I'm almost 3 weeks Pre-op and other people seem much more excited than I do.
blondebomb replied to Blazzrr's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been thinking of this for 15 yrs..I had 2 specialist refer me to have this done. I have had 2 yrs of psychotherapy. ..I see a therapist regular. I have been on every diet known to man an then some. I had turned to food over 30 yrs ago have yoyod weight this whole time. Iv learned thru therapy what is the underlying issues of this learned behavior an I have stopped that cycle for the most part I slip here an there but I don't use food for comfort or fill a void an I'm not saying everyone does or anyone on this forum. I'm just saying about me. Some of my issues are depression when I'm in a rut for the most part I'm stable winter gloomy days are worst at times but I do take medication to keep it controlled. I am also for most of life hypothyroidism. ..this yr I finally seen an endocrinologist an insisted on certain test...finally was dx with hashis an insulin resistance. So the past 15 months I have put on another 50 pds...this weight is exhausting to carry. I'm at 255 I've never been this big.an I'm tired of beating myself up bc no matter wat I do the weight keeps goin up. ..I have to eat less then 400 cal in order to loose anything but just eating that amount with such a large stomach I feel starved an growls all the time if I do that but by reducing the size I will b satisfied with baby portion. Sure enuff I met criteria an more.I'm a committed person that's just my personality an this will enable me as a tool to just eat to live an not live to eat. I can't think of wks or months down the road I don't make plans period I take one day at a time. Its overwhelming if you worry about down the road.if I don't do this I'll continue down this road of misery an fat with no self esteem an continue hiding an let life just pass by or I can do this for me an get healthy. But this has been my journey an the steps I took to get here. Therapy saved me! She helped me by looking at other perspectives for me...I'm not saying this for you but this is wat I've done already an things have just fallen into place...its normal for second thoughts it's serious step. Iv just made up my mind I want to change my life. I'm 50 yrs old...I've spent 35 yrs overweight an unhealthy. I wish you the best an I hope my experiences can help you...sory so lengthy. ..be sure your ready with heart an mind.... -
I don't see where you can find what you want to ask bc there are a million posts with a million answers. So why not make a new one that is subjected to yourself! Basically don't be snotty just bc you see a repeat and I think if you do then your in the wrong tab! Bc I look at this daily and I don't see repeats by different people usually it's the same post from days ago bc someone new posted on it... Also drinking and smoking should always be a no it's not good for y'all in the long run Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

That was excellent thank you lol. I guess I'm afraid that I will be one of those dumbasses too haha. That is my personality. I push myself and think I'm super woman, and I am not lol. That was helpful because this type of information is so hard to find on the net because the sites are written by doctors and they say how long the recovery is but it is too general. The way they word it, I picture myself having to lie down for 2 weeks straight, and I can't do that with a bunch of little cats depending on me to be fed. Thank you.

HELLO! 23/F/student looking into lapband.....
jml108 replied to Steph.K's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Steph, my name is John. I'm currently on the road to surgery at Depaul Hospital. If you're considering this, you're in the right city for it. The doctors at Depaul pioneered laproscopic lapband surgery. They've done this procedure longer than anyone else in the country because they performed the FDA trials on the procedure. I've been to a few other doctors and have been less than impressed with them. Also, Depaul doesn't charge this stupid "program fee" which could be in upwards of $500 and is not covered by insurance. It is simply a payment to the doctor for the procedure. It's BS in my opinion. I haven't had the surgery yet but my interaction with the staff at the Depaul Weight Loss Center has been good. I'm looking forward to getting this surgery, losing this weight, and getting on with the rest of my life. Good luck on your journey. John -
Dr MICHEL GAGNER, Montreal, anyone? need reassurance before i take the plunge!
Darcia replied to shimmer's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
There is aftercare but minimal is included. I will b speaking to him on the phone at one month post op. Blood work is done at 3,6 and 12 months. I went to my family doctor and she requisitioned blood work for me now bc of the transfusions. U have 2 nutritionist consults included in your fee w dr Gagner. I had the first one a week before surgery by telephone. It was an hour conversation. I did not feel rushed. The second one will b 2-3weeks post op. That one may b more helpful as iam now trying to put into practice what they sent to me on paper. I won't lie, drinking and eating at this early stage is so hard. U feel full a few sips in. It's unimaginable but totally true. So one small Protein Meal Replacement drink I bought takes an hour or more to get in. Iam constantly sipping. No straws! Hi SBlue I'm struggling now! Its 4 weeks post op and I'm starting to get really hungry. Managing to get things down much easier - I've been eating a lot of chilli and spaghetti bolognese (Blended). Tried toast - nearly killed myself! Getting fed up of Soup for lunch and really need to try and think of something else to eat at lunchtime. I'm craving sweet things terribly, but I'm having a little low fat chocolate mousse every now and again. I've lost about 18lbs which isn't bad, but I thought I'd have lost more than that (being very unrealistic)!! Otherwise I'm doing very well -I've been getting a few comments about my weight loss. The only thing is constipation (sorry way to much information) and my skin is starting to sag EEEKKK!!! Went for a 4 mile walk on Monday - going for another tonight. First fill 6th August - can't come quick enough. LOL xxx PS - No Regrets either! xxx:thumbup:

Have I tried HARD ENOUGH?
RebecaSparkles replied to EarthyGoalie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey there, I'm 28- I started this journey at 25 but got every road block. Finally got through them & am scheduled for an Oct surgery. Don't wait, the odds are so stacked against you doing it on your own. I'm 5'2 bmi 39 also was 41 when I started. I actually had to gain to get approved- total bs- my pcos wasn't enough to get approved. That I was bigger around than I was tall terrified me & I ended up getting high bp with the last 10#. My friends all fired me bc they dont agree w/ my decision to do this but we all did WW together & I never really lost anything. I am sick of being fat. Its not "fun" anymore. My losing cal per day is 1200- I am miserable on that little w/a normal sized stomach. I can eat 1200 so easily in one meal. I looked around my house & there were diet pepsi's everywhere. My soda addiction was so out of control. I'm now off it in anticipation of surgery. I am not off caffine but I did swap to the great value sf energy mix powder. I lost what I did by eating1 meal & doing shakes for the rest. Also miserable, but nice to lose some. The hardest part of all this has been admitting to myself that I am unhappy with being fat. I am super confident in my daily life but having to be real with myself has left me feeling vulnerable. Hope this helps. allons-y -
What Was The Worst... (Newbie Here!)
sarahr0 replied to Alexis's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
congrats! I had an excellent recovery process... I'm only 9 days post op and have felt amazing since day 1. I have had no pain and no problems keeping anything down. it has been the best decision of my life. I am 28 and my only regret is not doing it sooner! I wanted to do it now while I was young, only 100lb overweight, no health problems like high blood pressure or diabetes. I didn't wanna have to do in my 40s when I had all these problems. bc they all run in my family. I am down 24.2 from may 2... start of my liquid dust and 12lb from surgery day! it's crazy! I also went to two different seminars. I've been reading message boards and watching YouTube and have gained a ton of knowledge. luckily for me.. I didn't have to wait a long time... my insurance didn't require it. my initial dr appt was march 15 and I was sleeved may 16. I was on top of all my preop appts! honestly for me the hardest part was not being able to have any liquids day of surgery and also the barium for the X-ray. the only time I had to vomit was from that stuff :/ good luck and you'll do great -
10 pounds in one day after surgery? You?
Makulafamy replied to Makulafamy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks ladies! That helps. Common sense tells me that its all the fluids, I stayed the night and had a constant drip also...but still...there is a part of me that wants to stomp my foot like a three year old and pout bc I worked so hard with the preop liquid diet and lost a lot of Water weight (15 pounds in 6 days) and now its back! When you are aching you want to step on the scale and see it go down...sort of a confirmation that the pain is worth it. Today is my third day out. I had a baaaad night trying to sleep on the couch. Woke up in a good amount of pain...but I think most of it was from the couch. I crawled into our waterbed today and it actually felt good (of course I took my pain meds also!) Thanks for posting. I needed some encouragement! -
Anyone Been Banded 8 Yrs Or More Like Me?
Vicki Osbourne replied to ibbanded's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my surgery on 6 Jan 2012. I feel so much better it is unbelievable. However i havent had a fill yet as the NHS has now refused to pay for my op and have refused to fund follow up care. I am waiting to see if the doctor can achieve anything regarding this before going bak to private care if i have to . My weight is rising at the moment which is making me very sad! It always seems to be very up and down with the band. Its either too tight or too loose. I really dont seem to have hit the 'sweet' spot and am fed up of having to go up and down with my clothes sizes. I have 3 different wardrobes depending on where i am at the time! -
possible reasons why the weight isn't coming off
Just Banded posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been reading this new book called the Stubborn Fat Fix. It discusses all kinds of foods and how they affect your body. For example, think about the meat you eat- the animals were fed antibiotics that cause them to gain weight and it gets passed to us. So I am trying to make sure the meat I eat is antibiotic and hormone free. I think the ONLY way to know for sure is making it yourself. The lost goes on about so many foods.... I will post more later ...food for thought -
Hello all, So, I started college when I was 15 years old and finished my AA degree and graduated before I got my High school Diploma. (early warning, I suck at spelling still!!). I took 6 months off when I was done with my highschool diploma and I took a road trip to find myself. I had a really bad break up my senior year. I litterally gained 100 lbs since then. I started my BS in psychology spring semester of 2007. I finished my BS degree in one year, last may and I'm currently still going because I'm working on doing research and I am an Ambassador. I am only 20, 5 months until my 21st bday.. Seems like it took forever to get here! I have super senior itis and I've lost all my motivation lately. I work a full time graveyard job taking care of disabled clients, its hard work because they never listen lately. I wish I didn't work, but im paying for everything myself. I was working at a day care program on campus this year and the kids kept saying comments on how fat I am, they didnt mean to hurt me, but I didn't truely realize how fat I had gotten until then. I started researching this information and within a month or two I decided I needed it or I was going to die. My mom didnt agree with it and would make comments about how I have so much willpower with school that I could do this too. I was like no I can't if I could I would have done it a long time ago. I was going to die if I kept on my own path and she slowly realized that. I decided I was going to do it no matter what and a month later I had surgery and havent looked back since. It's been a little over 5 months since surgery and I've lost 62 lbs. I went from 303-241 lbs. I've lost over 20 inchs and went from a 24/22 pant to an 18. I have a long way to go which fustrates me, I need to focus on 5 lbs at a time, just doing that is hard. I hit my 60 lbs mark for halloween and it was great, I took a night off, well what I thought would be a night and I've lost all my motivation since then. I need to get back on track but cant find my motivation.. Does that happen to others? This month is just stressful because of all the papers and things due for school. Well sorry this post was so long, I wasn't expecting it to be this long. Take care ~Jade

How's everyone doing? I'm tired :/ Not abnormal. And I know it was major surgery. I'm tellin ya - if anyone has a hiatal hernia repaired during their surgery, it's a doozie! I'm getting in my 64 oz fluids in. Wondering if i need more bc i am not needing to use the bathroom more than 2x a day. But this is SC sweating weather. But pre op i drank way more Water. Tho guidelines said to "aim for at least 40 grams protein", I'm trying to keep with the 60 grams. Been able to since I came home on Friday. I decided on the Centrum silver chewables. Got my Calcium citrate. Almost gagged on one of those today! Gonna pick up the sublingual B-12 tomorrow. I wanna do all I can to protect my hair!! That's all for now. Thanks for listening!

My gynecologist told me that the best BC for any WLS (including us) is either the Nuva Ring or Mirena. She said this is because for some patients, hormones after surgery may go wacky and make the pill form under perform, resulting in pregnancy!!! I have been on the Nuva Ring for three months and really like it. I don't feel it after it is inserted and I just have to remove it once a month. I would love Mirena, but my insurance will only cover it if there is medical necessity and not for birth control purposes.

Right now all you can do is eat your Protein and take Biotin, although the latter of the two is debatable as to how well it works. As your body recovers from being terrified that you cut out your stomach and only fed it liquids and soft food for awhile, it will eventually divert resources back to your less important areas, like the skin and follicles in your scalp. In theory, losing hair as a result of stress or nutritional changes is your body trying to save you from death- it sends the important resources to your vital organs. I suppose its rationale is that you can be bald and alive, or you can have hair and be dead, and while it's kind of an extreme analogy, that's the "thought" process of the body when it goes through major trauma and nutritional change. That being said, now that you are done traumatizing your body it will eventually realize that you are not trying to kill it and it will slowly give you back your hair. The better you feed yourself and keep up with your nutrition, the more quickly your body will relax and think "ok cool, we aren't dying, let's have pretty hair again". My body did not decide to give me back my hair again for awhile, lol. I lost hair I think around 5 months, and it stayed thin for awhile, probably almost 18 months. Then it started growing back and at 2 years, half of it fell out again, although I'm pretty sure that was more just stress hair loss than anything to do with my sleeve. It has now been about 8 months since my last "omg I'm going bald" incident and I can feel that my hair is thickening. When I brush it there is a giant poof around my ears where the new hair has grown in and the older hair is still thinner. I've also paid a lot of attention to Vitamins the last few months because my thin hair bothered me. I'm not sure if biotin works or not but I've been taking a lot of it and it's not like it's hurting me, so maybe it's working. At any rate...your hair will slowly start to grow back and the best thing you can do is eat well, be kind to your hair, and maybe invest in a hat. Jk on that last one, lol.

So how are you doing now? I came across this thread bc I am actually 5 weeks today and lost only like 15 if that. I haven't exactly been the "best" patient though...going through some family/marital issues and got off track so I'm sure that has alot to do with my amount but I'm hoping to get back on track asap and hopefully lose some more. Need to drop 30lbs for surgeon
mrsob1 replied to mrsob1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so much. I'm so tormented by this weight. I think once I finally got the courage to ask for help and decided to have WLS I realized how fed up I really am and how it really is effecting so many aspects of my life and the lives of those around me. -
Plastics in Two Weeks! Give Me ALL the Advice!
jess9395 replied to Indieflickers's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Yes they flatten out. Mine took maybe 3 months. Shaving yeah ugh. I still miss spots bc of the scars and am thinking of getting laser hair removal! I waited for about three months to even attempt. I had no lipo on my arms so I never had sleeves just two weeks of ace bandages. Activity--totally feel your pain! I ran a full marathon a week before my plastics and six weeks off running made me CRAZY! I did tv and went out to movies. Wish I had some better ideas. And I did gain weight. I will be honest. More food and less exercise, I gained about 10 lbs and not much of it was swelling. BUT at six weeks out when I could run again it was very easy to take it back off. -
I too experienced very similar problems and results. BUT because of the results i was achieving i choose to alter my eating habits to liquids for a week then slowly bringing foods back into my diet, i find that i cant eat a lot of things now that im tighter but hey im down to a size 16 which is SO worth it to me. If you have a problem drinking a protein shake at that time i would concider an unfil (slighly) (like .25cc) but only bc you need those nutrients. Good luck !

It's for real this time...for myself, for my kids, for my life
mommywifeandfat replied to aprilstar82's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi April. I too am 30. Been with my husband 14 years this September and have a 3 year old. I looked into the surgery 6 years ago, didn't like it. Thought about it a few years ago but the thought of not having a baby for over a year after put me off again. Finally last year was all I could take. My dog died last January after being by my side for 14 years. My life was him. Especially the last several years as I am a stay at home mom, an he was sick. So I took care of him as u would a child. His death sent me in a deep depression. I mean I didn't care about anything. I had to force myself to smile or laugh at my daughter. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and possible lupus. I have high blood pressure. The list goes on. I finally decided it was time for this!! My process started oct 2, 2012. I weighed 367lbs. Between then and surgery date which was Jan 14th I lost 38lbs. Since surgery I have lost another 30. I am 5.5weeks out. I regretted my decision my very first night home bc after over a 2 hr drive I was in horrible pain. I have never regretted my decision. I am smaller than I have been since my wedding. Day o surgery was my last blood pressure meds, and after taking lortab for only 3 days after surgery I haven't taken a pain pill since. I was taking 2-4 a day before surgery for horrible pains. Here is my personal key advice: when you read sip sip sip, walk walk walk. Listen!! I was up several hours after surgery and pacing the halls. I came home day after surgery. The next day I was walking a mile... Slow. Don't stop walking! And try to get back to normal as fast as u can. Like don't hide in bed. I was doing dishes and making food for the family. I wasn't lifting or straining. I went shopping and took my daughter to school. I rested for sure and was slower than normal. But force that liquid down! Force it!! Get ur Protein in right from day 2. It helps soooo much. Good luck to you!!! -

My first thought on this was "I call bull shit"...that it was just BS to get something started, however, I've gone back and read some on Baker's old posts and am now VERY concerned this might be real...there are a lot of posts on distance and money from last year.... BB, oh please, I hope you're just messing with people, if this is true you are playing a very dangerous game. I'm a physician assistant with many years of experience in the medical field and a port that is easily accessed and wouldn't dream of doing this...the risks are just outrageous. -
Problem with insurance person
Tyme2GetRite replied to scharkco's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off let me say that it depends on the insurance company as far as what their requirements and guidelines are as far as approval. I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF! i have BC/BS of NewJersey and once i had my consultation with the surgeon they gave me a print out of the requirements. when i got everything together it went to the surgeons office first and they submitted it to the insurance company. i had to have : 5yr history w/ Dr. (just height & weight) 6months w/ Nutrionist Approval letter from PCP Psych eval it can be a mess, make sure you get the names and dates of who you talk to because it seem like someone is not on the same page. you also want to make sure that you do what ever the insurance company wants or they may not approve you :cursing:, UGHHH ! i hated that part. hang in there and don't give up it's worth it ! -
Some facts: -Over 12 million (not 5 million) have lost their insurance coverage due to Obamacare -Over 7 million will remain uninsured because they don't make enough to qualify for the tax credit but make too much to qualify for Medicaid. -Obamcare doesn't only have minimum care standards but maximum. All policies must not only meet minimum standards but they can not exceed the care offered either. If an insurance carrier offers too little or too much, they are fined heavily. -The average insurance cost increase is 41% due to Obamacare. The worst is yet to come: "In 2010, the Health and Human Services Department estimated that 40% to 67% of individual plans would eventually lose their "grandfathered" status, which only was conferred if a plan was purchased before the health care law was approved in 2010." The insurance increases and cancellations ARE because of Obamacare and Obama himself freely admits it. Obama's sorry excuse for an apology for all the loss of policies and idea of fixing it? He gave them a 1 year reprieve. That's it. And that does nothing for policies already canceled. http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/politics/obama-obamacare-apology/ http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2013/11/04/49-state-analysis-obamacare-to-increase-individual-market-premiums-by-avg-of-41-subsidies-flow-to-elderly/ Of course, I have been encouraging everyone who is still drinking the Obamacare Koolaid to read the actual bill. Yes, it's over 1000 pages long. Yes, it took me months but I did read it entirely. But, if you read it and get the facts versus the media bytes being fed to everyone, you'll see the horrible truth for yourself.
