Newly Banded--Similar Pain Anyone?
cindyg1212 replied to tommaney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi fellow new banders, I was banded last week, 11/1. The gas pains the first few days were excrutiating. The vicodan was the only thing that worked. Question tommaney, are you taking prevacid pills or did you find chewables? My doc said not to try to swallow anything bigger than a tic tac ever. But I've been finding that he is stricter than a lot of the other doctors. -
Limbo-time before surgery
wanabthin replied to Bandwagon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let me just say that if I had to wait two months for surgery, I would have probably gained about 30lbs! Once I had my consultation and the surgery was scheduled, I had 4 weeks until I had to start the preop diet so in my head I was thinking, "might as well eat now, I won't be able to for 6 weeks" so I ate anything/everything and gained 10lbs! The good thing was I lost 9 of it during my 2 week preop diet, the surgery went great and I am down another 3lbs since Friday. I think a lot of us go on pre surgery binges but look at it logically, if we didn't have issues with food to begin with, we wouldn't need the band. Just try to keep in mind the more you put on the more you have to take off. On the other hand, I had pretty much had all my favorites and while the preop diet was HARD, the postop had been fairly easy. Best of luck! -
I'm one week pre-op away from surgery and yes I am a little nervous... not about the band, just about the surgery itself. Stuff like, what if they find something else wrong while doing the surgery.. or what if there is some awful complication during the surgery. As far as the failure rate, I look at it this way... other than some major reason like my body rejecting the band, the success is up to me. It's my decision what and how much food I put into my body, I control my diet not the band. To use an weightlifting term, the band is just there as a "spotter" for me.... in case a try to do too much! Every one has there own way of using the band... that is just how I am planning to use mine. Best of luck in your journey!!!!!!

Has anyone here had a leak and how soon did you find out? How many weeks post op were you?

You might want to lower your expectations? 1-2 lbs average per week is normal. 10 lbs is above average imo.

Losing Too Much Weight During Pre-Op Diet?
takingmeback posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My dr put me on the 2 week pre-op mostly liquid diet, and asked that I try to lose 10 lbs before surgery. Well after 3 days I've lost about 7.5 lbs. I'm fairly close to the 40 BMI cutoff (I only had 15 lbs before going under 40) and am afraid that if I go under the 40 BMI that insurance won't cover the procedure. Has anyone run into this? I have BCBS of MA if that matters. -
Back to work after surgery...
blashlee replied to blashlee's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My bosses know and three of my co-workers that I'm very close to know. It isn't a secret, if someone asks me about it I'm okay with sharing. I've been finding it really empowering to share. Mostly I just feel really on display right now LOL it makes me a touch uncomfortable, it isn't something I'm used to unless I put myself in the position to be noticed. -

WENDY ANN replied to ShannonMarie's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Shannon Marie. I hope you are still going thru this, I have been going since August to the seminar and then the other hoops they make you go thru. I am on my third visit to the diet Dr. tomorrow. so three more visits which include the physic visit nutionist then the Dr Stanish. So hopefully I can get this done this spring. Let me know how far you are into it. Thanks, Wendy Ann from Hobart. -
I was banded 2/13 just seen my nutrionist i was told to start full liquids, cream soups and since i was already eating a spoon of applesauce in order to take my meds she said i could also have purees/mushies since nothing has made me sick but taking it slowing had some cottage cheese and a bit of avocado after almost 4 weeks of liquids that meal was amazing!

Music lover, I feel your frustration. My understanding is that losing slowly is a sure sign that your are losing from fat stores and not from muscle, this is a good thing. The hardest thing about this forum is that you DO compare yourself with others, it's only natural. But the BEST thing is that there is always some one in the same boat, they can make you feel better. Although I am so far a slow loser, I have never lost so consistently, in all of my previous attempts, of which there have been too numerous to even attempt to count. It is easier for me to sort of ignore how quickly or slowly other people are losing because most of you are in lbs and I work in kilos, I have to open my trusty conversion app to work it out! You are probably also having a bad day, week or month and need a little extra loving. I hope you can feel it coming from me.

I would definitly add some exercise. It really makes a big difference. I did not have to do the pre-op diet and have lost 39 pounds so far. Sometimes i know i eat too much, but with going to the gym five times a week i am still losing. Donna

I'm so glad to have found this forum! I was banded 5/19/2007. I am going in for my fourth fill tomorrow. (First two fills essentially resulted in no saline in the band. With an initial fill of 2.0cc and a second fill of 4.0cc in a 9.75 Inamed band, I wound up with 0.6cc. My surgeon did a fluro, fill to 2.6cc and checked the following day. No leakage noted. I still feel restriction 7-8 weeks later.) I'm a bit discouraged since I've lost approximately 37 lbs total including the pre-op diet that I followed for 4 weeks prior to surgery. Most of the weight loss was during the pre-op and liquid phases following surgery. Mostly I'm working to maintain the loss and fluctuate around a 4-6 lb range. I have been tracking calories and trying to keep to around 1200 per day with 25% Protein, 25% fat (max), and 50% carbs. I haven't been exercising at all. (Beginning BMI was 52.) I've noticed that even though I am noticing restriction early in the day or at the beginning of a meal, once I am able to get things down I can eat quite a lot. I'm not sure what 'packing the pouch' is, but is that what I'm doing when I eat a sizable amount? It is weird because sometimes I am PBing, though that usually only happens now when I'm not paying attention to how much or how fast I'm eating and don't chew thoroughly. If I do PB, I stop eating and then drink warm liquids a few hours afterwards to sooth my stoma. From reading other posts, it looks like I need to (1) keep on top of fills to achieve good restriction, (2) track my food intake until I hit the 'sweet spot' and feel full, and (3) begin exercising. Does anyone out there have anything else they can suggest or recommend?

Hi Guys I am very very frustrated and I want to cry. I had my surgery on April 17 and I have only lost 30lbs since then. I have lost a total of 45lbs since pre surgery but I am sososososo frustrated. I have not lost a poun din two months and it seems everytime I am on this site everyone is losing crazy amounts except me. I even took up taek won do a month ago and have been going 3-4 times a week for an hour. I paid $16,000 only to fail again. I miss real food I feel like I have not had a good meal in months. I have 7 CC in a 10CC band and I am not sure how much more I need. Can someone help? Feeling like a failure right about now. Thanks for listening.

I had my surgery on June 10th and they stopped my birth control pill altogether (I'm getting old!). Anyway, I had a pseudo period that week, but have not had one since. I will be 7 weeks out tomorrow and should have had one by now. Not really looking forward to it though because the whole reason I went on the pill to begin with was that I got such horrible cramps that I would physically get sick.

Ok, my third week and I'm not losing weight. A bit frustrating because I want to get to my onderland mark. I'm slowly slowing down. Any suggestions to get things kick started? I'm down 81 pounds. Surgery was July 12th. So not too bad!

Picking a Surgeon or Clinic in Minnesota
snochick2005 replied to jjsinmn1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I also highly recommend park Nicollet and Dr Jones!! They are fantastic! The program is set up very well and they make everything simple to complete. Everyone I have worked with there from schedulers to nurses to hospital staff and doctors have all been amazing! Dr Jones is a great surgeon! Rated a top doctor for general surgery for a few years now. I actually requested him when I needed my gallbladder out and he fit me into his booked schedule when I needed it moved up a few weeks. He's a very caring and competent surgeon! His WLS stats are great which he's happy to share with you. I am extremely happy with my decision to go through them! -
Going to consult...very nervous
StacyinDE replied to PandaBear88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
PandaBear, I think your reservations are normal. Going 4-6 weeks with no solid foods is a pretty scary thought, well, it was before I got banded. Once you can eat solids, you can eat Peanut Butter, I do all the time with no problems. Shrimp is another story, it's a very individual thing. If it's cooked perfectly and not at all rubbery or tough I can usually eat it, though it has to be chewed very, very well to not cause a problem. The post op diet for me was 4 weeks of liquids, which wasn't as bad as it could have been. The first week was great, I wasn't hungry at all, 1 oz of crystal light and I was full for an hour or two. After the swelling went down and I was hungrier, it was harder, doable but as you may see it referred to on here, I was in "bandster hell", no restriction but my full appetite. Again, doable, but it sucked. Others on here didn't have that problem and again, it's a very individual thing. My aunt was banded May 1st and didn't have bandster hell, she had no problem doing the four weeks of liquids. The thought of not being able to eat what I wanted when I wanted and how much I wanted scared the crap out of me and I think we all have those doubts and reservations. But, the desire to be healthy and lets face it, thin, were pretty strong motivators for me. Especially when I developed some pretty serious health problems within the six months or so before I was banded. But, eating what I wanted, when I wanted and how much I wanted was what put me in that condition and got me up to 258 pounds. I have no regrets about having the band. I'm happy I did it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Go to your consultation, read the posts on here, talk to your doctor and go from there! It's normal to be nervous and have second thoughts, you just have to figure out what is going to be the best thing for you. Take care! -
Help......just banded, need advise
lianna replied to tennis girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found that I couldnt drink anything cold for the first few weeks. (and to this day cold drinks restrict my band and warm ones open it up) Warm broth or tea would gurgle right through but my protein drinks or iced crystal light seemed to go down very very slowly, and a cold protein drink was actually painful at times. Are you able to drink warm liquids easier? If so try having your protein drink at room temperature....it sound odd, but whatever works. If warm or cold make no difference to you then disregard the above advice, lol! -
I am going to my consultation on July 2nd. It has taken me a while to actually decide to meet with the surgeon. I am paying out of pocket and metting with him is $260! I just received the information they sent in the mail and I am getting pretty nervous about the surgery. I read something that says you souldn't eat shrimp or peanutbuter. The peanutbutter makes sense but these are my favorite foods. :think I am also really scared about the post-op diet. No solids for 4-6 weeks?!?!?! AHH I really hope I can make it. If I am having resevations about these seemingly little things, does that mean I shouldn't do the surgery? Any words of wisdom you might have would be helpful. Thanks for listening to my rant.:faint:

Banded 07/02...Waiting for my first fill... and HUNGRY!!!
Nuali replied to Susie Girl 75's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doc waits 8 weeks post op to do the first fill. I was like you, very hungry and kind of worried about weight gain. Hang in there. You really do need the healing time before your first fill. It will come soon enough!! I had my first fill last Thursday and WOW! I already have restriction. So, hang in there. Nuali
