Hi all!!! This is the beginning of my Journey....Well I started this path back in March although I've been thinking about wls for a couple years. I never had considered it before. I thought it wasn't for me, it was too risky. I was that fat girl for so long that didn't feel fat. I had energy, I was fairly active. But then I got high blood pressure, diabetes and now my cholesterol is high too. With my sleep study I had to have for wls of course I was told I had apnea too. Let's not forget the aches and pains in my hips, knees, back, etc. Plus my energy level has dropped. I could literally nap anywhere! And to top it all off, I just don't FIT in this world. Everywhere I go is a thought process, frustration, worry, embarrassment. My surgery was originally scheduled for October 2nd. In the meantime, I was dealing with "feminine issues." I had to have an ultrasound which determined I had a "mass" that needed to be surgically removed. The plan was to do this a few weeks after my gastric by-pass and I set it all up. So I started my liquid diet and reached day 12. Then I had my pre-op appointment. I told my doctor that I needed to have this other surgery afterwards. He said No, it has to be done first, in case the mass were cancerous, I couldn't be in a malnourished state that gastric by-pass puts you into. I had a feeling going in that I would hear something like that. Well I was happy because I could eat again for awhile. I had the mass removed about a week and a half later. No cancer! I think that surgery really helped mentally prepare me for the "big one" and it's not hanging over my head anymore. So now I'm back on my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. It's just as miserable as it was the first time. But I'm glad to be back on track and am sooo ready for this!!

I don't mean to scare you at all - but someone posted on here a few weeks ago about their dear friend who just went to get the lapband - and died from a heart attack while undergoing anesteisa - again - just wanted to be honest with what I know - I will try to find the link - it was very sad.

The countdown is on....11 days to surgery! I have my pre-op appointment tomorrow~it can't come soon enough! I am so excited! I was instructed to do the "slim fast" shake diet or drink two shakes a day and eat one meal. I have found a chocolate shake that I actually like. I mix it with skim milk and ice. Tomorrow I have decided to add a little bit of vanilla yogurt. We will see how that goes. I have been a little emotional today. I am not quite sure why. I think I spent tooooo much time worrying and thinking about the surgery. I have my fears but its a very important step that I have to take. I am so sick of being unhappy with my weight. This is a step in the right direction. Thank you for all the blogs. I really enjoy reading everyone's views and everyone's experiences. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate your support and positive words!

Have you been sleeved in Alabama
klus263 replied to soon to be skinny's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not sure how many sleeves he has done but he is doing more of these I think then bypass and bands now. I was only in the hospital for one day-insurance approved one day. I was at the hospital 5:30 am for surgery and left the next morning by around 10 am. I was off work for one week-I have a sit down customer service job working from home. They have a website http://www.alabamawls.com/ you can check out. If you want to send me a private message you can email me at kelly.stricker@att.net. -
Hi: You may want to post your question on makemeheal.com There are alot more plastic surgery patients there. Personally, when I had my tummy tuck I had some lipo too. I had to wear a compression garment for a long time. I'm pretty sure that is standard practice with a tummy tuck, not sure about with just lipo. When my surgeon did the lipo she did it in the mons area too and that part was very painful for a couple of weeks. Hope all is well with you. Sue

Great Attitude! You are right that the band is only a tool and we must make the right choices. I too have found that I must exercise the rest of the weight off. I am not worried too much about the last 70+lbs or so as I know that they will eventually drop and that this is not a race. Having goals helps us to stay on track. I have decided that to kick the plateau I have been on for the last few months I needed get a kick in the butt and have decided to low carb/South Beach. When going back to read my Band rules from the hospital it says to eat Protein, veggies & if still hungry good carbs..I have chosen to eat protein and veggies and eliminate most of the carbs. It has worked for me because I slashed the plateau in the last few weeks by losing 6lbs. Water aerobics have been my best friend and I love it...I miss it when I can't go and let me tell you I try not to it must be something important to do so. Again, great attitude and keep the great work. You are doing just great. Cindy

Hi Dar and welcome to LBT..you have come to the right place for support. We are like on big extended happy family here. Lots of love around this place. As for me I felt great the day after surgery but as others have said we all are different. I was able to feel my port under my skin if I was to push down on it..it did not stick out or anything. Every doctor has their own post op diet they want you to follow so when you are able to eat solids is up to your doctor but I can not imagine it being longet then 3 weeks. Most have 1-2 weeks of liquids then a week of mushy foods then onto solid foods. Best of luck to you

Jdillon congrats I like your attitude and the way you count, I have 5 weeks and counting.

Pre Op Milk And Yoghurt Diet
harmony11 replied to mistressofmagic's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every doctor seems to have a different protocol. Mine calls for NO milk products for the two weeks leading up to it. Crazy how they are all different. Good luck with your journey! -
yeah, have been for 13 days now - making nice soups and liquefying them. Will be on liquids for another week and a bit, then on to mushy foods.

New, Scared And Excited..
Bandista replied to DaddyMarie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there, I am newly-banded -- it will be two weeks tomorrow. I am 52 and spent two decades seriously struggling with weight issues. So debilitating in every way! I was 248 and am down 20 pounds, some from the pre-op diet. A pound or so a week is not slow to me, that seems very healthy. I'm in this for the long run. Chose the band because I need assistance I dimming my appetite. Did not want something as drastic as a sleeve, etc. -- I like the idea that if it is ever necessary my band can be removed. And it's adjustable so I can keep working with my surgeon to get it tweaked so it's just right for me at a given time. Very happy! Good luck on your journey. I learned so much here reading posts, asking questions, etc. Best wishes for your healthy future! -
Surgery tomorrow to reattach tubing to band!
JennyC724 replied to JennyC724's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was going in for my first fill when it was discovered via fluroscopy (they do all fills that way at my practice) that the tubing ends were disconnected. I had never heard anything like it, but there was another surgery done the same day as mine, right after me, and she had the same thing!! Go figure! Thankfully recovery has been MUCH easier than with the band initially and I have lost 9 pounds this first week!! YAY!! Because I got a fill during the surgery, thank the gods of weight loss!! LOL Interestingly enough, the tubing was poking my just under my ribcage on the right side, and when I told my doctor, he said it wasn't all the way over there but I knew it WAS, and it turns out that it WAS because it was seperated!!! It hurt at times, especially when I hunched over like when I was sitting in the floor with the kids!!! I'm just SO HAPPY that it's OVER!!! :smile2: -
Diva, If your husband is looking for another hospital closer to you, have him try Lahey (as we talked about). They don't require a 6 week program. You go one day for your Psch. testing, your physical, meet the nutritionist and meeting about the band. It's a one day program. From 9 - 4. Then you have to go to two support groups.. Then you'll be on your way to be banded, with approval of course. I'm trying to talk my husband into this as well. I think he gained my pregnancy weight and then some. He's gained 60 pounds in two years. I've gained 50 with my pregnancy and bed rest, and I have taking a little off but not enough. It's so funny to read that those with the band eat less, so their hubby's do too. It just goes to show that we act on others inpulses to eat. If he eats ice cream, you've never thought about it.. but he's eating it.. then I will too. I DO THAT! TOOO FUNNY:heh:

Dieting should result in 2 pounds a week weight loss. That's what the medical community says a person can safely loose. The band is supposed to help us do that. I'm lucky if I lose .5 pounds a week... and I'm happy with that.

Hi Y'all, Ok so my doc says that w/ the band and the right restriction you should be loosing 2-4 lbs a week. I'm 8 1/2 months post op and have lost 70lbs but, i'm not loosing any where near that amount of weight a week. I don't think I need another fill.....I don't eat much and when I do i'm in big trouble...slimming, major hicups etc. My question to y'all is does that amount of weight loss seem a bit extreme and am I the only one who has experienced a slow down in weight loss over time? The first 40lbs or so just fell off but, now I gotta work at it a little harder then I did in the beginning. Just curious to see what y'all thoughts were. I always like, and listen to the advice of fellow bandsters. 1/24/07......252 lbs pant size 20/22 10/11/07.....182 lbs pant size 10

Sounds like you're experiencing the infamous, hated, but mostly unavoidable fickle band restriction. You really need to talk about it with your surgeon, but since you have to wait a few weeks to see her, I'll give you the benefit of my own experience (plus my medical degree from the University of Nowhere). First of all, the sushi. I love it (and sashimi) too, but sushi rice is even stickier than long grain rice, and sticky stuff is not band-friendly. The fact that you've been burping for an hour tells me that your esophagus, band, and stomach can't deal with it right now. Secondly, I've had fills take 2 weeks to kick in. It would be so nice to have your body respond to fills in a predictable fashion, but your body is subject to dozens of processes that can affect your experience of restriction. Like hydration, medication, illness, allergies, stress, time of day, time of month, etc. etc. etc. I have a suspicion that your body is giving you some hints about your last fill and you're just having some trouble interpreting them. That's not a criticism. I've been there, done that. So I suggest that you lay off the sushi and pay very close attention to how you feel before, during, and after you eat until your next appointment with your surgeon. If at any time you experience reflux, night cough, regurgitation, stuck episodes, sliming, foaming, or other symptoms and eating problems that disrupt your life, call your surgeon. If you experience severe chest pain and/or cannot swallow liquids, call your surgeon and then go to the nearest ER. I know what I just said must sound scary, so my next piece of advice will sound contradictory. Take a few deep breaths and remember that stress (including the stress you impose on yourself through worrying) almost always makes everything feel worse.

I'm not sure what to tell you. I am tight in the morning buy I can drink just fine. If I eat I have to be slow and chew very well. Usually after a couple of hours I am fine. I seem to snack more at night. I've lost 71 lbs and have hit a major slow down. It took me 3 weeks to loose 1 pound.

Congrats! Thats my 1 year anniversary too! I love my band and it was just what I needed to get this weight off! I started using myfitnesspal.com to track what I eat and it has helped me lose over 7 pounds the last 4 weeks. I was overeating Yogurt! too many carbs.

My sweety and I are going out on Saturday for Valentines Day. He's letting me choose the restaurant. I'm three weeks post surgery, no fills yet, and on regular food (just small portions). Any suggestions? Sashimi is probably the safest bet, but I had that this weekend, and honestly thought it wasn't nearly as good as sushi.

Don't listen to the negative advice, and definitely stay off the threads about everyone's horror stories. I made the same mistake. Got me all freaked out, and doubting my decision. Three weeks post band and I'm feeling pretty much back to normal, and down 20 lbs. It feels scary but its worth it!
-
It at least breaks up how boring it can get drinking water and protein shakes. I went through a ton of them for the first few weeks.

Wow, you're looking great already, and just a few weeks after surgery, you're amazing!!! ROTFLMAO, thanks again for the grins and giggles!! (((HUGS))) Cindy

Troubled bandster needs advise (may be a little TMI for some readers)
JWhipple replied to JWhipple's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh my freaking head - will this NEVER end? So, she filed the divorce, moved out, divorce is finalized on 6/29 , and now she's begging me to take her back!!!!! She realizes now that she made a huge mistake, that this never would have happened had she have stayed on her medications the way she was supposed to, and says that the business about the boyfriend was all BS to make me sign off on the divorce without resisting. Don't get me wrong, I still have feelings for her, but the trust is COMPLETELY gone. There have been too many lies told to me that I found out the truth about. On a positive note, I have a job lined up now that will start the first week of next month, ironically, with the same company that I worked for before, but with a 40% pay reduction (it's better than unemployment!). -

Some of your sleeping is from the Prozac and some from the depression. Trust me when I say that one day when it kicks in you'll wake up and feel like you can handle life again. Don't look for that drug induced high where life is a ball because that's not how it works. But you'll be able to handle things better and find some peace. Coming from a woman that is getting close to celebrating her 25th anniversary next week (but went through 2 very bad marriages before that) if they move into the other guy's house, they move in all the way. Your ED is not the problem the problem is she was too much of a coward to admit that she was on the prowl. You're so right in the fact that the ED could have been worked through. That's what strong marriages are made of. Go to your councelor and also go to some support groups for your band. Preferrably on she won't show up at. Work on your self-esteem and not why she felt this way or that. Trust me when I say that it won't matter how she felt or why she did something. What matters is how you are going to handle your life from now on. You are obviously a proud person (marine) and so be proud of yourself. I didn't find my DH until I quit looking and decided to live my life for me. It was the greatest decision I've made.
