SleeverSk reacted to fourmonthspreop in Negative comments from family members
I just need to vent because im so upset about this sometimes. Does anyone deal with negative comments from family members about your surgery? It's not so much about the fact that I got surgery but moreso constant questioning of my success. Like they're always like "what's gonna stop you from just gaining it all back?" "You might just go back to your old habits." "How are things gonna be any different this time?" "You got to the point of needing weight loss surgery to lose weight so how can you be successful?" That's actually what my brother just said to me and it made me so sad and upset. I've been working so hard to do it right this time but they just discredit me like it's another half baked idea. I wish they'd just tell me I got this and not question my dedication. I put in so much work to get where I am both mentally and physically. I made a comment about making sugar free brownie dip for my birthday and my family member said "isn't that what got you to this point in the first place, wanting to eat things like that?" And it just broke me like I'm not allowed to still Celebrate things with food. The all or nothing mindset is what drove my binge eating for years. All I want is to have a healthy relationship with all food and I'm finally in a place where I feel like I can, and then these comments are made. They make me feel like a failure or that I'm thinking incorrectly. I know deep down how far I've come but some days it really gets to me and tears me down. I'm sorry at this point I'm just venting. I just wish they'd recognize my successes and not constantly question my ability. Ughhhh

i've been using my ipad and i'm not given the option to update this info for myself. i'll try it on my desktop computer though.
Nope, can't access it from my desktop either. My husband said i might have to post a certain number of things here before i'm allowed to add items to my profile.
So, be patient with all us newbies. We are all a work in progress

    FOUND IT!
It is difficult to find where to to fill out the side bar info. When i filled in my profile information, the side bar info was there but i wasn't able to click into any of it. I finally found it somewhere else.

I didn’t experience bald spots but had LOTS of thinning. It was noticeable and family pointed it out 😢 too because my hair had been so thick before surgery. I can tell as well and am pretty self-conscious about it…

I am 6 weeks post surgery and have struggled as well. Eating period has been difficult for me and I figured it was a result of my hiatal hernia repair. I am not able to eat much at all and have had a hard time with transitioning through the stages. I have not been able to successfully handle anything aside from yogurt, Jello, Soup, pudding or applesauce. People have suggested maybe it is dairy, maybe I am eating foods with too much acidity, eating too fast, etc. But Caloric intake was never discussed. I believe as long as you are getting your Protein and liquid intake, you should be fine.

    Hi ,
I am 7 weeks post surgery . The surgeon found I had a hiatus hernia which he fixed along with tightening the muscle . One day after surgery I got oesophageal spasms which was extremely painful so they knocked me out by a drip for 4 days until they got it under control. My sleeve seems to be successful but am often still have feelings of faintness , and tiredness.
also am wondering if someone can share what and how much they eat during the day . I think I am only getting 400 to 500 calories . I am also suffering from head hunger at night and am nibbling at cashews to try and satisfy it .
The weight loss has been good and to have loss this much weight without the sleeve would have been torture and been less than half the weight loss . I don’t regret doing this but sometimes feel it is quite hard .

My cholesterol went up too & I was also told it was because of the weight loss. They still kept their eye in it. It was back within my usual range of about 5 (had been that for decades regardless of diet or weight) once my weight stabilised. Now it’s low 4s.
The back pain & other body aches are also related to your weight loss. Your body is getting used to holding itself differently. Before it was compensating for the weight you were carrying. Now it’s relearning how to stand up straight again. A friend go also had surgery & I often joke about how we still slouch a bit. We don’t have a large tummy to prop us up anymore. 😆 I also had back pain until I bought myself some new bras that fit my smaller breasts - made a big difference.

Yes my surgeon said it is because sometimes when the body "releases" fat the liver gets a bit overloaded and cholesterol goes up but it should be temporary but can take 12 months or so to start coming down

Well I met with my surgeon yesterday and I'm scheduled for surgery on April 26th. I'm extremely happy and nervous all at the same time. I already see a change in my attitude (I'm happier) just knowing I'm going to have a better and healthier future. But I do still question if im doing the right thing. Im not Severely overweight. Im 5'6" and weighed 218 yesterday. But Im have other health concerns and I'm trying to address this quickly instead of waiting. But With the what if's. What if Im the one out of so many with the complications. Like bad heartburn, I do some acid reflux now but I don't have to be on a daily medicine. The complications are scary but not living happy is scary too. I'm not trying to bring myself down. Did anyone have this scared feeling if your doing the right thing and come out of it with or without regrets

Yeah, I guess that’s what is bothering me. It doesn’t feel very good to keep pushing back the goal posts on how much I have to lose to make any difference.

Thanks it helps to hear that it did resolve for some people after a while and otherwise hey even normal weight people have these problems too.

I had really believed the “losing weight will fix everything” and with no improvement after 93 lbs lost, was feeling real bad about myself.

Every single one of my doctors encouraged me to get bariatric surgery because they said that it would cure all my comorbidities. I have type 2 diabetes, idiopathic intercranial hypertension, Migraine, GERD, and hypertension all of which they said would go away. I think I should have realized that was super optimistic. These are the same doctors that said if I lost 10% of my body weight, all of these would get better and they didn't.
Well I've had the surgery. I've lost 93lbs so far and ... I still have every single one of those problems. I feel a bit mislead or maybe just broken. I have other medical problems besides those, they were just the ones they blamed on my weight. I like losing weight but had gotten my hopes up about being less impacted by these other diseases and it didn't pan out.
Did it work out for anyone else and they actually had other medical problems resolve after surgery?

I am on the pre-op diet too, day 4. I have not been hungry at all between "meals/shakes". I even reached out to my team to find out if I had to eat/drink everything on the diet. She said as much as possible so I get the proper nutrients. I haven't eaten all my "meals" since I started and today I am literally forcing myself to eat which makes me feel sick. Like @SleeverSk mentioned, I am not knocking it because I have heard of people really struggling through this and cheating. I appreciate that it has been easy so far and hope it continues until surgery on the 21st and for a while after.

Its a good thing don't knock it !! there could be many reasons for it 1 that comes to mind is that you are meeting the nutrients your body needs. Maybe you are more hydrated now, what ever the reason its a good thing it will make your pre op diet much easier thats for sure
