All Choked Up And Out Of Ideas..
Mjv013 replied to christinanewhart's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I after to agree with one of the other posters. Lap Band is something to take very seriously. You have to be commited in everyway to be successful. On that note, being diagnosed with pcos myself, I can understand your struggle. Metformin also did nothing for me. None of the pills and diets worked. With so much stacked against you its hard to lose weight. Trust me, I totally understand. Then trying to throw getting pregnant in the mix.... forget it. My Dr at one point told me that we would not help me get pregnant until I lost X amount of weight because the risk of sever complications was high. I did have to agree with him but it was horrible the first time he mentioned weight loss surgery. I was 271lbs at that point. I too have never had a regular cycle and had little hope after 17 years of getting pregnant. After more depression and more failures in dieting, I finally got the band. #1 to be healthy. I had given up having children especially since I was pushing 34. Each time I went to the Dr, something else was wrong. High blood pressure, high blood sugar, sore knees, bad skin.... the list goes on and on. I had surgery 10/2009 at 291 lbs and do not regret one single moment!! It has been the best decision I have ever made. Within 4 months I stopped all 7 of the medications I was taking. I never actually had cysts in my ovaries and was cleared of pcos. Fact: most people diagnosed with pcos do not actually have cysts or they can clear up. So I went on birth control because I was still having irregular periods. I stopped taking my BC on Nov 24, 2011 and found out on 12/26 I was expecting my first. I understand that each situation is different, but after 17 years of heartbreak and tears, I can finally say "I'm gonna be a mommy"!! If you are prepared to work hard nothing is impossible!!! Good luck and keep us posted on our decisions!! -
Wow, I think I have been to Glastonbury! It has the ruins of the huge cathedral and the a "holy bush" right? I'm in my mid thirties and live in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We moved her last year after living on the West Coast for eight years (San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Vancouver BC...) I don't work for money right now, I have a two-year old. Keeps me busy and I love my "job" (we are watching "Curious George" right now, what a life  ) My surgery will be 25th of July and my doctor requires three weeks of Optifast. I started four days earlier with the shakes, since I planned a little camping trip for my husbands 40th birthday before I knew the surgery date and I am not 100% sure I can follow through with Optifast when we are away for three days. I will try. Kat

I wonder why they ask you to stop BC? My dr talked to me about using birth control. I have never used it. I have never been able to get prego so I assume it is a lost cause and at 48 I dont think I need it.

Oh Kat I'm so sorry that Rick is having health issues again! It has been quite a year for your family. We will be thinking of you both! Mandy - our price of $650 included airfare. I think it was around $150 and airtran as well. Although Diseny messed up booking our tickets, and put Sherry's last name the same as mine. This is even though we used her credit card for the deposit AND I asked the guy what info he needed on Sherry for the plane ticket. Now I have to fed-ex the air ticket back to get a new ticket. I'm not happy. grrr... Congtrats on your date Pat!!! WhooHooo! It has been a long wait, that's for sure! Hi Darcy, Cindy, Beanie, Eileen, Betty, and everyone else! So Sherry and I have decided that we need to start exercising so we're using Disney as a motivator. We have committed to exercising 3 times a week each week between now and Disney. She is thiiiis close to hitting onderland, and I seem to be at a plateau, so it's time to get things moving!! Hope everyone has a great Saturday! I'm off to do the MS Walk this morning.

Good Morning, Darcy how exciting, what kind of business is your sister starting? Good luck w/the cabin Jenny, wow, your amazing. I am from bergen county NJ and had my surgery in Hackensack. I should be losing more weight but its my fault, not the band, I can't seem to stay away from junk food, and well exercising would help if I would get my lazy arse to do it. I've heard so many good things about morristown and dr. bertha... your in good hands. I also have bc/bs of NJ insurance. I'm glad your here and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask. Well ladies, I'm gonna do some cleaning later but mostly rest b/c I have to get rid of this cold thats been following me around for the past 2 weeks. Tomorrow we are expecting a nor easter ... depending on the way it goes it could be lots of rain or snow...ick! How is everyone... I've really missed you all.

Are you a man, a woman or something else?
Just-Ice replied to btrieger's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I, frankly, am quite sick of the politically correct bs. Everywhere you turn being afraid to say ANYTHING to might upset someones apple cart. Come on people, get over it. You are going to have things said in life that upset you. Not everyone's uptopia is going to exist. How sad is it that we supress our actions and words just to make sure we don't step on someones toes? (ie: had an employee that was afraid to say "black friday" to a black man.) Seriously?? Well.. guess what. I'm going to be authentic this year. That doesn't mean I'm a racist, or a bigit, or just an ass. I don't intentionally hurt peoples feeling, in fact, I am usually the peacekeeper, BUT, I won't turn a conversation around 15 times in my head to make sure on one gets their feelings hurt if it is something I really mean and do say. I don't feel others should have to say I'm "heavy" instead of "fat".. etc... This p.c. crap is ruining this world. AND.... for the records, btrieger, you crack me up too! -
My doctor makes you go through all the hoops before you can see him. (Clearances, documented weight loss efforts, and 10% weight loss) What they explained to me was that all that they have you do is MORE than most insurance companies require so it is pretty rare for one of their patients to not be approved. I do know for me it was easier than for a friend who has BC/BS - she had to sign extra papers and submit more than I had to because they knew that was what their insurance required. (and this was BEFORE she got to see the surgeon)

What you should know about WLS they don't tell you

That's where I feel a lot in of my weakness - my hands and I turn 60 Thursday! Its my arms and hands (duh! They're dependent on each other 😆). That's what I was referring to in my OP... I have a hard time opening things I never had issues with before surgery. I shouldn't think its age related when I had no issues 9 months ago BS (before surgery), I opened things my husband had issues with sometimes - though if you were to ask him..he "loosened it for me!" -
I didn't know could rent one? That's cool. I have a couple of those old 40s wing back style which worked great. wow your drains were in a month! Mine was only in 24 hours so I'm a little nervous about these being on for a week. They gave two binder wraps that they put on in surgery bc some skin is super sensitive.

Does anyone know about BC/BS OK?
DianaG replied to brew44's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Brew, If you are a state employee then the insurance will not be the federal employee insurance, but it is probably very similar except that the specifics of the policy may have a few different twists and turns. For example, the BC/BS I have did not require the 3-6 month pre diet, but I know that other BC/BS policies do require it. Sometimes if the ins. co. doesn't require it, the medical facility, or surgeon will. It can get really confusing! I think it would be a good idea to request a copy of the insurance policy. You can also call and ask a customer service person about what exactly is covered. Then follow up with the request for a copy of the ins. policy. I imagine they have coordinated with your HMO on what is covered. From what you wrote, it does sound like they do cover the surgery, but it is always a good idea to make really, really sure which procedures they cover. Also, do they cover the pre-surgery testing, appointments with diatitians, psychologists, surgeons fee, and hospital costs? Does your insurance have a list of "preferred"physicians and facilities? It is always a good idea to get a referral from a doctor you trust and who has your best interest in mind. I was lucky in finding my surgeon, as he was recommended by my primary care physician and just happened to be the same surgeon who removed my gall bladder several years ago! They are both on the "preferred" list of my ins. co. That was a relief! Good luck and please let us know about your progress. There are really great people on this site that are always willing to help. -
I made it past my goal weight. Throughout my YEARS of dieting I always wanted to shoot for around 175..my magic number..Last Sat I was giving some medication to my dog and forgot how much she weighed..so I grabbed her and got on the scale, then put her back down and got back on...i was at 172..i was so stunned I had to reweigh the dog + me bc I forgot that number! I cant believe that Ive lost over 90 lbs in less than a year..my doc says Im one of thier star clients..To everyone looking for motivation, just keep trying..Theres no point in having a goal if you dont think you can reach it!

Go to your HR office and ask them where to go with the insurance company. I waited until I had the "Your surgery is approved" letter from BC/BS in my hand.

Obesity Help Lawsuit filed by Gary Viscio
MacMadame replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Rants & Raves
I couldn't make myself get through enough of the suit to figure out if it had merit or not. I've heard that the OH people went through a tough time where lots of bs behavior was going on and wonder if the suit was related to that. -
Wow....that's one of the few times I've heard anybody say that! It might sound good, Nancy, but what if the federal government ruled in a way that you didn't like? Then you'd be all "Man it sucks to live here. I'd rather be in Canada". If the fed left more issues for individual states to decide, then at least you could decide to live in a state that had the same political / social beliefs as you. It's almost like political capitalism.
-
Don't you think it's a bit insane that certain southern states still have laws like that? Sometimes the fed government could do more good than harm.

Now girls, I've never had a problem with popcorn and many of you know that I've had PB for several weeks (much better now!) The object is to chew, chew until it dissolves - but I haven't felt the need for the "extra" calories of late and I'm doing much better without the fat that goes with Popcorn. Have a great day. Back to work on Monday - oh and I went Bathing suit shopping!! Yes I got up the courage since the kids had me at the pool all this week and the BS fell off - yes it's ok to laugh!! Ha ha. I got a nice (and striking black one piece with a splash of hot pink and dusty blue)

Good luck Elayne! Keep trudging forward. BC/BS accepted my WW cards, which weren't even for the previous 6 months. I had to follow a 1000 calorie diet for two weeks before surgery and lost 9 pounds in that time frame. So far, it's all been worth it! -

sleigh replied to IndioGirl55's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have just joined this forum and have found the over 50s site. I am being banded in Brussels on the 13th August, 53rd birthday. I live in Scotland and it quite a way to travel, but am fed up being a fatty and no clothes fitting. I am nervous as hell of thought of getting this done. I hope I will get all your support when the time comes. One question though, do I go on a pre diet before the operation. Lesley Sleigh:confused: -

JoannMarie - We share a love of needlework - Quilting for you and embroidery/knitting for me. You are broadening your passion for the quilting arts into writing and I'm making serious plans to teach knitting and embroidery skills. As for the hair business - A beautician/RNY patient addressed our support group about hair loss several weeks ago and recommended "Strength" by Mediceuticals. Apparently their products are also used by Chemo patients. I bought what appears to be a clone product by Sally Beauty. I bought Naturelle yesterday and I'm about to take a shower (to drone out my growling stomach) and use it for the first time. I also kinda-sorta color my hair as it's totally white. I use the color-depositing BROWN shampoo products in my own watered-down version with great results. Interesting side-story to my Sally Spree - The clerk who helped me was in month #4 of her supervised diet for a RNY. She was unaware of the lift of the 6-mo diet requirement by several insurance companies. She's with Geisinger, I'm with BC and she was very excited about contacting her surgeon's practice about her own status. I gave her my card (I have an online-store where I sell needlework originals) and hope to hear from her soon. -

I had my consult last week. I'm a bit dazed but still determined. First snag - Found out at sign-in that my HMO had "cancelled" me. After much frantic calls and #$%(!! - bottom line - "computer error" As a former computer programmer - Don't BS me - I paid the consult fee up front and after 2 hours - finally saw PA and surgeon. Second snag - I AM diabetic - diagnosed nearly 3 years ago - albeit without meds but HMO, endocrinologist, regular Dr and dietitian helping me keep numbers under control. Third - Surgeon recommends the REALIZE band. That's OK with me - but can I still stay in this group for support and gab-fests??? Fourth - After a gazillion diets - I can't provide documentation of Dr-supervised dieting for a period of 6 mos. or more. fist priority BC/BS has me on their weight management program for over a year - maybe that can be submitted. I wasn't the best patient - there was a lot of "stuff" during that period and the dieting was low priority (seriously sick daughter, 2 knee surgeries for me, broken toe, a new knee for my mom with me still on crutches - ad nauseum So - I'm moving forward with my evaluation testing and worst case scenario - 6 month nutritionist supervised diet. And WHY is a physical therapist required? Anyone else have to do that? -
August Sleevers-How are you doing??
Allie589 replied to Ash_Bri85's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Try not to be so hard on yourself. We are going from one extreme lifestyle (for me, massive over eating and using food for all sorts of reasons) to the sleeved lifestyle, which is extremely opposite. We are all figuring it out at our own pace. You’re aware of how and what needs to be done so take baby steps. I find if I take baby steps, I am more successful-change one small thing at a time. I always failed before the surgery bc I would try to do too much and then when I fell short of what I was wanting to do, I’d feel like a failure and then go do the total opposite. You’re doing great! We are all there with ya!! Sleeved 8/7/17 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: 197 on 1/3/18 5'7" GW: 150 -

Adam- im a nurse and im tellin you, you must take more time off- if you cant get it, you should postpone surgery till you can-- especially with having a steenuous on your feet job.... Often times anethesia can linger for over seven days- you're exhuasted, kinda weak bc youre only taking in clears..... My husband is a teacher and he was able to return after 2weeks.... I was off for four weeks.....Talk more with your doc but returning to a physically strrnuous job after 4 days is asking for complications..... Best to you;) -
