    BMI - Insurance Question

I was under my BMI much more than you are and I have Anthem too. I was approved with 2-3 weeks. Health issues make a difference. The measured me an inch taller than I thought I was too. Good Luck! By the way I'm scheduled for surgery on Jan. 7th.
  2. I had my first and final meeting with my surgeon (Dr. Chua) before surgery. I am very excited. The only thing left to do is wait for his office to submit my request for authorization to my insurance (Aetna). Most people who have my insurance say they were notified in a couple of days if it was approved. If this is the case, I could know before the end of the week. Woohoo!!! Now the only thing left to do is find a new primary physician because my old one just moved to Texas before the last month of my finishing my requirements. (I was able to see her partner) I am disappointed that she did not write my letter of necessity before she left and I will have to use the one from my OBGYN that was less than stellar if I may say so myself. I wanted to curse her out and say "Why the He.. didn't you use the form letter that was provided?" My previous doctor wanted me to facebook her my progress. I want to facebook her to let her know that I do not appreciate her stiffing me and filling my head with high hopes to only be let down again. She better hope I get approved so I do not have to facebook her my dilemma to progress. Sorry for the Bipolar moment. I am just so anxious and will be pissed if these doctors who were suppose to do their job (they were paid by insurance) mess this up for me

    Aetna 3 Months Question

I only saw the nutritionist. Since I had been reading this board for so long, I knew everything she was saying, so she kinda gave up and just handed me the "official documentation" for post-op diet, nutritional guidelines for my 3 months, etc. Our visits lasted like 15 minutes each. I did not log my food. The surgeon's office had to obtain all sorts of extra documentation from different people, which took a week. Then I was approved after another week. Since it was Christmas time, it took a total of 3 weeks from the last nutr appt to approval.

    My renaissance.....

trace10.. What I mean by restriction is that I'm hungry just like before I got my surgery. No I'm not on mushy foods. I was on liquid for the first week and mushy for the second week, after that it was soft solids. At the moment I am able to eat anything that I put in my mouth. It might be different for you as every doctor is different. Some people will have restriction for longer than a week and some will not. I was hoping I was one to be restricted till my first fill but unfortunately not. I lost 10 pounds on the first week and a half, but after that, once the swelling went down I was hungry all the time. Now I just have to watch what I eat and for the most part I'm just maintaining my 10 pound lost. This is why I said that I can't wait for my first fill, I need restriction. I will not complain because I know my time will come and I'm just so happy that I had the surgery. I hope this help and good luck on your new journey:smile:

    My Job Requires Lifting

The bad outcomes from bariatric surgery were mostly from one doctor in the area, who has now moved to another state, and a few from the local doctors who are through the hospital I work at. A few were lap bands that had problems that turned into other problems, but most were from gastric bypass or DS surgeries. The bypass/DS patients were ones that were usually over 400pounds, got put on a vent after surgery and then took a while to come off. Once they did get discharged from ICU they have to come to rehab because now they are weak from post op diet intake, being bedridden, and as a result stay where I am at for weeks. They usually go home with family and home health care, some even go to a nursing home. Being fat and the road to being skinny is a scary thing, but I can't not walk it because I see what happens when you don't. I had an obese 35 year old co-worker who had one large and two smaller strokes last week that were a direct result of bad lifestyle and being obese.
  7. I work as a nurse and my typical patient is usually elderly, a new post op patient, a recent moderate to severe stroke victim, a bariatric patient who had a bad outcome, an accident victim, and/or a person who has been debilitated for a long period of time. The typical patient is a one person hard tranfer or a two person mild transfer. They weight anywhere from 100lbs to 500lbs, with the average being around 200lbs. They need to be tranferred into and out of the bed/wheelchair/bathroom and lifted and repositioned often while in bed, I work three-12 hour night shifts in a row so lots of this. I am hoping to have my sleeve done during a two week planned vacation, and return back to work about 10 days post op. I will be able to avoid a lot of the lifting by saying that I have had stomach surgery, but there is always times when it is hard to do. For anyone out there that is in a job like mine with this type of lifting, what is the amount of time you took off. I want to let my body heal properly, but at the same time I hate to make my co-workers work a lot of extra days to cover my days if I am off, so I would like to be back as soon as possible. Worse case I can tell my boss that I had the surgery and will only work if there are always two other people there with me, sometime there is only me and another worker. I hate to take this road because there are to many things that can go wrong and it is a major hassle to always make sure everyone hasn't forgotten that I need these needs met. Plus I hate feeling like I am whining or not pulling my weigh, I went through a year and a half of many complications with my lap band so everyone knows I have had these type needs in the past, so I really hate to go down that road once again. Any advice would be welcomed.

    Sex after Surgery?

Congrats on the date!!! I didn't discuss it with my surgeon or nurse beforehand...but I waited a week and was fine.
  9. Yeah, I think it was about 2 weeks or so...you should be fine! I had not heard the thing about being more fertile while losing weight. That is SCARY!!! I want to finish losing before I get pregnant.

    Sex after Surgery?

Yaaaaa, congratulations on setting your sleeve date!! I think you will be fine to go at it by the time your husband's birthday rolls around! I had surgery on 1/5 and my doctor told me that as soon as I felt up to it I could, and I felt up to it a week and a half after surgery. I took it a little easy, so you might not want to get too wild in the beginning...lol!! Another thing my doctor told me is that we are alot more fertile while losing weight so quickly. I thought that was an interesting tid bit since I had never heard that before, so for now I am using two kinds of birth control. I hope this helps, good luck!!
  12. I know I am going in a week before surgery to meet the anathesiologist and take ekg and bloodwork. If a whole group is coming in a the same time, maybe that is why it takes so long? After that hospital visit i have to go to my doctors office for a visit with him to go over all the previous test results (blood work, phych eval, nut eval, sleep study etc) and he'll talk about the surgery itself. Maybe it is similar?
  13. You did it!!!! All that waiting paid off, huh?? Yay!! I'm so excited for you!! I'm waiting for my approval right now. Hopefully before the end of the week!!

    Pre-approval frustration

Today is day 8 after I have completed all of my doctor's requirements for the surgery. Today is day 4 after the day my doc's surgery coordinator should of submitted my papers to the Insurance for approval. As of 3pm today - Insurance received nothing. I still can not reach the 'right' person at the doctor's office to find out why. Doctor is on vacation second half of Feb, and I have to have 2 weeks of pre-op diet... That means February surgery is most likely out of the question. I now understand why NYU docs require psyche evaluation from all patients - they don't want us to go mental on them from all that delays.
  15. i was put on a 2 week pre op diet where 2 meals were a high protein low sugar shakes - like ensure or carnation and the 3rd meal was under 1200 calories. yea, i so did not follow it and my surgeon never said anything after surgery about my liver being too large (whew!!). i had hoss's for lunch and olive garden for dinner the day before my surgery! i've been reading that some surgeons are not even reccomending the pre op diet because it isn't worth it. i'm not advising that you do what i did, i'm just telling you what happened for me =) getting a lot of protein is the key, i think 40 grams per day. walmart and other stores usually have a section w/ high protein shakes. good luck!!
  16. This past week I had Wonton Soup....OH HOW I WISH I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT during my LIQUID stage. IT was WONDERFUL!!!! Just drinking the broth was a treat...the FLAVOR...was OH SO GOOD!! I'm still on mushy's but I went out to eat with a friend to PF CHANGS and that is all I could think to eat. I told my friend she could have my fortune cookie. She opened hers and it said, "Today you will be with a friend and have lots of laughter"! WE were like OMG so she said I HAD to open mind and read it! My fortune cookie said, "Don't give up the beginning is alway hard, it will get better"! We were BLOWN away! LOL First time the fortune cookie spoke the truth!!! LOL We did have LOTS of laughter that day and it IS SO HARD at the beginning but it DOES GET BETTER!!!!
  17. I assume you want to fly after having surgery. I was not earied to fly until a full seven days after surgery. Took a flight on that eighth day with two legs for about 8 hours. Now, was I smart to do this? Hmmm. Question is how well you will be able to hydrate during that time frame. In 15 hours is it good to go without protien and just Water? Since you can not take in liquid protien through security yiou are going to need to consider this. Hydration is key after sugery. So - yes, you can probably do this, but consider what you are going to do if you have any complications? You are up in the air without medical attention. If you have a leak, you could be a a heap of trouble. Consider legging your trip into smaller portions, where you can get a hotel room ,rest and drnk some liquid Protein. I was exhaused after return trip and slept for the next week to recover from lack of hydration and protein. Ask your surgeon. If on day of flight, you are not feeling right (would say gut feeling here) rebook. Good luck!
  18. Welcome. I haven't been sleeved yet, but have surgery scheduled 4/18. I can answer some of your questions: The sleeve shouldn't affect the IBS if it's intestinal. If you have heartburn/reflux as well, make sure you take a daily medicine such as Zantaz 150 as soon as you're allowed back on meds (some surgeons prescribe one of these meds for all their patients - if so, just take what they prescribe). You may have diarrhea until you get back on solid foods, but that's not an IBS thing - many folks have it. Some folks seem to lose faster than others - I've seen some on here who've lost 100 lbs in 6 months and others who've lost like 50 lbs in the same time. A lot of factors determine this. Exercise - I've been walking too. Exercise is great for speeding up your metabolism. I've read that weights after surgery really help firm things up (but you won't be allowed to do them for maybe 6 weeks - again that figure varies from surgeon to surgeon). Basically you'll need aerobic exercise - your walking will be great to start, but as you lose weight try to increase your pace and walk a little farther in the same amount of time - and some kind of resistance thing for toning. I'm going to start with pilates and move up to weights - I'm 295 right now (down from 319) and need to start small. I've researched and researched and I'm ready to have this DONE. Good luck to you!

    Sick Before Sleeve

Well your doctor is right I would call your surgeon and see if you can move it up a week. I would stay on the liquid diet though. I hate really hate that you are sick and can't go through with the surgery.. You defintely don't want to be sick with the flu post op. It would be really bad on your recovery..good luck and hopefully you will be able to have it quickly..

    Bad Breath

Yep! It sucks when your kids tell you that your breath is bad. I was wondering if it goes away, and boom three weeks post op it went away. I still feel like I always need to brush my teeth though. Tamara

  22. SO EXCITED!!! I GOT MY SURGEON'S REFERRAL!!! I'M ALL SCHEDULED FOR THE SEMINAR IN TWO WEEKS! The journey continues!!! Thatgurl!
  23. I have my individual appointment with the clinic in two weeks, am excited and anxious. I'm wondering if anyone on this site has been sleeved in Halifax and has any advice for me. I know there have been a lot of VSG's done here in Halifax, but I guess they haven't been fortunate enough to find this web site. That's too bad because I've sure read some wonderful information on this site.
  24. I have Aetna HMO insurance and they do cover lap band surgery. The selection criteria says "For adults age 18 years or older, presence of severe obesity that has persisted for at least the last 2 years (24 months), documented in contemporaneous clinical records, defined as any of the following: Body mass index (BMI) (see appendix) exceeding 40; or And here lies the problem for me. Though I have been overweight pretty much all my adult life...I very rarely go to doctors. I had been to the obgyn in January of 2009 weighing in at 325, and then not back in a doctors office until February 2011 weighing in at 375, and then again last week at 363. Do you think they will count the OBGYN's weight documentation even though it's older than 2 years? I could go back farther than that and get my old obgyn's docs from 2006 when I was pregnant with my son, and also overweight (though closer to 275 then). I've finally made the decision to get the lap band, I'm attending a seminar on June 7th and I'm really looking forward to this. I meet (and beat) he BMI requirement (at nearly 50bmi) but I'm worried because I've not really been an active doctor frequenter. I would really hate to have to wait 2 years since February to 2013 to get my weight records! Too bad pictures of my fat ass from those time periods couldn't suffice : / Anybody have any idea? This is also my first posting here, been lurking for a few months. I'm 6' tall, 363lbs, size 26/28, 29 years old momma of 1. Only other comobidities that I have is high blood pressure, high cholesterol...but the doc has recommended weight loss and that's it. No sleep apnea, that I know of! Abbie
  25. I am getting banded in 2 weeks, and the only thing I'm nervous about is that I might have to give up beer. I haven't really talked it over with the doctor yet. Are there any beer lovers out there who have some insight?
