Pines got a reaction from GrannyMaggie in What was your “Moment” ?
I have been large all my life, but always felt healthy and mostly able to do what I wanted. I gained about 40 pounds during Covid and after struggling to get it off and no longer feeling healthy, my doctor recommended seeing an endocrinologist who recommended WLS. I was not interested, at all, so decided to try Ozempic. I was on it for a year, lost my Covid weight and a bit more, and was really surprised how it changed my cravings and interest in food. After my health insurance stopped covering Ozempic, I started researching other options and realized that WLS would give me some of the same effects I appreciated from the medication. I am on a long journey though because my health insurance requires six months of nutrition counseling and that ends in a work window when I can't take time off, so I'm hoping for a March 2024 surgery date. It's giving me plenty of time to plan, research and prepare! 🙂

Its been a little more than 9 months since I had gastric sleeve surgery and not a day goes by that I am pleased that I made this decision. I'm down 141lbs and feel great. To anyone thinking about if it's worth it, absolutely yes for me! I've got about 40 more lbs to go but I know I'll get there. I'm greatful that I have great support from my bariatric team, family, friends and my exercise girls at the gym... you all make this easier for me.

I stopped at the Dollar Tree tonight after work and happened upon a couple of items I added to my surgery prep box. I found little packets of Peanut Butter powder, pouches of salmon, and a kitchen strainer. They also had some Protein Shakes and electrolyte Water but I don’t know enough about either to buy any. I hadn’t really thought about that store as a resource for stuff I might need/want related to the surgery so I’ll definitely check back. And at $1.25, I’m not out much if I don’t like or need it.

Oh, I have met with my dietician. She recommended a cookbook that has some full liquid recipes, a couple of which include powdered Peanut Butter, so I was excited to find that at the DT - I know it’s expensive. My dietician was also excited to know I really like fish because she said that’s usually well tolerated, so I stocked up on salmon packets. I didn’t read the labels for the Water or the Protein Shake because I don’t like sweet drinks NOW so don’t anticipate drinking them after either, but noted them there.

Dollar Tree finds are so fun! I wish I liked salmon, mini packets would be handy for snacks! It may not be the best place for electrolyte waters though as stated above, check and see if they have sugar in them. I have some that don't but they were pretty pricey and not from the dollar store. Who knows though, you never know what brand you are going to find at Dollar Tree, sometimes you luck out!

As for Protein, it is the same thing, check the sugar, cheaper formulas often use sugar to sweeten and that will ruin your low carb efforts. Also check the protein source. If I recall correctly bariatric patients tend to do best on whey protein isolate or whey hydrolysate because they are gentler on the stomach and absorb better. Plus they should be lactose free, lactose intolerance is common after surgery as your stomach heals...

I am finally considering weight loss surgery. I just had a wonderful small ice cream cone out on my deck on a perfect summer evening. It was really delicious and I wondered if I’d be able to have such a treat after surgery. Without any judgement regarding equating food with happiness etc, can any experienced bariatric patients tell me if I’ll be able to enjoy a small cone post surgery? It’s probably not a deal-breaker, just trying to wrap my head around expectations.
