banded 6-23-2010 and starving!
Llyra replied to cmnstrd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is not time to panic yet! Nine pounds is a pretty decent weight loss in just a couple of weeks. -
Hi, I was /had a revision on 6/25 to sleeved. Everything was going ok till Sunday (4days ago). I woke Sunday with back shoulder pain and it hurst to take deep breath. By Monday the breathing was almost unbearable and the pain moved to my rib under my cheast and right back. So went to my Dr. Office which said I'm 4 weeks post-op and should out of the woods for leaks or clots. U may have gas but if the problem is still there by Tuesday (day3) go to emergency room at the hospital where I had my gastric sleeve on 6/25. Well by 3rd day my pain was the roof. After all the test. I have a blood clot and small case of pneumonia in my lungs. ...wow...help

It's the infamous Week 3/Week 4 stall that everyone gets. Your body is adjusting from surgery to liquids to soft mushy foods. Everybody gets it. No worries, the scale will start moving again in no time.

Wow. I hope I can be down 56! 3 weeks isn't that long I guess. I'm still on soft foods so wonder if that's why. I don't always realize how long it's been since I ate I think. I don't get my protein in though. Do you feel full? That's my concern. I can eat crackers and feel like tight.

I was banded on 7/6 and quickly lost 15lbs in the first two weeks. Since then, I haven't lost any more weight and have been at the same weight for about 1 week! I'm eating right-what should I do?? Has anyone else experienced this and how did you get through it to start losing again? (my first fill will be on 8/19) Thanks in advance for the advice!

I was doing okay but out of the blue this morning my port started to hurt quite bad. Sharp pain, pressure. Worse when I walk. A little hard to breathe. I'm only 3 weeks post op. Anyone experience anything similar?

I cannot stress how great Dr. Averbach is. He came to check on me personally EVERYDAY and the staff at St. Agnes took very good care of me. I'm home! Actually got home yesterday just have been trying to settle in. I'm on full liquids for two weeks which is ok cuz three or four sips of Soup and I'm full. I'm sipping my Water but it is def the hardest part because it just doesn't feel the same so I am flavoring it with a little lemon or crystal light. Getting in and out of the bed has been a challenge but I have figured out the least painful way. The leak test was disgusting! LOL worst stuff I have ever tasted but I had no leak so that was awesome. They did it Friday morning so I went all day thurs without anything passing my lips but the glycerine lemon swabs saved the day. Still had dragon breath lol but they def helped me a lot. I still have the drain in to monitor things which is a weird feeling but my doctor likes to be very careful, so I will do what I have to. Sorry to ramble! Pain meds are taking effect but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask! And I will answer as soon as I can.

Good to know I am not alone. No I am not going regularly and I have had some problems with going to the bathroom. I usually go every 3 or 4 days and I have to take stool sofners. I stopped taking them and when I finally had to go to the bathroom it was the worst episode yet. I was in the bathroom for over an hour and the pain was horrible and I had to handle business (gross). It's been about 3 days since that and I have been taking my stool softner again and I hae gone 2 times now and it has been a lot better. I have been getting my Protein from food not shakes because I can't stand them anymore and Ithought that would help but I am still on the soft food stage so maybe after this week when I can go on all foods and I can start having salads and stuff I will go more regularly. So you think the pain is just from not going to the bathroom and getting stopped up? How come it feels better when I eat? Did yours feel better when you ate? Thanks again

I know, I know...dont get hung up on the scale....BUT I'm about 6 weeks out & last Saturday I weighed 283 & today I weigh 285. I am averaging 5-600 cals a day. And I don't have a TOM. What the.... Maybe it's what I'm eating? Here's an average day. I'm not big on variety yet cuz my sleeve is picky....realllly picky! Also not a big eater...just can't do 6 meals a day. Am. SF vanilla latte w/ 2% milk. Takes all morning to drink lunch. 1/6 of a flat out whole wheat wrap w/ 2 tblspn of cram cheese & 2 oz of smoked salmon Snack. Protein shake w/ 30 g protein...can only stomach a little over 2/3 of it dinner is the same as lunch. Well, thoughts??

Are you keeping an actual food journal to log the breakdown of your calories/fats/carbs/protein? Sounds like you are getting in an OK amount of Protein, but might need more. At 6 weeks you should be aiming to get 80-90g at a minimum. And it's good if you can get half of that in before mid-day, rather than lumping it all in the afternoon. If you can, mix up what you're eating rather than eating the same thing more than twice a day. Are you logging your fluids as well, 64oz or more per day? How much are you exercising? It might be time to bump it up a little, like 10% more. More than likely it's just a stall. The human body is not a perfectly tuned machine and can have it's quirks. Be patient, I'm sure it will break soon!!

I think about 95% of people some sort of stall. I never had a true stall (14 days without an ounce lost), but the closer I got to goal, my loss slowed down. I didn't experience a stall for the first 6 months, and then I was a few pounds from goal and hit a 10 day stall, then BAM dropped those pounds plus 2 to drop me below goal. If you follow your post-op dietary guidelines, push Protein and fluids, the weight loss will continue, plus working out, building muscle mass can slow down your loss, but you'll be losing inches. A pound is a pound be it a pound of fat or muscle. Fat is lumpy and takes up space, muscle mass is lean, and takes up less space in our bodies so when we build muscle, it burns the fat, and we trim down even though the scale may not be moving. I recommend taking your measurements at your neck, breasts/chest, upper arms, upper thighs, waist, hips and calves. Your clothes might fit differently even if the scale isn't moving much because you're muscles are growing, and the lumpy, bumpy fat is melting away. Mentally prepare for a stall by realizing that your body can not continue to lose a pound a day for a year. Take your measurements, and document your progress in pictures so you can physically see the changes. If you hit a stall, analyze your intake and make sure you're staying on course food wise. Stalls happen, the rapid weight loss can't last forever, but you can continue to lose at a good rate by sticking to the rules. I dropped 115lbs in 6.5 months so it's possible to lose all your weight, and keep a steady loss going.

Had my first 'oops' today and I'm paying for it!! I am about 3 weeks post op, still on mushies, and ate lunch at 11:00. After work my husband picked me up and we went car shopping. I missed my afternoon snack and we didn't get done at the car dealers until after 7, home until 8:30. I was SO hungry. Overly hungry. My head is POUNDING. I came home and tried to eat slowly some quick protein but it was too late, I was shakey and still can't shake the headache. Any ideas for portable snacks when still on mushies?

Had VSG to RNY Monday the 12th
SleeveDreamer posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well this is my journey from Monday the 12th. Went in for hiatial hernia repair and RNY because my acid was totally out of contol. When the anesthesiologist inserted his tube, it was discovered that I had a very thin area of scar tissue that was completely iniulated from my severe acid. So my wonderful surgeon had to repair that first before he could do the bypass. Because of this it wasn't necessart for him to do the hiatial hernia repair. So the bypass part went as planned. Because of this repair, I could not start liquids on Tuesday. I had to have an upper gi xray to make sure there was no leak. There wasn't, but he still wanted to be extra cautious because of the delicate repair. So I was only allowed ice swabs all day Tuesday and was on IV. Yesterday, Wednesday, I was finally allowed ice chips, but still on IV. Today, Thursday, I am still on IV, but was allowed broth. I am not having any problems with the broth, so I may be able to go home tomorrow. I live 50 miles away, so like I said he is being cautious. Originally, I was to start liquids Tuesday through next Monday, adding protein drinks tomorrow. Of course that's when I was supposed to go home today. So now I will be on the clear liquids longer and probably not add protein til mid week. Otherwise, I feel great. I have never had any pain or needed to take pain meds. I am up walking four times a day with no problem. I do have a drain this time too, and that will be until my post op next Thursday. I have never been nauseated. I am just glad I have an excellent surgeon who saved my life agin. If this would have gone unnoticed, it most likely would hav ruptured and I would be in deep doo doo with infection throughout my entire body. I will update tomorrow! Wish I would have gone this route rather than VSG 5 1/2 years ago! -

Yay! I'm happy I'm down 4 lbs this week! Still in pain since banded on 2/19/13. But getting Better!

Remove soda completely from your diet. As for chips, why? Are you looking for crunch factor? If so, there are others ways to get that crunch feeling. If it must be chips, there are some good Protein chips alternatives out there that can be used as a treat, but not an everyday thing. By treat, I mean once a week.

HIGHLY considering lap band, SHARE pre surgery recommendations
Susie Girl 75 replied to health4life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to be on all liquids for two weeks prior to the surgery. Full liquids like protien shakes, tomato Soup, I drank sugar free kool aid like it was going out of style. It was extremely difficult and I did falter a few times, here and there (not that I am saying that cheating is good) but I am just being honest. My doctor wanted me to loose a few pounds before the surgery and they also want you on all liquids prior the the surgery so your liver shrinks a little bit. If the liver is enlarged, it's harded for them to manuver around while doing your procedure, that's all... and as large people, our liver tend to be larger and fattier! :wink2: The pre-op diet is hard, but I managed! As I mentioned, I wasn't as diligent as I should have been the first week, but I did stick it to very closely the second week. My surgery went off without a hitch and I was home the same evening watching movies with my fiance! Hope that helps! Susie Girl! -
I will be 3 months out next week and my NUT told me capacity right now is around 1/4 cup of dense foods.

Biotin 7500 Safe To Take?
MeredithMcFee replied to Carolinegee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A friend of mine shared this with some friends and myself back in November as she has a hair loss problem. She was taking the 500mcg daily for some time. I decided to do it as I have thyroid issues and noticed my hair falling out {prior to surgery}. I went to the drug store and found Biotin 5000mcg and decided on buying that. Of course, the old mentalitiy, whether it be eating or anything, bigger is better. I've been using it up until the last two weeks or so as I've noticed my hair drying out. I'm not sure if it's from the biotin because my Dr switched me from one anti-depressant med to Cymbalta around the same time I started with Biotin. I'm actually doing a process of elimination to see if it's one or the other, or perhaps the two together. Who knows. But I will say, I did notice an improvement in my hair in thickness even after having the surgery in late January.
