  3. False Alarm! I just read the instructions in my binder and they say the day before surgery I can have broth and Protein drinks so I'm good. *whew*!!!
  4. I actually just realized that I made a mistake. I don't know how big of a mistake it was but I had 2 Protein shakes today and I just went over the instructions and realize I was supposed to have only Clear liquids. Do you think that's going to be a problem? Now I'm more nervous than before! I did a liquid diet for all of the last 2 weeks and forgot to make it clear liquids. I think my liver is still smaller than it would be. Is it something I should worry about?

    I'll give up carbonated drinks and for an Irishman to give up beer is HUGE, but I will not give up caffeine! They will pry my coffee from my cold dead hand! Actually, it's either coffee or 5 hour energy.

    Back to work

    I do IT work which isn't very physically demanding but very stressful and difficult. I sometimes have to walk around the hospital but I'm supposed to walk anyway. I am going back to work in a week no matter what. Actually I'm going to have surgery on Monday and starting Wednesday, I'll work from home. If I can get up and walk around, I can get on a computer and do some work. I know this is brave talk for someone pre-op, but I'm hoping for the best.
  13. I have the same problem with some of my friends and family. They told me to man up and just exercise and stop taking the "easy way out". I want to ask them, "Which part of removing 75% of my stomach do you think is easy? The pain? The discomfort? The stress of changing of every aspect of my life? The having to watch every single thing that I put into my mouth? The risk of Vitamin deficiency? The giving up of all of the foods I love? The feeling like an outsider when everyone around me is having fun eating and drinking? The having to relearn my body and how to eat? I've done very diet known to man, and taken every pill. I've done exercise, and lost 50 or more pounds multiple times only to gain 60 or more back. I'm tired of the roller coaster and I want it to end once and for all. I have emotional support from a few close friends and family, but most of my support comes from this website. So hang in there man. I'm here if you want to talk. My advice for the difficult family members is to avoid them temporarily until you are done with the process and are losing weight. They can't argue with results.
  14. I am looking forward to the day I can get off my blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol drugs. My surgery is in 2 days. I'll be careful with my meds when I get out and visit my doctor if anything seems strange.
  15. I can't lie. I'm having doubts. I am down over 20 pounds in 2 weeks. Could I do this on my own without surgery? I always thought it would be nearly impossible for me to lose 130 pounds on my own. Most of my weight is in my belly. Someone yesterday told me I should walk around the block because I just have a little "love around my waist". I've already committed to doing it. I want something that is going to last.
  16. Two more days until my surgery and I'm starting to get nervous. I will do another rebuilding Paul! video today or tomorrow and get it posted before the surgery. I slipped up last night. I haven't eaten food in so long and I didn't time my protein shakes right so I was STARVING, so I ate a small piece of cheese. I immediately regretted it because it made my stomach hurt like crazy. It's all liquids from here on.
  17. They didn't tell me to take the liquid meds before surgery. Those are for after the surgery. Prior to surgery I will take 1 pill with only enough Water as it takes to swallow it. Then they do the surgery 2 hours later. After the surgery they put a patch behind my ear to prevent nausea and have the liquid medicines in case I am still nauseous. They gave me the prescriptions prior to my surgery so I could have them all filled before surgery and I would have the pill I need to take before surgery and they STRESSED I can only have a tiny sip of water.
  18. Quick correction: I initially weighed in at the hospital where I work and did my 2nd weigh in at home. It seems like my home scale is much kinder. I just weighed in on the samr scale I weighed in on the first time so I have only lost 12 pounds in 10 days, not 18. I knew it was too good to be true.
  19. I'm down a little over 15 pounds in 10 days. It makes me question whether I should just stick to the liquid diet until I lose all the weight, but I know as soon as I started eating again, it would all come back plus some. Today was the first time I've ever tested my blood sugar and gotten under 200! It's still high at 178, but it's lower than I've ever seen it since I've been testing in the last 2 years. Yesterday was a lot easier for me in terms of making it through the liquid diet without feeling starving. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I was SUPER busy at work and didn't have time to think about it. I love my wife so much for cooking fresh chicken stock for me and I really like having a hot cup of green tea before bed. Last night I felt like I had enough energy to go to the gym and exercise, but I got home at 7:30, had to do homework with my daughter and feed her, and work from 9 to midnight remotely doing IT maintenance stuff so there was no time. No work tonight so I'll see how I feel. My surgery is only 4 days away and the closer it gets the more real it feels. Unlike many of the people here who planned and worked for it for a six months to a year, from start to finish for me it's 2 months so I've had less time for it to sink in. In the area of TMI.... I had to poo last night for the first time in about 4-5 days and it felt like I was passing rocks followed by Water but I felt a lot better afterwards.
  20. My Pre-Op diet had a bit of a rocky start. It was supposed to start on Labor Day and my wife convinced me that one day wouldn't make a difference and to be fair, it didn't take much convincing on her part. So I started on Tuesday, but I messed up again. As they say, if you fail to plan you plan to fail. I had some Protein shakes that a body builder friend of mine gave me so I figured, "Hey, why waste money when you can use what you've got?" and I used them, but in the middle of the day I noticed they were 300 calories vs the 160 calories in the Protein shake my nutritionist suggested. They had a lot more protein but after speaking to my nutritionist, I decided to go to costco and pick up a few things after work including the RTD (Ready To Drink) shakes they sell, specifically the Premier Protein brand which come out to only $1.39 each. They have chocolate, strawberry and vanilla and at 160 calories they have 30g of protein. These weren't on the list my nutritionist gave me, but I provided her with the nutritional facts and she approved of them. After work yesterday I went to Costco to get the shakes, but I also wanted to get those Tyson pre-cooked frozen chicken breasts so I can quickly and conveniently toss one in the microwave for my meals. I was disappointed to find that my Costco no longer carries them. I filled out a suggestion card and went to Smart & Final and they didn't have them either, but they did have pre-cooked frozen chicken breasts cut into strips which is close enough. I prefer the breast to be whole so it doesn't dry out as much, but I'll take what I can get. I also picked up some baby spinach and when I finally got home, I heated up some of the chicken and sauteed the spinach in a teaspoon of coconut oil and minced garlic and it was great. I prefer olive oil, but I'm trying to be good and there was no coconut taste. Yesterday I felt like I was starving all day and today I'm doing much better, but I'm still hungry. I'm due for my 2nd shake about now. I try to wait as long as I can before I drink them so they will last me until dinner. Hopefully I can stick to the plan the rest of the way and my early slip ups won't make that much of a difference. I have a feeling I'll lose closer to 20 pounds than the 10 my nutritionist was hoping for. How are all of you doing on your pre-op diets? What cool tricks have you learned? What tips or suggestions can you offer to make sticking to the plan easier? What experiences or challenges have you run into? How did you overcome them? I can't wait to learn more from you all.
  21. Thank you so much. This is a very helpful post. I love all of the information. My hospital is giving me some sort of compression hose for my legs which are supposed to prevent blood clots. I've heard of other compression stuff to hold your belly together, but when I mentioned it to my RN, she said that's not good and stop believing what I read online.

  23. Mine said the liver acquires fat and gets larger and harder and they can't lift it to work under it. The liquid diet shrinks the liver so they have easier access to work.
  24. I am excited. I started my pre-op prep diet. Week 1 is 2 Protein shakes and 1 meal per day and week 2 is all Protein Shakes. I am not using the brand they suggested because I already had some at home. The brand they suggested is 160 calories with 25g of protein and the ones I have are 300 calories and 40g of protein. I only have a week of these and will likely switch to the Premier Protein RTD (Ready To Drink) pre-made shakes at costco which are 160 calories and 30g of protein. I'm sure I'll lose about 10 pounds before surgery in less than 2 weeks!!! I think this may be tough. Any advice would be helpful. I think it's ok for me to have tea and Water between shakes, so that should keep me feeling full. Believe it or not I hadn't weighed in until today. My official starting weight is 303 pounds. I took photos of myself facing forward and a profile photo and a picture of the reading on the scale.
