    swallowing pills

My doc told me that I shouldn't swallow anything larger than a plain m&m. So, I am trying to do more chewable and liquid. But as everyone has said, everyone is different.

    July fireworks

Hey everyone, I thought I would start a new thread for us Kansans to gab in for the month of July. I hope that we can set up a network to stay in touch with We can all work together and become great friends :Banane22: Keep up the hard work and feel free to ask anyone questions.

    port discomfort

I also have this pain. I have asked my doctor about it and he has said that some people experience more discomfort around the port area than others. I can also feel mine when I bend over and so forth. I can tell when I sit for long periods of time that I get more port pain depending on how I sit because of the fact that I can feel the port. I have no advice to offer though. Sorry. I look forward to seeing if anyone else is experiencing this.
  4. Hey everyone, I am begging for some advice for some low carb, high protein "soft foods". I have been trying to read all of the posts here, but with me working full-time and going to school full-time my time is limited. I could really use some good ideas. I like the recipes that have been posted along the lines of sheppards pie (which I can chew, chew, chew). I'm going to make the tuna melts that were listed on the site for the before and after book (that I hope to buy soon). Any more ideas would be appreciated!!!! I'm tired of the same ole same ole. But I am also supposed to be incorporating regular foods in the next few days. Any help please... :help:

    Challenge To Every Body!

Well I am also moving in the right direction... My original weigh in was 254 and I am now at 252.4. I have increased my walking. I am trying to increase my walk by 1/4 each day. But with my schedule I am going to have to cap it off. I am up to 1 3/4 miles. I believe my cap is going to have to be 2 miles for a bit anyway. Keep up the hard work everyone.

What does everyone do for a living?

The drug reps are definitely to blame in my case. Heck, at the place I work we get breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. There is CONSTANTLY food around and only a couple of the reps bring healthy food. I am nervous because I go back to work tomorrow for the first time since surgery and I have to make sure I do a good job packing foods that I can eat. But lizzilo you are right!

    Why are YOU Fat?

I didn't gain weight until I was in the mid-20's when I found out my liver was having problems. I managed to exercise, diet, and take phentermine to lose all of the weight I had gained. I maintained 140's for a year. Then my doctor started me on insulin to control my blood sugars. From that point on I lost control. Before I knew it, I was 50, then 80, then 100+ lbs over weight. My endocrinologist told me that in order to get my sugars under contol I needed to lose weight. Which I said was easier said than done. That is when I looked towards the lap-band. I have never been an emotional or stress eater. But I will confess with school and work, homework load and work demands I may not have always grabbed the foods I should have. Eating on the go is never a good thing.
  8. Hey ofps, I am sorry I misread your msg to me because you said that you went to Dr. Stewart, which is another one of the doctors there. I think it is cool that you and I were there within day and had the same procedure and the same doctor. I am shocked that you went to work the day after though, because I have been home for 2 weeks until all of the soreness subsided. But hey, everyone is different. I know I took some of it off just to be off from work. A mini vacation if you will. I'm doing great though. We should keep in touch and keep up with our progress. I can always share with you what happens in the support meetings. Sorry for my misunderstanding. I was also a cash pay. Darn insurance doesn't pay for that anymore. I will try to pop on here later and if anything you and I will fill up this board!

    Walking / Jogging

Tricia, Thanks for all of your kind words. I think you were referring to me. I will keep that in mind about the smaller weights with more reps. I hope that helps. I am feeling much better about myself. Even with the numbers that I have so far. I try not to compare myself to others because I know my case is different. But honestly, thanks for your wonderful words. If that was not directed at me... hehe.. I will be quiet now with foot in mouth. Keep up the work

    Walking / Jogging

Puddinpie (cute name by the way), I am very interested about your last post. That is an interesting way to look at it. I never thought about it being better to lose the weight first then work on building muscle. I have never researched it. You have added another thing for me to look in to. Thanks for the research you have done. Maybe I should get a trainer...

    Walking / Jogging

Tellymelly... All great points. I can't wait until the weight restriction is over. Does anyone else have such a long weight lifting restriction??? I have a month of no more than 20 lbs. We need to not stay focused on the numbers of the scale but the overall body appearance and good health. We must all try hard not to become obsessed with numbers only.

Socalgal3, Don't worry about your rate of loss. The main point is that you are still losing. Your body was put into a bit of a shock with surgery. So you will have rollarcoaster episodes until it gets back to it's new realm of normality. Keep up the hard work. Drink plenty of liquids and keep getting some bit of exercise. Work on increasing the amount of walking you do as you can tolerate it. Good luck!!!
  13. Hey Tracy, I live in the Topeka area... I had my banding done a the Tallgrass Surgery Center. Dr. Brent Steward was my surgeon and he is great. He has a wonderful bedside manner and answers all of your questions for you. I will give you a more direct link to the Tallgrass surgery center, and I can also give you the email address to one of the bariatric coordinators so you can get more answers. Feel free to email me and I will give you the email address as well as any other information you want. http://www.tallgrasstopeka.com

What does everyone do for a living?

I am currently an LPN working in an endocrinology clinic (diabetes and other glandular diseases). I am back in school full time working towards becoming a nurse practitioner.

    Thirtysomething's

Hey lookingout, I have been very picky and choosy with who to tell. My family knows of course, but my in-laws don't know. They are the kind of people who speak without thinking and I don't want them to say something offensive to me. My husband is skinny, yet they call them fat. I'm a nurse, so I went ahead and told my co-workers because I think it would have come out in the long run. Plus, I'm going to need their support when it comes to the large amounts of food that is brought to the office I work at. Other than that, majority of my friends do not know. Only the ones that came here to help me post-op. Long distant friends I haven't told. I'm personally tired of hearing about how much I should be doing without having surgery such as eating right and in proportion, exercising, etc. Well no kidding, but apparently I am not doing something right! Anyway... that is why I love this board as well because I can speak openly about my surgery and not only get my own support but offer my personal experience to others.
  16. Hello everyone!!! I am a newbie to the board. I was banded on June 19th, 2006. Things are going great so far. I am so happy to be off of the liquid diet (which I was on for approximately 1 month). I am currently on a soft diet since this past Friday. Any helpful words advice from anyone would be deeply appreciated. I look forward to getting to know more of you

    Newbie to the boards

Paula... Yes I had 12 days of low glycemic liquids prior to surgery to shrink my liver and then I had another 2 weeks of clear and then full liquids post op. I can't express in words the way I felt to actually chew foods. It is heaven!!! Other than my water consumption, I am not taking in much of the other liquids that I have been drinking. I need a break from them I think. Thanks to everyone for the welcomes. I am loving being here so far

    Walking / Jogging

I think I have to focus on the cardio part of the exercise because for the next month I am on a 20lb lifting restriction. I am only 2 weeks post-op. I guess I didn't realize that the lifting restriction would last more than a couple of weeks. I am doing the small toning weights, but it honestly doesn't feel as though that is doing much.

I will say that it does get better. I am officially 2 weeks post-op and it is starting to get better. I called my doctor about this pain and he said that it was the nerve endings that were cut coming back to life. Which to me makes sense. Now the funny thing for me is I can feel the port when I bend enough to put on my shoes. I wonder if I am going to always feel that.

    Walking / Jogging

Hey everyone. I love to walk but I will be honest to say that it was a slow climb to getting on a track. I walk on the treadmill on poor weather days. I am willing to walk outside if my husband goes with me, which he is usually willing to do. But I mix up my exercise. I walk 5-6 days/week first thing in the morning before I eat. I read somewhere that exercising before eating helps to burn off calories and fat that is sitting on you rather than burning off the calories from the food you ate in the day. It seems to work because I have noticed that I do lose more if I exercise in the morning vs in the evening. I also do weights 3 days/week. I just recently bought a trampoline but haven't developed the nerve to get on it yet. I love reading the exercise tips. Keep up the good work everyone.

    June 2006 Band Crew

Hey everyone, I am also a Junster. I was banded June 19, 2006 in Topeka, KS. So far things are going good but I am frequently having problems with the air that was used to do the Laproscopy. It gets in my left shoulder and causes quite a bit of pain. Usually it subsides as long as I lay on my left side for a few minutes. But laying down will soon be hard because I am about to go to work. Perhaps some of you can tell me if you get this and when I might start looking forward to it going away. Other than that I think I am doing great. I have adjusted to the new diet quite well. I do get constipation from time to time, but nothing that MOM won't take care of (that is what my doctor suggested). No problems with nausea or indigestion. I'm so happy to have found this supportive sight. It gives me a way to get answers to the questions I may have and have supportive friends that have been through this before.

    Thirtysomething's

Hey everyone!!! I am 32 years old and 2 weeks post op. I have one step son, a wonderful and supportive hubby and 2 dogs (black labs). I have been debating about getting this lap band for almost 2 years now. Finally we decided that it was time. So far I am happy that I have done this. I started at 284 lbs and I have lost 30 lbs so far. I'm a LPN but I am back in school full time to become a Nurse Practitioner. I'm very excited to see what this procedure will bring to me and I know I have the will power to take it as far as I want. I look forward to meeting more about so many of you and developing several friendships. Good luck everyone!

I'm definitely up for the challenge. I am just 2 weeks post banding and would love the challenge of getting this on the go. My weigh in this am was 254. I will mark it on my calendar to post my weigh in's once/week. I'm trying to not over do the weigh in. Let's do this everyone!!!
