Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

Not to be an IF pusher, but for me IF is easier and much more sustainable than something like keto What I like about IF Flexibility- I can stop and start whenever I want. I can do 20:4, 18:6, 16:8, or just not IF at all. I can’t really ‘fail’ at it. If I’m too hungry, I eat, no big deal Ease - it’s the one diet that gets easier as time goes on, IME. My body gets trained to not be hungry in the morning. If I do feel hungry, pushing liquids usually makes it go away. If it doesn’t, I just eat & don’t worry about IF that day. But the longer I IF the easier it becomes

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

Gosh, idk if I could do IF. I get hannnnnngry. I’ve looked into Keto, but kinda want to stick with just trying to stick to/adopt a healthy lifestyle vs something I’m unlikely to stick to long term.. if that makes sense?
  3. I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. It's always a comment from my parents, or my old doctor saying that I should eat more veggies and salads and run more. Or me trying fad diet after fad diet, or trying a "lifestyle change" diet like Noom or Weight watchers or Keto... but I always hover between 280 and 220 pounds. I remember once, I broke past my 220 pound curse... I got to 200 pounds even! "Finally! Progress!" I thought to myself, but a little voice in the back of my head came around. It was all the doctors I had ever seen come to torture me. "For a person my size, gender, and age. I should be between 100-120 pounds". Ok, so time to change up the routine, and try to lose more weight. I took weight loss pills, exercised harder, but the weight loss just stalled. No matter how much I tried I could not break the barrier. So. I am taking the plunge into weight loss surgery. I spoke with my PCP, and he said felt it would benefit me. It will help with my insulin resistance that is due to my Pcos (polycystic ovary syndrome), and lower my risk for diabetes and heart problems (both are health issues from my parents). I found a surgeon in the Tampa, FL area and I have my very first appointment with him in a couple weeks... so why do I feel like a failure? Why is it that I feel like I can try a new way to lose the weight on my own without having surgery? Why am I against the surgery? Why does it feel like I'm failing when I haven't even started? I just want to be healthy... I don't even care about being skinny... I just want to be able to tie my shoes without becoming winded. Or go to a theme park without becoming tired in an hour. Do I have many, many questions? Yes. But signing up in this forum has helped answer some of them... do I worry about what I'll look like after the surgery? Yes. But that does not outweigh my health... and I know this! But why on earth do I still want to cancel the appointment and try, for the millionth time, to lose the weight on my own? Why do I feel like giving up when I haven't even started? Am I the only one who feels like this? I can't be alone in these thoughts, right? ... truthfully I probably should save this discussion for the bariatric therapist; but I can't stop thinking about it... How did you all do it? How did you guys push past the intrusive thoughts?

This is basically a variation of my recipes I developed on Fluffy Chix Cook years ago. It always aggravates me when cooks don't give the inspiration link who inspired their version. Losing weight Post Op ........

Congratulations on your weight loss. You have done phenomenal. Is there a reason you feel you need to lose 100+ pounds? You can lose weight years out. Keep things realistic and long term sustainable. Make short term goals of five-pound increments. Give yourself a year of being consistent on your plan and make a goal of living and eating healthy. A healthy lifestyle should not be diet hell. I’m five years out. Weight loss is slow. My surgery restriction is less. I can hold more food volume (My stomach is not back to full size) I have had to find ways to fill the extra stomach space, keep hunger at a minimum and stay within my weight loss calories and macros. Sorry for the long response. Get some advice for your dietician first. I’m no expert. All I can offer is what works for me. You may have to tweak things to find your own weight loss mojo. Basics: Follow your plan, Log and weight your food, hydrate, drink 30 mins after you eat, exreccise/activity. The only reason we gain weight is eating over your weight loss/maintaining calories and macros. Ask your dietician for meal plan or research one you feel you will stick with. (Bariatric basics, keto, intermittent fasting, whole 30, paleo, low carb, vegan. The list goes on) Whatever meal plan you decide to follow log your food. (myfitnespal) or another food log app. Do you know what calories your body loses weight at? We are all different. Sometimes the numbers change years out. Using myfitnesspal app - Start with 1200 calories. You can dial your calories up or down by 100 to find the zone that works for your body. Set your protein, carbohydrates, and fats goals to fit the diet plan you choose. If you need help, ask. Real sugar, processed food and extra carbs cause craving and hunger. Detox off them. Get temptation out of the house – go shopping for things on your plan – Research some bariatric recipes to keep food flavorful. A few links Keep healthy options for sweet and salty cravings on hand. With your protein and other items allowed on your plan eat as much veggies until full to fill the extra sleeve space. The veggies will help keep your calories low. Depending on your plan use plant based or low glycemic carbs (sweet potato, brown rice, whole wheat) Stay within your carbohydrate goal. Low glycemic keeps your blood sugar from spiking. Watermelon

It didn't affect anything for me and at the time it was in season. My Bariatric team didn't agree with the keto and wanted us to have veggies and fruits in our diets, they said keto would mess with our metabolism later on when we did eat those things later. Everyone has different views I chose to go with the Drs. and nutritionist for my plan.

    Chinese Food Puree

Thank you for this. Before my RNY on 7/25, I had spent 15 months on a version of keto. There were 2 critical things about my food choices: meet the nutrition requirements/macro limitations and EASY. I tried to turn food into a non-event. My family asked how I could eat/drink same things over & over. I was not looking for food, I was looking for fuel. Not going to lie though when odd urge struck me on keto, I'd look up recipes but if they didn't fit my target macros then I gave them a hard pass. I know youngest daughter thinks the way I was eating was too limited, boring, etc. I HAVE to have 'EASE' & convenience due to my work schedule & honestly do not want to spend too much time on cooking, food prep, etc. I DO want to know tips/tricks, etc. that are in line with what we should be doing the 1st couple of mos, to ensure that things like chicken, etc. go down smoothly (add broth, etc.) I was so torn on other thread re: Dr. Brian/Bryan? But I think none of us really..wants to blow this HUGE change we've made to our bodies. Most have heard about honeymoon period, the X amt of mos where you lose majority and how we can "break it or make it". I feel I'm going to have to get back in with a therapist as with all addictions, when you are "new in recovery"..In AA & NA they tell you to stay away from people, places and things you used to associate with as you don't have good chance at staying clean/sober if you repeat old behavior..even if you don't relapse. I can't afford a 'food relapse'. I need safety. Was tempted to check out recipes, but I kept reading different input & it brought me back to where my mind had been planning to go...which is for ME, I must KISS (must be simple). And I have to be accountable to stay in my "lane" dr prescribed. As I'm not 30 anymore, I can't afford for this opportunity to get sacrificed in a sudden urge to search for, what would be for me, distractions. Heck, some of you know due to last min dr. change, I've been doing full liquids (pre-op & post-op) for 49 days as of today & by time my dr let's me move to pureed, it will be 54 days. I had felt sorry for myself a few times but I'm going to change that by telling all of you how I absolutely rocked the liquids stage...I did it! I'm still doing it! Just to clarify, I feel we can find flavor & variation in things as we go down this road, but just like in recovery, we are warned to keep main focus of 1st year solely on self. No new relationships, etc. I've been clean for 30+ years now & let me tell you,a food addiction makes getting clean/sober look like child's play for ME personally. Glad we can all talk about this. I have to understand too that what 1 person can eat/not eat & successfully lose weight on does not make it true for me. Think I will keep training wheels on for now.
  9. Hi, I started with a BMI of 36, I have/had a lot of health related issues and was diagnosed with type 1.5 diabetes and my mother had major complications from diabetes so I wanted to do whatever I could to stop it as best as I could. So for me the risks of surgery were nothing compared to the medical conditions I was developing and had. I had my sleeve surgery 7/8/2019 and within a week after surgery I was off my blood pressure medication. I am feeling better and it is so much easier now without being hungry all the time. It was so worth it! I think if you weigh the long term risks of being your weight now and the risk of the surgery you will have your answer. I was required to attend an informational meeting and a support group before my surgery and they have one every month at the hospital and it is free. Maybe ask your surgeon and do a google search for them in your area. I honestly would not wait. My surgeon explained how hard it was to not lose the weight but to keep it off and the huge percentage of people that put it back on and more. Long story short he explained when your stomach is a certain size and it’s empty your hormones are kicking in making you hungry and wanting to eat. So That’s why so many fail at keeping the weight off. I did keto lost 25lbs then put that back on and a little more my Dr. told me “You just did more harm than good” that was the day of the diabetes and I made up my mind for surgery. So anyways, Make the change and keep moving forward Best of Luck to you!

    Reboot?

Eat high protein...almost like a keto diet. Protein decreases hunger. It'll take a little bit to detox off of carbs and sugar but it's a must if you want to drop the weight. The sleeve is our tool not a magic fix. Excersize too if you can. Walking a couple miles total a day helps. HW = 360 SW = 292 GW = 220 reached 3/7/18 CW = 210 @ 6'5" 150 pounds lost! [emoji106]

    Pre-op struggles

Absolutely many have/had a problem with it. I changed dr's @ the last minute so I ended up doing almost a full 30 days of an almost completely liquid diet. I thought the first 13 days with one dr was hard...but man, starting it back up again - full disclosure, the 'new pre-op' date I got with final dr still allowed me 3 weeks to do 'his full liquid plan' but I had a DAY break on 4th of July! I was honestly impressed that I did not gorge..and yeah, I'll use that word as I have done that before. Had just lunch and dinner from 4th of July. No desserts. I had been doing keto for 15 months taking maybe a day off every other month as my body would start to stall and just hang onto the weight so I'd shake it up a bit. However, all I can remember is the LONG 30 days. If I had known up front all of the insurance hassle and scheduling issues that would result from me changing dr's....I would have been freaked at the idea of that long of a pre-op diet. Now I'm post-op and am on Day 12 of yet ANOTHER 3 week post-op liquid diet so I'm roughly on Day 42 (and yeah, I still had that '1 day break') but today my body just seized up on the liquids. I think it is primarily due to working 75 hrs last week when I was only 2 days recovered from my RNY. One thing you have to remember - you are NOT going to be on liquids for life! You are NOT going to be doing pre-op or post-op (first X of weeks depending on your dr) FOREVER. Is it hard to get through? I THINK SO! Is it DOABLE? OH YES! You have hundreds upon hundreds of bariatric friends that are either walking in your same shoes now, have walked in those shoes or who will be walking in those shoes in the near future. Greentealael shared GREAT points about the benefits of the PRE-OP diet most have to follow in some form or another. To be honest by the time I got to..um..Day 19 or 20 of liquid pre-op...I was SO DONE. The ONLY thing that kept be going and refusing to cheat is my BMI is so high, I COULD literally not afford physically, mentally or emotionally to have my dr call off surgery because it would be too dangerous to operate. I also knew I didn't want to ever do any more days of pre-op then I already had to. POST-OP I'm living through...and it has not been easy except for first 2 days...but I remember that this is helping my body to heal..helping our new pouches adjust. I've read what happens when someone pushes the envelope or even more bizarrely..they seem to have not been given a 'post-op' diet..and I know I will make it one way or another to PUREED FOODS. NEVER thought I'd say I was fantasizing about pureed foods, but fantasize I do indeed! You are at the right place, you did the absolute right thing and as a person also known for her discipline when she puts her mind to something, that means YOU HAVE THIS - IT IS YOURS FOR THE TAKING!!
  13. My insurance only covers it if your BMI is over 35 with comorbidities or over 40 without. My personal opinion is that, barring any serious medical issues from those 35lbs, I wouldn't have my stomach removed and make SUCH a major lifestyle change for it. I should have considered it at maybe 75lbs too heavy or 100. Instead I waited to almost 150lbs overweight... but it honestly wouldn't (and didn't) cross my mind 35lbs overweight... and I personally would not have done it even if it was suggested to me. I would have told that person they were insane for suggesting I chop out my stomach for 35lbs. I was able to lose 65lbs on my own with keto, and if I stuck to it it would still be off... but I went off the rails, hard. If you can stick to something like keto, maybe try that if you haven't? I would exhaust ALL AVAILABLE OPTIONS. My surgeon's office offers medically managed weight loss for people below the BMI thresh hold. It's the Optifast diet coupled with weight loss medication and a strict routine of followups and accountability. Maybe looked into medically managed weight loss programs?

    July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op

We both had the experal too ! Wrong spelling I’m sure 🤷‍♀️. Those first few days on the low calories you do feel so drained and you’re hormones are nuts and you’re going to feel better I promise but I know it’s hard to believe right now. I have a friend that calls that feeling the Keto flu lol. But I can’t remember exactly what day post op it was but FINALLY my body adjusted to the low calories and it feels normal now. Granted you get tired faster during activities than you would on higher intake but your day to day activities feel a lot more normal. I feel ya on the poop probs mine are far apart too. I take stool softeners to keep it from getting constipated type pain but still lots of days in between. we took vitamins from day 1 except for calcium we start that Tuesday at 1 mo PO. Dont apologize for venting this **** is HARD and a huge adjustment and sometimes we all just need a moment to whine! The metal cravings were BRUTAL for me at first. Downright depressing and seeing other people eat made me want to cry. That part gets better too for me it was around 14 days post op. Not saying I don’t have cravings anymore but not like before. Now it’s more like hey I’m down 37 lbs, I’m in ketosis, I’m killing this, is this thing I’m craving truly worth going allll the way backwards? I’ll try to talk myself out of it and have something else. Craving pizza? For lunch I might do laughing cow with a couple pieces of turkey pepperoni. Stuff like that. Or sometimes I just need to whine to a good friend and get it out! We’re all in this together !

    Just wondering.

From what I've read here and having had 'different surgeries' before, mood swings (hormonal or otherwise) are actually experienced by most although different ppl may process (or not) in other ways. It is very very normal I totally get what you said about everyone going and doing. I posted on another thread lately I feel..super ALONE. My family eats out "because they are uncomfortable" eating around me or as they also say "they don't want ME to be uncomfortable". I'm PEEVED because all they are doing is making it WORSE. I've said that I need to be able to be around food although I'm not inviting them to make all my fave foods and have a buffet either. What they are doing is making me feel more left out than I did before. I feel LONELY. My husband & I would go to dinner once or twice a wk and now that is done so he and my youngest daughter are now going "out". Am NOT begrudging family going out to eat & continuing with their life as I have to keep reminding myself that this..almost quarantine like part of the journey is about keeping ME safe and honestly, I am a week post op myself. I think there is some truth in their comments but there is a load of truth that they are eating foods I already was staying away from (did keto for 15 mos) and eating/drinking too much (not being rude, I was queen of overeating..I think THAT makes them uncomfortable AROUND me maybe? It is hotter than Hades here in TX and I did not do well in extreme heat before surgery and I've got to remember - I just had major surgery. Just made a major change to my body & it has to HEAL. I remind myself that before I know it I'll be able to go 'out again' but there are also temptations there that for now..I choose for myself to avoid. I have stated what I am and am not comfortable with. If someone is making or bringing something around that is tempting. I will move to another room and read a book, play some games...I just started buying jigsaw puzzles cuz it reminds me of my mother. I have found them to be very therapeutic. I come here & read the 'headwork thread', the JULY and now AUGUST challenges greentealael (is that right) posts have been enjoyable even on the days I didn't participate. There is a humor thread that is hysterical. Give yourself a break and a big dose of self love. We are JULY surgery siblings! I've given myself permission to have a good cry and I know there is a big emotion shift of finding new ways to fill up my time besides eating. Sounds like a good time to get to know ourselves better. You know you are amazing and worth it! Remember what a brave thing we just did..as 99% of everyone on here did. We did it because we MATTER!

    💜AUGUST 2019 CHALLENGE💜

Ok, I'm in! Hello August!!! August Stats: 17m PO RNY, 56y F, 5'4", 135lbs, 23BMI (3w PO for emergency internal hernia with twisted gut) Personal Goal: Want to hit 130lbs by August 20th (18m f/up with my surgeon & oncologist & cardioman) Fun Fact: I used to be a very very very fluffy (325lb) low carb keto food blogger and wrote several digital e-cookbooks. My old blog was Fluffy Chix Cook. I also am a freelance graphic artist and work from home, so most days I work in flannel pjs or stretchy soft shorts and tshirts. LOL. And very fuzzy house slippers. Oh, and in my usual 2percenter way, I overslept 30minutes this morning and missed my running cuz I had a rush job due this morning. Now I have to fit it in today...ahhhh Mondays.
  19. Youre all so helpful! I shall defo look at the facebook page for keto diet. If I dont understand diets I get myself in a pickle and try and find a new one.
  20. I am 5'2" tall and 180 lbs, looking for an advice which procedure best and safest. I spoke to my family doctor and suggested the balloon but my worry there, can I maintain my weight after taking the balloon out after 6 months or gain back? I did Keto for 4 months and lost 20 lbs but gained back when I traveled somewhere for 2 weeks as I used to do exercise and cook my keto food. Until I slowly feel that my weight gained back and can't keep my keto routine and exercise. My family doctor says Gastric Sleeve surgery is irreversible and if there is an infection and something wrong or not for me, I can't put it back. And later on, there must be a serious side effect. And now I am here, I don't know what to do. Please drop advise and opinion and encouragement here please!!!!!!!!!

Keto Bagels Recipe These Keto bagels will make you very, very happy! Thanks to the ingenious mozzarella (Fathead) dough, they are gluten free and low in carbs. Course Breakfast Cuisine British Keyword gluten free bagels, keto bagels, low carb bagels Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 20 minutes Total Time 30 minutes Servings 6 Calories 231 kcal Author Katrin Ingredients 1 1/2 cup / 175g shredded mozzarella 1 cup / 100g almond flour extra fine. 1 1/4 cup / 125 g when using ground almonds / almond meal 1 egg, large, beaten 4 tbsp / 50g cream cheese 1 tbsp psyllium husk powder 1 tsp baking powder poppy / sesame seeds optional Instructions Preheat the oven to 180 Celsius / 360 Fahrenheit Melt the mozzarella and cream cheese in the microwave (1 1/2 minutes on high) or in a non stick pan. In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients - almond flour, psyllium husk powder and baking powder. Add dry ingredients plus the beaten egg to the mozzarella. Combine with a spatula, then knead with your hands until you have a smooth dough. Alternatively, mix in a stand mixer or food processor. Form a large ball and cut into 6 segments. Form each segment into a log, lay them down in a circle and pinch the ends together to make bagel shapes. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with poppy seeds or sesame seeds. Bake for ca 20 minutes or until lightly browned on top. Recipe Notes If the dough is sticky, lightly oil your hands. It is easier to handle once it cools. The dough should be room temperature when it goes in the oven. This prevents the bagels from flattening in the oven. The bagel shapes should be tall and the hole a decent size (check my images). When the bagels rise, they also spread a little. This way you ensure your end product looks good. If you're using coarse almond flour / almond meal / ground almonds, increase the amount to 125 g / 1 1/4 cup. The bagels firm as they cool down. They can be reheated in the microwave or lightly toasted. You can store them in the fridge for up to a week or freeze them. 23. Not on my keto! I don't eat a lot of cheese and rarely eat bacon. Both are super calorie dense. So if I eat cheese, it's an ounce (or 2 -- rarely) a day (if that) and it's always the reduced fat, no sugar low carb kind like: Light Cheese Wedges or 2% natural cheeses, or part skim mozzarella. Instead of bacon, I like the Hillshire Farms Naturals Black Forest Ham which is 3 slices for 50 calories and 9g protein and 1g carbs. I eat only protein to my protein specifications and try to target 30g of total carbs (when I'm being good and on plan) and add healthy fat (avocado, nuts, seeds, nut butters, olives, olive oil, avocado oil, butter) to my calorie goal for the day. Total easy peasy. I end up with a ton of veggies and sometimes a little dark berries for that amount and lean dense protein.
  24. You can definitely do lower fat and still do keto type diet. if you are on facebook there are some keto groups for women who have had bariatric surgery. I would do turkey sausage, I try and sub turkey for everything pretty much, for bacon, ground meat, etc. I try to not just snack on cheese but maybe eggs every once and awhile, make lower fat deviled eggs as a snack, they're great with everything but the bagel seasoning! I use fairlife skim milk, it's lower carb and high protein. I hope that helps and makes sense lol
  25. Thanks so much guys! I think you're right I will refer back! That sharing meals thread looks brilliant! I was feeling so low this morning. I have had a look at the keto diet but isnt it all cheese and bacon etc, so are you saying change it up for low fat cheese kinda thing?
