  2. C@@Anumarie you can call and talk to a BCBS rep and find out what's going on. I have BCBS Fed and I called plenty of times for different things. It could just be paper work mistakes? I would call and see what you can find out.
  3. The surgical coordinator at the WLS center told me last week Friday that she received a message from BCBS. She said once we get the denial notice we'll forge ahead with an appeal. But I'm totally disappointed and confused. And I've received no notice of denial to date. I've done everything per the guidelines for approval that Fed BCBS outlines. The surgical coordinator said the BCBS rep mentioned it had something to do with my 3 mos requirement in a medically supervised program but I turned in all the paperwork that shows I did one for four months within the last two years (which is what Fed BCBS says is a prerequisite). Has anyone else had this issue and how was a it resolved?

Are you following a Paleo Diet?

I know all about the hardcore BARF fans. I've just seen too many problems from them. And a lot of times the problems stem from improper handling of the raw meat and dishes, etc. Did you know that in some veterinary hospitals (especially in Canada) dogs fed raw diets are quarantined when they come in and considered infectious because of the parasites they can potentially harbor and pass to other patients? Homemade diets certainly have their place, especially when a dog or cat has food allergies or certain medical conditions. We've worked with a holistic vet and used the Chinese temperature-based food charts to help develop diets for patients with cancer, liver failure, Cushings, autoimmune disorders, etc. But they really should be cooked and making sure it is a nutritionally complete diet is challenging. As for commercially prepared foods, it's kind of like with us. Read labels. Know what each ingredient actually is (for example, "meal" is not a bad thing) Use common sense. Find out what you can about the manufacturer - any recalls? where are they getting their raw ingredients? Did they conduct actual food trials in determining their AAFCO status? Do they have their own manufacturing plants or are they outsourcing to mass production factories? Recalls often happen not because that particular food is bad, but because it was processed in a plant that also makes another food that was recalled. There are just so many new, smaller, regional dog and cat food companies that offer a good product, that the search for the "perfect" one is certainly daunting. Nutrisource, Victor, Pioneer, Purevite, Go and Now are some of the ones available locally and we recommend to our clients. (But not all of these are organic and/or grain free)
  5. I cannot believe how good I feel to have had major surgery a week ago! Got my drain out yesterday (and it didn't even hurt!!!) - spent yesterday and today running errands and feel like my old self - except I don't want to eat! It's such a weird feeling - I can see and smell food and really appreciate the good aromas, but I have no desire to even take a bite! I am praying that this stays with me when I go back to eating real food. I'm sorry for bragging bc I know a lot of you are having a harder recovery, but I feel like I have a new lease on life. This is the best decision I've ever made!!

Major reflux after Sleeve and herna repair

@@Dawn Turpin Sorry to hear this happened to you Dawn. My surgeon said the same thing that it's rare but that's BS! I have seen people post all over these boards and some other websites about the same problem. More than a third of sleeve and band patients have this issue after the surgery and surgeons are not informing patients that this could happen and how to deal with it. I hope your bypass goes well and fixes the issue. I hope you come back and let us know how you are doing. Good luck and good vibes being sent your way!

Are you following a Paleo Diet?

I had only 1 app with the NUT preop..and what she teaches i totally disagreed with..i let her do her spill then i mentioned to her what my plan was bc i had already made these changes a yr earlier and this was what i chose to do she got on the same page with me as far as portion size and sugar content grms per serving to do..but its mine boggling how the FDA is still teaching in what i personally feel is doing more harm then good to ppl..its sad. I do a mix of paleo and ketogenic ..the ff/sf diet and low fat is what got i followed the past 30 yrs..got fatter and fatter..its been organic grassfed for me raw organic sugar or stevia im 90% off dairy i do use heavy whipping cream for my coffee in morning but thats it. Unsweetned almond milk .i eat raw pecans daily . but its working for me. To each there own. Im 8 months out and have yet to see that NUT again..doubt i will either. I see surgeon in may for my 10 Month po..i eat as fresh as possible..luv salmon..wild caught..i say do what works for you personally but its what we do..????

  10. @@Sjane have they run any blood work for your hormone levels? have you tried going off hormonal birth control, for good or at least until your cycle begins to function normally? I'm guessing it is your body adjusting to your weight loss, and switching different types of hormonal methods will also mess with it. Good luck! I went off bc pills last July and I told the bariatrician today that I wouldn't be going back on hormonal birth control - I want nothing messing me up for when I'm ready to get pregnant.
  11. Anyone else going under on this date? I would really love some surgery buddies ????. I don't start my liquid diet until the 30th and I am constantly having to tell myself not to gorge on sweets bc I know I can't have them after. I have a ton of questions but mostly what should I buy before I go under for afterwards. I don't want to go grocery shopping for awhile after so I want to get it all done soon. TIA

    Women Only!

I'm terrified of it being heavier! I already have very heavy periods to begin with. Although my period started day before surgery and it was actually really light (compared to normal) which surprised me bc of all the meds!
  17. I grew up with the ole saying (plz no one get offended!!!) i would cut my crust off bread and it was "do you no theres starving children in the world who would give anything to have that"..and "your not leaving this table till your plates cleaned up"..we were fed with this and fed with that. I didn't have a weight issue till i got out of high school. I was 110 pds for most part till then..i grew up on a garden..it was healthy but the biscuits and gravy and the pancakes and mashed potatoes and mac and cheese all of the comfort i understand...mom made cobbler and pies so did grandma..sorry for listening these foods on a new lifestyle site but i had to reprogram my thinking and foods are so processed the past 20 plus yrs really takes a toll and I've had to relearn what the wrong choices were and replace..i was a carb sugar addict..but i learned i could still have treats but with different ingredients but i also learned fir me the foods that got me where i was so for me its something I've worked hard on the past 2 yrs and now its second nature. It will get easier take day to day. I've learned to appreciate my tummy and learned to love myself again and it has made a difference..you'll see..,i did turn to help over the yrs and learned how to stop being a slave to my emotions. Iv been thru a divorce personally and it took its toll on me. Thats in my past ..move foreword! This is a great support site..its helped me alot learned alot and i try to pay it forward with my journey and experience..????

    BCBS Federal timing question

I started the "journey" and then stopped back in December. I am a spouse of a BCBS FED employee and just completed my last mandatory class. I was called earlier today and told the paperwork was going to be submitted for approval and that BCBS just changed out their process and its taking at least 4 weeks for approval. I did my chest xray & EKG on Nov 11. I am pushing for the first of May timeframe for surgery. I am also in the middle of moving. My house is scheduled for completion late April and we hope to move in by May 1. I would prefer to be recovering in my new house instead of the camper I am going to be living in starting next Tuesday. We sound like we may be "losers" together - early May.

    March 9th sleevers

Hi March Niners! I'm having a really hard time sticking to the purée... I've been eating crackers and other soft foods that I shouldn't be. I've only lost 10 lbs and I'm having a hard time getting my protein in... Just bc I can't stand the smell of it! Trying to stay strong and should be returning back to work this Monday!
  20. When i have the days that i have no appetite i make sure i keep the protein whey shots in my fridge. But that doesn't happen often.im mostly eating every 2 to 3 hrs..i upped my fats (no ff or lowf) and my meats are grass fed organic and its made a big difference in staying satisfied longer with alot fewer as in no cravings. Im to stay away from breads, pastas, rice, bad carbs till i reach goal. But the bread turning into a ball and getting stuck is all i needed for motivation to not eat it..haha..i also use the stevia water enhancer flavors when i want something other then tea..i started back drinking chike and its really helped as well. The eating smaller all day (not grazing) has obviously worked for me. Still only get less then 3oz per setting
  21. you summed up the way I feel in a nutshell. it is why i give people my blog info etc. i don't say hey this is for you, or anything i just say hey check out my blog , in the hopes that maybe the idea will rub off on them. I see very large men and women and think," please, save yourself...get the help you need, don't wait like I did, don't fall into those traps. " The other problem is I am a big proponent against government intrusion in behavior , and as such I am wholeheartedly against the new mandates for school lunches for example. I really believe that the more you deny food to kids you will encourage them to have it. It is a personal thing for sure. For me, growing up, my dad ran the household, and he hid and locked up food, not everyday items, but anything dessert-like, and as such because you had to get past this food hoarding thing, you always wanted the forbidden fruit so to speak, and I know it played a big part in why i ate the way I did and in influencing me to be how I was. I do believe that good nutrition at a young age should involve all foods, good , bad etc. as long as its not slanted too much on either side. I truly believe that if you teach a child to eat in a balanced way, they can and wil be prepared to keep that balance in thier life. Im as much against the obese kids being fed the way they are, as I am against the mothers or parents i should say, that deny their kids everything in the name of nutrition. Also exercise among kids is just nonexistent. Kids spend way too much time playing video games of sports, rather than playing the sports themselves. Girls ar spending so much time texting and using thier phones, they could care less about moving around, and with schools above elementary ( whin my state at least) having done away with recess for all students above elementary, its no wonder.

Required to be off birth control

It's because it places you at a higher risk for blood clots during and immediately after surgery. Generally it's only oral antibiotics that they worry about, however I was also told I had to be off birth control before surgery. I use depo and I explained to my doctor that depo is not contraindicated for the same reason oral antibiotics are, he researched it, and then he cleared me. I would ask your doctor to research further into the ring, because it shouldn't be the same issue as oral contraceptives. Usually they just blindly tell everyone they can't be on birth control without looking at the versions of bc that are not orally based. If anything it is more of an issue before surgery than for a full month afterward. You won't feel like having sex for at least a week or two after surgery and after that point, I don't see a medical reason to wait the full month.

Required to be off birth control

I didn't have to go off my BC except the day of surgery, but I did have a visit with my GYN about 2 weeks before my surgery and she had to give me a spiel about how BC greatly increases the chance of blood clots after surgery and how imperative it was for me to walk and move a lot after surgery. They did keep the air things (technical term ha) on my legs to keep the clots away until I was able to get up and walk. I also take my BC for treatment of PCOS to regulate my hormones, not just to not get knocked up, so that may be part of why they let me keep taking it. I'd just ask them why, I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you. Ask for a diaphragm, or make him wrap it up, or both.
