    Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

MacMadame, You are not letting me down AT ALL!! I have felt as though I am letting you down since I have gone into my nothing mode. Keep it up! You are doing great!! Georgia, I have never lost any fluid that I know of. I am doing good today. I am a little sore. After this "minor" revision I have 33 staples. My doctor actually did revision on 2 areas instead of one. I am very pleased. I have done very well with my eating today and actually feel a little more focused. I am going to take the rest of the week to recover from my procedure and then I will start my new routine on Monday. My goal will be consistancy. I am actually looking forward to getting going!

    Can’t win!

Hi. I’m home as of Friday afternoon. Had a really bad two days in the hospital. The lacerations are more and deeper and they took the beginning of my intestines where the revision was. He felt moving it mid intestines was the best option. It was the “y” area of the RNY that was giving me an issue and was flipping or twisting. So he moved it dead center on my small intestine. So far I’m okay. No bile vomit and nausea. Horrendously sore. My abdominal wall is a mess for sure. I had some bottom end issues as I think i was stopped up and gassy. Surgeon said use an enema today. So far so good. Had to move stuff out. It was horrendous. Worse then giving birth and felt like I was giving birth from there hahahahah Otherwise so far so good. Ty so very much for thinking of me. It’s so appreciated.

I really feel good. I may not be exercising real consistantly till after the move. There is just so much to get done. Feeling a little overwhelmed, but ready to get out to our place!!

Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

As you know VegasOne I will be there the 28th, surgery the 29th and I will stay two nights at hospital due to me having lap band to sleeve revision. So I will be at hotel day of your surgery. We are scheduled to leave on the 3rd. How are you doing so far on the preop diet? My husband is struggling but hanging right in there. He's lost 17 in a week on the phase1 Atkins diet. Next week starts his 2 weeks of liquids. Eeek!! That's going to be rocky two weeks in our household!!
  5. Wow, have you gone meatless too?? I am a Sleeve to RNY revision. I've always LOVED meat and milk products and eggs and butter etc etc. All 40 years of my life I have never gone without it! And I ate it with my band, and with my Sleeve. So here's how the Vegan happened. My doc had me on clear liquids for 3 weeks with no diary...then told me to add back in eggs, and grounded meat. And I LOVE yogurt, milk, cream, Cheese OMG, on my last trip from France I had a WHOLE suitecase Packed with cheese from Hard to downright Stinky! I'm a certified Cheesaholic! But, I survived the 3 weeks without it, and without much veggies, fruits etc. But I was tired, and felt malnutritioned and unhealthy and constipated etc. Which is kinda to be expected. But seeing as this is not my first rodeo, I wanted to listen to my body more and not repeat the same mistakes. So...I started to educate myslef of nutrition nightly to see how best I can support my body through the healing process and nourish it while loosing weight. One profound influence was watching the documentary "What the Health" on Netflix (I so recommend you watch that!). So I replaced my morning Egg (s) with my Green Smoothie (which seamlessly incorporates my 1 a day Bariatric Vitamin chew from ProCar Bariatric health and the rest was history. Like right now, post my dinner, I'm not just feeling full, I'm feeling Satisfied and harmonious. Hard to explain but there is a difference. Like I said, I know it's not for everyone, but I'm super excited about the results, not just in the scales, so if anyone is cooking a vegetable or even a meat, I would love to be inspired. Because that said, it's not like I'll never touch another chicken or egg again, just for now, I'm doing so well without, trying not to tinker with the formula. Veggie or not, we need to learn how to cook again and enjoy a positive relationship with food again, but with Bariatric friendly healthy food, so we don't feel deprived and one fine day when we can eat more, start slipping into old habits. So were you Veterinarian before or thinking of becoming? Would love to hear more about your veggie meals. I try to post mine
  6. I had my revision to bypass on 6/26, and I was so proud of how well I rocked it. I was zooming those halls and drinking like a champ. My drain couldn’t come out, as it was draining too much. A home nurse came out twice and still had to leave the drain in. I started having awful pain on Sunday and finally went to ER yesterday. The drain was kept in too long and got an infection. The pain radiates up to my chest and collarbone so I am kind of miserable. I keep getting small fevers but am hopeful the antibiotics kick in soon. I want to go back to zooming around!

How was your 5:2 day today?

Neck Wattle cure - please do share! I don't actually think I need a facelift YET, and i am afraid of the scars and more importantly the numbness, but I would love to do a wattle reduction! Cathy, good luck - hope the house stuff sails along smoothly. I admit I am not fasting of late. I am down in my bounce range again barely - low 150s - but have kiddo home from college. I do want to take a run at getting more solidly into the 140s but thinking that will be more successful once he is gone. The other day I was looking at my chubby thighs, knowing that the chub is mostly skin (I had the small thigh lift which was very much a partial solution) wondering if i should revise to the long thigh lift. My surgeon finally sent me the mark up photos... oh good heavens, wowza, even I forgot how much I have improved. It helped me reset my brain a little. Like wow, how far have I come???? I never really shared photos of how awful my thighs were pre-plastics - some of the photos I had were taken at beneficial angles. These photos are shocking even to me. April 14 will be my 6 month plastics and I hope to have actually put together some sort of photo collage really showing side by side. I don't have any pre weight loss photos that show any skin at all... but seeing what I looked like pre weight loss, then post weight loss (without spanx), then post plastics is amazing. when I was preop, I had no idea this was even possible...

How was your 5:2 day today?

Its been a long time since I have checked in - as usual Looks like there havent been a lot of folks responding lately on this thread but thought I would give you guys an update. As it turns out I have been having some ongoing problems that will require som more surgery. I have always had terrible gerd prior to and it seemed to get worse after the sugery. My lucky husband had his resolve completely after his vsg and hernia repair. I started seeing another bariatric doc last year, as my doc had moved to another practice and we moved as well. To make a very long story shorter - and the number of tests I've had done dwarf the first surgery - I will be having revision surgery on 11/22/16 - 11 days from now. I have a significant hiatal hernia, a stricture, and various other sundry things that will be repaired - gallbladder out and removal of stray sutures (which is goofy but that's what the photos after the last egd) My new surgeon is going to revise my sleeve a traditional Duodenal Switch. I had gained back about 30 lbs from my lowest weight. And it took just about a year to recover from the total knee replacement - what a nightmare that is, but at least I can walk again. Hopefully the hips and back wont hurt as much soon. Wishing everyone well and hope everyone is happy and healthy

How was your 5:2 day today?

Oh my gosh so much to catch up on... From memory here goes... Cathy and Coops...I am SO JELLY! OMG love the photo of you both. Wish I could have been there!!!!! Coops...omg you look awesome in Paris, just fantastic...you are so cute and I love your red converse shoes! Sarah I'm sorry about your MIL/FIL your Dad and now your hubby. Wow when it rains it pours! Hugs to you. Denise, I tend to agree that a pregnant 53 year old sounds *almost* too crazy to be true. I suppose it *could* happen but it just seems so so so unlikely. I wonder about the mental state of this woman and if it really is true, if I were Bill I would be demanding MORE information. Like I'm sure they can't do a DNA test while in utero, BUT what about can he TALK to her Dr. can she forward her medical records, etc. I almost want to say he should hire a lawyer or a Private Investigator or something because I'm just highly suspicious of this woman. I want a happy ending for you and Bill and she seems to be swooping in determined to take you both of course. But glad you have had a good vacation, that sounds like you aren't letting this get in the way of being together and enjoying each other's company. Georgia, that tornado and horrid weather is awful. I know some people who were directly hit but somehow their houses survived while neighboring ones did not. So sad. Glad you are safe...and love that cute hat picture too! Sheryl, thank you soooooooo much for all the info on the post. I can no longer see it and totally missed it. I knew that Susan and Irene were both going to convert to bypass but I had NO idea they thought this was the fault of Dr. Aceves. I honestly thought it was because they were sick of the regain and they had the acid issues so they saw the revision as a way to tackle both at once...get rid of the regain and then cut down on the acid issues. But that sure is a complete turnaround from HELPING people have surgery in MX to STEERING people away. I guess all of us can only tell OUR story and not point fingers but I guess the finger pointing is probably what got the thread locked/deleted. I also remember Dr. Aceves as one who made smaller sleeves...which I know for a fact my surgeon tries to avoid. I think he made our sleeves a bit too big as I know a lot of people who never reached their goal (me included) but I don't BLAME him or BLAME the sleeve, it is what it is. I do have restriction when I eat protein and notsomuch when I eat crap, BUT THAT IS EVERYONE no matter WHAT size their sleeve is. So while I think my surgeon tends to err on the side of going a bit larger I think he does it to avoid complications due to the sleeve. I know personally for me and also for my husband (who is also sleeved by my surgeon) we never had any sort of heartburn BEFORE or AFTER the sleeve, no bile, no reflux NOTHING ever. So are we just lucky? I just don't think you can blame things all on ONE person or ONE surgery. Some people had never had reflux in their life and then have WLS and it happens. Some have it, have WLS and it gets BETTER. So how do you figure all of that out? The big question is Susan okay now???? I have not been around much at all, way way way too busy. My oldest daughter (age 13) has taken on too much at school. She is in school volleyball, National Junior Honor Society, (which my youngest was just accepted to also!), a Sisterhood, Yearbook staff and then tried out for and was awarded a spot for the spring musical ...NOT onstage but as a "pit band" member, she plays the flute. First performance tonight and this past week has been verging on PURE crazy the amount of rehearsals they have to do. And she is lucky she is NOT onstage as the "actors" have to do makeup and costume for their rehearsals...at least she can just wear jeans because no one sees the band and orchestra. Oh they are doing The Sound of Music and she has a solo for the song, "I am sixteen, going on seventeen...." that high pitched part is her solo. OH MY! I'm excited to see all her hard work pay off but she has been literally running on empty which means the rest of us are too. My eating has been terrible and I can't remember my last FAST I would literally have to search through posts here to see when it was...maybe 5 weeks ago? UGH UGH UGH!

How was your 5:2 day today?

Susan, the re-sleeve I've done a lot of reading here on the forum and the one thing that I notice is that sometimes band to sleeve revisions to seem to have as much restriction as a virgin sleeve? Maybe Jane you can speak to that.. M2G, Ugh two girls sick no fun.. My son is 11 I noticed this girl make a bee line for him last month at the thanksgiving feast... Then I saw her again at his side chatting him up at honor roll.. I ask him about her and said I think she likes you. He said I was crazy hehehe.. But then came home and said I was right hence the new clothes. Now 11 is young for girlfriends but when you kid has Tourette's.... Well they are treated different Oh and size five fingers??? OMG that's small! Oh and thank you guys for the compliments yes looking in that store mirror I wasn't upset and that feels good Oh yes coops I love the green of that sweater too! Cathy, I'm sorry your going through back pain. I think that the worse kind of pain there is there just seems to be no relief Sarsar!! Look at you !!!!!! Tiny and cute Oh I'm an old mom I had them much later..

I had a really complicated surgery, and losts of recovery issues (I was revised from band to sleeve with a TON of scar tissue...) and I would still do it again!

    OCTOBER 2014

So I'm about to be told a whiner so bear with me. I have hit another intermission has been a week since I've lost anything besides the 4 pounds I lost briefly after my last intermission. Ugh. It seems like I might be one of the slow revision losers that has been mentioned before. Plus it seems that eating At work will become a chore. We only ever get 30 minutes to eat at a time. I may have to ask my boss if I can take an extra 10 to really focus on eating.
  15. Thanks I see its fairly common to stall around this time. I am waiting for it to kick back in ! I see you were a revision too ! thanks

I am ten years! I hope that with that much time I won't lose my weight as slowly as some revisions say that they encounter with their new procedures.

    Death

That is really horrible to hear about your friend. I am sorry for your loss and your friend's family's loss. But, question, she had bypass then the sleeve? Not possible. Perhaps they did a revision or something on her pouch or intestines to correct damage. All surgical interventions carry risks, and revision/corrective surgeries even more so unfortunately. The best way you can honor your friend's memory is by taking care of yourself, physically and emotionally, and making the most out of your weight loss journey and your life in general. Each day is a blessing and an opportunity. Best wishes.

I'm done telling folks. They don't get it

I'm currently starting the process for a revision from lap-band to either VSG or RNY (undecided about which one right now). I'm debating telling anyone. I'd like to tell my mom, since I'd like to have her with me after surgery. The problem is, she thinks she has the right to tell anyone and everyone my medical business. That's what she did after the band. She and my dad told the entire family, their employees, their clients, yadda, yadda, yadda. Add to that the fact that she's very wishy-washy. I mean, when I was losing weight well with the lap-band, she kept trying to feed me and kept shoving food at me. Now that I've regained almost everything I lost (and I lost 90 pounds and got to goal), she keeps telling me I need to try more diets. Sometimes it's really hard to keep my mouth shut, because I just want to tell her to pick whether she wants me fat or thin and stick with it! I don't know what to do. I just moved to Miami a few months ago, so the only people I know here are my new coworkers, and I'd rather not have my medical business spread around. I also don't want to lie to my mom and dad. But I also don't want my entire extended family to know that I had to have my band removed and revised to another surgery. I'm uncomfortable seeing them as it is, since I keep getting larger and larger every time they see me, and I KNOW that they're thinking I'm a failure. *sigh* Of course, this will all be moot if I can't get the revision approved in the first place. I've had one consultation with a surgeon, but I didn't click with his office, so I've got another consultation in a week or so. Hopefully, that one will be the right surgeon!

    ANY AUGUST SLEEVERS

@@chimboree26 if you dont mind me asking why are you getting a revision to the band, i had originally planned to have the band but my doc said it would be beneficial as i would not lose enough weight
  20. My surgery was Thursday, Apri 7. I was released yesterday. I'm a sleeve to bypass revision due to a few medical issues. The pain is nothing compared to what I had when they did the sleeve. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Getting up and walking keeps the gas pains at bay.
  21. Dr. Schulman

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

Congratulations on taking the first step to better health. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing how lax your skin will beand what surgeries you will need after your weight loss. As I have said before, peopel with bands tend to have less loose skin than people with bypasses - this is because the weight loss is more gradual. But, givent hat yuo expect to loose over 100 pounds, you should expect to have significant skin. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, but keeping healthy diet and high protein will make you better prepared to heal after surgery and make your recovery smoother. I haev many african american patients and keloids (more correctly, hypertrophic scarring) is always a concern. I use special techniques to avoid this, but much depends on how your skin will heal. My experience is that event hough you may have had keloids from a previous procedure, it is usually much better after plastic surgery using the tecniques that I use. It is also possible to "revise" the scars at a later date if they heal thick - I have a larger number of people that come to see me specifically to revise thick scars that they have from other surgeries with other doc. I look foward to seeing you as you approach your goal. Make sure you have signed up for my newsletter so you can take advantage of my latest special promotions and hear the latest news.

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

Hi Dr Schulman I had an armlift in March this year. The scars are at the back of my arms (I wasnt given any reason for this but had expected them to be on the inside of the arms) and the arms themselves are not as slim as I would have liked given the extent of the scarring. The measurement pre-op was 15 inches and post op is 13 inches. The scars are positioned at the back but close to the inner side. In such circumstances where there is still a significant amount of excess skin, do you think a revision op might be possible to remove the excess and reposition the scar on the inner side of the arm so that it's not immediately visible from the back? Thanks for your advice. Ellen
  23. LittleBill

Guys who started over 400 lbs.

Oh no! It's too late! Don't worry about it. The best person to answer that question is you, and probably not until after you've had it for a while. If the band works for you, then it was the best procedure. If it doesn't work, and for the right reasons (i.e. you are doing everything you are supposed to) it can always be revised to a sleeve. But if it were me, I would not start out worrying I went the wrong route. Give it time.
  24. Pebbles it may seem like the sleeve is new, but it's actually not. There's a category of overweight called the Extreme Morbidly Obese. For those the option that was chosen over gastric bypass was a surgery called the Duodenal Switch. Patients would go through all the hoops and have the sleeve surgery. They would lose a certain amount of weight and then about 10 months to a year later they would go back in for a second surgery, the duodenal switch. Doctors started to note that goal weight was being achieved with just the Gastric Sleeve and the second part of the surgery was canceled. Since the sleeve was considered part of a two-part (two surgeries) it does not have it's own Medicare Code. Many insurance companies sort of follow what the Government considers the norm. Also, since it was not considered a stand-alone surgery it took a little while to get the data back on where the sleeve stands in comparison to Lap Band and Gastric Bypass. There have been so many issues in the past with lap band, and now so many revisions, or people having to get it taken out and problems with adhesions many surgeons are backing away from doing lap band lately because of it. The sleeve has been around for a while now, but the statistics are showing that in the long run it is comparable with Gastric Bypass with less complications from dumping, malnutrition, etc. Of course, it's a surgery so it's not full-proof, some people have issues with it. I only wanted the sleeve, I had no interest in Gastric Bypass, however, with Gastric Bypass there is less issue with GERD or acid reflux, that has given me some pause because I suffer from acid reflux, but then I realized, wow that's because i was eating late at night and eating too much. Since I started the 6 month pre-supervised diet I haven't had any issues with acid reflux in months and I haven't been sleeved yet. Good luck on your decision making and what you are doing is awesome, research research research and start working on adjusting the way you eat now, eat your meats first, vegetables second, lower your carbs, and try practice not drinking with your dinner, try to lower your caffeine in advance because you will have to give up caffeine. Try to monitor what you are eating in advance by joining something like myfitnesspal.com and keep track of your Water, Protein & carb intakes.
