I can drink no problems but I have to pace myself. With food I am full after 2 to 3 bites. I chew thoroughly as instructed. I had one egg this morning and couldn't finish it. It was a standard 60 gram egg about 2 ounces. I take about 30 minutes to eat following the: small teaspoon / chew thoroughly / wait 30 seconds and repeat / I stop as soon as I burp or hiccup. It could be restriction. Thank you

Sounds like restriction, and your stomach could still be a little swollen. What if you try eating small amounts but more often? I find that if I eat a small amount I get hungry again in a few hours. Maybe that will help you get in all your Protein and calories? How do you do with your Vitamins? Can you get them down?

    Hello Everyone,

I had my VSG on the 22nd of April. I am in stage 3 of the diet. I am 23 days post op. I didn't have a pre-op diet. I am not able to eat much. No where near what I was told to eat. With the 30/30, the protien shakes and Water requiments I am struggling to eat. Anyone else experiencing this? How are you getting through it?

Hi- I was sleeves 4/19 and I don’t have issues eating or drinking. Do you have restrictions when trying to eat or drink most things? Getting full too quickly or sick? What happens when you have a Protein Shake?

I was the same way at every stage I could eat more than expected. I just had to measure my food and eat how much I was supposed to but the process still worked.

That’s good to hear! I’m down 20lbs since my week visit to my dr I haven’t weighed myself since but I can tell I have lost weight so that’s good. But like you said I will just have to be extra careful measuring food portions.

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but is anyone else experiencing bloating after surgery. I mean, I'm nearly a month out and every morning I wake up bloated; it will dissipate after exercise and come back right before bed 😞 It is driving me crazy! Is this normal? What can I do!!!

I did NOT experience this with the sleeve. 😩

Out of curiosity, are you consuming a lot of sugar free items? I find that for some reason when I do I cannot get rid of bloat.

So the gas pain has gone away from everywhere except my left side. It's concentrated from under my left breast to my ribs, shoulder, and neck. I walk, I took gas x, nothing is helping. Anyone have any other advise? It's excruciating and makes it very painful to take deep breaths or even get comfortable.

Have you tried a heating pad on the area? That helped break up some residual stubborn gas for me.

Well, I made it!!!! So I had my surgery yesterday the 3rd. It went well, but the gas pain was NO JOKE. It was really really bad yesterday. But I did walking a lot and today it's not nearly as bad. Passed gas a few times and it helped. I had a drain in one of my incisions, and it pulled on that one and the one next to it. They removed it before I went home this afternoon (about 3pm) but that's where the majority of my pain is. Well there, and for some reason my neck, shoulder, and chest muscles really hurt. Like...why? I can also attest that you definitely DO NOT want to drink anything cold. Warm, warm, warm is the way to go. Do I really need to tell you how I know? lol I was sent home with a blood thinner (Lovonox), Oxycontin, and Phenergan (anti nausea). And I have been so so so tired. I fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Anyway, that's my update. I'm tired so I'm going to take my 989462510th nap of the day.

Congrats on a successful survey! Now listen to your body and rest!

When does it stop hurting when taking pills? I cry by the time I'm done (I take them one at a time) because it hurts. I am hoping it's because of the swelling and irritation and not a forever thing. Also, no I didn't get a binder. And my arms (the backs of them) are completely black and blue (actually, the bruises are so dark they almost look black) from the Heparin they gave me twice a day in the hospital and now with the Lovonox, I'm guessing I'm just gonna look like this for a good minute. They said I could do the shots on my stomach, but I told them no chance lol There's enough going on with my stomach already, not adding this to it. They used this clear sealant stiff on 4 of my incisions and the 5th had the drain in it so it's open but has dressing on it. Let me tell you....when they took that drain out I almost passed out. It hurt sooooo bad!!!!! The thinner clear tubing was ok, but there was a wider white part that was like 9 inches long that I thought was gonna kill me. No joke. OMG. Well, I'm heading for a walk and then probably the bathroom and bed...again lol Thank you so much for all your support. I went into this so calm and informed because of everyone on this forum. You guys ROCK!!!! Maybe I'll show pics of me pre and post op, my incisions, and my crazy looking arms lol Have a good one!!!

I’m sorry to hear that you are in such pain. I never had any issues swallowing pills or Water after surgery so I would have to think maybe you are very swollen. I took homeopathic arnica tabs that dissolved under my mouth before and after surgery (dr approved) to minimize swelling. Hang in there and just rest and it will get better.

How long after surgery until all restrictions are lifted? I'm looking at having gastric bypass but I'm a correctional officer and am not allowed to return to work with any kind of restrictions whatsoever ((lifting, etc)). I'll ask my surgeon next week, but I'm genuinely curious on what to expect. Fortunately I have the luxury of taking off whatever time I need as my husband has plenty of sick leave he can donate to me when I exhaust all of my own leave hours, but I don't know what I'll do with myself if I'm facing being at home for a month, lol.

It’s one month for my surgeons office until the lift restrictions are lifted.

Ok, so day 3 is a wrap, and I'm still struggling, although i was surprised to see I've lost 5 pounds in 3 days on this liquid diet, so that kind of helped my motivation lol I know this isn't necessarily for weight loss per se, but it's at least a nice perk. I'm really just having issues when I have to take my pills. They require food, and even when I take them with milk and/or milkshakes, my stomach still gets really upset. This worries me when the surgery is over and I can only have Clear Liquids for 2 weeks. I'm really nervous about how sick my stomach will get.

Its normal to feel this way. We have been eating/drinking a certain way for a certain number of years and now we have to stop. It’s not fun. But keep in mind this diet is important to shrink your liver for an easier surgery and recovery as well as jump starting your weight loss journey. As far as the nausea, not sure what to tell you now but after surgery the will send you home with Zofran or other anti nausea meds to help. I never experienced nausea after surgery but some do and you may. Try and keep your mind on your 5lb weight loss and use that motivation to push you through. You can do it

I feel like I can drink more than a average patient. I am 2 days post op (4/25/22) and can get almost my full 64 oz and 60-80 grams of Protein in. I do get burps after drinking but I get it regardless if I sip those 1 oz cups into 4s or just half it. Hope that makes sense. I am dealing with really bad pain on the right side of my stomach incision but I believe that’s where the DR pulled the stomach out.

I’m 8 days out but yea I’ve been the same way can drink a ton. Also can gulp it down which I thought I could never do. I have my follow up with my surgeon tomorrow I’m gonna ask him about it.

Wow congratulations I hope that I am able to go on soft foods that quickly! Thanks so much for sharing I feel so much better being able to talk to people about this! My family hasn’t been very supportive and they don’t understand why I have made this decision which makes it even harder for me. I can’t stand the comment “all you have to do is stop eating and lose the weight” every time I hear that I cry inside because they just don’t understand. Thanks for the advice I’m going to get a heating pad just in case

You’re welcome! Yea my family was against me having it also. This site is great for advice and just encouragement. Yea definitely get a heating pad. I also got an abdominal binder but I never used that. Also stock up on chewable gas x they will be your best friend!

Hello everyone my surgery date is Tuesday April 26th and I am nervous and excited. I have a 7 day pre op diet all liquids! First few days were hard now I’m just counting down the days until surgery hoping that my liver shrinks enough so there are no complications. I just recently found this site I have been looking for a support group for so long. I’m very interested to hear from those who have already had the surgery earlier this month .. any best practices or challenges to share? I have read up on everything I can and I’m getting the sleeve.. but reading and watching videos is nothing like experiencing it first hand. Congrats to all who have already gotten through the surgery I’m worried about post op but also excited if that makes any sense at all!

Congrats! I was sleeved on 4/19, had a two week liquid diet prior. The surgery itself went great, the gas pains after were no joke but walking and gas x helps a lot. I needed pain meds the first day and a half I was home I have been managing the pain with Tylenol since then. I found a heating pad helps a lot with abdominal pain. I don’t feel overly tired at all but I do feel hungry! I was able to go on soft foods today so I had 2 Protein Shakes and three 2oz meals. Also trying to get in all my liquids. Overall, very pleased.
