  1. I'm glad you got over it OK. It is a very serious condition that can happen to sleevers if they get a severe gallbladder attack. "When acute pancreatitis is mild, the death rate is about < 5%. However, in pancreatitis with severe damage and bleeding, or when the inflammation is not confined to the pancreas, the death rate can be as high as 10 to 50%." Acute Pancreatitis: Pancreatitis: Merck Manual Home Edition
  2. Hershey, Keep on working the program. You can do it. The preop diet will make it less likely that the liver will slip and slide around, and you will be less likely to have it "nicked" during surgery (which can cause hemorrhage, blood transfusions, more days in the hospital or worse....) Do it for yourself. And post op, follow the prescribed diet to reduce the risk of leak, which can be lethal. You can do it! Once you see pounds falling off, you will be even more motivated.

    Can anyone help????

WOW, that WAS a close call! I can't imagine having a band...to think that you almost did. What relief you must feel! The starts are lining up for you...you'll be skinny soon!

    Depressed and hungry

Cornbread (anything with corn or bread in the title!!!) are high glycemic index foods and may have given you an elevated blood sugar, then a rush of insulin, especially if you are insulin resistant. That could have been what you felt. Avoid starches as well as sugars, especially this early in your recovery. Protein is best.
  5. Watch for elevated Total Biliruben, AST, ALT. If they are up you may need surgery right away. Watch for fever and elevated WBC count.

    Gallbladder issues and surgery

Tiff, I am so glad you finally got to talk with a surgeon, and have an experienced one. It's laparoscopic surgery usually, and you've been there done that...you will feel so much better once it is out. Beware of any foods containing fats until then! Did they check you liver function tests? (see my other post) If I lived closer I'd come clean house for you...but I'll settle on sending some "positive cajun voodoo" for your quick recovery. The Reiki will help you too...great gift! Hang in there girl!
  7. Tiff, Sorry to hear about your gallbladder. Glad you found out what the problem was...why wasn't he getting your messages? That sucks. Inflammation of the gallbladder is nothing to mess around with, it can result in serious complications if not taken care of right away, if your liver function tests were high...pancreatitis, sepsis can result. Please don't let them put you off. Were you liver function tests normal?
  8. I loved greek yogurt, cream soups, Jay Robb shakes made with lactaid milk, and home made soups that I pureed in my blender, during the full liquid stage.

    Diabetes and The Sleeve

I don't have DM myself but I've read posts from a lot of diabetics who say it disappeared after their sleeve. My hypertension and depression disappeared after I lost about 50 lbs...no more meds. Boy, is that great! Good luck with losing your diabetes!!!

I like the Jay Robb Whey protein powder shake, chocolate flavor. You can get it online and at health food stores. It comes in individual packet servings as well as big containers, so I tried a small packet first before investing in a large quantity. I make it with lactaid milk, and add a splash of banana flavoring. It tastes good and no aftertaste like a lot of the protein drinks..
  11. thinoneday: I don't know why, but a lot of sleevers don't tolerate eggs until months into recovery...so you might just want to put them on the shelf for a while. And when you do try them, be sure they are real soft. Give your sleeve a rest when you have a "sleeve reject" day...go back to mushies and liquids for 24 hours so it can heal. It's probably screaming at you right now! This too shall pass!

    Can anyone help????

Let us know what company your insurance is with and those on the forum who have it too may be able to help more. Mine is Cigna and they don't cover the sleeve. I was not entirely unhappy about it, because I did not want to have to jump through 6-12 months of hoops, tests, waiting, before I could get the sleeve, once I knew that was what I wanted. I had saved up, and did research on surgeons, then made my choice, In a month, I had my sleeve. It was so easy and no arguing with insurance. The cost in Mexico was about half what it would have cost in the US. I paid 8700. Dr Jossart in San Francisco charges 1700 plus the cost of labs etc. In some places it is much higher than that. I hope you can get your sleeve without too much of a wait. Good luck!
  13. Hooray for you! Welcome to the loser's bench! So glad for your great error...I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Now just sip, walk, rest and burp. Let us know how you are progressing.

    I am NORMAL!

    Awesome kiddo!!! Congratulations!
  16. Loser: sounds like you are doing great on your preopdiet. Your liver should be nicely shrunk, making for a much safer surgery. Are you driving yourself home? Be sure you stop every 45-60 minutes and walk around some, to prevent blood clots during the drive. Best of luck to you. Let us know how you are doing.
  17. I saw a nutritionist for the first visit last week at the suggestion of my internist. She was shocked about the 600-800 calorie, 70 gm Protein, 30-60 gram carb recommendation for the first 6 months post VSG. She advised me on starting a training program with free weights, and cardio exercises, along with increasing intake to 1200 calories with more balanced version of the diet. Here's my problem: I'm losing weight following my surgeon's recommendations, and do not want to mess with what is working for me. But I do agree that exercise is beneficial, however I could probably not sustain a moderately intense exercise program with the small amount of food, mostly protein, that I am eating. I do a little treadmill walking and do get dizzy often, and have to stop. I have attributed this to either not enough fluids or not enough carbs on board to sustain me. My plan was to use the treadmill as much as I can tolerate it safely, but wait on the intense exercise plan until after I reach goal, and am able to eat 1200 calories a day. Now I am confused. I read some interesting information on the OH website at Fluid requirements. How can I possibly add carbs? They are so filling. I am still thinking that the first 6 months I should follow my surgeon's advice. What do y'all think?
  18. Try Jay Robb chocolate whey Protein shake. With one cup of lactaid fat free milk, it is 33 grams protein and 190 calories. Laughing Cow cheese wedges, four tiny wedges throughout the day for Snacks will add 10 gms of protein and 140 calories! Get 600-800 calories, 70 or more gms protein and at least 65 ounces of fluids will give you the best wt loss. Below that, the body does not like to shake it off for some reason. Congratulations of breaking the stall!
  19. Awesome job on your presurg wt loss! We are moving over to make room for you on the loser's bench, where you have lots of friends! Keep in touch!
  20. RLocke, I agree, your surgeon needs to know if you are in severe pain. There may be a complication that needs to be attended to. Please call him right away! Are you sipping clear fluids and allowing a burp between each sip? I found that at first, if I did not let a little burp come up, I had a lot of esophageal spasm, which is really bad pain. Also if I warmed my fluids a little, there was less discomfort swallowing. Warm caffiene-free spice teas were great, as well as home made chicken broth. I did not need pain meds once I was home, but had a box of Toradol that Dr Aceves gives all his patients at discharge, in case I needed them. Your surgeon should prescribe something for you. Let us know how you are doing! We are cheering for you and glad to have you with us on the loser's bench.
  21. Ask for something for the nausea or pain as soon as you feel the slightest twinge, you will get it right away. Rest, walk, sip, burp and you'll get through these hardest days. Then you will see the pounds just melt away! Congratulations on joining the loser's bench! We are cheering for you!
