Beforehand had two weeks of no rice, potatoes, bread, or pasta. Basically, meat and veggies and a little fruit. After there was a week of liquids a couple weeks of full liquids and then moving up as you felt you could. Felt like a long time. You are also supposed to keep up the no pasta, rice, bread or potatoes for the rest of your life.

It's not just a chewing matter, it's also how fast we eat. If your band is adjusted properly, the hole(stoma) is very small. If you eat too fast or too big(or both), food starts to back up into your esophagus because the food can't pass through quick enough. This is where the sliming comes in. Food in your pouch isn't exposed to the slime. It's exposed to stomach acids. Your esophagus thinks food is stuck and is trying to lubricate so that the bolus of food you've eaten will pass through the lower esophageal sphincter. Prolonged stuck/sliming episodes can cause esophageal dilation. Slow down and take smaller bites. BTW-I'm speaking from experience and I'm one who still struggles with this identical issue a few times a week.

My port location is also more sore in the evening - probably all the reaching and bending through out the day that does it. I had my 3 week check up last monday and asked the doctor if all the bending and streching (reaching for things) would hurt anything inside and he said that once my incisions are healed (which they are quite nicely) that I should not worry about hurting anything inside with normal physical activity. He did state that because I now have a lump of hard plastic in me that if I lay on it while exercising or lean against it that it is going to hurt - after all it is a lump of hard plastic. So I think this evening soreness is normal and as long as your incisions are healed well you should be fine to. If it eases your mind call the doc and ask him - that's what we pay them the big bucks for. Hope your pain free soon!

Hi all! I have a quick question...I am getting my band on September 4th! Yea! I have three children, and I am just waffling back and forth on weather we want one last child. I want to lose like a hundred pounds first, hence the band. I am 296lbs now. I had one doctor tell me that I shouldn't get pregnant with the band because pregnancy would stretch out my band and it wouldn't work the same after the baby was born. Is this true? I really really want to get at goal weight eventually, and I intend on my band being my best friend for life. Will pregnancy ruin it? Will it work the same after the baby is born? Does anyone know where I can find out more about it? Thanks! Carey

I'm newly registered on the site but have been lurking for a while. An old friend is visiting for the week and wants to have dinner at an organic Chinese restaurant I'd mentioned before. Chinese food is a major weakness of mine, and at four weeks post-op and with no fill yet, I realize I need a solid plan to prevent myself from overdoing it. So, I plan to order a small egg drop Soup and eat a few bites to half of it, depending on how I feel. Then, for an entree, I'm ordering either chicken stir-fried with mixed vegetables or chicken with cashews. I'll ask for a to-go box as soon as we order, and I'll pack 2/3 of the entree into it as soon as it arrives. I'll eat with chopsticks to force myself to eat more slowly, and I will not eat any rice. I'm also going to repeat my plan to my friend. Hopefully that, along with posting it here, will force me to be accountable. Thanks for reading! Jenny

In America on Business... and struggling (except for the shopping :->)
Luscious posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi folks, I'm current in the USA on business for 2 weeks...... first week in Florida, now in Boston. I'm struggling. I had my first fill just 1 week before I left, and much to my surprise, seem to have some good degree of restriction. I'm struggling for 2 reasons: 1. I haven't learned yet what I can eat without problem, how much and when to stop. Its hard to get into a good routine, because the food I'm eating here is very different to what I would eat at home in Australia. I'm spending a lot of time with that dull pain radiating from around my pouch, which I'm sure means I've eating too quickly, too much, or not chewed well enough. 2. The second problem is the food. With all due respect to my american friends, the food here in the US is just diabolical (especially when you are living out of a hotel). I hate to say it but the food is just so unhealthy and processed. Of course, we have junk food in Australia too, but it seems even the junk food in america is more unhealthy than the junk food in Australia. On the plus side - I'm having a ball in my free time hitting the clearance racks. I'm coming home with 20 kgs of extra luggage. Great clothes in 1X (14-16) for the coming Sydney summer, and great clothes in 2X for the current Sydney winter. Last time I was in US, some 3X clothes didn't fit me, so I'm pretty happy - so very very cheap compared to what we pay. I got 3 great jackets for winter at $15, $20 and $30, and some really cute argyle cardigans for $12 each... woohooo. Several shirts for $10 a piece. Basically, I spent less than $350 for complete winter and summer wardrobes, that will see me through as I drop sizes. Plus sized clothes are so plentiful and inexpesive here in US. -
My physc recommended me to start tracking my calories. I was surprised. I am 5"3' and weigh 276 and have been consume 900 - 1400 calories and excersing my buns off 4 days a week with no weight loss. Therefore I am willing to get the band to see if that will no what no diet has done. I wonder how many calories people were consuming before the surgery and after the surgery.

Banded May 19 & feeling good but tired
mamabully replied to lmnlineman's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was also banded on the 19th along with my best friend. We had back to back surgeries and were able to have an entire day and night at the hospital together. My energy level came back to normal by three of four days after surgery. My best friends did as well. I feel really fortunate that we felt as great as we did. I am sure you will get sronger and I truly believe that the more you push yourself to walk and move the quicker the energy comes back. Good luck. -
Husband had Surgery Today
New_girl_in_town replied to Let's do this's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Don't feel guilty. This is a journey that he has chosen and all you can do is be an emotional cheerleader. I'm 2 weeks post op and have made my kids dinner in the past week (baked French fries!!!) and didn't eat it. So if he's decided to make the change in his life, it will be fine. -
Surgery Monday, hubby just left for Iraq....
Doxie replied to PUDGY's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
:w00t: Hugs for you. My hubby deployed 1 week after my surgery. I didn't get to give him any good send-off sex . I keep him updated with pictures each month and we talk on the web cam several times a week so he gets to "see" me then. He'll be home next month for his R&R leave. I do have one kid at home still but he's old enough to feed himself and I do some cooking but it's nice not to have the pressure of cooking a big dinner for hubby and trying to figure out my new eating style...gotta look for the positives. Do you have someone to help you with the kiddo for those first few days after surgery? Keep busy and time will fly by and he'll be back home before you know it. I can't believe it's been almost 5 months for us already. -
We share the same FANTASTIC doctor! Isn't he the best? Actually, I mean that in many ways...he really *is* the best. He's one of the top teaching surgeons of the band in this entire country. I'm still on purees but beginning soft foods today as it was okay by the nutritionist as long as I stick to very soft foods for the next week. That's great, because my hubby is taking me out for my birthday dinner tonight (my b-day is next week). Hey...lets stay in touch! I have my first fill exactly 6 weeks post-op...that will be February 18th. I'm getting excited! I need it so bad (hungry, hungry, hungry) and I'm really hoping I get some restriction right off the bat. I'm gonna tell Schram to be as absolutely agressive with my fill as he can be. Take it easy and I'm so glad you are doing so well! They really take good care of ya over there at Forest, don't they?

I'm trying to still stay within the guidelines, but it's hard when I got the lapband because I couldn't control my eating in the first place. For about two weeks after my fills, I feel restricted and can't eat even the 1/2 cup of food at meals and do lose weight, but then I become able to eat anything and it is a constant fight to not eat constantly. I don't know if I am just not restricted enough or maybe have a leak of the saline. I'm getting another fill next week and hope it helps. I'll talk to the doctor then too.

Medifast/Optifast for primary weightloss with lapband?
JustinsMama posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Would this be possible - to get the lapband and try to lose the majority of your weight with this and then do a "maintenance" period by introducing regular food? I did Medifast before and lost 13 lbs in one week by sheer willpower, surely the band would help even more? (Of course this was last year and I've since gained it back and then some). I don't particulary view myself as a sensitive/queasy type person, but I was just reading the thread about food sitting in the smaller pouch waiting to go into the stoma and then something about saliva being so gross when something won't go down and I literally gagged at my computer after trying to picture it. Needless to say I backed out of those threads and am not going to open up anything else like that for a day or two. So, I'm thinking if I gag like that just reading about other people's experience and I don't even have a lapband, what is trying to eat real food going to be like if/when I actually have the lapband? Thanks for any advice! -
Hi - I guess this board does work. I was pleasantly surprised that you all replied. Thanks for that! Yes, my bloodwork showed Iron as being low and therefore the Doc had me fill a prescription of Iron with a chaser of Vitamin C. Today is much better than the last three days, so I'm thinking it was the Iron and I'm finally adjusting to it. I've been eating alot of veggy's and an apple everyday. I know that is short-lived once I have surgery I can say goodbye to that for a month. Is it a difficult adjustment going from food to liquids?

Thank you for responding! This pocket was also under the incision (port site) but NO: tenderness, redness, swelling, warmth or drainage. I have been afebrile and the incision itself looks unremarkable: clean edges, well approximated, scab gone, only faint bruising remains. The drainage was Not purulent, so I was relieved immediately! I have not read any posts regarding this issue, so just thought I would reach out & ask. Surgery was just 3 weeks ago, so this was just a minor shocker (more for hubby) lol, but I will continue to closely monitor.

Hello! Newby Here! Surgery was 10/12/10.
JMinDallas replied to BigMommaNoMore's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Congrats! Welcome to the starting of the new you! I was banded almost 4 months ago. I am 35 and have 3 kiddos. It's amazing how much better we feel with some weight gone! I actually want to play with the kids and have fun doing it! Yeah for the mushies! So much better than drinking your food! And good for you on the scale. I too didn't own one, and didn't get on it except for dr appts. I liked to be pleasantly surprised each time, and I was. I did buy a Wii balance board and now weigh myself once a week on it. Keep up the good work! -
Hello "Onederland" I finally am back, after 10 years!
itschoice replied to WorkingMom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Its been about 8 years for me. I am at 200.4 this morning. I only lost about 3 pounds in the last month or so but I go for a fill on Tuesday and am hoping to get to onederland some time next week. All of you that have gotten there have done a great job. I soooooo hope to be joining you VERY soon. -
Pool Girl: The first couple of days were the hardest.. last week wasn't that bad but today is really hard for some reason. Better "right now" though. The unjury chicken did the trick I think. I have to keep the Protein constant I think. Mommy: The food Network? Wow... you are brave!! Salivating at the television yet? I've been looking through cookbooks trying to find recipes I can puree or ?? as soon as I can have real food. I need to make a list. I know I will be making a sugar free/low fat cheesecake though... can't wait for that! Yes.. in one month all will be normal in the world.. or semi-normal at that point for me!!

Good evening all, My local fitness center offers TRX classes. I know the instructor from some kettle bell classes that I took several years ago. I go to the fitness center three to four times a week for spin classes and occasionally use the elliptical. But I need some new routines. My experience with weight lifting was short lived. Is anyone doing this training? Do you feel it's giving you done upper body strength and a stronger core? I have some lower back issues from time to time and a physical therapist said I need a stronger core. I'd appreciate knowing your experiences, both good and bad.
