Frustrated...
Maddie replied to NadiaLinISgoing2beThin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3 weeks out and still have water weight and swelling. So, I don't know your particular situation but I know we all lose at different rates. Also, I have heard of many folks hitting a 3 week stall. Wish I had something to offer as advice. Just hang in there and do what you know is right and it will kick in soon. -
Cruising with the sleeve?
stephi5883 replied to vkgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually went on a cruise right at 3 months out, and I had a great time! I had more energy to actually go and do than I have had in a LLOONNGG time. As for the eating, all of the friends that went with us knew about my surgery and were supportive. I had no problems, but I have also been eating in front of other people since I went back to work, around 2 to 3 weeks out, and the people that went on the cruise with us also work for us, so we do lunch every single day together. I was worried before we went that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the cruise post-sleeve as much as I enjoyed them pre-sleeve, but I found the opposite to be true. I just stayed busy, and with the food, stuck with Soups for appetizers, seafood for entree, and skipped dessert altogether, but I don't tolerate milk, chocolate, and sugar very well. I hope this helps! I was actually on a 3 week stall when we left for our cruise, and when we returned home, I was 4 pounds down, and lost 6 pounds the next week! -
I had a 3 week stall at 3 weeks.lol. Hang in there and measure to see if inches are coming off then you're doing great. I feel better too but only walking 1 mile a day..being kind to my knee's. I have gone from 18w jeans to 16 and they are getting loose.YAY!! I'm still trying to work this tool but my loss is satisfactory to me:) and I'm 6 weeks out tommorrow. Does anyone know when we can start sit-ups and other exercises?Carla:confused1:

Venting/stalled/trouble
Tiffykins replied to txrdnk903's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm not sure what guidelines you have for calories/carbs/proteins, and every program is different. I was still on full liquids at 3 weeks into my post-op diet so I can't help you with that part if you're already eating solids except always eat Protein first, then low carb veggies. You're doing fabulous with exercising so keep it up. My guidelines for losing were: 4 meals a day consisting of a minimum of 15grs of protein. No Snacks. 600-800 calories 60gr + protein 30gr of less of carbs steer clear of calorie or sugar filled liquids Adhering to those guidelines the first 4 months gave me 80lbs lost. The 3 week stall is pretty inevitable it seems like most go through it. A few things to look at maybe is to ensure you are getting in enough calories, and Clear Liquids especially with your exercise regimen. If you are eating a lot of slider foods that are higher carb, it can slow down losing. I know once I started adding in more carbs, my loss slowed significantly. Now that I don't limit carbs, and eat a well balanced diet, my loss has stabilized and I'm maintaining. If you're following your program, have faith, and the scale will move. Also try taking some measurements. Once we start working out, our muscles get little tears/rips in them. To heal, they retain Water thus sometimes we don't lose weight even when we are doing everything "right". You could be losing inches because fat is bumpy/lumpy and muscle is lean and more dense. Your clothes may start fitting different, and you might see changes that aren't scale related. Hang in there, the scale will move ! ! ! -
3 Weeks & At A Stall...Need Help
Lookinupin2010 replied to gatormomof2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My '3-week' stall lasted 11 days !!! I just knew that I was going to be the one that this surgery was NOT goint to work for. Fortunately, we can't cheat with the sleeve like we did in the past when we got frustrated. So I just kept plugging along. Considered taking the scale away like others have said. I just couldn't do it. Finally, one morning I had lost 3 pounds !!!!!!!!!! I'm sure I'll never have another stall along the way....but I know that I'm only going one direction.....the good way down. 3 Weeks & At A Stall...Need Help
kalew replied to gatormomof2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, me too, the 3 week stall. Have not lost any more for 9 days now. I keep hearing that our bodies just need to adjust, but I know how you feel. I don't have a problem eating anything in particular, though I can only eat about 4 ounces. Have been getting in all my protein, and eating about 800 cal a day on average. Just started really doing more though as today was the first really pain free day I have had. I feel great! -
Hello everyone, I'm a 34 yo young woman who is very grateful for this forum. I can't tell you all what a great support group this is. I have spent hours and hours and hours here reading posts and finding answers to my questions. Thank you for being here. I'm day 73 post op. I feel like i'm not losing as much as i should be, but i've found myself not exercising as much as i should be. I'm trying to make a commitment to myself to do so so that i can do this the right way. After a 3 week stall, i want that weight to come off! Thanks for listening and hello to all. 01.01.2010 Highest weight 289 03.18.2010 Day of surgery 262 05.29.2010 Current weight 217 Dr. Van Wagner in St. Louis, MO at St Alexius Hospital

You're in the 3 week stall, and it's very common. If I were you, I would trade in those crackers for some cheese, or a higher Fiber carby food such as Beans or edamame. The veggies will give you more fiber, and probably help you feel better in general. If you cook the veggies, try steaming(microwave or stovetop method) or roasting them in the oven. I'm not sure if you can have veggies yet, just check with your nutritionist or surgeon. Also, take your measurement right now, tonight. Measure around your waist, hips, thighs, and chest at least. If the scale doesn't move the next week remeasure and see if you're losing inches. The scale will move, I promise. Your body just dropped 20lbs in 2weeks, been through major surgery, and your feeding it about 1/3 of the calories you ate pre-op. It's kind of pissed off at you for everything you've done to it. Sip more water, try to hit that 60+ mark, that will help keep you from retaining water. Don't stress, your body will hold on to more weight. Put the scale away and don't weigh until Saturday or Monday.

Thanks for the comments guys. It really helps. I also had the surgery so that I could be free from the obsessive dieting that was ruling my life. I like the Protein first philosophy. I guess I was worried because I'm in the midst of the dreaded 3 week stall. I know it will pass... I was just starting to slip into my old thinking patterns re: I have to go on a diet. Thanks Guys Stacey

no loss for almost 2 weeks, help please...
Tiffykins replied to achopp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your bodies need more calories to burn fat, and work properly. It's just how it works, and the dreaded 3 week stalls happens to probably 98% of sleevesters. If you are still on shakes/protein supplements, drink an extra shake. Try adding 100-200 calories a day through a Protein snack/meal for 2-3 days, then get back to 600 calories for a day. Our bodies have been through a traumatic event. We went from consuming 3000 calories a day to a mere 450-500 calories. Least to say, it's not happy about it, and isn't going to let itself starve. It's going to hold onto everything you're giving it. Shake things up, try to not stress, some people put away their scales because it's too stressful. Honestly, when in your life have you ever lost 34lbs in 6 weeks? How amazing is that really? How on God's green Earth could that be a failure? I think that is quite amazing to be honest. I know it would have taken me a solid 4 months of hard core dieting and excessive working out to drop 34 pounds pre-op. Relax, and look at the big picture, we didn't get fat overnight, we can't expect to get skinny overnight. -
One month out today

Congrats on the loss. Men tend to always lose faster than the women. I dreaded that 3 week stall and I seemed to be at it for 2 weeks. I lost 25 the first 2 weeks then stalled for the next 10 days. But I noticed during that stall that I was still sliming down. I was losing inches for sure. I am down 32lbs in 40 days since my surgery. Also congrats on your exercise and biking that much. Keep going! Yesterday I went shopping and bought my first pair of smaller jeans. I even bought them a little bit snug cause I know in a couple weeks they will be looser!!! Thats a nice feeling. Also this morning my youngest son came to give me a hug goodbye as I left for work. He turned around and said.. HOLY mom you are getting thinner! I see it! WOW! did that feel good! I phoned my hubby and told him that whatever my son wanted this weekend he could have... he just went number one in my books Keep going and all the best to you Russ! -
Great job to both you and your lovely wife. You hit the dreaded 3 week stall, and it's very common. I would have to estimate, from all my time on the various forums, that 98% of patients hit a stall around 3 weeks out. Sometimes changing up your menu, or routine helps get the scale moving. Even just upping your calories by 50 calories for just a couple of days can shake things up for your body. Also, take measurements because even though you may not be losing numbers on the scale, you may be losing inches since you're working out building muscle, and the fat is burning. A pound is a pound is a pound. Grant it, lean muscle takes up less space than bulky fat, but it still technically weighs the same as pound of fat. So, take some measurements, and check again in 2-3 weeks to see if you're losing inches. Keep up the great work, and stay focused! ! !

wondering if I am on track
ChristiMD replied to Timetofly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am at exactly 34 pounds lost at 9 weeks. I had about a 2-3 week stall right at my third week out. It seemed I lost 20 pounds in about 2 weeks and then it all came to a grinding halt. After the stall, I had a big week (8 pounds) and the past few weeks it is at 2-3 pounds a week. I never know what to expect when I weigh in once a week. I started out quite heavy (301.5 on surgery date and I am only 5'2" tall). And I have also been afraid I am not losing enough fast enough. But I also never was a thin person. I was very healthy and active in college and still weighed a little over 200 pounds. Now I'm almost 43 years old, and I will be amazed if I can get down to 200. So I am just keeping at this, plugging away, and trying not to worry. I'm seeing good results and making solid progress even if I'm not the biggest loser! Just keep the faith!! -
How many calories am I supposed to have per day?
Tiffykins replied to Sabrina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's tough to get enough calories in when we aren't hungry. Most patients experience the "evil 3 week stall" so you aren't in the minority here. I had a goal of 4 meals a day consisting of at least 15-20 grams of Protein per meal. I didn't really snack, just focused on meals, and getting my protein in. But, if you stay too low on calories, your body can hang onto the weight out of pure survival. If you're working out, or walking a lot, your body needs calories to burn the fat. -
How long was your stall? and what did you do to break it?
nagaraj replied to filodough's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not only the 3 week stall, I have perhaps had longer ones thattotally depressed me until I found such wonderful people of this forum. Thankfully 6 week out and I am doing fine inch wise but weight keeps fluctuating before it goes down. But life is simply great post VSG. No diabetic medication, no hypertension medication. Can actually walk 3 miles, feel fit and can actually jog - something that I could never do before. -
WOOHOO! I broke my 3 week stall! Only by 1 pound but I broke it. Since I had gotten out of the hospital with the complicatons I bounced from 203 to 204. Today I was 202.0! I realized that I was not eating enough calories. My carb intake stays pretty close to 30. My Protein is hitting 50-65. But I'm lucky if I hit 500 calories. It seems the stuff that has the best protein doesnt have many calories. I could add a Protein Bar in there but then my carbs would skyrocket. Does anyone else have this problem ?

OK - That's IT! I am STILL not losing!
rcarter76 replied to rcarter76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Ruby! IT looks like after your 3 week stall you lost another 30 in what, 4-5 weeks? That is super encouraging! This is my 3rd week to stall, so let's hope I follow suit. I have stopped eating fruits and have really watched everything and make sure I keep active. I "feel" better, but I should measure this weekend, since I have NO idea what my stats are and at least that would keep me motivated! Jkared, you and I had surgery on the same day, you are DOING GREAT! Thanks for the inspiration and tips! -
Hey Barb- Trying my best to stay warm, but man is it cold outside! Glad you're feeling better. Normal will return. I have to keep telling myself, "Anna, you did just have MAJOR surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago. You're going to be tired." I weigh on Saturdays and this week I've GAINED 2 pounds. Not what I want. I'm blaming on my period, since I have been the best I've ever been about sticking to a diet/eating plan. I am a little worried that this may be my 3 week stall - Lord, I hope not. That would be cruel. I'm hovering right above 200 and can't wait to be on the other side. Even thought you feel like you're eating a lot, I bet it's nowhere close to what you ate before. I've been measuring my food and can usually eat between 1/4 to 1/2 cup and I'm stuffed!! Hang in there and stay warm yourself!

OK - That's IT! I am STILL not losing!
rcarter76 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok everyone, I LOVE this forum, because everyone is so positive, helpful, caring, kind and successful! But this is the third week I have not lost weight! I will be 5 weeks out on Monday and lost tons pre-op and 2 weeks post op. I know everyone says there is the 3 week stall (I am going on week 5), and that your body adjusts to eating soft foods from liquids and all that jazz. But this week I checked my caloric intake, (800 per day), my Protein is on target (60-80 g daily) and I drink plenty of H2o. I have been in touch with my nutritionist etc and we tweaked my diet a bit, but that was almost a week ago. What gives? I don't want to be negative nancy or a sourpuss, but this is depressing. I am barely eating, have been walking 1.5-2 miles every other day and am getting plenty of sleep. I would just like to know, has this happened to anyone else, does it start coming off again, and what are your experiences. My doc said that I should not have a plateau for 6 mos to a year , and I am only a month out so I am super concerned. I have my follow up with him next Tuesday, but I feel like he will give me the same old, "Work the plan, the plan will work" adage and I just want to feel good and NORMAL. Please post any such plateaus, regardless of where you hit them, how much you lost in your first month etc. I was 269 day of surgery and have been toggling between 250-253 for over 2 weeks now. Very frustrating. Any suggestions would be appreciated, along with comments, help, and stories. Thanks, Rachel:001_unsure: -
Pounds are coming off, Things are going well !!!
i1Linda replied to JudyJudyJudy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Dawn - Welcome to VST and congratulations on your recent surgery. First off, follow your surgeons instructions especially these first 6 weeks. Let your knew little tummy heal properly. Don't worry about what you can't eat right now, it's not forever. It's not that you can't have it, you just can't have it now. Just 6-8 weeks. You will again be able to eat things you shouldn't occasionally, but your sleeve will help control how much. Walk - get in some exercise and get the blood moving. Sip - stay hydrated. Weight loss rate depends on how much you have to lose. I lost a little every day until the 3 week stall. Then during week 4, weight loss started up again. I seem to lose weight in a stair step pattern (if you plot on a graph), nothing for several days/week than a bunch of pounds over a couple of days, then nothing for several days, etc. You can browse through the forum and see different people's tickers and see their weight loss progression. Good luck on your journey and feel free to ask questions. I have found incredibly supportive and knowledgeable people here - we are all in this together. -
more than a 3 week stall? anyone?? please HELP
okalani posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ALOHA EVERYONE!! Okay I was sleeved on October 8th 2009....I was losing weight on a steady pace....then once I hit a lost of about 30 pounds....it just STOPPED :huh0:. I know I have heard of the stall occuring for about 1-2 weeks....but 3 weeks now? Is this normal....I am hoping that I didn't have this surgery done to only lose 30 pounds....and on top of that I have gained about 2 pounds.....what is going on?? someone please help...I am getting so discouraged now -
AJW - you're right, we are TWINS! So cool. My goal is 140 (really 139...want to be in the 130's for some reason). Once I get down closer, I plan to reevaluate. Everyone tells me I will be too skinny lower than 140 but I can't imagine me ever being "too skinny". I finally broke my nearly 3 week stall at 182 today.... down to 179 - yippee!!! I haven't been in the 170's since well before my first pregnancy (about 9 years). :001_tt2:

need some motivation
carolyn24seven replied to sweetie333's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh sweetie, you are in such a hurry. I am the impatient type also. But, it does not work that way. Think of the sleeve as a turtle or snail. they go slowly along their way and get there in the end. It is the end results that matter. You have been successful so far and will continue. Do not worry about this 3 week stall. Keep on your program and walk. You will be getting a new outfit or two for Christmas for sure. Keep the faith, slow down your expectations, and get outside and enjoy life. Do not wait to be a certian size to enjoy yourself. Every moment counts. I go back to eating soups whenever I eat something that my tum does not like. I will re-introduce that food again in a month or so. Soups and protein drinks have been my fall back position since surgery. Do not worry about what yur Tum does not like now, it will again later. Aren't you just amazed at how little you are eating? Ya gotta know in your head that you will be loosing weight with the reduced intake. The scale will catch up. Honest. -
blood clots....please help
okalani replied to okalani's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hopefully all goes well with you pcp...let us know what happens. I meet with my Surgeon on Saturday for my post op. He orginally told me that in the first month he anticipates me to lose 30 pounds.....but so far I have lost 20 pounds at 2 weeks. Will I keep losing weight or will I go through the 3 week stall? Does everyone go through the weight stall? -
Hooray. My 3 week stall is over! Onward and downward!
