BLAKQUEEN got a reaction from Goldenleaf79 in Hiatal hernia surgery before Gastric Bypass?
Good morning, I had my gastric bypass on March 7th, I had a hiatal hernia also. My surgeon did both in same operation. My hernia was also big it was the second time I had a hernia repair with WLS. First time was in 2009 when I had a gastric band it was also done in same surgery. Ask your surgeon why he wants to do it in two surgeries. Good luck

Hi, I am 5 wks RNY post op. Let me start by saying I started this journey in 2009 getting a gastric band. My start weight was 275lbs, I’m 5’3. In 2014 I had a revision to a gastric sleeve because of esophageal distress. I had a hard time getting below 200LBS with both of this procedures. Once I was below 200 I hovered over 185-195. In 2019 I lost more weight and was down to 157lbs. My original goal weight was 175, hoping for 150lbs. In the fall on 2018 I stopped working due to heath issues and I didn’t apply for disability until the spring of 2019. As a result of this dramatic change I became depressed and shut in. Then the pandemic happened , I became more depressed, my weight just went through the roof. Although I still didn’t eat a lot I ate unhealthy. Durning this time you could get anything delivered to your door, I got up to 235lbs. I also began to have severe reflux. I went to see a GI doctor who ran tests and found that my reflux was very severe and my hiatal hernia was back and bigger. I had it fixed with the band surgery in 2009. Gi recommendation was to have a revision to a RNY. I had to go through the process all over again, nutrition, psychology and pre op diet. On March 7th 2023 I had my revision surgery. The surgery went well , it was a little longer due to difficulty repairing my hiatal hernia. Post op I had urine retention, I had to go home with a Foley catheter. That lasted for 3 weeks. So my last start weight was 235lbs, SW 219; now 207lbs. I am not losing any more weight for about two weeks. I am in the mushy/soft stage. I had a hard time at first getting enough fluids in and getting my Protein goals. Protein was a challenge during the next stages because I couldn’t eat or drink a lot. The last week or so I had some foods not go down well, had some vomiting. Also had a problem with either dehydration or hypoglycemia in the morning if I don’t eat or drink something early; can’t wait to 10 or 11am which I am used to. Not a great feeling. Either I am not eating enough protein/food or I need to add exercise to my journey, I did join a gym. I know my weight loss will be slower than most people due to revision but I think I am in that can’t get below 200 funk. I still want to be healthy at 170lbs. The journey continues!!

I have ate primarily vegan for three years. I do eat fish/shellfish sometimes. I don't eat dairy or any other animal products except fish/shellfish.
I am on the pre-op diet of salad, Protein and I alternate with Protein Shakes. It is boring and I am hungry
I am concerned about the liquid diet after and puree and soft food phase. I am concerned about getting nutrition. Iron, protein.. I bought a Multivitamin.
Any vegan food ideas for those phases.

BLAKQUEEN reacted to Smanky in The Plant-Based Bariatric: Can It Be Done?
Hi, certified vegan bypasser here! 🤓 It's totally doable, and I've had no issues at all hitting my Protein goals both with and without vegan protein Water. The protein water has been a big help, but honestly, even if I wasn't vegan I'd still be using the protein water as there are days when I just want to eat vegetables and don't want to deal with heavy seitans.
Speaking of, seitan (wheat meat/faux meats) are the best source of high protein I've found. The best ones can be sourced from good Chinese grocers in the freezer section. If you have a Trader Joes or Wholefoods near you, I expect they'd have a great vegan section. Some examples of the protein counts in the seitans I have access to:
Chinese supermarket Not Pork 100g serve = 165 cal, 21g protein
Chinese supermarket Not Duck 100g serve = 150 cal, 19g protein
    Princess G brand "Crispy G" 100g serve = 266 cal, 17g protein
Sayur Not Pork 100g serve = 155 cal, 21g protein

Lamyong is another great faux meat brand. But if you can't source good faux meats, good old tofu comes through:

    Firm Tofu (½ cup/126g) = 181 cal, 21.8g protein

Marinate that tofu in something delicious, and fry it up with some asian greens!

Some mung bean pastas are high in protein. Not the nicest wheat Pasta substitute, but with a nice tangy Tomato sauce and a little vegan Parmesan, it's acceptable. Also check the nutritional info on the back of Gardein products, I think they're pretty easy to find.

Soy milk has about 8g of protein per serve, so that's another way of slipping some extra protein in, especially if you can tolerate Protein Shakes. Protein fortified soy milk (10g per serve) in a plant based Protein Shake gives me a whopping 40g of protein in one go, so again, on days when I'm just craving vegetables, I can do a shake for Breakfast and a protein water or two throughout the day and easily hit my goals.

Some vegetables are also higher in protein, like edamame, but I honestly just stick with protein water and seitans, as that's what I enjoy.

    Hope that helps!

Puréed sweet Potato’s, mashed potatoes and gravy, Campbells Tomato Soup, refried Beans smooth with a little nacho liquid sauce. Puréed Campbells cream of mushroom Soup looks and tastes normal. Add Protein to get your levels you need!! Heck of a lot easier than bland liquid month!!

BLAKQUEEN reacted to catwoman7 in For those of you who have gotten the sleeve do you wish you had gotten the bypass?
I went with bypass for the exact same reasons you're thinking of. I had GERD prior to surgery, and I didn't want to take the risk of it getting worse (sleeve doesn't ALWAYS make it worse, and for some people, it actually gets better, but the risk of it getting worse was too high for my comfort, so I went with bypass). Also, I had my surgery almost eight years ago, and at that point, standalone sleeve surgery was still kind of a new thing, and I was afraid it might turn out to be "Lapband 2". It's been around long enough at this point that I wouldn't have that particular fear anymore, but if I had to decide today, i'd still go with bypass because of my previous GERD issues.
your surgeon may recommend bypass anyway since you have GERD. Bypass usually improves if not outright cures GERD. My surgeon said he'd do either one, but he wanted me to at least strongly consider bypass because of the GERD issue. It didn't take much to convince me to go in that direction.
I've been very happy with my bypass and am glad I decided to go with it.

BLAKQUEEN reacted to PNWGAL in For those of you who have gotten the sleeve do you wish you had gotten the bypass?
If you have a history of acid reflux, the surgeon may not let you choose which surgery to do, they will recommend the bypass. I had the bypass about 5 months ago and it has almost cured my acid reflux. I was taking omeprozole daily and am now on Pepcid and almost feel like I can stop taking that now. Good luck!

BLAKQUEEN reacted to SleeveToBypass2023 in For those of you who have gotten the sleeve do you wish you had gotten the bypass?
I absolutely love my sleeve. BUT, I have to have a revision to bypass because it caused me MAJOR gerd issues. I didn't have any kind of gerd or reflux pre surgery, so I chose the sleeve. But it's caused horrible gerd, which made me need very high dose of PPI long term and gave me gastritis and esophagitis. The PPI caused pre cancerous polyps all through my stomach (3 different kinds, all different sizes) that require multiple procedures to remove them. Once that's done and I'm cleared, I have to have a revision to the bypass. If it wasn't for this, I would be ecstatic with my sleeve. I lost 110 pounds in 9 months. I went from a size 10 ring to a size 7. I went from a size 28/30 in clothes to 18/20. I got off my blood pressure medication and all 3 diabetes meds. I'm able to go BEAST MODE in my work outs. I wish I didn't have to get the bypass, but here we are. So just do your research because even if you don't have any gerd issues at all, the sleeve can cause it and you may end up with a revision to the bypass anyway.

I also am waiting for a decision. I first had a lap band, which damaged my esophagus a little and I also had a hiatal hernia repaired then. I had a revision to a sleeve in 2014 because of my problems with the band. Now I have severe Gerd, just crazy bad. I had reflux before my first surgery due to my hernia. My hiatal hernia has returned and I also have an abdominal hernia. So now I need a bypass for the Gerd although during Covid I gained over 50 lbs. in 2019 I was at 157lbs now I am at 230.

    good luck

Hey unbroken 40, some doctors wait so that your stomach can heal. My doctor did it all in one surgery , but he did have issues with getting my stomach to cooperate. My surgeon was to also remove my gallbladder, but opted not to after the issue with stomach. I was glad that he was able to do it all in one surgery. Talk with your surgeon and others.

BLAKQUEEN reacted to ReaderGirl in Banded in 2001. Questions about converting to Sleeve. Scared.
    HI VDLT,
Just a summary, I was banded in Sept. of 2003. Have had my band for 12 years. I am 5'3, I get you on the short thing! Would do anything to be 3 inches taller! anyway, I just read your post and I totally get you. I was 241 when I had my lapband, I did at one point make it to 185 after going thru a very bad divorce, which will make anyone loose weight and then put more weight on. I have been filled and unfilled so many times it was unreal. I felt like just give it to me I can do my own fill, that's how many I had. I never got the "sweet spot" I just threw up everything thing that went in my mouth, good , bad or ugly for the last 10 years. 2 years ago I went to my doctor(actually a new doctor, my doctor had moved away and referred us to a nearby doctor, which now I see was a good thing.)anyway I had him take all my Fluid out. I was having a surgery and wanted to be able to swallow pills and eat. The new doctor said you just need this out , it doesnt work you need the sleeve. I went home and said nope I can deal with this. so I did that. at that point I was up to 225, after 2 years of unfill I gained 5 pounds up to 230.i was throwing up less, still unable to eat beef pork or white meat chicken. and still getting sick about once a week, well that was better than I was used to. so I dealt with it.
I was actually thinking I can do this without surgery, I tried for 6 months, doctor approved diet etc etc. well 6 months later I weigh 231. I said that's it. I went back to the surgeon's office in April of this year and said. I want this. I am ready. and he had no problem at all. after the scope he found, I had a hitatial hernia, he can't prove but pretty sure it is from the band. I had gastritis, I also had the infection called h pylori. my throat and stomach was bright red, it was not pretty.so I went thru everything he wanted, test , talked with the NUT's and all the test. I did the 2 week pre op diet. I had surgery on July 1st .... 9 days ago. he removed the band, fixed the hernia and did the sleeve. all at one time.
he said I had some scar tissue but it wasn't bad , and was glad I got the band out. He is very sure that I will do great , his office and staff are a great support system and are very encouraging and want you to come back and if you have problems they are there.
I also was cash paying! my insurance paid a little bit for the hernia to be repaired. but honestly I paid 14,362.00 for my surgery. and that is ok. I am worth it. My health is worth it. save the money, take a loan do what you have to do. you will not regret it.
the first 2 days were hard, and I got nervous, but I did what they told me and now I am 9 days out. and I am actually at work right now on my lunch break. today was my first day back to a desk job. but you can do it. and should do it.
I do not regret this! and you will not either.
my best friend and I were banded together me in 2003 and her in 2004.
she did her sleeve July 2014 (all one surgery too, she used a different doctor than me. she actually used DR Garth from my 600# life the tv show) and I did mine this July 2015. and we both do not regret it at all.
there is no reason to live like that with the band. I am not sure where you are located, I am near Houston Texas and we have great doctors here. I have seen people talk about doctors not doing this at one time. unless you have a lot of other problems I don't get it. it was easy and things went smoothly.
Find a doctor you like, and do it. you won't regret it. The band worked for some but not for everyone, I recently read some where on this board a link to a medical report that said the band had a 80% failure rate. its not you its the band, get something that works. and talk with a good doctor, and get your health back!
hope this helps at least a little bit!!!!
