Nougato got a reaction from Mcflytx in Fitness level before surgery
I had my sleeve done last year, Nov 2021. I used to work out religiously years ago, but since I'd gained so much weight, it went down to zero fitness level before surgery. Also, I've needed total knee replacements (on both knees) for a few years now. I'm 62 & hypothyroid, so I think that contributes to a slower loss? Anyhow, I only just started exercising as I can't walk far at all, even tho I've lost 90 lbs. I recently bought a CUBII so I can sit & peddle. It works wonderfully. I also use light hand weights & do exercises for seniors on YouTube.

The severe pain you’re describing sounds like it might be gall stones. Very common after sleeve surgery. I just had my gallbladder taken out and I’m six months post op. you may want to talk to your surgeon & have a blood test to check for elevated liver enzymes.

Nougato got a reaction from lala76 in VSG with no Thyroid
I had a total thyroidectomy in early 2K. Put on a TON of weight. After 3 years of research & going back & forth on deciding, I had my VSG in November 2021, just 5 months ago. I I was in the same boat as you - wondering if the surgery would actually make a difference. It was quite worrisome for me. But - it HAS made a difference! I've lost 55 lbs since the surgery, 96 lbs total adding in the pre-op diet & on my own (after my 1st consultation w/my surgeon I decided to get busy!). I'm probably a bit of a slow loser, compared to some others here. But I'm doing it. It is totally within reach for you, and you WILL lose weight!

I'm in maintenance and there are times when I'm going to eat snack food. So it's important to me to find less destructive alternatives. But that's a personal call we all have to make.

Nougato reacted to JDLane in 5 Months out. Just had a whole candy bar.
Like others have said, just don't make a habit out of it. Part of the reason I had this surgery is because I don't want to continue the lifetime of diets and guilt with eating. I want to lose the weight and just have a healthy relationship with food, that includes the occasional candy bar. Beating yourself up or being overly restrictive may lead to more binges. Just accept it happened and move on. If you find yourself desperate for candy try to find an alternative option or go for a mini size. But this first year is your fast lane for weight loss and you should try to maximize that as much as possible.
I was on Protonix for 2 months post op and still have it for as needed. I was never prescribed the other med you mentioned.

Nougato reacted to SummerTimeGirl in ProCare Health One A Day Vitamin
So I've been taking the ProCare Health One A Day Vitamin with 45 mg of Iron for probably about a month now. In the beginning I had no issues with them (whether I had food in my stomach or not) but for the last week or two I feel nauseous for like 15 min or more after taking them. To be fair I don't always have something in my stomach when taking them so that's understandable, but many times I at least have some fruit or an egg before taking it in the am.
Just wondering if anyone else has issues too? What do you eat before taking it? I wonder if I should just switch to taking it after dinner instead. After I've eaten something of more substance? Not sure why it was fine initially and now I'm having issues.

I never got the pouch thing. Isn’t it still your tummy just smaller?
Kangaroos have pouches to raise & carry their young. A pouch is like a pocket, a sporran or a backpack to store extra things.
    Let’s ban the word pouch.
BTW - Moist never bothered me. I use ‘journey’ a lot here - sorry.

    I hate the word "pouch."
There, I've said it. I feel better now.
Yes, I know doctors use the word.
    No, I don't have a better word.
    I just don't like it.🤣

Do you have physical limitations that prevent you from exercise? If not, why aren't you exercising? Have you tried curtailing the calories back from almost 1100? I am almost 7 months out and I eat usually less than that.
IMO, Weight Watchers is at best, a terrible diet for obese people, and at worst, a diet designed specifically to keep people "on the plan" and not to lose the weight they need to. Why? They are a for-profit company - that's why! I personally would only reserve it for maintenance but wouldn't follow the daily carb allowance. It allows you too many carbs, truly. The effective tool for rapid weight loss is ketosis, and you'll never achieve that on WW. Expect a loss in the wallet, but not much on the scale. If it worked so well for all of us then why did we end up getting surgery? If I were you I wouldn't give up on your nutritionist's plan yet. Go back to your surgery center and explain your issues.

Nougato reacted to Arabesque in Confused about throwing up (sorry tmi)
I’m a sleever & I’ve found vomiting is different too. I wonder if it’s because we have fewer stomach muscles as well cause, on the handful of occasions I have vomited, it doesn’t feel like all my muscles are heaving. A win is I don’t have sore muscles after like I used to either. Plus I only need to throw up a small volume of food to empty my tummy.
I hate the foamies! I get them if my food is too dry, too coarse or fibrous. Begins with my restriction being more severe, followed by hacking & then spitting up small amounts of that foamy, gunky saliva. Can occur up to an hour after I’ve eaten.
My dad was told the same thing about the flattened cola with his chemo. It’s also useful for getting rid of the bad taste & reducing the coated tongue after chronic vomiting with chemo. Best of luck with your continued recovery, @Jacks133.
PS - Personally, I’ve never understood the whole ‘pouch’ description thing. Our tummies are exactly the same organ as they were before the surgery. They function in the same way as they did before (maybe a bit fussier). They are only smaller & for bypass have had a little shortcut rerouting to the intestines. They’re still stomachs.

Have you started your Iron supplement yet? I was completely lethargic because my iron levels were shot post-op. As soon as I started the iron supplement, I felt a million times better—within 2-3 days, even. The protein is vital—if you can't get the protein in, you will feel weak no matter what your iron level is, though.

The weird churning pain happened to me and felt like hunger too—but it turned out to be mild GERD. I took some over-the-counter omeprazole (Prilosec) and it stopped in a couple of hours. I still take this sometimes if I have a mild GERD attack.

    Post op day 5
after sleeping most of the day yesterday I woke up early with my 5.5 year old and let my husband sleep in. I ready to get up anyways because I guess of maybe reflux. I’ve never had it before but something in my sternum area was bothering me.

my belly button incision is still pretty sore while getting up, bending over, and to the touch. It doesn’t, and never did require anything more than Tylenol (which thankfully I have the dissolvable).
I had little meltdown involving some tears over trying to stomach yet again another Protein Shake I hate. Everyone’s beloved fairlife can go straight to hell. So I haven’t even reached 10g of Protein yet people, imma die. Also I need to find another multi Vitamin.

so I pick myself up and brush my tank teeth (all this fake sweet stuff in protein waters/shakes/vitamins/chewable gas x/dissolvable Tylenol/sugar jello/sugar free popsicles is giving the worse taste in my mouth).

i did manage with no problem 32 oz of Water, 1/2 ounce at time using a med cup, spaced 3 min apart sometimes longer if was doing something. My goal tomorrow is to increase that by another 16 oz, we’ll see.
Ok so after feeling like I was being a major baby about the cussing Protein Shakes I decided to white knuckle it and do 1/2 oz shots with 5 min in between. I had a cup of water for rinsing my mouth out and an empty cup to spit the rinse into between shots. And I managed 2 oz. and the after taste was STILL after the rinse.
I had a sugar free popsicle for the first time, and even though I am totally over artificial sweeteners, it felt nice to bite into something.
hungry and desperate for something that was palatable, I sent my husband to Panera to get 4 cups of different Soups. I chose to strain the broccoli and cheese Soup and water it down to slide off of spoon. I ate 1/4 cup by toddler spoonfuls every 3 min. I had to reheat 3 times for 19 sec. I wanted to eat the entire cup, but atlas I did not. I was satisfied and then passed out for a nap.
I will be having that for dinner as well. Healthy? Not really, but I need some motherfarten calories, ANYTHING that doesn’t make me gag.
    today was better than yesterday.
I took a lovely shower and did my hair.
    the end.

Your weight is basically meaningless for the first few weeks. You just went through a major surgery and your body is catching up with the changes! It is virtually impossible to gain actual body weight right after surgery (weight fluctuations of a few pounds are very normal and usually just related to Water retention), so right now, you need to focus on healing and getting enough water and Protein. You might even want to stay off the scale for a while so you don't stress out about it needlessly. A lot of people just weigh in once per week so they don't see those fluctuations. You're doing great -- just stick with your program and you'll keep losing.

Nougato reacted to Officially Not Fatty Matty in Does anyone know why we shouldn't have coffee?
I drink coffee without issue, have since day two if you count the cafe mocha Protein Drinks, probably day three of real coffee. There are some doctors (in all specialties) who give the absolute safest/healthiest/trendiest advice just because that’s what they do. The reality is caffeine isn’t needed by the body. Any research or study that even remotely indicates a negative association will cause some doctors to put (insert food/drink item here) on their prohibition list just because… it’s like a mechanic who says “get your oil changed every 5000 miles without exception” because technically it is the best/safest advice vs the mechanic who says “it’s honestly fine if you go over a little, just don’t go crazy and get it taken care of soon.” The first is covering his butt so the one in a million customer that has their engine blow up at 5001 miles past the last oil change doesn’t blow a gasket (hah!) and blame them even though it’s not likely connected vs the second who understands the realities of the situation and gives practical honest advise that is more compliant with the busy lives of the vast majority of people.
Many doctors are VERY risk averse due to malpractice lawsuits, some are just exceptionally health conscious on behalf of their patients to the point of being unrealistic, some even misunderstand physics and how the body works (straw prohibition!! Grrrrrr!!).
The real real answer? You’ll almost certainly be absolutely fine drinking coffee. There is a chance you won’t. There is a chance caffeine will cause you health concerns down the road. There is a chance it won’t. Your body doesn’t need it, but you may want it and that’s ok.
Me? Sipping my coffee as I type this long ramble of a mess of a post.

NO REGRETS! It’s an emotional rollercoaster, for sure, but three months out and down 53 pounds, LIFE IS GREAT! You will be afraid, you will mourn food (restricted foods are only temporary), and you will be frustrated. Then that scale starts moving, you start feeling amazing, your health starts to improve, and you realize why you made this decision. It’s not really about other people though. Are your reasons worth the hard work? Only you can answer. Your old self will have to die. That person and those eating habits will not exist anymore. But you know who will exist…the person you’ve been dreaming of. Your goals. The best version of yourself. I am in love with life because of my VSG. Best of luck!

Are you exercising at all? This sounds like it may be something else going on that’s possibly hormonal (ie high cortisol, pcos, insulin resistance, hypothyroidism etc)

I agree to disagree on people who are not “big eaters” having the surgery. I wasn’t a big eater and spent many years with a high level of exercise and closely monitoring my diet and still ended up 340 pounds before surgery. Without getting VSG, I don’t even want to think about where my weight would be now as it would be so outrageous.

Don’t be afraid to go to multiple doctors and asking for different tests/opinions. It took me years and years to somewhat find out what was wrong with me to somewhat understand why I kept gaining weight. I cried, I had complete breakdowns in front of my husband because of the sheer frustration of it all. VSG is a wonderful tool, but if you have something going on that is causing your metabolism to lower significantly, it’s only part of the puzzle.
