Hmm, I am almost 3 months out and have had no hair loss. I have read some lose some don't I did see some threads about special shampoo/conditioner that people used. I think your best bet is to keep that protein up and make sure you are taking all your vitamins daily. The dietitian with my program says if you follow the requirement you shouldn't have too many problems but she also said some people just lose some hair and biotin can be taken but wont necessarily help prevent this. From reading threads, most people have hair problems somewhere between 3-9 months and then it slowly resolves. I have decided that if my hair gets bad I will cut my hair shorter and go from there.

anyone with anthem insurance?
papillon_mom replied to braydensmama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To "braydensmama", have you heard anything from your insurance yet? I also have Anthem BCBS. I do know that my insurance covers psych tests but the Dr. that is doing the test doesn't accept Anthem so I'm going to have to come up with $400 out of pocket but they did say that my insurance will reimburse me. Let me know how all this goes for you, it sounds like me and you are in the same spot in this process. To "Rina83" thank you for posting the site to Anthem, but to me requirement #2 is unclear. My surgeon is saying I have to do the 6 month diet because that's what most insurance companies require. Of course they haven't filed my claim yet so according to this I may not have the 6 month wait as long as my Dr. states that I have made weight loss attempts in the past? Am I reading this right? If I am right I wish the surgeon will go ahead and file the claim, it's been over a week since I've had the appointment with him. To think I have to wait for 6 months makes me even more depressed, as if being "morbidly obese" isnt' bad enough -
I was having leg cramps pre-surgery. I haven't had them since. I was hoping they were gone for good. It's nothing for me to be up walking around the yard at 3:00am to work out cramps.

Pre-op diet - pantry necessities
wittygirl replied to wittygirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Y'all these are really great ideas. Thank you. I don't know what to expect of the pre-op diet, but think I have a better sense post op. Everyone does it different, so I thought I'd ask. Looks like the Food Bank or the school will be getting a pantry full of stuff. I think I'm in the right headspace, but would like to come home from the hospital ready for 4 weeks of liquid and soft food. Baby food is a great idea....any particular types over another? -

Yeah the gas pain in my shoulder just started tonight. Thought I was having a heart attack too! These posts are great & have been incredibly helpful! So far this has been the worst of the pain. I'm only a week out so I think that's pretty damn good. Haven't used the pain meds in a few days but this is horrible, it hurts even to breathe. Hope it goes quick for both of us! I went to a seminar the second week of September, and went to my Nutritionist appointment and had my Psychiatric Evaluation within a week. On the first of October, I was accepted by my insurance. I had my tests done on November 2nd, and a pre-surgery appointment on November 8th. All in all, it's taken me around three months from start to finish - from my seminar to my surgery.

September Surgery date!!
judydye replied to nursekristen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm getting my band on 9-13! that has got to be a lucky number for me as both of my kids had that number in sports. I am very nervous and excited at the same time. I am not afraid of the anesthesia . It always makes me feel so rested when I come out of it. My biggest fear is not having my little yorkie jump on my stomach for a week. That's going to be hard to do. My whole life I've dealt with weight. Every wish I make is "to be thin". Now my wishes will come true. I can't wait to tuck in my blouse. -
I was banded December 3 2006 and have lost 120 lbs including the 20 lbs presurgery from the liquid diet. (Yech!) I'm thrilled at the success and would do it all over again. After a 20 lb gain after the death of out 10 year old grandson from leukemia. (Yes you can gain weight on the lap band if you stuff eat "feel better" junk day in day out, and you just feel worse) I've been on a pretty steady minus 5-6 pounds per month since then. I'm thrilled to have join the Forum!

Hello everyone! I'm pretty new here but I've been lurking on the website since I found it, a few weeks ago. I'm in the beginner stages of getting the surgery. Last month I met with the doctor who would be my surgeon, he was really nice and concerned which made me feel at ease. But he said I have a dangerous stomach? I later found out what he was talking about(I gain most of my weight around my mid section). Then he recommended the duodenal switch since my BMI is over 60, I said no and that I felt more comfortable with the gastric sleeve. Then after that was all over my mother has now become dead set against it. She believes I can do this the old fashion natural way but I don't think I can. And then I haven't even started the diet i'm suppose to be doing for surgery(I think I will try the liquid diet to make It easier on myself). So now i'm at a cross roads with myself and my mother. I have way over 100lbs to lose and I think i'll end up failing if I do this naturally, I believe the sleeve can help me lose the weight and keep it off. I'm 29 years old if that helps and also in a few years I want to start a family. What are your thoughts on my predicament?

Should I have the surgery?
awold0 replied to Short N Sweet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally understand. I thought about having the surgery 4 years ago. I also lived in CA at that time and had started the meetings with the doctors but my family said the same thing. My husband and my family thought I could do it myself if I put my mind to it etc. I decided not to have the surgery. Now fast forward to 2013. I had moved to Texas and gained almost 40 more pounds and my yo yo dieting was just so frustrating. My health had taken a huge slide. I had sleep apnea and high blood pressure . I finally hit the breaking point and started the research again and made doctor appointments. Once I started going to meetings and made up my mind for myself my family followed. They saw that I had made up my mind and I was gong to change my life. By the time I was having my surgery my family was all on board. I am now 5 months post op. I am so happy I moved forward and did the sleeve surgery. . I wish I had done it earlier in my life. I work out 5 days a week. I have lost 71 pounds and I feel so much healthier. My family is so supportive and now see's how I have changed my life and is so happy for me. You also might think about taking your mom to support groups for WLS post and pre op. I have seen many family member's go with loved ones to help them get information that helps them to understand so it is not so scary. Good Luck with what ever you decide and I wish you the best. -
Six month waiting period
honk replied to vdavenport's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
While my insurance did not have a 6 month diet requirement my surgeon had a lot of test/classes that I had to attend. It would have been 2.5 months from the time of consult to surgery. One week prior to the surgery my neurologist told me that he could not support doing the surgery because the bloodclot I had suffered five months earlier had not been sufficiently resolved. I was heartbroken. I had lost my required weight (30 pounds) and just wanted to have the surgery. From that point it was another 4 months. I would agree with a previous poster that this is a good time for you to start living a new life style. Determine what causes you to make the wrong food decision. What foods trigger you to eat more. Some research says that when you eat with a crowd you eat more. My experience is that my friends and family who are thin helped me eat less when we were together. I could see when they stopped eating. Waaaayyy before I would have stopped. I really like the 90/10 philosophy. If you eat correctly 90% of the time; you can allow yourself to have fun 10% of the time. One of my issues with dieting is that for months I could eat boring low fat food; but eventually I needed a break. One thing led to another and stopped eating correctly and eventually exercising. I gave myself permission to have treats on occation; but you know what thin people do that all the time. -
I'm constantly hungry ! I'm 4 weeks out and can eat anything now . How do u know the difference between acid reflex and hunger ? Because I'm always starving ! And it's not in my head

Please help calm me down! I'm a wreck.
karenann1708 replied to freelee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also one week away from surgery, had my pre-op EKG which showed atrial fibrillation.had to have another EKG and a Cardiolite stress test, long story short... One week later the cardiologist cleared me for surgery, just got the call today and my surgery is rescheduled to June 25. So I will start the liver reduction diet again the end of this week. Good luck with the pulmonologist hope your surgery can be scheduled soon. -
It took me six weeks to the day to receive my passport and passport card.

23 years young...October 17th!
ryn61363 replied to skinnymolly's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Molly! Hope you're feeling better I'm 24 (Starting weight 114kg/251lbs) and I had my sleeve done on oct 9, it's been a little over a week now and I'm pretty much recovered. I now weigh around 105kg/231lbs. I'm just worried about scarring! Instead of sutures, my surgeon put derma-glue on it and it's healing well. The first day was hell with lots of gas and plenty of black out moments.. A nightmare. But it got progressively better as the hours went by and I was discharged on the 2nd day. I've been able to drink over 2 litres a day and get my Protein in and I can't wait till I can eat puréed stuff! I can already feel some of my clothes hanging a bit loose I started walking 2 hours a day, 1 hour at a time after the first week. Exercise has become easier cos there's less of me to lug around and do stuff. That part I definitely love. Time to build a new body and start living! My surgeon told me the highest weight loss would be within the first 3 months post surgery, so we need to work our butts off during this period to lose as much weight as possible before it slows, and I intend to do just that! -
I am scheduled for June 26th and am wondering if it is safe to travel the next week. I would be packing shakes and broth and such, but I'm wondering if that is pushing myself too hard after surgery. I've contacted my Dr's office and asked if I could do my one week post-op that Friday, June 30th. With the next week being Fourth of July, I'd like to be away from neighborhood barbeques and the socializing. I'd be within a few hours of home in case I needed to go in. For those of you who have been through it, do you think it's doable? I wouldn't drive. I'd just be the passenger and it would mainly be hanging out watching my son play. I appreciate your advice. Thanks!

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. The plan I was given to follow was: Weeks 1-8: 2 ounces of food per meal x 3 meals per day Weeks 9-15: 3 ounces per meal Months 4-6: 4 ounces per meal Months 7-9: 5 ounces per meal Months 10-12: 6 ounces per meal Months 12-18: 7 ounces per meal Months 18 and beyond: 8 ounces per meal One other point. Protein shakes do not count against your meal allotment. I would blend in a half a banana into my Protein shake and the half a banana does not count against my meals. [but don't take this to the extreme.]

Great explanation. If you're still losing a pound a week, that's not a true plateau. I know it sucks to only lose 4lbs in a month... that hasn't happened for me YET since surgery, but it's happened to me plenty of times in the past with diets. Hold on to that four lbs a months because in five months, you'll be at your goal weight! I'm at five months out, and I'm terrified about hitting a plateau soon. Just my past I guess. So i'm already preparing for what I need to do to get past it. Typically when we hit a plateau, we need to change something up. Look up different types of workouts or do two-a-days (cardio for 20-30 minutes twice: once in the morning, once in the evening), or add heavier weights to our routine or more reps or try a new routine all together. Maybe have a cheat meal. I've read about zig-zag dieting where you allow yourself more calories one day. So if you're eating 800 calories a day, maybe try getting 1,000 on Saturday then back to 800 on Sunday. I've heard it's a shock to the body and can trigger weight loss. Good luck!

The Girl Next Door has been banded..
bandelle replied to Thegirlnextdoor's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, Congrats! I was banded on 10/6, so I'm a little ahead of you. I was not hungry for the first three or four days. After that, I got a little bit of an appetite, but a little Protein shake would satisfy me. I added a little Fiber powder to my shakes to avoid the constipation thing. As for being a bit loose, you have to remember, you're only taking in liquids and most likely have been for a week or more. You may also have a lactose issue, especially if you are making your shakes with milk. A lactose enzyme pill can help with that. Your appetite does come back, I am in bandster h-e-double toothpicks right now. I can't wait for my first fill. I was hoping to delay it until after the Thanksgiving holiday, but if my surgeon says I can have a fill tomorrow when I see her, I just may do that. -
The Girl Next Door has been banded..
sharnut replied to Thegirlnextdoor's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello - you almost are the girl next door, as I'm in Maine. I'm Sharon and was banded on 6/24/08 - it's been a wonderful experience and so glad that I've made this decision. When I started the pre-op diet I was 250.6 - this morning I was 210.6 - It's been a very slow process - that has become a journey. I've had 3 or 4 fills - my band holds 10cc's and I have 61/4 cc's in my band now. I could probably use some more restriction, but as long as I'm loosing and eating small amounts....I might hold off, as I don't want to overfill the band. Good luck!!!! -
Had my final weigh-in today of my 6 month doctor supervised diet. They will be sending all of my information to BCBS tomorrow then it's just the waiting game. Barbara said it shouldn't be a problem since they're only requirements is to show 5 years of obesity and a 6 month doctor supervised diet and I've met both of those requirements. She said it could be 2-6 weeks b4 we get a response, so here I wait:tired. I shall return with more information.

First Day Trip - Need suggestions for care
TheCurvyJones replied to agirlhasnofluff's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You can try the Protein powder w. Water. Maybe as a last resort. I find that kind of gross but it might tide you over. If you have a backpack or fanny pack I would plan to bring some foods with you. Pack and plan to be away all day and take in what you can. They can question you if you want but you have a medical reason to bring in your own food. Keep your eye out for soft stuff you can eat-- Soups, etc but you'll have to basically depend on your food stores. Take a cold pack to keep your cheese, etc cold at the bottom of the bag. At least you'll have something to snack on until you're off of the grounds and back at your car where you have food you can eat. Make some egg salad or tuna salad and stick it in a ziplock and keep it cool with an icepak or in a cooler in the car. Also see if you'd be able to leave and come back. You could go to your car and have something to eat and go back. At 2 weeks out though I don't think you'll be all that hungry, but I know very little about the duodenal switch only that the sleeve is part 1 of it and based on how I felt at 2 weeks out, some Snacks should be okay. I LIVED on pintos and cheese from taco bell during the fist few weeks. Even now I will go through there for some Beans and cheese.
