything, and I still can't lose weight!

Getting protein in after surgery?
lsereno replied to mnbsleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the best luck with unjury Protein powders. Seemed to cause less gas and diarrhea in the first couple of weeks. Lynda -
Never apologize for questions! I like FAGE Greek yogurt, plain or vanilla. I also like the Yoplait 100 Greek Yogurts. I just try to find on that's easy on the sugars I have tried the Muscle Milk drinks, and like them pretty much. But, I have a dairy and whey allergy, so I cannot have them every day. (I can tolerate Greek yogurts and some cheeses, but no milk.) So, I use GNC Pro Performance Egg Protein powder. My nut gave me high marks on this one when we discussed my need to find a non-whey based protein powder. As for coffee...every doctor has a different idea of when/if you can add it back in. So, I would find out what your plan states. I had to ask/beg my doc to let me start it back just shy of 3 months post-op. Even then, it's not every day, and it's only one cup per day. But, that's my choice, not his. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

Wow, I can imagine you would have mixed emotions over that. All in all, though, what a joyous surprise. You do still get to plan for a new life! A brand new precious life that has begun and will be making an appearance in about 9 months or so! <3 -
Tell me why the band is good or bad?
coolcrystal replied to CHER123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 22 pounds from my pre-op diet (South Beach) to my first fill which was exactly 4 weeks out from surgery. Even though you don't have a fill, your band is swelled from 1-2 weeks, so it was like having a fill in. My doc primed me with 3cc for my surgery, so I had restriction for the first two weeks which helped with the weightloss. From my first fill to my second fill I lost 6 pounds in three weeks. And from there I have averaged 5-8 pounds a month.. a great healthy weightloss, but I prefer not to be too tight to where I can't eat healthy foods in small portions. In MY opinion, when people say they've only lost 3-4 pounds in several months.. they aren't doing it right.. period.. they need to get honest with themselves. I have a friend who is going through this right now and she sits around eating pizza.. Pasta... chinese buffetts... chips and all sorts of crap and it's because she's scared to go get a fill because she doesn't want them knowing what she's been eating.. well, if you don't go get the fills, you will not be successful , unless you are one of those rare people who never need fills.. but those people are pretty rare. Anyway, this happens a lot.. people get off the bandwagon, don't get their fills and slip away, and then later blame the band... the band is the last thing that should be blamed... if the doctor doesn't talk to them about these things.. then it is their fault and the banded person's fault. My doctor told me up front.. if you gain weight or are scared to come, don't! we won't be mean.. we will just try to get you back where you need to be. Disclaimer: there are other reasons for no weight loss.. leak in band.. band slippage.. just wanting to throw that out there for folks who this has happened to, but a simple barium swallow can bring this to light. To me, my band is my little miracle. I have tried so much stuff and it never worked,. I was addicted to breads and greasy crap. Fast food... pasta... I have NO desire to eat those things anymore.. none.. every now and again I treat myself to half a shake and because I needed my fill I got today I ate some naughty sweet stuff recently and luckily it didn't affect me very much... BAM, get the fill.. happy again.. no cravings.. Sorry for the long response. -
I'm on week 2 of pureed also. Sleeved 6/26/2012.

Absolutely NOT! It was the best thing I ever did! Friday is the first day of the rest of your life. I had my surgery on Dec and I'm down over 50 pds and 3 pant sizes . I feel the best I have felt in years . It's amazing to me how much energy I have. The first 3 weeks are the hardest and then it gets easy every day after that. Good luck and just be positive. Keep us posted .

The reason you are probably snacking so much is because you are not getting your Protein. It is that dense protein from food that will fill you up and keep you full. I went through this as well right around the same time. My nut suggested 2 bites of protein for every 1 bite of good carbs like vegetables and fruit. 3 meals a day. If you get hungry in between which should not yet be the case but it is possible, try drinking 8 oz. of milk for your snack. Milk turns to a solid filling you up and provides protein. You might even try fair life milk which has added protein to it. This will help you get to your protein goal. You also should ask yourself am I really hungry or am I dehydrated? Dehydration causes the exact symptoms of hunger. When you get that feeling in between meals, drink Water or crystal light until it goes away. If that feeling comes back right away, drink that cup of milk. You are likely dealing with head hunger or dehydration.

Hi Cervidae, My drain came out the next day while still in the hospital at the same time they removed the catheter. My instructions are to change the bandage every day for the week leading up to my follow up appointment. I've been told to walk 3-4 times a day and I've been doing three. My walk is like an old woman's shuffle right now but improving. I take the pain meds every 4 hours around the clock. I thought this would keep me up but I've been waking up to pee every 2 hours anyway. The first thing I ate was a sugar free popsicle. I had three small bites and was done. Next I had about 3 tablespoons of broth and was full. So far that's all I've eaten. The feeling of fullness is very different but I'm trying to pay attention so I don't vomit the first week as that can set back progress. I'm tired and nap day and night with no full sleep of the 6-8 hour variety. The thing I've found hardest is getting in and out of bed. I'm using the log roll technique which helps relieve some but not all the pressure on my stomach muscle. I won't lie. It hurts. But I'm getting better at it.

@@francheskii I couldn't agree more with Djmohr! We were taught at Mayo to have 3 meals and 2 high Protein Snacks every day. That's what I've done and at 5 months post-op it's working just fine. I'm never hungry and get an average of 120-125 grams of protein in every day while staying between 800-850 calories. I've included a page out of my "Nutritional Guidelines" book given to us which breaks down every stage of the diet. Hope it helps. Congrats and keep on your successful weight loss journey

Musings & Questions - mostly nutrition related
KristenLe replied to becomingmandikaye's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
#1 - I would think you would have the same NUT through out. I find they often have some different advice/opinions. #2 - it is so you are mindfully eating and taking your time and paying attention to when you are full. I was told the same - however I don't even have a dining room so that's not happening. Just be mindful when eating. #3 - I was given a list of preferred shakes and they were all low calorie - high protein - low carb. I wouldn't go with Boost. My NUT told me not to worry about calories right now and to concentrate on protein and fluids. #4 - I don't have much concrete yet either. I'm assuming I'll get a manual closer to surgery. Ask questions - I found my NUT responsive to questions but didn't give me the info unsolicited. -
Hello and welcome.... I was banded 2.5 weeks ago and I know what you mean about the success/failure thing....I feel it too. I have had a food addiction for a long time and i'm getting it under control now...I too have depression and anxiety and take meds. I see a psych and a therapist. I go to the lap band support groups and they help me a lot....What i do at night to stay away from eating is I go into the chat room on here...lots of support and fun. it keeps me outta the kitchen and not thinking too much about food.... Take Care, Meg

Woo-Hoo! Another Visit To Nsvtown
Lissa replied to BenisaMartim4's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can definitely vouch for don't buy too many of one size. I bought a pair of size 20 jeans that are already too loose on me and, even with hot Water washing, are loose coming out of the dryer now. I'm going to skip the 18s, since the ones I tried on yesterday are barely tight and buy a pair of 16s in a week or so. But, I can now find jeans at Goodwill rather than needing to buy at regular retail! I'm really ticked off about one thing, though. I've been really working hard on the bike and walking, so now I have no clue what size undies to buy! It's not like I can go in and try them on! -
Hi, New to the site with lots of ?'s......
Kat817 replied to Minnesotalady's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't know if you watched the Oprah show on GB and addiction a couple of weeks ago, it may have explained some of your sisters issues. I feel the lap band reduces the odds, but does not eliminate them. The problem as I understood it is that one of the reasons we are as overweight as we are is a food addiction. Now if you have an addictive personality, then when you canno longer use food to soothe the demons that led to the addiction, then many turn to alcohol, or whatever and simply change the addiction. I have no idea concerning the divorce, except losing weight finally after many tries, as most of us have gone through, is very free-ing. It empowers you to make changes you had only thought about before. Not knowing why she is doing these things, I would hate to judge any of it. Lap band is less drastic, and not such a sudden loss. It does require more work. But in my opinion it works for me because there is not anything I cannot have at least a little bit of. I was told with bypass sweets were not something I could eat, and I don't do well being told I can't have something, it just makes me want it more!!! Now I can eat some without going overboard. Are you close enough to your sister to discuss these things with her? Go to the seminar, and research all you can!!! This has been a blessing to me, I hope you find the answers you are looking for!!! Hey guys! I'm just over 6 weeks postop, on soft foods for another week or so, and suddenly I'm finding that everything I try to eat tastes disgusting. Even things I had no trouble with last week, like scrambled eggs, tuna salad, ground meat and beans--all of it makes me want to gag! I'm having trouble eating enough because I can't get down more than half of my meal, even though my stomach itself isn't protesting. I wanted to cut back on Protein shakes, but I need them to reach the protein goal at this point. Is this some sort of weird psychological thing, or is there a fixable reason this is happening? Thanks

Starting pre-op diet and surgery prep next Monday!
MamaTo3inNH posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've got one week of food freedom, going to have a few food funerals and generally enjoy my last week of being fat. Isn't that an oxymoron? Anyway. Pre op diet starts Monday. And with that comes TONS of housework to a - get my house super clean and organized before I go out of commission and b - take my mind off my growling belly Any tips for getting the house (and three kids and hubby!!) ready to fend for themselves for 4-5 days? I'm freaking out... Hubby isn't really up to the task so I want to make things as easy as possible. All laundry will be caught up, I will have the younger two outfits put together for a week's time. Aside from clothing, I can't figure out what else I can do? He doesn't cook, I am going to make a pot of chop suey and make sure we have Mac n cheese cups and plenty of bread and Nutella and fruit cups for the girls... Any other helpful hints from mamas out there? -
I had GBS ON 12/10, surgery weight 228lbs, now 214. I have not list anymore weight since 22 Dec, 214. I'm drinking plenty of water, I get in at least 100 grams of protein a day and walk mile each day. I'm still in the liquid stage. My next appreciate is on the 29th. What am I doing wrong?

I am three weeks from surgery and start my liquids tomorrow. Any suggestions or tricks to keep me on the wagon during this journey. I am both excited and nervous about making it through these next few weeks.
