  1. Sounds awesome! I'm gonna try it! For the pepperoni craving--get turkey pepperoni and lay a few slices on a paper towel and microwave for 30-45 sec and it will crisp up and you can eat it like a chip! YUM. Lower fat to begin with bc of the turkey and then a lot of the fat cooks off. Nice high Protein snack! Sodium is high Im sure so use in moderation
  2. Hi, just starting my journey. I am 41 years old, 5'3, 215lbs. I am trying to find info on lap band vs sleeve. I have Horizon BC BS insurance. I am registered for an informational seminar Feb 4, but I want to do some more research on my own first so I know what questions to ask. Can anyone recommend some sites or provide some info on how you made your decision, pros and cons of each? Thanks! Tonya

    BCBS Federal- clock begins!

I just found this site….was considering going to Mexico to have the sleeve procedure & see where you guys are working on getting Fed BC/BS to cover this in the U.S. Do you know what the criteria for the approval with insurance to pay? I was just informed by a Facebook buddy (who doesn't have federal BC/BS) the following statement: Federal ins I believe covers it. My BC/Bs would not but it takes about 6 months prior to surgery but you have to see psychiatrist for 6 months. Is this true see a psychiatrist for 6 months? I know about 8 yrs ago a former co-worker was only about 60 lbs overweight with a couple of other weight related health issues and her Gastric procedure was paid for by Federal. I would appreciate any info given.

Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

prowinewoman, One more thing I'd like to add--no matter which insurance carrier you choose, some of the requirements they have are for YOUR BENEFIT, as ridiculous as some of them may sound. The 6 month supervised diet that BC requires is to prepare you to GET REAL about drastically changing your eating habits and lifestyle for life. We all "intellectually" know we have to do that going into this, but "knowing it" and being emotionally ready to "do it" are two entirely different things. And yes, as The Candidate said, some Kaisers still require 24 weeks of Options classes; most are now only 12 weeks though. As you're finishing up the classes you would be having a psych eval appt with a Kaiser therapist and attend one support group and then your surgery date would be arranged. Just please think about not wanting to be in such a HURRY to get to your actual surgery. Remember that WLS is a PROCESS. It is not just about the operation and dropping the pounds. We are WLS patients for life, and we have the disease of obesity for life. It feels really good at four years out from my surgery that I know I've put in the HARD WORK to change my horrible old lifetime of bad and unhealthy habits and now food does not have power over me any more. I have the power over my food, and IT IS JUST FOOD and I use it as fuel and medicine for my body. Hope this helps . . .good luck!

    Should I or shouldn't I ?

Hey! My surgery is Feb 25 and it's getting here faster and faster. This has been a 2 year journey for me, so I am excited and nervous. My question/advise is this: I have been at my job for 3 years now. I love my job it's in finance management. I have excelled and moved up pretty quickly and my boss has asked me to apply for a lend/internship within my department for the next 6 months. I would spend half of my week learning new things and possibly a promotion at the end of it. Well my surgery is kind of at the beginning of this whole new position and my boss knows I will be out of work for 2-3 weeks and is cool with it. The problem is that it will put more pressure and stress on me , which I try my best to manage now... Coming back after this surgery and being put in a position where I have to be at 100% immediately worries me. I would never want to be put in a position where I don't excel bc of physical and maybe emotionally not at my best. I don't know if that makes sense. Knowing me- I will probably apply and see if they take me on. I just don't want an opportunity for my career to pass by. How did you all do going back to work?
  6. I am waiting for approval from insurance, submitted on Jan 9th. Does anyone have fed bcbs? And if they do, how long was the wait for approval.
  7. Im 10 days post op and omg please tell me it gets better.. Im so sick of soups and yogurts.. I just want some chicken or tuna to eat.. I want flavors and i want to chew.. Ugh.. Bc it suckssss sooo bad right now.. I hate this feeling i have
  8. keep your chin up! you have proved them wrong! I have had fibro over 25 yrs, now finally dx with hashis, SLE an many others. I was perscribed sevella..started throwing up it messes with my insulin. cymbalta that stuff scared me after hearing all the issues of coming off it. I had a yrs script but never took it. I was lyrica..it helped but insulin issues. gained 40 pds in 3 months! I could not get it off! went off it! been there done that. BW came back with insulin resistance, thyroid was dying..hashis finally after 20 yrs I had an answer! armour thyroid went on right before surgery bc my thyroid had to be within normal to be released for surgery. it did! I no about chronic pain. I live with it daily. its getting under control better due to plaquinil but I also have turned to essential oils as topical oinments. I do use a muscle relaxer to sleep at night when I sleep better I dont hurt as bad but still in pain. I am 6 months post 95 down I still deal with polymyalgia an the other health diseases I take day at a time but I am very careful what I eat an I also do minimum exercise. I do some work around here after 15 20 min I have to sit for a while to reboot. I do this thru out the day. I understand. do what you can. enjoy the journey an dont compare yourself with others. even if you get out when weather is pretty an ealk around the yard or down the front of yourself an work your way up to longer walks use your muscles and you will feel better mentally an start to feel better physically. baby steps! hang in there! but these scripts are awful an work against the insulin an causes other issues. I hope you find something to help your pain. I did a drastic diet change 2 yrs ago..off all processed white stuff! all additives, preservatives...I did it an you can to. I got off of all modern grains. wheat, berry wheat..etc...no breads starches for me. no caffeine most of time. I do drink a cofee in the mornings or Im a bear! lol...you have to see what works for you...

    Having a hard time!

what does your surgeon say about this? might need something strong then nexium? sorry your having this issue. it would be frustrating. we all react differant an yes I have to take nexium for mine also. as far as weakness I was 5 months getting my strength back. its major surgery an it takes time to really get back to normal maybe longer. my internists told me to give it at least 6 months to heal inside an get inner strength. he was right. I am now 6 months out . the first 3 to 4 months I was still learning an getting things working right. I would go a wk between BM bc we arent eating much. did this for months also. have you added miralax to your water maybe?? hang in there..Im curious to see what surgeon said.

    Hospital bag.

I'm packing a light robe so my butt doesn't hang out, extra panties for if I stay longer than a day, normal toiletries like tooth brush, deodorant, etc, chap stick, maybe my kindle, phone charger. And just wear out the same thing I wear in. I don't plan on taking a crapton of stuff. I've seen some people suggest taking a small pillow bc it helps to hold it against you on the drive home.

Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

Thanks for your feedback everyone (and congrats to you all on your success!) I've had Anthem BC for the last 7 years and have been overall happy with it, but LivingFree you have some good points about setting you up for long-term success. (I live in the Bay Area, and the Kaiser Richmond facility would be the closest to me). But, the idea of not having to deal with a waiting period or dr-supervised diet is very enticing! I've been thinking about this surgery for years (joined this site in 2009), and have tried many other non-surgery evenues in the meantime and I have decided that this is the route I am meant to take. It would be nice to jump in and get started right away. Tough decision, I have a lot to consider by Monday!
  14. My surgeon required a month without hormonal bc. It's because you are more likely to develope blood clots. I had to stop my depo two months ago. My date is Feb 2nd.
  15. Lau4lau I once sat through a lecture by a bariatric surgeon who flat out said mental health, depression, and anxiety had nothing to do with obesity that it was strictly bad eating habits (?!?!?!?!?!) There are HUNDREDS of different research studies done that say otherwise. Now looking how uninformed a surgeon is, just imagine how uninformed the general public is!!! People see over weight people as lazy and gluttonous. They have no idea that it's a disease. It is an addiction. I posted about my breakthrough with my husband just this past weekend!!! It took me literally being fed up to the point I vented it all out.

    OCTOBER 2014

I struggle with protein - I get 60 a day at best. My doc feels that my activity level is too much for my calories and to up it. Well we all know what my answer is! It's maddening bc I feel ill bust if I add anymore to my days. I'm sure it'll get better. I'm just not there yet.

Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

I had Kaiser and I thought it was terrible. I have Hashimoto's and my primary care gave me the runaround when I asked to see an endocrinologist because I believed she was under-treating me. I left for Anthem BC, and haven't had any issues with seeing whatever specialist I need. I had Anthem BC for the surgery, and paid $1400 out of pocket, when the total bill was $113K. Also, it was the easiest application. I just had to be over 40 BMI, did the psych consult, talked to the nut on the phone. My surgeon sent in the request. No 6 month physician monitored diet, no mandatory waiting period. They did require a center of excellence hospital which probably inflated the bill.
  18. Awesome! I have BC/BS NewEngland but it's an HMO
  19. I feel like they fed me too much in the hospital... 24 hours post op I was ice Water on sponge only. Then I got: 3tsp high Protein broth, 2tsp low sugar juice & 3tbsp sugar free Jello. Today I had one "GBII" meal before discharge: 2oz high protein broth and 2oz protein supplement with a dash of sugar free pudding. I was also offered a snack later (because my hubby got stuck at work and was late getting me) and they gave me 4oz vanilla carnation Breakfast made with skim milk, and then a school sized carton of skim milk. I drank the CIB but didn't touch the carton I was stuffed. At no point was I stuffed. I wasn't hungry, per se, I just ate because they gave it to me. But now I'm worried I just stretched my pouch!

    OCTOBER 2014

I've been eating salads for awhile now. I eat them everyday - I keep them down better than anything else. Doesn't hurt to try bc honestly everyone's experience is so individual.

    Sleeve holds too much food

Me too I ate 2.5 oz of pasta tonight (soft small shells) and about 3-4 oz of ground beef. I feel like a failure bc of it! I possibly ate 7-8 oz in my dinner meal.
  22. I was JUST talking about this the other night. It's annoying and incredibly frustrating and a bunch of BS!!!
  23. I was able to eat 2.5 oz of soft pasta and 5 oz of ground beef. I feel very full now. But im super worried that I was able to fit almost 8oz in. Im thinking I just stretched out my sleeve. Maybe Bc these were soft foods. Im 5 weeks post op
  24. I think it can be hard when u are first sleeved bc u have head hunger and when you have been eating liquids for 6 days u start wanting real food but it gets easier once u can have real food ...u just cook healthy and ur family will eat it to
  25. I am starting a new job on Monday and have to make a decision by then about which health insurance to pick, and I have narrowed it down to Kaiser or Anthem BC. I am hoping to have gastric sleeve surgery this summer. The Kaiser plan (after my employer contribution) will cost me $90/month but has a $6,500 out-of-pocket maximum, whereas the Anthem will cost me $190/month but only has a $3,000 out-of-pocket maximum. It looks like their coverage and requirements for the surgery are about the same but sometimes it's hard to know until the process is started. I can always choose a less expensive plan next year during the open enrollment after my surgery has (hopefully!) been completed. Wondering if anyone can share their experiences with me if you have either of these insurances. The thought of a "one-stop-shop" for Kaiser sounds appealing, but not sure if it's worth the extra out-of-pocket expense. Thanks in advance!
