It takes a lot of guts (pardon the pun) to just get out there and do it, i used to run only once it got dark. But today i umpired three games of netball for interschool sports. Imgine how merciless 11 year old girls would be to a fat teacher huffing and puffing up and down a netball court trying to keep up with th game, but no, I am the "cool" teacher, even the "pretty" teacher. The reward for being brave and getting out ther is, eventually, huge!

I needed to start early because I needed to lose 10lbs preop. I started walking 10" three times a day and I am now up to 3.5-4miles a day. It really helps with the weight loss and I have found that If I don't to some form of exercise I feel anxious and a little bit guilty. I will tell you that it takes time out of your day. I am fortunate that I am not required to be on a schedule so taking an hour or two hours out of the day is not a hardship. Having had total knee replacements I can tell you that preop excerise is very helpful in the post op phase.

Hello. I am 4 months post op. Everything WAS going great! I had my first fill in Feburary. My doctor poked around on me for a good 15 minutes before decideing to wait a few days and do the fill under a portable x-ray machine. I went in, layed on the table, they positioned the x-ray where it needed to be, my doctor came in, numbed me, then found the spot right away. After my first fill was done, everything went fine. I went in March and decided I needed my 2nd fill. This time I had a doctor working under my doctor. He poked around for a half hour and couldn't find the spot he needed and it hurt. My doctor decided to do it, yet again, under a portable x-ray. This time, however, it wasn't so normal. When the x-ray was turned on, he asked the x-ray tech to do a lateral view. As soon as it turned on again, he knew it was upside down. Three or four of the stitches that are holding my port to my muscle broke. About 3 days after they discovered this, the last one broke. This was 3 weeks ago. I am waiting for my insurance company to ok the surgery to reflip the port. I am in a lot of pain right now. It feels like someone in jabbing me in the side and stomach with a knife from the inside. Has anybody had this happen? Does anybody know anything to take to help ease the pain?

My opinion. Minimally you should get all your muscles twice a week, three times max. Three sets of 15 what ever you are doing...and you should be fatigued by the end of the third set. If it's too light then add more weight. You need to bust your butt to really grow muscles like body builders, don't worry about over doing it. There are all kinds of ways you can hit your muscles groups and ways to rest between sets. Google it. Good luck. Also, if you want to really to knock yourself out look up Crossfit. It's cardio and strength training at the same time. There's lots of jumping and crazy stuff, but it's a great time saver.

I used to play softball on three teams in the summer. That was over 25 years ago. Seven years ago I worked out twice daily at the gym and with a trainer 3x a week and lost 130 lbs in 2 years. I changed jobs and didn't have the luxury of spending 3 hrs a day in the gym and got out of the habit. I have gained back half of that weight. Last week, I made it to the gym on three mornings. My goal this week is to make it 5x. I have to do something to get my body to lose weight as my insulin needs are just causing me to resist burning calories and I am tired of the continued pains and medical issues creeping up on me as I age. I don't like exercise and am not happy:cursing: about the need to do it daily but I am committed to getting healthier while I save $$ for sleeve surgery. Luckily my gym membership is only $11 a month for Supersport club at 24hrFitness. Is anyone else doing daily workouts and if so, what are you doing? Anyone want to jump on a bandwagon and post your efforts with me? We could us each other as support.:laugh0:

Sick And Less Than A Week To Surgery
beautifulnewme2012 replied to disneyteach's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told tylenol was ok...I am sorry to hear that! I am one week away with three people in my house that have colds...so I am praying I don't get it too!! -
I've had my band almost three years now and I can honestly say maybe once or twice I've leaned against something in front of me like the kitchen counter to wash the kitchen window over my sink and I leaned on my port. You notice it quick, doesn't hurt more uncomfortable and so you stop. Other than that I barely know it's there unless I go looking for it or I'm getting a fill. You shouldn't have to worry about it once you're healed :crying: You can definately do abdominal work etc. Will you notice the port....sometimes if you're building up that much muscle I would think you could but, as far as having to be extra careful because of it? I wouldn't think so but, best advice for that would be your doc. If you poke around in the before and after pics you'll see people in there that obviously have worked out pretty hard so I'm guessing they didn't have any issues  Best to ask your doc on that part of it. Good luck with your band journey!

Thank you for all of your feedback. I think i will go through the next session and get more of a vibe on him and then decide. Jadebrasil.. I live in Los Angeles and belong to 24 hr. Fitness... it is 150 for three sessions. He will write up a plan for me to stick to after those three sessions and give me goals to work towards. It is really a great thing to help push you a little harder than we typically push ourselves.

Hi Cervidae, My drain came out the next day while still in the hospital at the same time they removed the catheter. My instructions are to change the bandage every day for the week leading up to my follow up appointment. I've been told to walk 3-4 times a day and I've been doing three. My walk is like an old woman's shuffle right now but improving. I take the pain meds every 4 hours around the clock. I thought this would keep me up but I've been waking up to pee every 2 hours anyway. The first thing I ate was a sugar free popsicle. I had three small bites and was done. Next I had about 3 tablespoons of broth and was full. So far that's all I've eaten. The feeling of fullness is very different but I'm trying to pay attention so I don't vomit the first week as that can set back progress. I'm tired and nap day and night with no full sleep of the 6-8 hour variety. The thing I've found hardest is getting in and out of bed. I'm using the log roll technique which helps relieve some but not all the pressure on my stomach muscle. I won't lie. It hurts. But I'm getting better at it.

Starting pre-op diet and surgery prep next Monday!
MamaTo3inNH posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've got one week of food freedom, going to have a few food funerals and generally enjoy my last week of being fat. Isn't that an oxymoron? Anyway. Pre op diet starts Monday. And with that comes TONS of housework to a - get my house super clean and organized before I go out of commission and b - take my mind off my growling belly Any tips for getting the house (and three kids and hubby!!) ready to fend for themselves for 4-5 days? I'm freaking out... Hubby isn't really up to the task so I want to make things as easy as possible. All laundry will be caught up, I will have the younger two outfits put together for a week's time. Aside from clothing, I can't figure out what else I can do? He doesn't cook, I am going to make a pot of chop suey and make sure we have Mac n cheese cups and plenty of bread and Nutella and fruit cups for the girls... Any other helpful hints from mamas out there? -
I am three weeks from surgery and start my liquids tomorrow. Any suggestions or tricks to keep me on the wagon during this journey. I am both excited and nervous about making it through these next few weeks.

Hair Loss - Will it stop?
vagabond replied to RUKidding's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also am losing hair and have been for the past two months. My hair loss started right at three months after surgery. I have talked to my PCP. He said that the stress of surgery and rapid weight loss is most likely the cause since I lost 20 pounds in the first three weeks. I had test and everything was normal; thyroid, B-12, Iron, etc. There are other posts out here and they all say the same thing, after three months your hair will start to grow back and it will be a thick as it was before unless there really is a deficency so you might want to have the blood work just to make sure all is good. I am taking Biotin and using Nioxin shampoo. It seems to have slowed down the hair loss a little and I am at the two month point since the loss has started. I wish you luck, but I am confident that my hair, and yours too, will start to come back in. -
Summer temperatures mean moving everything outdoors, including your eats! Picnicking is one of the best parts of the season, and it’s a great way to involve the whole family while basking in nature’s beauty. There are three key factors to packing the perfect picnic: each dish should be able to be made ahead of time, not spoil quickly and be transported easily. Steer clear of heavy toppings, sticky sauces and mayo-based recipes—they’ll create a mess and attract insects; the latter can even pose a health risk. Instead, choose items that are easy to eat with your hands (or just with a fork—no knives allowed!) and will be safe to nibble on after an hour or two has passed (assuming you don’t leave the dishes out in the glaring sun—which is never a good idea, regardless of ingredients). My creative picnic recipes will have everyone at the table asking for more without guilt. Sabatogers / My Boss
violeteyes37 replied to deb_ladyrose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I had the worst of sabotagers, my own family including my mother. Im three years out from surgery and have gained back 30 lbs. Im still very happy with my weight loss but upset at the fact that when I was thinner they constantly told me that they thought that I had lost too much weight and that my face was too skinny and that I just didnt look right. Now that I have put back on some weight they comment on the fact that Im gaining my weight back. Now its a fight for me to get back the motivation that I once had. Dont let haters get to you. -
Protein Drinks
parisluver replied to Changing4Better's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone tried fat free frozen yogurt and blended it with the protein? I was going to try that and see if that was better. I bought the whey protein egg white protein. I'd have to have three shakes of it a day to get in enough protein with what I am drinking. I'll get more if I had some skim milk with it too. I am also having a hard time getting that many liquids down during the day. Just banded yesterday. -
Kaiser-So Cal///Meal replacement (Optifast) & Protein
BlaqBeary replied to BlaqBeary's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Mr. Mason Thanx for the response. I think the "anticipation" and eagerness to lose SOME weight is stressing me; especially this week. Besides reading and working my Options book, I also research the internet to find all info I can in preparation for this surgery; also post-paration (if this is a word, lol) .... Emotionally I am ready, but the mental part of me is the pre-surgery weight. I exercise (walk) daily. It is part of my day. Three 30 minute walks with three other co-workers is a ritual daily. Zumba class 2 nights a week. I moving but the scale is not. Now I will continue to work hard and go harder with all my might. Feet can't fail me and God will not either. Faith is all I have. -
I am now three months out from surgery. It really has gotten better. I would say the first 6 weeks were the worst as far as emotions go. However, I have noticed in the last couple of weeks, that I have not been nearly as sensitive to things and that I have not even wanted to eat when I get upset. It will get better, you just have to give yourself time to adjust to all of the change.

Awaiting approval but tentatively scheduled for 7/23!!?
Born in Missouri replied to TaylorMade4One's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Do you know if your surgeon requires a one week or a two-week liquid diet? I don't think you're doing it for "no reason". The fact that you're willing to jumpstart the process shows how serious and committed you are. You'd be surprised by how many people aren't as motivated as you are. That's a good sign that you are going to be a big success story! My surgery was tentatively scheduled before I was approved, too. Insurance companies often say they take weeks to approve you, but often the turnaround is much, much quicker. It only makes sense for them to be conservative with their approval timeframe. At times, there may actually be a backlog of paperwork awaiting evaluation. My paperwork was sent in on a Friday, and I was approved on Tuesday of the following week. The doctor's insurance person/staff tends to know which carriers take longer and which don't. I have UnitedHealthCare, PPO. I think it's great that your doctor's office got you locked into for that date. How disappointed you would have been if they had required approval first. What if the approval had been received in time, but your surgery date had been given to someone else. On my surgery date, my surgeon had two other patients. I was number three in his queue. Ask if you'll be his/her number 1, 2, 3, etc. The smaller the number, the earlier you have to show up for surgery. The first two cases ahead of me turned out to be complicated cases. I was tentatively scheduled for 12:30pm, but ended up on the table at 5pm. I was slightly disappointed, until I asked myself, "Hey, would you want Dr. S to rush his surgery with you just because someone else was anxious for their surgery to begin?" My answer was, "No." -
If I'm going to pb, it will ALWAYS happen if I eat dinner after my workout. I simply cannot eat after an intense workout, my stomach closes up really tight for about three or four hours. I need a ticking off becuase what tends to happen is that I dont snack before the workout, vowing to eat a healthy dinner and then I dont eat the dinner, I just dont want it. So I workout hard and go without eating. Is it any wonder I'm thin but still too flabby for my liking?

day after complications
isit5yet replied to tk0517's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd call your doctor tomorrow. I'm surprised you weren't given pain meds, and Aleve is an NSAID which I hear is a no no. Every dr is different, so I don't want to be too harsh with my judgement. I was taking my liquid Lortab three times a day for the first 5 days. Maybe I'm a wus With no spirometer, practice taking a deep breath for like 10 sections to slowly open up your lungs. -
Omg!!! Tonight I realized that one of my fave foods is a perfect sleeve food!!....CRABS!! (or crablegs!--whichever!). I bought some frozen snow crab legs from the store and steamed up three clusters. I could only eat 1 1/2 clusters & I was stuffed! They were soooo yummy!! And they are perfect for the sleeve because they are full of protein, easy to chew (tender), and they force you to eat slow! I'm so happy I discovered this tonight! I was getting kinda tired of tuna!

Ok, I did it. I gave in. I got some frozen yogurt, about three ounces. It was satisfying and tasty, no ill effects. In the future maybe a sugar free fudge Popsicle would work- it really wasn't that much better! But I had built it up in my mind... And nothing else would do. Thanks for your thoughts!

h-pylori bacteria in my gut
thisfathasgot2go replied to sk110857's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is more common than you think. I was in a three month health education class required for surgery. Midway through the class everyone had to get labs and stool samples analyzed. I would say that about 4-5 people or 25% of my classmates had it and had to take the meds required and then be retested. If you still had it, they had to do more meds. They would not allow the person to have the surgery unless they were cleared of it. -

Im five months out and have had a half dozen if that. No issues and tastes the same. Just keeping them in moderation. Used to drink three coke zeros a day before surgery.
