huskymama reacted to GradyCat in After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???
No, you don't end up throwing up for life. Definitely for the first 36 hours post-surgery due to anesthesia. Possibly once or twice throwing up the "foamies" (mucus, bile, not food) if you eat something your stomach doesn't agree with. I eat meat all the time. No problem. But I still can't eat soft tortillas. That's okay with me.

My mom is in assisted living but mentally she is great I stopped in to bring her some adult diapers the other day and I walked in her room - I had sunglasses on - she said Hi and I said Hi! She said can I help you with something? I lifted the box of diapers and showed them to her. She said Oh! Did my daughter drop those off for me? I said what?! She said why didn’t she come see me? She just dropped them off with you? I took off my glasses and said mom it’s me! OMG she said I didn’t recognize you! Well open the blind honey I want to see you in the light! I’m only 5 weeks out but back into a size 14 jeans and lost 32 pounds. It really made my day. I’ve seen her once right out of surgery but didn’t feel well enough to stay long. I felt like I wasn’t loosing really so it meant a lot to me for her to not recognize me at first it made me realize I am progressing

I had a hard time until i was out of the liquid stage. It was so hard for me because i was in liquid a month before surgery so i missed thanksgiving and had my surgery 12/22/21 I had to stay too because i was also throwing up. I got out Christmas Eve but they didnt want to release me even then until i told the Dr my 2 teenagers where home alone and I didnt want to have them alone on Christmas. But now, 6 + weeks out I am actually really in great spirits and have been since about day 10. I think everyone here are correct that its normal.

Dont focus on the stalls. Being almost 7 weeks out I can tell you ill go 3-10 days no weight loss then bam 3-4 days of loss then stall again. My Dr and Nutritionist bot have me weigh and measure once a week. It helps to not weigh daily - advice I also got from many seasoned people here. Focus on eating what you should, drinking fluids, and exercise. It does come off. Mine is slow but ive lost 33 pounds so far and im a month to the day put monger than you.

Yes - Iron deficiency anemia is an unusual etiology of ischemic stroke. It is a cause of cerebrovascular accident due to low circulating levels of oxygen. I am glad they have made the surgery better. And it may be rare, the strokes, I honestly do not know how rare or common it is but it was enough to make my decision to get the sleeve. In fact - I only heard of the sleeve because my mail lady had it done and ive known her 20 years she looked amazing. That got me to research it about a year ago . I would never have had the bypass - again my personal choice do to my sister. Even if it the surgery has changed and improved over the years.

I had the sleeve in 2010 and didn't lose that much so asked my doctor about the surgery and I had the bypass in August 2021 I do the bypass again if I had my first choice over againsame as someone else said you can have the sleeve and if it doesn't work see if you can have the bypass but everyone is different read into them both and see what suits you

I like your way of thinking. My GERD disappeared with surgery. After I got covid (and I was vaccinated) I got gastritis in my stomach. The pain was unreal and nothing fixed it. Even with meds and the month of liquids preop when he took that part of my stomach off for the sleeve it was actually worse, the gastritis, with the pathology report. No known cause. Ive read covid can cause this. So im feeling a million times better since the sleeve no GERD im almost 7 weeks out. Best thing Ive done just to get rid of that horrible pain i had preop!

I did my own research before I went to the surgeon and was pretty sure I wanted a sleeve, but he did talk me through the pros and cons of bypass too. I do have reflux, but it always settled in the past when I lost weight, so I took a gamble on that happening this time too (and it has!) I liked the fact that I could lose a significant amount of weight whilst keeping my anatomy much the same. TBH I also kind of liked the safety net (that I never intend to use, but who does!) of a conversion to bypass if the sleeve didn't do what I was hoping it would.
Almost 3 months on I am really happy with my decision to go with the sleeve. But if my surgeon had recommended bypass I believe I am likely to have gone with that and probably been equally happy!!!

25 years ago a more distal bypass was more common after which severe anemia was sometimes an issue. I've known of at least a couple people that had anemia issues that required blood.
Much, much less common these days with the generally proximal bypasses done now.
Statistically such horrible complications are rare but we humans give more weight to them when they happen to someone we know. However, complications DO happen even if severe ones are rare. I've encountered people with just about every complication conceivable.
    Good luck,
    Tek

My bariatric surgeon says she's completely in charge of my stomach now, so when I needed an endoscopy to check for GERD, instead of going to a gastroenterologist, my bariatric surgeon did it.

I do exercise - I'm not a gym rat, but I always tried to exercise 5-6 days a week. At first it was mostly walking and Water aerobics, since I was too heavy to do much of anything else. I still do those - but I also now do Zumba and bicycling as well. I've also strength-trained off and on (twice a week) - but unfortunately not consistently because I don't really like it. But I recently started using resistance bands, which I like a lot more than the weight machines at my gym - so hopefully I'll keep up with it this time!
as for calories, by the end of the first year, I was up around 1000 per day. Second year I was eating around 1200 until I hit maintenance at 20 months out. I then experimented with different ranges to determine my "maintenance range", which is 1500-1700 per day. As long as I stay within that range, I can maintain my weight. But of course that's going to vary for everyone depending on how much muscle you have, how active you are, etc. I know some women who have to eat around 1200 to maintain, and others who can eat 2000....

I met with the psychologist for the first time on Friday. The very first thing he asked me was “what is your comfortable goal weight.” My current weight is 223, BMI of 38. A perfect BMI is 20 with a weight of 120 lbs (which was my weight before I had kids). I told him my comfortable goal weight is 140 lbs. He said that is too low and I should set my goal to a reasonable weight of 155 lbs. It kinda bugged me afterwards because he is a therapist, not a surgeon or dietitian. When I met with the surgeon on Monday, he didn’t mention a goal weight, but I figured HE would decide on my goal weight when I have the pre-surgery visit (no surgery date yet). Who decided on your goal weight?

Others can suggest goals but … it’s your body and ultimately your goals. My surgeon didn’t give me a target either. Just shared stats on average weight loss for my procedure.

I have two goals. One is how much weight I need to lose to be healthier and feel like I can move freely.

Another is a lower weight that I used to be a while ago. As I get closer I’ll find out how achievable that second goal was and adjust as needed.

I had my surgery the same day as you. I also had a extended hospital stay [5 days] because of swelling in my new tummy making me constantly vomit up every time I ate or drank. I had a miserable 2 weeks of this and felt like a fool for putting myself through this. My family were very worried for me and that made me feel more depressed. Then I got a urine infection turning my urine bloody which meant more meds to take
I rang my dietician and she said - look just take the liquid penicillin. Try and drink as much as possible. Eat broth and rest as much as you can. Taking the pressure off worked after 2 days. I have 6 tiny meals a day, 2 of yogurt, 2 of Soup and 2 of sieved cottage cheese. I am much better now and can sleep laying down. My mood has lifted and I am now taking all my meds and Vitamins. I will play it by ear as to progressing to the next level next Wednesday.
I hope you get the break you deserve too and see a little light down the line.

I felt blue for a while too! I read somewhere that any anaesthesia carries this risk and couple that with feeling tired, trying to recuperate after major surgery all the while you struggle to drink let alone eat? It’s a perfect cocktail for those feelings to arise. I felt MUCH better a week later, and would really encourage you to reach out to your loved ones so they can support you through this 💕
Be kind to yourself, be proud of yourself! You took a major step that took a lot of courage 💕

I have PCOS and slow metabolism but I wanted something that had better stats in the long run and RYN has that. Not to say sleeve doesn't since many have been successful on it as well.
But personally given my medical history and plethora of PCOS related side effects, I opted for bypass. Plus chances of revision is also high with sleeve because of reflux issue. And I didn't want take the route of having to have a second surgery if revision was needed. "ONE surgery and that should be the end of it" was my thought process. Hence even after being confused, I finally opted for bypass.
I know many prefer sleeve because of less chances of dumping and malnutrition, so it depends if those look tempting for you. Though there are 70% of by-passers who also don't dump, myself including. I always wanted a weight loss route that didn't restrict my diet (reason why I hated Keto and other carbs restrictive diets, my binge eating always worsened with them). Even then I took my chance with bypass thinking I shall see when I cross the bridge. And fortunately, I don't dump (at least with some of the sugary and fatty foods I have tried till now).
So give consideration to your medical history, your metabolism, stats and pros and cons of each and go with your gut feeling. That's what I did and so far I haven't regretted it *fingers crossed*

Honestly, they're both good surgeries, and you'll find people on here who have been extremely successful with both. If you have a medical condition that would make one or the other more appropriate for you, then listen to your surgeon. But if you don't, it really comes down to personal preference. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

surgical techniques have improved quite a but since 25 years ago, so I wouldn't have worried about blood transfusions. In fact, this is the first time I've ever read about someone needing those, and I've been hanging around this site for about seven years. Sorry she's going through this, though. I don't know if that was common back then, but it's definitely not now. But again, techniques are different now. Years ago some people used to get "candy cane syndrome", too, but you almost never hear about that anymore. They do the surgeries differently now.

It seems like you are trying to say that you are 70 and the local surgeon says you have to be 65 or younger. If that’s the case I would get a new surgeon. I hear of many people on here who are older than 65 getting the surgery and they are very successful. If you have medical issues that prevent you from surgery that’s one thing but using a magic number (age) to say you shouldn’t do surgery that just doesn’t make sense.

I went into a stall and really thought it wasn’t going to work for me. I totally understand how you feel. Mine started around day 10-11 and I saw my Nutritionist last week. She cleared me to start eating soft foods which I did the past 2 days and today I finally started loosing again! So have patience- which is easier said then done I know. I started at 227 and today I am 197.7. VSG 12/22/2021. Be patient with yourself, follow your program, see your Nutritionist if you can mine helped me not just food wise but mentally and emotionally to know I was on the right track. Also I am walking 3 miles a day so walk as much as you can it didn’t help me in the stall but it lifts my spirits and better than sitting on the couch! Also I can’t go outside due to weather so this is all in the house and not all at once
