I'm so sorry that you're in so much pain. My stomach too is very tight and I've been taking my pain medicine every four hours consistently. The doctor also prescribed something for the gas, maybe you can call and have them put a prescription for you if gas x is not working. Hang in there, I'm only on day three but I have got to hope that it's gonna get better.

@dreukeepr I thought the same thing but ended up taking off all week. I think you will need to give yourself time to heal and you will still be exhausted from the surgery and meds

Can You Feel The Band?
Padanelle replied to thinoneday's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About a week ago I experienced a NSV: being able to feel my port! Prior to that, I hadn't a clue where it was. I have read that people can feel the liquid moving theough the tube when they have a fill, but I don't feel a thing! -
Pre op diet...I cheated, well just a little...
kiz replied to LILYTAM's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Almost anyone who has significant weight to lose and has started a new diet loses several pounds the first week of a diet. You've been doing this for several months, so it's not surprising you didn't get that initial exciting loss. Don't feel disheartened. Good luck here on out. -
Yea! I just got approved last week too. I will be banded April 10th. Feels like forever, but I'm sure it will be here in no time! When is your surgery date? I think it will be worth the wait...it certainly can't be worse! Good luck!

Hi JaxBandster, Congrats on your surgery - glad to read that you're doing well! As for the hoarseness, I think you're right about the breathing tube. I've not had hoarseness with this surgery, but back in September I had surgery involving a breathing tube, and I was hoarse for a couple of weeks. I asked the doctor about it, and he said it was due to the tube and that it would resolve. But, it is strange that it's just starting several days post surgery -maybe worth a call to the surgeon's office just in case. Best of luck with your post-op diet....I'm starting week 2 of mine tomorrow. -Susanne

Depressed because of weight gain
leag78 replied to Tess White's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You are only 4 weeks out, and your body is still healing. Your weight will fluctuate in the beginning because your body is still trying to recover. I think by your sixth week, you will be fine. Just try to focus on protein and water, as they will be your best friend in this journey and your weight will fall. You're just going through the healing process unfortunately right now. -
Saltine Crackers??????????
LDNurse replied to WendyRae's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks out and my doctor told me I could have crackers aven during this soft phase-but I had to chew, chew, chew! -
I have a VG band put in July '06. I had two fills in TJ, but still had no restriction. Went to a fill Dr. in Ohio in October, who filled me to 6.2 cc. I was a little tight, but waited until beginning of Jan. 07 to have .5cc taken out. I was having pain and back aches went I ate solid foods. Three weeks later, I had another .5cc taken out (5.2cc fill now). It has been exactly one week now, and I've been taking Prilosec OTC and Mylanta, but still cannot eat any solid foods without getting a sour stomach, and having nausea all the time practically. I'm so worried, and I don't know if this is a sign of slippage. The doctor said that if I couldn't had trouble after 3 weeks, to come back for an upper GI (I think that's the test)...but I"m miserable...then, again, could I just have the flu?? I've lost 60lbs...so, that's a good thing!! Please, someone help me... Jodie

Crohn's Disease and Lap-Band
PrincipalsOffice posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Crohn's disease and will soon (2 weeks!!) be having Lap-Band. While searching for posts regarding this, I only found some from several years ago (2006) indicating Lap-Band and Crohn's was a NO NO. My surgeon did not seem worried.... Anyone else out there? -
I am supposed to have a consult with Dr. Provost tomorrow the 14th...someone from his office just called and said that he was sick all last week and was not sure when he was coming back to work. They switched me to Dr. Rivas and now my appointment has been pushed back to the 21st. I have already waited a month and a half for Dr. Provost because he's one of the best in Dallas/Fort Worth...and now I'm not seeing him but one of his colleagues. I don't know how to react to this. If I insisted on seeing Dr. Provost it would be late February when I got in to see him. I don't want to wait forever...but I don't want to go with the wrong doctor. HELP!!! Has anyone had this happen before has anyone been banded by Dr. Rivas? Thanks for any help!!!

Ok, so I am supposed to have my surgery next Wednesday, November 7th. This has been a long process from the start because the hospital doing my procedure just started doing lap bands, and they didn't really have their shit together to begin with (pardon my language). I went to my seminar at the beginning of August, and they just finally finalized the surgeon fees 2 days ago, and finalized the hospital fees last week. They also made a mistake on when I wanted my surgery, when I told them from the beginning that I wanted it the week of the 5th because that's the only time I have off work. (Did I mention I have also worked at this hospital for almost 10 years and have never seen such disorganization on their part?) Long story short, it was conveyed to me by the bariatric center that since I am self pay, I would have to put a down payment down, and would be able to pay the rest off with a payment plan. I went to see the surgeon yesterday, and they were going to make me pay their fees upfront. I was like "Whoa-that's not what has been told to me for the last few months, and I never gave the bariatric center the impression I would be able to pay you upfront. It was my impression that they had spoken with you specifically about me and it was agreed upon between the surgeons and the bariatric center that I would be able to do a payment plan." So, the financial services rep went and talked to someone, and came back, and said that was fine, since I had already gone this far and seen the doctor, that they would let me pay the remainder off over a 12 month period. I signed a contract stating as such. So, this morning, I went and had all my preop tests-chest xray, upper GI series, pulmonary testing, EKG, labs, and a meeting with the dietician. So I'm psyched, right? Then I leave the hospital, and my cell phone rings. It is the financial services girl from the surgeons office telling me that she talked my surgery over with the doctor, and that they are not going to let me do the payment plan, but are instead requiring that I pay upfront. Granted, they did offer to give a discount, but I still do not have that money lying around, and made it clear from the start that I did not. So I am extremely frustrated right now. Now I feel like I can't necessarily even trust the surgeon doing my surgery or the bariatric center. My grandma offered to loan me the required money, but I am having such mixed feelings about what transpired that I don't even know what to do. Sorry for the lengthy post, but does anyone have an opinion on this?? Thanks! :help:

Just banded-Introduction
RestlessMonkey replied to medford's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wow I don't want to sound holier than thou....I'm morbidly obese and definitely have eaten too much for years. But why on earth would you eat pizza so close to your surgery? If your surgeon didn't tell you what to eat, then you need to find a good support group. If you were told to follow a post-op diet, why try to circumvent it? You may need a little therapy work so the band will work for you. I know our surgeon requires people to have an appt with a therapist 4-6 weeks post op. Maybe something like that would help you. It is miserable to be hungry, but worse to damage yourself internally! -
its not just WLS patients who lose their hair. close friend of my was seriously ill and hospitalized for two weeks. at around 4 months her hair started to fall out and got remarkedly thin. she was told different things by different specialists but I think it was due to poor nutrition while she was so ill ? by the time it falls out isnt already too late?

I Am SO Mad at Myself
Oregondaisy replied to baydaz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had months go by with no weight loss. It's extremely frustrating. However, now that nearly a year has passed, I am down 55 lbs. I tried dieting for 3 years, going to the gym and exercising every day, before I was banded. I would lose a couple lbs during the week, and gain it back every weekend. You have your tool, and it will work for you if you have the right fill. But unfortunately, the band does not help with eating chocolate. I am not saying that you eat chocolate. I am saying I do. But when I don't, I lost slowly. I didn't though, until I got the right fill. -
Help, I am 6 1/2 weeks post op and continue to experience left shoulder pain almost every day for 2-5 hours. I don't know what brings it on, happens before OR after eating. And I haven't figured out what to do to get it to go away. I tried Ibuprophen, tylenol, heat, massage, standing, sitting, laying. Any ideas? My doctor said maybe there was some swelling under the diaphragm that causes the refered pain but didn't know why, said the surgery went perfectly? Have I traded one problem for another? Diane:help:

Donna, Did they send you home with a menu plan and list of foods, etc? I just copied the menu in the above post from the sheets they gave me after surgery. Yesterday I substituted oatmeal for the liquid yogurt, so probably had a few more calories than that, but it still isn't much. It sounds to me like I just need to add in a few more small meals, and pitch the menu. After next week, they have more foods on the menu, but I'm concerned about the pain from just trying rice, and thinking I might need a little more time to reduce the swelling first. I really like Dr. Zapata. He was so kind. I had a rough go in the hospital, vomiting everything, including ice chips for the first 24 hours. He was very involved, trying hard to figure out a solution. (The solution came when they stopped putting meds that made me sick in the IV -- lol) I would recommend him to anyone. Kristine

i am 5 days post op. i was not what i would consider a sweet eater, although i should have probably evaluated that further because i was a sweet drinker. i was also glucose intolerant, so the few weeks before being banded i craved sweet drinks like crazy, and drank them. so this is my problem. my blood sugar has been very low, so my doctor told me to drink some juice yesterday. well, i had juice again today and, unfortunately, i think today i will exceed 800 calories (most of it on gatorade, juice, etc.). no, i am craving things. i cheated and had 2 mini sweetarts today. ugh!!! i never realized that the calories added up so fast until today after i had already had my juice, my gatorade, and my carnation instant Breakfast. lol --i have not been doing that every day. is any one else having this problem. if so, do you have any suggestions? i know it is just a matter of refocusing, or eating something healthy that is sweet to satisfy that taste. my dinner tonight will push me over the calorie threshold. i'm having pureed great northern Beans...nothing more but Water for me today.

Still feel hungry? I DO :(
123crod replied to aly.smoot's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only have 2cc and seem to be fine that is only my first fill. They say sometimes it takes some time to kick in even up to 2 weeks so hang in there maybe restriction will come. Let us know. Drink lots and lots of water. If you like coffee with FF creamer and some equal that kills any hunger I have. -
I made it to the banded side of life!!!!
JosieK replied to CantB2noty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi cantb, i also was extremely tired after my lapband. it took 2 weeks before i felt like myself again. just get as much rest as you can.... good luck with your band.... josie -
My doctor only requires a 3 day pre-op diet of 2 protein shakes and one small 300 cal. meal a day. It seems everyone else on a 2 or 1 week pre-op diet. My surgery date is Aug. 17. I am thinking I should go ahead and start my diet now. Or at least cut way back in what i am eating. I see him for a pre-surgery consultation on Aug 6, so I guess i will ask him then? What is everyone else's pre-op diet like?

Sleep apnea and surgery
lonestar5212 replied to lonestar5212's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kacee Thanks for the response. I have to go back in two weeks for my CPAP machine. My paperwork for approval won't be submitted until Jan. 20th, so I think I will use it until then for sure. That is great there has been such a big improvement for you. I had heard that once I have the surgery and start losing weight, that the apnea will improve. I am happy to hear that it does actually happen. I also have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and now sleep apnea. I am glad I was tested, maybe it will help my cause of trying to get approved for the surgery. And congratulations on the great accomplishment of your weight loss!! -
I have Aetna and they reqiure three months of PCP monitored diet, psych eval, etc. Well, on Sat during my first visit to my PCP, she looked at me like I had two heads and told me that she doesn't get reimbursed for "weight loss visits". Then she said that she can't get reimbursed for the EKG they did because there was no reason to have one done (Pre-op is not a reason). After a lot of explaining, I convinced her to see me 2 more times (self pay) and she said that she would see me just to agree with whatever the nutritionist is saying. So for my other visits (abdominal ultrasound, bloodwork, chest x-ray, etc.) do I have to "fake symptoms" so they will cover it? I have an open access plan, so getting the PCP to make a referral isn't an obsticle (thank goodness because she's doing minimal work on this). I need to know if Aetna will pay for my other visits to specialists.

Hi there! As several other folks said, you don't have any restriction yet, so it can be a "hungry time." All I can offer for advice is that my doctor told me to take in 70-90 grams of Protein daily through liquids for several weeks after surgery (in 3 "meals" per day). I drank Protein shakes and some other liquids that were fortified with protein. I got a box with samples of these liquid Proteins prior to surgery (hot chocolate, fruit punch, tomato Soup, etc.). I was told not to "eat" between meals--that's when I sipped on the plain Water. I was also allowed to have other liquids in addition to water like other folks mentioned (sugar-free popsicles, Crystal Light, and sugar-free pudding). Check with your doctor before changing what you are doing. Remember that you paid them for their services, so they should be there to advise you if you experience any problems--don't be shy about asking questions! Keeping my protein intake up worked out quite well for me and I didn't start getting really, really hungry until close to my first fill 5-6 weeks after surgery. Good luck and let us know if things improve for you!
