How much you lose during your first month depends on numerous factors including age, starting weight, comorbidities, how strictly you follow dieting guidelines, exercise, etc. I was well over 300 pounds starting out and lost 23 pounds my first month. Everyone's results differ and comparing your own progress to someone else can drive you nuts (from personal experience). Every pound you lose adds up over time and focusing on yourself and your own weight loss is far better for your mental health (trust me, I drove myself crazy comparing my weight loss to others. I was a chronic staller and my weight loss slowed significantly after the first 3 months. Which is normal, but the fact that I started losing in single digits when I still had so much weight to lose drove me nuts). A common problem is that people (myself included) seem to think the weight will just fall off because of series like 'My 600 pound Life' in which those people have MUCH more weight to lose and thus their numbers are much higher. My advice is to try and stay realistic with your weight loss goals and try not to stress if it takes longer to lose what you want to. Like I said, every pound adds up over time and I met my goal in 18 months so I'm sure if you follow your plan that you'll be able to reach your goal too.

    Hi everyone
I had a roux-en-y gastric bypass with fobi pouch 5 years ago (well, 5 years and 11 days to be precise). In the year or two after surgery I was a regular poster here and got immense support from people going through the process at the same time as me, as well as from those who were living with the changes, so I though I’d come back and share for a bit.
I have the same story as many of you I am sure - a lifetime of weight loss, weight gain. I had a bit of a distaste for serious exercise but I’d walk happily. I know I ate (well, still do a bit) to deal with feelings - especially loneliness. Stressful jobs over the years, I am 5 foot 7in tall and my weight seesawed until at 100kg (220 lbs) i got a gastric band. That was good, helped me loose maybe 25lbs, but eventually the refill port broke and it had some other issues where it broke, so I made the decision to get a bypass. Because I was back up to 120kg (165lbs)
’My’ bypass has a fobi pouch - so instead of having a small rounded stomach, I have a longer thinner one with a permanent band (made from a baby’s catheter with permanent suture through to make a tied-off loop) in place around it, so it will never stretch.
Anyway, it has been a resounding success. I initially dropped to under 60kg (130lbs). I remember worrying ‘how do I make this STOP! Then settled at about 62-64kg. My partner was concerned I looked a bit skeletal, and I run (sometimes) and cycle (a lot) now, so encouraged me to consider putting on a bit of weight for my own health, and I did and feel better for it - so now I sit happily at about 66-67kg - just under 150lbs.
There were times when it was tough work. There still are - I occasionally still get sick with that horrid ‘dumping’ if I make an unwise choice, but the benefits outweigh that so much!
I want to thank users of this board - the best bit was each problem I encountered, I found someone else had encountered it and overcome it. And it helped me hang in, see it through.

I think when the time gets closer I will be nervous, but right now I am just so miserable living in my body that I am counting the hours.

If you have a food processor and you cook your meat until it flakes you don’t have to “purée” it.

My favorite is chicken, refried Beans, salsa, and white Mexican cheese. Then put it all in the food processor again and magic!

I do the same thing with my pad Thai chicken. I have a gluten allergy so I already had to use rice everything. I make my pad Thai without the noodles and put it all in the food processor and it is heaven! And I don’t feel like I am missing meals with my family!

Try FitLife fat-free milk. It's ultra-pasturized and lactose free--plus it tastes good. It also froths like a dream.

I also encourage you to buy a few bariatric cookbooks. There are many on Amazon. They give ideas for all stages post-surgery.

I skipped it. The thought of puree made me gag. I made foods like Indian Dhal, [ without the whole spices] celery and stilton cheese Soup and butternut squash and lentil soup. I blitzed them with a stick blender and managed them fine. I also ate cream cheese, crushed boiled egg and mayo.
I had and still have taste issues. Hummus still is a no no for me

Oh yea, I am a texture person too so I completely understand. I was also worried about the pureed stage but it proved much easier than expected.
I made egg salad and pureed it and it was good. Really just like the filling of a deviled egg.
I tried chicken salad, but the texture was a smidge off but I ate it and just didn't make it again.
My GO-TO's were ground turkey with taco seasoning (basically taco meat) pureed. Refried Beans, chili pureed was good too. Pureed Soups are good too because it doesn't really change the texture but makes them a little thicker. I had broccoli cheese Soup and Tomato Soup a few times.
At this stage I barely at anything, so I might have had 1 or 2, 2oz. servings a day then got in my Protein from shakes.

I didn't puree any meats. I had a lot of hummus, fat free refried Beans, Greek yogurt, pureed cottage cheese - I forget what else. The thought of pureed meat kinda grossed me out.

Oh wow, I feel your pain! My parents came to visit me, after I had lost 200 pounds, and my mom saw me mixing the essential amino acid supplement that I take daily (as recommended by my PCP). She looked at the label and said, “You know that has CALORIES?!”
Five. It has five calories in a scoop. And thanks, mom, I lost 200 pounds without your help but I still need you to micromanage my calories.
I guess some moms just can’t help themselves. Most of the time — and I think this is true in your case and mine — they have good intentions but no idea how harmful they can be. My mom put me on the path of yo-yo dieting from my pre-teen years. I’m sure she just wanted me to be healthy and never anticipated that the yo-yo dieting would contribute to long-term weight gain. So I feel free to ignore her comments.

My surgery is on January 10th. I have always had texture issues. It took me years to be able to eat things like oatmeal and tapioca. I can't drink almond, oat or soy milk. The thought of pureed meats gives me an actual physical reaction. How do I get through this short period of time and get enough Protein?

I have been trying to lose weight, quite literally, my entire life. My earliest memories are of being uncomfortable, knowing I was in a bigger body than I "should" have been. I tried and failed at every diet, and consulted with 3 other surgeons over the course of a decade before I finally committed and had surgery. I went to therapy, read the books, stuck to the plan, fell off the plan. got back on, cried, rejoiced, and everything in between. And today, I hit my "goal" weight. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't elated to see that long desired number. It was overwhelming and thrilling. But truly, even more than any number, is the life I've gained, the love for myself that I've learned to cultivate, the life changing decision to care for myself well and no longer allow myself to be at war with this one precious body I have.
As so many WLS patients say, I just wish I had done it sooner.
I'm rooting for each and everyone of you as well. 💓

Happy that you made the choice to have WLS. I'm going to give you a different way of looking at this. LOTS of people (meeee) have body dysmorphia. Crazy but when i was 232lbs (5'2") and i looked in the mirror.... I didn't see 232lbs. I saw what was in my head. In fact I decided to have WLS (lapband) when I saw a picture and didn't know it was me.... the feeling was awful.......... fast forward...... 143lbs (lapband) and all I saw in the mirror was the fat girl............ fast forward....... 2+ years after lapband removed 173lbs I didn't see how terrible I looked again............ Sleeved at 173lbs and now i'm at 125-129 and I still don't see the person everyone else sees in the mirror...... I got down to 120 and i got a lot of "your soooo skinny". It's crazy how the mind plays trick on us...... and yes i'm in therapy.
So she probably doesn't see what you saw.
