Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
MelissaWisconsin posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I have had the lap band for a little over 10 years. I had lost 100 lbs but gained 30 back. I recently found out my band migrated. I was having severe acid reflux, regurgitation, and sleepless nights of choking and puking. I finally had some testing done & they found my band migrated and there was a hernia above it and my lower esophagus was having issues pushing food through. I got my fluid taken out on Friday & I am finally able to sleep again. I am really shocked about how strange it is to be able to eat things I wasn't able to for 10 years, I am also enjoying taking a drink while eating. I am going to revise to the gastric bypass surgery & was wondering if anyone has had better success after a revision from the band to bypass? I can't do the sleeve because of my acid reflux issues. I tried to avoid bypass, as to why I had the band to begin with. Something about moving my insides around didn't sit well with me. I also see horror stories about dumping and blood sugar issues. I don't want to gain all my weight back because of a band issue & also don't want to have a removal of one thing and nothing to replace it. I am not sure how fast this will all go, they said they could do emergency surgery if I was still having issues, or do it as a normal surgery. My insurance covers revision. Hopefully soon before I gain all this weight back. I'm enjoying trying different foods I had to avoid for the past 10 yrs. hahahaha. -
Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal switch with sleeve gastrectomy

Hi there. From everything I read your first was sleeve w\ Sadi is going to be wonderful. I’m a revision surgery, so unfortunately I can’t tell you much. My experience is slow, BMS are bad with a lot of simple carbs, but I’m thankful for the opportunity -
I had a pouch dilation and let it go much too long without getting a barium swallow. My symptoms were horrible heartburn, throwing everything up and night time reflux. My pouch was so dilated that even with all the fill out, there was no resolution of my symptoms. This went on for, like, months. Stupid. I had to have revision surgery and i have gained 20 lbs. very depressing.

We're surgery buddies. I check-in tomorrow morning at 7am PST. I'm surprisingly nervous, considering this is a lapband revision. Good luck to you.

Sleeve revision to bypass
Beckyonthebeach replied to Colorchic's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision on Thurs 4/18. Besides gas pains the first two days, I’m doing well. I am a little worried that I don’t feel the restriction I did with the sleeve at the beginning. I can drink as much as I want without any pain. -

GERD but want to have sleeve
YeahOkay31 replied to notmyname's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Think about the RNY. I had very mild GERD before the surgery--just when I ate something too rich and spicy. A few tums a month, nothing major. And when they did the scope pre-op they found a hiatal hernia, so the surgeon concluded that once he fixed it, I would not have any heartburn at all. Sleeve it was. Now I am on two nexium a day plus tums before and after I eat. I am uncomfortable all the time and if this doesn't resolve itself or lessen to a more manageable state I am looking at a revision. I didn't want a RNY, never have, didn't want to have malabsorption issues. But here I am facing another surgery, more pre-op crap, more time off from work, more disrupting my family, another cycle of hair loss. So seriously think about the RNY. I too saw more disasters up close with RNY, but I have seen way more successes on this forum alone. Do you really want to go through this twice? -
Band revision to Sleeve or mini GBP
tfrdrix1 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Looking for others experience w band revision to a sleeve or better off mini GBP? I have the band and scheduled for sleeve. However I have read about Sleeve revisions to the mini gastric bypass. Don't want to be a double fall! the mini GBP scare me w the malabsorption issue though. -
I'm going to be the devil's advocate on this one! The question you asked is a very good one - one that I wish I would've looked into a little more before having the surgery. I was told from the very beginning that the band is ONLY a tool - is does not work alone. It will restrict your portion sizes, providing you keep up with your fills. However, it is EXTREMELY easy to eat "junk food", "slider" foods, whether you're just right or too tight. I love, love, love sugar and salt, and everything that contains them. I have found that if you aren't willing/ready to make the changes in your head first - the band will not make a difference. I have been banded for 19 months and haven't lost nor gained a single pound. That being said, I do contribute my success as far as not gaining to the band - because without it, I truly believe I would be even heavier. However, I am very disappointed, disgusted, and frustrated - to say the very least. And, yes, I will be the first to admit that it is my fault. I didn't truly believe what I was told "the band is only a tool", "you have to work with the band, in order to make the band work with you". These things are most definitely true. Although I went thru the psych eval like everyone else - and passed it -- I was not ready to make the changes in my head, therefore, my success is suffering. It is also true that the band requires the most effort by you of any of the weight loss surgeries. I am by no means trying to discourage you from having the band - it is a wonderful tool and many have had great successes with it; I just want to let you know that THE BAND IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. As bad as I wanted to think it was for me, I now know that it was not. I'm actually considering revising to a bypass. Please think about your inner self while you make this decision. It is a decision that no one else can make for you - only you know your personality. I wish you the very best of luck on your journey.

Hi everybody. I've been reading the forums and cheering yall on for a few months now. I currently have the lap band. I've had it a few years and was never really successful with it. The little bit that I lost I gained back plus some. I made the decision to have the revision to sleeve done. It took me about a year to make that decision but I'm hoping to finally live my life to the fullest. I got the call today that I'm approved! I'm scheduled for March 2nd. Seems as if it took forever to get here but now seems like a whirlwind. I'm very excited and very afraid to fail at this one too. Yall are so encouraging and informative. I can't wait!

I am now 4 months post op. I was planning on the sleeve until I actually spoke with my gastroenterologist and learned that the sleeve can make Gerd/reflux worse which would mean a revision to bypass anyway. I also had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and stage 3 kidney disease which was why I was having this procedure done in the first place. I had RNY on 9/29 and immediately my severe Gerd and type 2 diabetes was gone! In addition I had a fairly easy recovery and have been doing fantastic ever since. Even my kidney function has improved. I have not regretted having RNY for even 1 second. The only thing I di regret is not having it sooner. I might have not gotten kidney disease which is not reversible. Good luck on your decision and your upcoming surgery!

Two years out, no weight loss, so sick and tired

I came on here after getting scheduled for revision surgery from my lapband to RNY. I agree! Kimaly, I am glad your surgery went well but let me tell you. Mine has been a total nightmare also. You have no right to act all high and mighty. My realize band is FULL. See that FULL. I have 100% no feeling of fullness, restriction nothing. The band has not slipped, the band has not moved, the surgery was perfect. My esophagus is perfect, everything is PERFECT. Yet I have no weight loss whatsoever, none. In fact even with the liquid diet, I lost 10 pounds. That came right back when I went to soft foods. My surgeon said in some people the band just does not work, same as with anything. I happened to be one of those lucky people. I feel horrible for the person posting this, it is an awful thing to have happen and you feel like a total failure. Its embarassing because you get it and people know and yet there you are still as big, if not bigger than you were before WLS. It does a lot to you mentally because you do blame yourself and it hurts. You put all this time, money and hope into this surgery thinking that you are going to lose the weight and get your life back. Then you get it and not only is that not the case, you have this thing in your body that is a hassle. I really recommend going to the psych and talking about it with a neutral party. You need to weigh your options, talk to your surgeon, your PCP and a nutritionist. RNY and other surgeries are a complete different ballgame. I really feel for you and your situation. Don't let other people get to you. If it makes you feel better, all of the surgeons looked at my tests and scratched their heads. Also you may want to check out the 7 stages of grief, it really doesnt just deal with death. Your emotions are normal and if you feel out of control in that respect there are people that care that will help you. -
1) I was already approved so why do I have to see the doc again? Like DL said to answer all your questions, so have a list ready! Mine saw me to have me sign authorization forms, give me my date for the pre op seminar and me preacription for my primary for the pre op testing. 2)what happens at your last pre op appointment? My last appointment was all my pre op testing/clearance ekg, chest xray, blood work 3) when do you get your surgery date? In my original RNY 8 yrs ago I had to appeal for a year and a half, this time I had a revision and it took two weeks to approve and get my surgery date. I had to re schedule because it was too soon! 4) should I already start my pre op diet now? In my opinion if your surgeon said to loose weight before surgery I would, it definetly would not hurt. 5) how many people didn't have to do a 2 week diet? I had to do a full liquid diet two weeks prior 6) did you have any complications? And if so what? In my first RNY I was in tubated and in ICU for 48 hrs But was also 117lbs heavier than I am now. Also Ten days later I was bleeding due to an internal hemorroid and was in the hospital for another 8 days. Other than these my only other complication has been anemia. Since mine was a revision I was NPO for 48 hours with an NG tube other than that I was okay. 7) how long were u out of work? The first time I was out a month This time three weeks 8) how long after the surgery can u have sex? I waited nine days, till I felt up to it. 9) what do I need for the hospital? My best friend was chapstick and a teddy bear a friend gave me to put on my stomach when I walked or got wheeled for the upper GI 10)how many people had children after rny? And does it help boost fertility? Sorry not me, had mine prior 11)what vitamins do I need to buy? Every surgeon is different and requires different brands/things what I was told to buy was liquid or chewable multi Vitamin, sublingual B12, sublingual Biotin and Calcium citrate with Vitamin D chewable. For my surgeon everyting must be chewable for the first three months. 12)what did u find most helpful after surgery? Having my husband with me for the first few days 13) did u do it alone? Or was somethere to help u during the day? No, I was lucky to have my hubby here because I did not do well with the dilaudin or the morphine and was throwing up blood after each dose. If he would not have been there I would of thrown up all over myself each time. He was also very helpful the first couple of times getting me out of the bed and into the chair, walking and back in bed. Hope this helps! And remember everyone's experience is different and this was mine, just wanted to share so you get an idea!

Is this the *only* surgery to have?
mp8btpc replied to Dave_NW's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL it is like we are a bunch of sports fans and each surgery is a different team that we are all fanatics about. Well here in our park there are a ton of band to sleeve revisions so for those people it was not the right choice. Each surgery has it's pro's and con's so depending on each person and the things they find important to maintain their lifestyles you will get fanatics on each side of the surgery road. I personally think the ongoing risk of complications with the band (slippage, errosion, esophogeal issues and fills then needing unfills etc) it was just too many "what if'" I wouldn't want any surgery that reroutes my intestines because I personally know of two people that died of complications after those types of surgeries and I would rather leave that part of my body intact. The sleeve for me was shown as effective as the other two if not even more so. I felt like once I healed it was a one and done procedure and the risk of complications after the initial healing period was done was minimal. So this was the right surgery for me. I am now a diehard TEAM VSG fan! -
I'm thinking about a revision...
teedsg replied to sheetmetalgirl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
@@sheetmetalgirl, I agree with @@Dairymary, maybe go back to the basics first and check to see if you have PCOS or insulin resistance. Also, check your insurance company to see if you ate a candidate for a revision. I don't know much about revisions... -
I'm thinking about a revision...
Kimberlee1383837812 replied to sheetmetalgirl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I personally have been through almost exactly what you're going through. Sleeved 10/2013...lost 90 lbs the first 7 months, then hit a wall. Stuck to diet & exercise...nothing! My body put back on 15 pounds even though I still stuck to strict eating! I went back to my surgeon in May 2016. We tried even stricter diet...stayed the same. I took phentermine for 3 months and only lost 3 lbs!! (Most people will lose at least 20+ in that med). So, it was inevitable....I opted revision. I had my surgery 11/9...had a bleeding complication the next day and ended up in the hospital a week and had 4 blood transfusions. Healing now &. on track. Lost 19 lbs, but have been stalled for 6 days!!! Frustrating. I never stalled with my sleeve. I guess I'd suggest trying what I did with your doctor and seeing if anything else can help you while making the decision to revise. Everyone will tell you eat better, exercise more, do a pouch test, do back to basics, etc...all good intentions but not the answer when you know what you've tried. Good luck to you!!! -
Hi peeps! Two questions for everyone if you can answer.. 1. I am 14 days post op (band to sleeve revision) and the largest incision is almost healed however the internal tissue surrounding the incision is super hard.. Does the density of that tissue minimize overtime!? 2. I notice many folks are experiencing stalls 3-4 wks out what did you do to overcome it?

Anxiety and getting sleeved
rensterness replied to ShelleyHolt's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
They did a full Endoscopy yesterday in the main OR and my stomach is totally twisted and kinked, in order to fix is revision is required. This is VERY UNCOMMON and happens in less then .02 % of sleeve patients. :/ I just happened to be in that lucky percent, ugh OMG..... that scares me so much. Im so sorry to hear that your stomach twisted. I havent been sleeved yet but its things like that that worry me so much because I used t have the lap band and i was told that the chance the band would slip is very low, like 1-3% well guess what? mine slipped, i had another surgery to fix it and it slipped again. I was told they cannot say why it slipped, sometimes they just dont know BUT that it can be because I lost weight fairly fast and sometimes things shift inside and things can happen. So Im super worried that now my stomach will twist!!! ugh...... im scared Don't be, the chances are EXTREAMLY rare. Also realize I lost over a hundred pounds in less then five months which is really quick weight loss, and that weight loss effected my stomach twisting. The chances of this happening are so rare it's not even funny, especially in a women since women lose slower then men. So don't stress it -
Am a revision and have had the band since June 2011. It has slipped so I am having it removed and sleeved at the same time. New to this and quite nervous about surgery next week. I chose to tell only a few select people. My husband and daughters.... I am going for pre-op tomorrow.
