PreOp Liquid Diet KILLING ME!!!
klus263 replied to JesseW's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 3 of the preop diet....Yes, I have had a few moments of weakness but I HAVE NOT giving into the urges. I can have low fat cream soups including tomato soup. I think this is the life saver for me as this is a bit more filling but I am eating every 2 hours also as I am currently a diabetic but after discussing this diet with my PCP Dr, I am not taking any prescriptions or my sugar level would drop to low. So far so good. 3 more days then 1 day clear liquids....Surgery is Dec 1st. My husband had me go out shopping yesterday for a while so he could eat his frozen Boston Market Turkey Dinner since I could cannot eat so I wouldn't have to smell it. You can do this, just take if one day at a time. -
I was on Metformin, Glyburide, and insulin (low dose). All were taken normally up to day of surgery with exception of the insulin, which was 1/2 reg dose the night prior. Since that time I have not taken any of the 3. I test regularly, even without the meds the first couple of weeks I was getting low readings (mid 50's to low 60's) and took glucose tablets. Since that time I have been hovering in the 90's.

Hey there. It's Thursday night and I'm coming up on my fourth night being sleeved. My surgery was Monday morning. It's crazy how much you go through and prepare and understand everything "in theory" but in actuality it is so much more mind blowing than you realize. At least for me. I had a rough first night. It was my first experience with pain medication and I was reacting very poorly to it. There were moments of severe doubt and fear that I had gone ahead and done something terrible. But once I left the hospital, was able to shower at home and sleep in my own bed for a night, I felt exponentially better. And every day since has been better and better. I know it's only week one - there is still intense gas pain here and there and random incision pain as well. But I'm walking, I'm drinking, I'm working on getting my Protein and Vitamins in. I didn't realize I was surrounded by such supportive friends and family. People have been so open, honest and encouraging. It's been truly eye-opening and wonderful to experience. I don't know what the next few weeks will bring but I'm trying this positivism on for size and working towards a new life, a new me... Or rather an evolution of me Thanks!! Good luck to all who have been, are or will be on this journey!

Every doctor is different. I did have to do a pre-op diet a week prior to surgery. It was full liquids (greek yogurt, Protein shakes, fat free pudding, sugar free Jello, broth) for six days prior to surgery. The day before surgery it was Clear Liquids which was unflavored Protein Shakes, broth, and sugar free jello (but nothing red). I did lose about 13-14 pounds doing this which was great; however, according to my doc, the purpose was really to get my liver as small as possible before the surgery. Ask your doc if it's a good idea for you if you're really interested. A friend of mine had gastric and her doc allowed her to eat regularly all the way up to midnight before the surgery. So, it really depends on the doctor, I think.

Congrats on your weight loss! Whether you need a fill is something that only you and your surgeon or PA can answer after considering the following: How volume can you eat? How many meals a day do you eat? How long after eating are you hungry? That being said, plateaus are a normal part of the weight loss process. They can be frustrating if we let them. Are you sure you are only eating 1,000 calories a day? Are you logging your food and drink? When we estimate, we usually estimate to low. Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of Water a day? Are you consuming at least 50 grams of Protein daily? If the answer is yes to those 3 questions, try eating 200 more calories a day. It sounds backwards but the more fuel you give your body, the hotter the fire burns. If you gain after a week; cut it back down.

Good luck to you!! It sounds like you will get approval. I also had no co-morbidities but I did have a BMI over 40. I was approved in about a week. I currently have 2 insurances, my out of pocket was $176.... -
Hi pals, So I had my surgery yesterday. I have to say that I wanted a redo that's how much it hurts. I kept gagging because of all the gas and there is nothing they can give you to make it stop besides you have to walk. And who wants to walk just few hours after surgery? Not me for sure. So even though you feel like you need to throw up, nothing will come out but but gas. I was regretting and should of put more thoughts into it. They were giving me medications but still felt discomfort. Finally in the evening I took few walks including 3 am because of the gas pain. You have no choice believe me. Omg I am literally peeing every hour because of all the Fluid they are giving me. I am still epo until my test later. Hopefully I won't have a problem. Oh I had throat discomfort and it was so scratchy. I told my nurse and she ordered me this spray which they approved and she sprayed it on my throat. At first the taste was horrible I felt like I wanted to throw up but OMG it helped sooo freaking much. It numbs the throat. Right now it's 6:30am and honestly I feel good. No pain besides maybe my back hurts a little and I can feel my scars when getting up to use the bathroom which is normal. I thank god for not having any shoulder pain how some explained. Maybe it might start later but as of right now I am good. The nurse said that's because of gas and as much as you walk.. It will help a lot. So do I have regrets now? Not so much. I feel normal and forgot I had surgery lol. So don't be discouraged everyone is different

Thank you all for the replies! I will try the protein shake thing. I still haven't added that to my diet yet. Here is hoping this works. I am kind of excited to see what I weigh in at when I go to the gym. I try to weigh myself only once a week. Praying for the best!

I've lost almost 15 lbs in 2 weeks. I drink a protein shake for breakfast, one for lunch and lean protien and veggies and a salad for dinner. No carbs! Except for the fruit I have in my protein shake sometimes. If I'm feeling really hungry, sometimes I'll have eggs and bacon for breakfast. Or cheese and turkey for a snack. You can do it! The first week is hard but after that it's super easy! Good luck!

I'm glad you've told your BF. Hopefully between her/him and your family they will be a strong support. Along with this forum too! I'm sure that your hospital has support groups for face to face meetings as well. Unfortunately, the one at my hospital meets on Monday and it conflicts with a class I'm taking, but I have found much support here, and it's easier to be candid when you aren't face to face! ha My Mom was the same way, but I also watched her yo-yo her whole life and that is one of my goals of having this tool. She currently has lost and kept it off and I am proud of her, but she and I both know I need more. I had those same fears, and to be honest I was one of thhose judgemental people.... My friend got gastric bypass a year ago and I 100% thought she was taking "the easy way out" but that's for close minded people and I learned real quick going through this process that there isn't anything easy about it. It is hard work and your success will proves your commitment to that! I only have a 1 day liquid diet the day before-THANK GOD! I have been reading about these 2 week diets and I have no idea how they do it!! I would think I would have a problem being weak. But I also have thought maybe I should try a few days of liquids to get used to the weeks of liquids post op. Let us know how your consultation goes!

Best of luck hun! ❤️️Amy ❤️️

Tick, tock.. surgery in the morning
MNSkolGal replied to MNSkolGal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A little update: I'm 4 days out, and I have been so lucky. Everything thus far has been very easy. I had quite a bit of gas pain when I woke up from anesthesia, which got me anxious, but it subsided. I've made sure to get up once an hour and pace around the living room and kitchen. Much too cold and slippery out to go for walks outside, but I'm looking forward to doing that when I can! I stopped taking the pain meds and the anti-spasm/nausea meds. They made me more sleepy than they helped with pain. I'd say my pain level is at a 1, if not lower. It never really got higher than a 3 the whole time in the hospital. I did sneeze once, which hurt for a second, but other than that, it's been ok. I met my liquids goal the last two days, but I've been sipping like it's my job. Today I stopped using the ounce measuring cup and have been sipping out of glasses and a bottle. I have a bit of tightness in my chest sometimes after sips, but I think it's a spasm. Kind of feels like a hiccup that never fully happens. It's momentary and then passes. I'm excited to try Protein tomorrow! -
Pain Medication Question
Ready4success replied to taralynneRN59's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I stayed overnight due to n/v. I had a Dilaudid pump, which I never used. I was given Toradol post op, and I had IV Tylenol, which was more than enough for the pain. My surgeon uses the On-Q pump, so I was pretty numb the first 3 days, anyway. -
I'm so excited but my nerves are starting to show their ugly face---not gonna lie getting nervous too---why I don't know---my surgeon is amazing and I know that he does this day in and day out for the past 10 years but still....lol---been on opti fast diet for 6 days and down 10 pounds, more week of these shakes to go then it GO TIME

Well, I'm to be banded Sept. 12, and starting to think about stocking up for pre and post surgery. My Dr is saying a two week pre surgery diet. Protein shake for breakfast and lunch, small meal with protien and veggies for dinner, no red meat. I'm thinking hmmm... if I had a regular life and schedule that would work. I'm up 16-18 hours or more a day with overtime, I work a swingshift too. This is really gonna suck!!! I'm starting to wonder how I'm going to cope and have any energy with that little food in such a long time span. Like right now I'm on afternoon shift. I've been up since 7am when the 2yr old gets up, went to work at 3pm and I'll be hear until 3am, then home to sleep until 7-8am and over and over. Does anyone have any suggestions, or am I just whining too much?:cursing:

2 week presurgery diet
RestlessMonkey replied to jillrenee15's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I may be the "gal" Desert Rose heard about. Doc put me on a VERY similar pre-surgery diet for 3 weeks. Since I am a "professionial" dieter, I did what I thought instead of what he told me. I DID lose 15 pounds. However, my liver was too fatty and although he tried, he couldn't get it out of the way to place the band. I came to in recovery only to be told I wasn't banded. NOW I'm on the diet like he said, have lost another 12, and will get banded Aug 29. Apparentlly a low-carb, low to no fat diet causes your body to go first to your liver to pull glycogen and it gets that from the stored fat, so it can shrink a fatty liver. Who knew! Well, my surgeon. LOL SO Let me be a horrible warning. DO what your surgeon says. You may squeak by, but if you don't, it's a pretty miserable feeling. -
2 week presurgery diet
DesertRose replied to jillrenee15's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I just want to express how important it is that you stick with the pre-op diet. I'm sure you've heard it all before but the other day I heard about a gal who had to have her surgery cancelled because her liver did not shrink enough! It would be absolutely horrible to get all the way to that point just to have the surgery cancelled. Now...don't get stressed. :cursing: Just a bit of advice: I was banded June 24, 2008. The pre-op diet was hard but I made it through by the skin of my teeth. Do teeth have skin? Anyway, my problem was the shakes. They tasted horrible and made me gag. I did try a couple of things that made them taste somewhat better and much more tolerable. 1. To keep the carb content down and give your shakes a little creamier taste you can try a couple of spoons of heavy cream. Mix the shake according to directions, but use Water instead of milk and a couple of spoons of the heavy cream. Mix this in a blender with ice and it tastes much like a real milk shake! The key is moderation, go easy on the cream. 2. Use the same recipe above but add some cold coffee. 3. Invest in an extra container of vanilla and mix with root beer, orange soda or any other DIET soda. Tastes a lot like a float! :wink2: Yes, you've probably heard it all before but I just want to reiterate how simple it is to play around with your shakes to make them tolerable. Remember, you CAN and you WILL do it! If nothing else, try the sugar free carnation instant breakfast shakes, mix in a blender with ice, etc. Drink water like a fish! Stay well hydrated and get some walking in before your surgery. This will strengthen your heart and lungs and promote healing after surgery, not to mention help you burn some calories. After the surgery, you will have this very annoying gas and sometimes you will have some shoulder pain, they say this is from the anesthesia. Keep in mind, it will pass! After a few weeks you will be feeling great. Your stomach will be swollen due to the procedure so you will only be able to tolerate liquids for like the first week or more according to your surgeon's instructions. Do NOT choke down any solids. No matter how good something smells, etc. pass it up. Stick to the diet ordered by your surgeon. After the swelling goes down, you will be surprised how much you can eat before your first fill. Be very careful during this phase. You will be tempted to wolf down the same EVEIL FOODS that got you into this mess in the first place. food is not your friend. Break up with food. The relationship is not good for you. It is a destructive relationship that is robbing you of your health and vitality. Reach deep inside your soul and find that inner strength that has kept you going all this time. Think positive and remember all those times you've dreamed of being thinner and healthier. You will make it...we all will. Mucho love...
