Happy to Mentor - Almost 1 Year Post-Op

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful suggestions! I've tried sticking with the positive YouTube videos & even some that aren't so positive so that I can be better prepared. I'm concerned about the puree stage bc I'm so picky. For instance I don't eat eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, any seafood...yeah, I know, I'm in for a challenge! Knowing that the surgery will be a tool to living a healthier lifestyle is certainly my driving force. Finding high Protein puree foods will be my dilema. Thanks again for your suggestions & kudos to you for choosing to live healthy!

    Losing TOO MUCH weight?

my thinking is you can't please everyone. I have been getting the looks and some comments myself the past few months and now its every wk from ones who are obese themselves..some has said "STOP" your getting to little! yet there's others who are not over weight are telling me to "keep it up" your looking great! ugh...there was a intersting comment I heard from a dr I can't remember where but it was recent and his comment was "some people in general has a distorted view on body image or size (weight or numbers) especially in the media bc of a certain group of skinny models..and so people are very judgemental now days on what each person "thinks is the JUST RIGHT size"....you need to decide for yourself and no one else where you want to be that is healthy. if ppl are used to seeing us as big, obese, overwheight or however the term is used when they see us shedding close to 100 pds plus it's going to shake them up or get them jealous or what have ya. I had some one asked me how far I was going down and I said "when my body see's fit to be balanced and happy it will stop on it's own and maintain"...2 of my gf's tell me you can't ever lose to much weight and laughed. it's hard on others to see us change but I decided I'll be the judge on what's enough for me and of course with the guidance of my surgeon which he has never set a certain amount to lose he has left that up to me. hope this helps ya..
  3. make what your drinking count for nutrition, protein and calories. you have alot of great advice above. I went thru the I'm not hungry for months. I was curling my nose up at the thoughts of having to eat or drink something. I forced myself to get in my surgeons protocol whether I felt like it or not. 60 grms of protein daily..it literally took me a few wks to work up to getting that full 60 daily bc of the tummy swelling but what I drank which was protein in everything or anything I consumed was protein. I added spoonful of protein to everything. no ice chips here. your body has went thru a major ordeal and requires protein for the body to heal and to give you some energy to get thru the day. fluids and protein. MUST HAVES daily. Did you receive a diet guideline? didn't the preop classes go over instructions ? just asking..when I see these type of questions I start thinking that maybe this person was a self pay and didn't go through the preop education classes I could be wrong please don't get upset that's not my intention here and BM are normal for not happening for at least a wk bc of drastic reduction of intake. I was the full wk..everyone's different in how they're body responds. my first 4 or 5 months when I did get some soft foods in it was usually only 2 to 3 bites at a time and it was protein all the way that counted. I am 10 months out and get about 6 or so bites in now. which is what I expect..

    for those already sleeved

from the evening in postop and till now 10 months out absolutly NO difference in feeling. NO pain from the inner tummy as in from a feeling of being cut. I wondered about this same question before but I really didn't care bc I was having it done regardless. I needed this tool and I didn't care what I needed to go thru I already live daily with chronic pain from lupus and fibro so it wasn't no issue for me. If the pain from the stomach itself being done don't fret. the outer few incisions were tender but for me it was manageable and the only difference I have like everyone else would agree is the restriction of not eating much which is why we get it! it's awsome!

    Anybody from Rochester, NY?

I'm Diana and I live in the North Winton Village! I did not lose any weight. In fact my first few interactions with the center kind of discouraged me. I had a referral from the pcp yet when they called to confirm my attendance at the seminar the receptionist made a remark about not thinking I'd get very far bc my BMI was just over 40. I then had a similar experience at my first weigh in at the group nutritionist appt. The nutritionist asked what insurance I had when she calculated my BMI and then with a smirk made this comment about having my work cut out for me. I made sure that my weight stayed the same between weigh ins just to ensure that I'd have a BMI over 40 for insurance approval. It wasn't until my appt with the PA who ordered all my tests and talked about the different procedures that I finally felt like I belonged there and was making the right decision. I guess now that I have a surgery date and approval it's all history And I had already introduced myself haha oops!
  6. My doctor is SOOOOO specific. I could either do the bariatric advantage meal replacement (which to me were terribleeeeee) or glucerna shakes bc of the slowly digestible carbs. So glucerna it is lol

    ANXIETY MEDS

I take anxiety meds "as needed". It helps a great deal with my eating disorder & keeping the obsessive thoughts at bay. I have klonopin 1 mg and the script is 1-2/day as needed. Some days I take 1, some days I take 1/2 , some days I take 2 & some days I take none. It really just depends on how I'm feeling. If you have any proclivity to addiction, you may want to try something else. For me, it works, but I make a point to not take it regularly bc I don't want to become dependent.

    Anybody from Rochester, NY?

Hi! I attended the information seminar on November 17th and had my surgical consult with Dr. O'Malley on March 26th which was also the day I received my surgery date and insurance approval. All in all about 4 1/2 months plus a month until my surgery date. He could've gotten me in the first week in April but you have to be off BC for 4 weeks. I am sooooooo excited! How has the process been for you this far?? Who is your nutritionist? Diana
  10. The benefits tell me coinsurance 15% of the plan allowance after 350 dollar deductible, which I have no clue what that dollar amount is for "plan allowance". What I need is the dollar amount that fed bcbs pays so I can figure out my 15 percent
  11. The absorption of BC is affected. IUD is best---I have Mirena IUD and haven't had a period in a year!

    February 16th was my RNY

Sorry! I am new to the site and still learning how to find things! I was told by my dietician that all my fluids need to match the protein intake. So it was never just water specific. Everything fluid counts. Usually I drink about 4 bottles of 16.9 oz of water and bc I have so many calories (1200-1400) I need bc of my height, I also drink 2% milk. The rest is shakes and boost. I wish i was shorter! I can not get the 1400 calories they want me to get...they are even talking 1500! I am exhausted after 1200.

    Issues drinking water?

Part of me was thinking maybe it's bc my stomach is so empty, that it's water hitting all my stomach acids and not mixing well... Idk I'm reaching at this point! Lol
  14. Saw doctor today, informed me wouldn't have a cost estimate till approx 2 weeks before gastric bypass surgery, whenever that may be. Curious as to what this has cost others with federal bcbs standard. I will be at a bcbs centered of excellence+. I have found info on approx cost for federal bcbs basic but none for standard.

    Birth control

we're using FAM (fertility awareness method, similar to NFP) with condoms on the 7 or so "fertile" days. BC pills/patches/hormones make my anxiety sky rocket (and also religious reasons). (~1mo PostOp) even if you have zero interest in FAM/NFP, reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by nurse practioner Toni Weschler is a GREAT read! (look at the reviews on Amazon) Its been around since 1995 but still VERY useful. even has chapters for those of us with PCOS, annovulatory cycles, etc.

    I'm Having a Breakdown

One of the things I read before surgery that I thought might be a bunch of hooey was that as we start to lose fat fast, like right after surgery, it causes a hormone surge. Apparently this is because the hormones are stored in fat and as we burn the fat, the hormones sort of flood the body. I thought it was BS, but less than a week after surgery, I started breaking out in HORRIBLE acne like I hadn't seen since my teens. I imagine that's part of what is happening with you. It doesn't make it any easier, but just try to hold on knowing that it will get better. You will do wonderful. Hugs.
  17. Okay guys..I started back at work and my whirlwind job makes it way difficult to consume liquids and eat because I'm always on the go. I'm sure so many of you can relate. I've taken to doing shakes through out the day just because they are easier to transport, I'm able to be less mindful of the size of bites and the number of chews. Probably not the best bc I don't wanna be on shakes indefinitely, but I'm only 4 weeks out so I think shakes are still super normal to use. Here's my question: I can drink 14 ounces of a shake super fast. I can drink a 16oz Water bottle over a series of three slightly spaced "chugs." Am I doing anything super harmful to my sleeve? When I eat food, I feel restriction at about a quarter cup (if it's super dense. Maybe a half cup of something like yogurt) I don't want my quick drinking to stretch my pouchie poo out. On the plus side---I'm meeting my protien and liquid goals daily lol. Any thoughts?

    Hypothyroidism

@@smiranda I think every surgeon and ever insurance is different. I do know that I was recently (6 months prior to meeting with surgeon) diagnosed with it and my surgeon would not schedule the surgery until it was under control with medicine. I think that was a requirement of my insurance company (Excellus, part of BC/BS). I was lucky that just a few months on the meds and it came down to "normal levels". Good luck!

How long does dumping syndrome last?

Well since it started I've been eating bananas, drinking water, toast, my usual protein bars. Haven't had any milk or anything In that nature. It started bc I had escargot with butter and garlic. Never doing that again.

    May Sleevers...where are you?

We are coming from Houston. My husband was a little nervous too, until I had him read up on the reviews, toured the website, and read some of the feedback from this site. We are coming from Houston, so definitely flying. My husband and I are both nurses, so I guess it makes it a little easier...well at least the 'fear of the unknown' factor. The only difference is he wanted to know things like complication rate, infection rates, and success rates. It also helps that he is hispanic, so he can help with translation. He is not completely fluent, but can get by. I was actually in Phoenix, AZ for nursing seminar several months back, very nice, but very dry (for me at least). As for the diet...I will be out of town at the the end of this week, our last vacation until May 15th, so after I am planning on getting serious when we get back on Sunday. I hope that leaves me enough time to lose 11l bs in 4 weeks. Good Luck to you too! I know you can do it. I am happy to have a surgery buddy!

    April 23rd Sleever!

April 22! Not required to do a liquid diet beforehand, but I'm going to do it anyhow. Any suggestions on a regimen? Bc I'm not required they didn't give me any diet to follow except what not to have the day before surgery...

    Weird Period

I also have PCOS and have only gotten a period while on BC. Guess what...2 weeks post op and now I got my period on my own. I have been off BC for almost 3 months. It just started today, but did look a little different than normal. Its from the rapid weight loss and all the crazy hormones.

Things men say when told about WLS :)

I haven't told any men I date that I had WLS or that I've lost a substantial amount of weight. To be fair, I may have some explaining to do if any of them ever see me naked with the lights on and I have to explain why I have a billion plastic surgery scars. I will never, ever tell someone I am dating about WLS because it creates a stigma that I don't want to have to deal with- it is my secret for life. As for the plastics, clearly I was a fatty at one point, so my plan is to be like...well I'm hot now, if you can't handle the scars, take your little boy bs and get gone. Recently I was talking to one of them and I mentioned that I was going to try to eat more juice and veggies the next few days and he was like, well why don't you eat healthy all the time? I'm like, I'm 130 pounds I can afford to have some nacho dip occassionally, and his response was...well you should have self-control. Totally irked me and made me very aware of the fact that if he knew I had been fat, I sincerely doubt he would think I was attractive. I try to think of how I would respond to a guy who looked fantastic in clothing and for the most part out of clothing who had a morbid obesity problem in the past, and I'll be honest- I would judge him as harshly as I judge myself. I can't get mad at someone for thinking I was a lazy, no self-control fatty when my inaccurate, but honest, thought about them is the same thing. Ideally I can explain away all my plastic surgery scars by saying that as I got older, I noticed that things weren't as tight as they used to be and genetically I had more sag than I wanted, so I had a bit of work done. Lying in relationships is clearly the key to success. lol

    Interesting question

Went for my fill today and the doctor was asking me if I wanted 1cc or .5. I asked him for his advice. He said, "Well are you hungry?" I had to think about it for a NY second (that's all I got bc I am in NYC) and the word Yes came out but I can't really say that I'm hungry all the time. I find I'm eating because I want to. And how do we get over that???
