Its not the bypass cheat foods are not going to make you sick. You have to have some control in the matter. Why did you have surgery if your going to continue to eat cheat foods and especially a few days post op. Now should be the time you are getting yourself ready for this journey by sticking to your diet the doctor gave you. If you cant do it now how are you going to do it later. The band will not stop you from eating anything until maybe later when you have fills. It wont stop you from eating Cereal, Cookies, chocolate, doritos YOU have to stop you from eating that. Yes you are going to be hungry but you have to suffer through to get the most of the following weeks post op

I don't think people are trying to be rude, mean or critical. They are experienced banders, many of them very successful experienced banders, and seriously when they read a post where you are still on liquids or mushies and you are eating Doritos... they are probabley going to have something to say about it. It's up to you to listen or blow them off, but if you put it out there... expect feedback. It's hard, I struggle everyday and I wish you Luck!

If you test to your band to see what you can get away with, you're going to find yourself "winning" a lot But in the end, that's not a game you want to win, right?
It sounds like once you're healed and can eat solid food again that your band may be working-- giving you a feeling of satiation after only a little food. But for a lot of us (me included) the band did never and will never stop you from eating anything.
Your job= choosing what to eat and listening to the band
Band's job= giving you a sense of "not hungry" after a relatively small amount of food
    That's it.
Good luck to you! I know it's hard to figure out with every other person, and every other doctor, saying something different.

The 1/2 cup of food thing-- that's not how most people with the band eat, as far as I can tell. It's a number that gets thrown around a lot-- but it's because that is 4oz by volume and I'd say most people eat 4 oz by weight (which is not half a cup).
So 4 oz of chicken isn't whatever you can mash up to fit into a half-cup measuring cup. It's 4 oz by weight of chicken.< /p>
I probably eat up to a cup (in volume) of food most meals and I've been losing above the expected weight per month.
Edited to add: Your doctor is going to give you a "one size fits all, most restrictive possible" program to follow. But the fact is, you're going to have to figure out what you can do that's safe but also that allows you to lose weight but live your life.
This is completely opinion-- but I think that people who have the most struggle with the band are people who have been told they shouldn't be able to eat more than 1/2 cup of food, 3x a day, and that amount should make them full. Because those are the bandsters who search for such tight restriction to force that 1/2 cup issue that they are way way too tight and develop problems like acid reflux and an inability to eat healthy solid foods.

A calorie is a calorie..is a calorie Your body doesn't know a calorie from an apple any different from a calorie from pizza. If it fits within your daily caloric needs, there is nothing wrong with pizza. Don't be so foolish. The only thing important at the end of the day is a caloric deficit and ensuring your dietary fat/carbs/protein needs are met along with exercise.

Your story has a real "creepy" familiarity to it and it's going to bug me trying to recall who the past creep in my life was!!! Thank God he's married so it will probably never go further than stupid compliments. He'll probably say like the same thing day after day now. See, I'm developing an image in my mind. I've got him pegged now: cordurouy jacket, plaid pants, stupid fake smile carrying his coffee and stopping in your cube to say "Well hello there skinny" LMBO

    Funny Stuff.
Some People here acknowledge that pizza is NOT a good choice for someone trying to lose weight. But look at all the people who went ahead and did it anyway.
    Jeez.
And people wonder why the actual success rate of the lap band is so low.

No, but I know it's up to me how much I lose, if I give up it's my fault, not my bands... I do understand exactly why people can't reach their goals. They can't get over the food addiction.

    I've had two fills.
That amount has given me great hunger satiation on smaller amounts of food. It does not "restrict" anything-- I hate that term, btw, because it doesn't really reflect what the band does for me (and I don't want it to, either). Satiation is a better term for how the band has helped me be so successful so far.

stateofzen reacted to HeatherinCA in How long did it take to get restriction?
You aren't looking for "restriction" you are looking for hunger control. To be able to go 4-5 hours without eating. The band when filled properly presses on a nerve, which prevents the hunger hormone from being released. I have 5.5ccs in my band, and after a few weeks, my hunger was gone. Yes, I can still eat plenty, obviously less than pre-band, but I have to control what goes in. But my appatite is so little it makes it really hard to over eat.
I honestly think, there is no point when you will be able to just eat less food without controlling it yourself. It's up to you to mentally figure out when you are full.

This may be harsh but nonetheless, here it is. I think it is incredibly selfish of you to come to this board and look for help and suggestions of how to do this journey the wrong way....and be so very blatant about it. You can put all the nice terms to it you want such as...being honest...but at the end of the day it is just blatant disregard for what this place is all about.
There are many people on here who stumble and none of us are perfect but the goal is to lift each other up and encourage one another to get into the battle the healthy and correct way. If you are so clearly unable and unwilling to do so I think it is unfair for you to post it here.
I realize that everyone's journey is different. Again I acknowledge that most of us will stumble and not always do things perfectly. But to just flat out say we are not going to and we are looking for a way to do things wrong and hope others will help us figure out how to do that.....is really selfish and destructive to the most basic purpose of this place.
I really do hope something changes for you and you can muster up what it takes to do this correctly. You can do the right thing wrong...and it is still wrong in the end. We should all strive to do the right thing right.....and help others to do the same along the way.

I was reading a post from a fellow bandster who is having trouble with a "friend" who is jealous and lashing out about her weight loss. Of course, we all know the phrase people like to use when they are passing judgment:
You're taking the easy way out!
Well, let's put aside for the moment that being banded is hardly easy, nor does weight magically fall off. I would argue that it is, in fact, EASIER (or why else have your body cut open and a foreign object placed inside?).
Here's my question: So what? So what if it's easier? So what if it's easy? Why the heck is that bad? The band is a piece of technology that makes work easier (or, even makes it possible, period) than it was before. We, as humans, have invented millions upon millions of pieces of technology to make our lives and our work easier. It's what we do.
Driving a car or even riding a bike with gears is taking "the easy way out" when you have two legs and can walk. Yet I don't hear too many people willing to give up their gas guzzling, environment and natural resource draining cars so they can "do things the right way".
Look, people who have this attitude are not hard to read, they have a simple motivation that isn't at all about you and completely about them: They want to judge you for being fat (which equates to lazy), and feel superior for not being fat (or feel comfortable because they are also fat and you make that ok by your very presence).
It isn't about YOU. It isn't about your health, or your well-being, or your self-confidence. It's about how your changing size affects the individual and either their need to feel comfortable or their need to feel better than you as they sit in judgment. if it were about health, as people always claim when they stand loud and proud in their open prejudice against "disgusting" fat people, then they'd all be more than happy to have everyone banded, losing, and healthier by any means. Don't let them fool you that this is concern about you and your health. It isn't. It is about THEM.
So here's my answer. So what if I'm taking the "easy way out"? It's a way out, period. So bring on the easy.

Good for you for making the right decision. I know some people advocate that you can't do without the little 'guilty pleasures' and that may be true for some...but isn't that what got us into this mess? We obviously couldn't control those 'guilty pleasures' before...why do we think it's any different now? The band sure isn't going to help since it just loves slider foods.
So, before I get flamed, if you can handle them and keep them to an infrequent treat...more power to you. If you find you can't, however, you might have to deal with the fact that, like an alcoholic, there's no such thing as one.

stateofzen got a reaction from animatedfluff in What is your goal weight?
I have had 3 weight-related goals since surgery.
First, I said that getting under 200 would mean I was significantly healthier and at lower risk for weight-related health conditions than I was at 293, so if my loss stopped there I wouldn't be thrilled but I'd be satisfied (not to mention, that would put me at over 60% of excess weight lost, which is the stated goal of my surgeon).
Second, I said that I'd like to weigh less than my husband, for vanity's sake. That means weighing 170-175.
Third, I set the goal of 150 which would put me (barely) in the "healthy" BMI range for my height.
When I started this, I have to admit that 150 seemed like a pipe dream-- an aspirational goal that would be psychologically unhealthy for me to get really attached to because I wasn't ever going to really be able to get there.
Today is my six month bandiversary and I have already achieved goal 1: I weighed in at 194 this morning, which puts me 99 lbs down from my high and in so much better physical condition than I used to be, even though I am still obese. I am also clearly not done losing. I'm now thinking that 150 might be doable after all, though we'll have to see.
My next goal is on my ticker-- it is being in the overweight BMI category instead of obese and it roughly coincides with my "less than my husband" goal.
Sometimes this journey has been unbelievable-- case in point-- I am now in a size 12 in pants. I can't imagine wearing lower than a size 12, yet it will be inevitable if I really do reach my goals. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that. Even when I was an athlete in college I was wearing a size 12.

I said "in my opinion"...and in my opinion, being fat is better than slicing and dicing my insides. If someone else believes differently, then that is their right. Just as it is my right to have my opinion. In my opinion, there are worse things than being fat...and that includes the potential for a lower quality of life...which *many* bypass patients have as a result of the problems related to malabsorption. Someone else may not feel that way. *I* do.
Since it is my 'opinion'...is is neither ignorant, nor incorrect.
Back you go on my ignore list.

That comment is both remarkably ignorant and incorrect. And, one of the more irresponsible things I have read on this forum in a while.
Maybe you would like to tell that to the tens of thousands of patients over the last HALF-CENTURY for whom the Bypass has been the key to a new and healthy life.
This forum is one of the places people come to try and make informed decisions about which, if any, Weight Loss Surgery they will have performed. It's fine for you to comment on the Lap band; you have one. You do NOT have a Bypass, and from what I have gathered from your posts, you know very little about it, in SPITE of your claims to the contrary.
The Band, the Bypass, and the Sleeve (and several other procedures) are ALL very viable options for prospective WLS patients. The Bypass has been the gold Standard in WLS for many years, and will continue to be for the forseeable future.
It is ridiculous and uninformed comments likes yours that have the potential to dissuade potential patients from even considering a sugery that could very well change their lives.
